Twin "Idol" Wannabes Booted By Sarah Hall
Mon Jan 30, 7:02 PM ET

Fox has dashed Terrell and Derrell Brittenum's dreams of becoming the next American Idols.

The 28-year-old identical twin brothers were "uninvited" from the competition after their criminal records became public fodder, their lawyer said.

"It was an amicable breakup," attorney Maurice Bennett said on an Atlanta radio station. "The guys understood why. It's amazing how these things work."

The Brittenums made their mark on American Idol during the first episode of the fifth season, when they wowed the judges at the Chicago auditions and earned passes to Hollywood.

But the Tennessee natives' brush with glory turned out to be short-lived, as the brothers soon landed behind bars on charges that they used another man's identity and financial information last June to purchase a 2005 Dodge Magnum in Atlanta. Both Brittenums refused extradition to Georgia, which led to additional charges against them.

Fox has remained mum on whether the brothers would be seen in future episodes of the talent search. However, the New York Post reports that the network put the kibosh on a planned live performance by the Brittenums Wednesday night on MSNBC's Scarborough Country, indicating that they are probably still under contract.

According to Bennett, both brothers were released from jail on bond Sunday morning and were preparing to travel to Los Angeles for the next round of eliminations when they received word that their presence was no longer welcome.

Though the twins may have blown their shot at Idol worship, they reportedly have other opportunities to consider. Bennett claims to have been contacted by "several" record labels interested in signing the brothers.

Meanwhile, as the audition segments continued this week, tensions between the judges ran high, culminating in a temper tantrum thrown by none other than Simon Cowell.

After arguing back and forth with his fellow judges, Randy Jackson and Paula Abdul, the snarky critic stormed out of the San Francisco auditions, leaving the other two to hear the final few contestants on their own.

"He was being obnoxious to the girl who was singing," Abdul told Entertainment Tonight. "He had just had it. Not only did he leave, but he left and took the plane home!"

Cowell admitted that he lost his patience with Abdul and Jackson.

"We had a major row. I got to the point where I said 'I can't sit next to you anymore,' and left," he told Entertainment Tonight. "But to be fair, Randy Jackson was being obnoxious that day as well. Occasionally, they turn into American music critics. I got to the point I couldn't sit with them anymore. There's a point in the day where you just think, 'There's no point in me sitting next to you anymore. Do it yourself.' So that's what I did."

More than 32 million viewers watched Cowell blow his stack on Wednesday, just slightly fewer than the 34.8 million viewers who tuned in for Tuesday's episode. Last week's fifth season premiere set a new record for the talent search, drawing an audience of 35.5 million.

His parents live in our subdivision and he went to the local highschool. So, our paper is keeping us abreast of his progress. Apparently, Paula has already slipped on how far he makes it. This is the first time we have had a Boulder guy make it this far, so I guess I will have to start voting for the local kid. :teeth: Good thing that he can actually sing :goodvibes

:faint: OMG...I'm a married woman...but I have to say he's HOT :firefight

Hooray for Hollywood!!! I still haven't watched Boston yet (I taped it) but I really have no desire. I get so bored with the awful people. I always enjoy the group sing days though - there's always something going on!!! One person who i really like is Katie McPhee (the girl whose mom is a vocal coach) - I think she's wonderful.

Seriously I was tearing up when the little cowboy kid who'd never left his farm, or been on a plane saw the ocean for the first time and went running into it. Then when he got onto the stage and gulped "holy crap!". I felt SO bad for him. You could hear him just CHEWING on his song...butchering it with his nerves. Thank goodness they are giving him another shot. Hee is adorable. Probably not going to win, but he'll keep people tuning in and the ratings up.

Of all the stupid ideas! I had forgotten about that site. I took a quick peek...they are really full of themselves to think they had that much influence! :lmao:

First of all, Undertaker guy is Jason Horn (as I already stated), we were not shown him last night.

About VFTW, the thing is to take everything said on the site not as seriously. A lot of it is Tongue in Cheek. I'm telling you though, possible candidates for this year include Taylor Hicks and David Radford.

I still don't understand the whole VFTW concept. I took this directly from their website:

Why do they do this? It's simple: American Idol is not about singing at all. Carrie Underwood was a lifeless, boring farmbot, and she still won (with our help, of course). Carrie also helped prove that VFTW does indeed make a difference when she won by only 134 votes. When votes are that close, it shows that VFTW can make a difference each and every week!

That makes no sense at all. How did voting for the worst help Carrie to win exactly? They take credit for that??? Shouldn't the opposite have been true?? Also, she won by a majority of 52% to 48% that's a heck of a lot more than 134 votes. The votes they are talking about was a freaking web poll!!!

Why Taylor Hicks? I think he's already going to be a fan favorite. :thumbsup2

The whole "we're sticking it to the man" concept of VFTW is nonsense. AI fans have consistently demonstrated they are more than capable and willing of voting against the heavily promoted contestants.

You're right, it was from a web poll. I never understood that whole section about Carrie Underwood, but whatever.

For me, VFTW is a way to possibly keep the show more interesting. Am I saying that VFTW is all-powerful and whatever it wants it'll happen? Not at all, half the time we're scrambling to pick someone to vote for. Every year though we get lucky with one contestant (John Stevens in AI3 and Scott Savol in AI4) who outstays their welcome. Of course VFTW can't work by itself so it helps when a singer has a preexisting fanbase. And remember, its not always about the absolute worst. Its a combination of mediocre singing ability, lack of marketability, and the entertainment factor (does the singer make weird gestures when singing, will the singer talk back to judges?)

I have seen a lot of people last year who were totally outspoken against VFTW. Thats fine, we're all welcome to vote the way we want to vote (even those who will vote for Ace just "because he is hot.")

A 29 year old who looks 40+ isn't the most marketable, plus he's rather funny to watch sing.

And about the second comment..... were Bo and carrie really the best last eyar had to offer? (Some people will say yes, and thats fine, but imo, they weren't the best) but they were easily the two most promoted contestants.

Bo wasn't even on AI's radar until the final group. It was all Constantine all the time.

Yeah Carrie was the worst.... that is why her album sold double platinum. I don't get the whole vote for the worst thing. :confused3

Well Jason may not have been shown last night but the folks over on the AI site are all talking about him. As for Taylor being a VFTW candidate, you are kidding I hope. What a refreshing change from the cookie cutter Barbie Dolls that have won this competition in the past. While I would agree that his stage presence needs some work, his voice is amazing.

I agree about Taylor being a refreshing change !! I really like him and hope he does well ! :thumbsup2
