American Idol, Season 5 **Official Discussion Thread**

I have to say that I am really surprised Kevin did not go home tonight. He just doesn't have the voice like the other ones do. Oh, and the moves....Lol. He needs to cool it with the hip thrusts. :rotfl:

On the other hand, Taylor is awesome. I can totally see him winning this thing. He has not had one bad performance yet. I also love Katharine McPhee. I think they will be the last two standing. There. I've said it. :teeth:

I'm sorry and there's no disrespect intended but I had to laugh at your Elvis and Marilyn Monroe comparison. I think we're actually to the day in age where the MAJORITY of parents with 9-11 year old girls would actually have had crushes on people more in the 70s or 80s like Leif Garrett, Andy Gibb, Rick Springfield, Farrah Fawcett, Matt Dillon, Ralph Machio, Tom Cruise, Debbie Gibson, Jon Bon Jovi time periods more. I'm 26 years old and even MY parents were after the time period of crushes on Marilyn Monroe or Elvis really. I'm not making fun, but isn't it funny how time marches on.... :rolleyes1

You are right but I was just trying to make a point....actually I am only 32 and I only know a few of the ones you listed...LOL....I would have said for me...Alyssa Milano, Madonna, maybe Debbie Gibson....anyway.....just trying to make a point about its young kids that are driving Kevin....they need to say must be 18 or older to vote but then it wouldnt be a true vote cause it will be the young ones driving sales if Kevin wins...god I hope he doesnt...

Glad to see Melissa go....she lasted a week too long....was happy to see ACe in the bottom as he is not a great singer....only needed to swap lisa with Kevin and it would have been right....Kevin next then Ace then elliott....Also Chris needs to mix it up a little and show a different side...that being said he is 10 times the rocker and singer Bo and Constatine were...I am pulling for him, Taylor, or Mandissa I think...I will be hapyy with any of them 3 winning....I also really like Lisa hope she starts bringing it now...

How in the heck is it that Kevin is still there? :confused3

I would love to see the contract he made with the devil for that.

Just finished watching the episode and can't say I was shocked one bit. While I do believe like Slacking (I think) said Ace's fanbase will rally around him next week, I really don't think Lisa has a fanbase. I think that no matter what she sings, she still could be going home next week. She was actually pretty good Tuesday night and she still was in the Bottom Three.

Personally, I was thrilled Kevin wasn't in the Bottom Three. For the first time, I actually liked him last night (I genuinely liked him, too, not in a Vote for the Worst kind of way)...granted, I didn't vote for him and never will, but he does provide some enjoyment.

Anyway, all my votes went to Katharine. I don't get the bad vibes about her and her delivery. I see her as a jazz singer and jazz isn't known for its even rhythms. Personally, her and Taylor are my favorites, but I'll probably only be seeing one of the them in the finals...

No surprise with Melissa. :rolleyes1 But I do think Ace will be out of the bottom next week, cuz' his fans will wake up.

Did they announce next weeks theme? If they did I missed it. :confused3

Did they announce next weeks theme? If they did I missed it.

I was hoping for a country theme, but then I heard Barry Manilow is going to either be performing or guest judging next week, so naturally I figured the theme had to be Manilow songs, but now I just read on another AI board that next week is 50's music and Barry just came out with a new CD of 50's songs so it's all making sense now! :rotfl:

I hope they are right, I would LOVE to see Bucky do an Elvis song.

Well I am glad she went home but what the heck is up with Chicken Little not being in the bottom three?

My take on last night:

Lisa: Not shocked. For whatever reason, this girl seems to have a very small fan base (going by the number of Lisa threads on the IdolOnFox website). I personally think she has a wonderful voice but just doesn't connect with the audience.

Melissa: Another non-connector there. Forgetting the words? Well I think that was part of her downfall but Kellie forgot some words too and she's still there.

Neither Lisa nor Melissa will or would have figured into the top 3 anyway so it was just a matter of time.

Ace: Was I shocked? Maybe just a little. However for the past 3 weeks he has not brought his A game and, to credit the American public, they have seen this. I don't think any of the contestants have been at 100% every week but he's only batting at 25%. Not good.

Kevin: You know, I never noticed that he had a lisp and even if he does, who cares? For me, Kevin started out great and has gotten a bit worse each week. Seeing how AI should be about a total package, yeah, I do find his eye movements and facial contortions a bit annoying but I could even get over that when his voice was decent. Last week it wasn't and the week before that wasn't all that great either.

He HAS done something that Lisa and Melissa failed to do though. He's made the audience like him and that gets the votes coming in.

And Taylor, not hot??!! I guess hot is in the eyes of the beholder. :teeth:

Ace-He was terrible all over the place-Runs were spoken

Pickler-Absolutely horrendous-I dont believe her backwoods routine is a routine anymore-If she was playing a bumpkin those bumpkin answers just come to easy to be fake

Elliot-Good couldve been better-with his voice I kind of expected more

Mandisa-Rough to start but with that song unless your Stevie its hard not to be-her control and range were great when she hit the uptempo

Bucky-surprised at how well he did-kinda thought it was gonna be bad but it was ok

Melissa-OUCH-yeah she lost the words but I believe it was because of how she changed the song kinda felt like in the beginning she was trying to sing it the original way versus her way and it threw her off--she did clean up nice though

Lisa-way better than she has been as far as presence goes-I thought she was going to have the same probs as Ayla but she worked it out nicely-Still not 100% sold on her though just something there I cant explain

Kevin--I read a couple of posts that bashed him for last nights but all I can say is WOW-I think if I was blindfolded and made to listen to the last couple of weeks of songs then last nights I would not believe they were the same person--Maybe being a sex symbol now is boosting his confidence! his runs were perfect his timing dead on and that with that song is a feat onto itself

Katherine-By far the best female vocals of the night-lets hope she can keep it up

Taylor-I love him but it just didnt feel right last night-Maybe it was the song because I just didnt get the whole TH vibe from him with that song Still good nonetheless

Paris-What the heck was that thing with her leg?-I kept seeing my uncle at the family bbq playing Spoons on his knee-talented yes but I just don't think she has the AI factor-keep picturing her doing backup for Ella Fitzgerald

Chris-Phenomenal stage presence-I wouldn't have believed it to be a Stevie song if I didn't already know-The rock is his meal ticket and he knows it-I think if he were to do a ballad it would be from one of the hair bands maybe "Is this love"by Whitesnake

Worst-Kellie by a mile
Best-Katherine

I am thinking the same thing! How many 14 year olds and grannies are voting for him? Oh well, his time will come. Chris Rocks!

It's obvious that we all have different musical tastes. There is no way everyone is going to agree. I can't stand to hear Kevin sing, but can't tell anyone else they are wrong for thinking he can. I realize that maybe he is playing up the sex symbol thing in jest, but it just makes me cringe. I did comment that this show will get him, uhm.....some action to put it nicely. Where he may not have gotten it before. In any other realm, I too would be for the underdog. Not on AI. I'm vicious when it comes to my show. I adore Taylor and Chris and would be soooooooo livid if they got pushed out by the underdog votes.

Others have commented on Mandisa's size. It doesn't bother me at all. I used to be a big ole gal, so I guess that's why. I think she is absolutely beautiful inside and out and can sing her heart out. I was right there with her when she
needed to take those heels off. I even admired her for shaking her tush. I wish I could have been so confident when I was her size.

According to the American Idol website, the theme for next week is "song of the 50's.
:sunny:

I KNEW Lisa would be in the bottom three. The poor kid had a great audition but since then I haven't seen the great voice or the personality. I thought for sure when I first heard her, she would be the next idol. Not anymore. Too much competition. And really and truely I don't get Paris. Not a fan of her voice at all. She is cute but annoying to me. This competition is a lot more based on popularity than singing IMO

LOL - I was just thinking the exact same thing.

I don't care for Kevin's voice, but I would never mock him or tell someone they are crazy for thinking he's good. Whatever.............we just don't vote for him at our house.

I enjoy looking at Ace, but don't think he's great.

I think Taylor is an awesome singer, but certainly don't find him hot - although he is growing on me.

I would never look at Chris twice on the street, but vote for him over & over.

I really like Lisa & was surprised she was in the bottom 3. One of my DD's was REALLY surprised.

I liked Paris at the beginning, but don't think she's as good as some of the others.

I think Mandisa is oustanding & beautiful. What is it about size - who cares. It's a singing competition - this is not the show The Biggest Loser.

Kelly & Bucky - take or leave

Elliott - not fond of.

Katherine - I like her, but don't think she'll win

Melissa - not surprised she went home

Funny how different people have different opinions.

I think a 50's theme will be great!! Wonder what everyone will sing?

I truly think that so much has to do with the connection to the audience as well as their story being played up. Although I didn't care for Gideon, he could sing - better than some who are still there.

And I hate when the judges contradict their advice to the contestents....they want them to break out of their molds and then when they do they say you should stick with what you know best.

This week shoud prove interesting...I wonder what Barry will sing if he performs.

I was not surprised by Melissa leaving last night. She was not surprised either. What is not right is Kevin still in the top. Good singers are going to be sacrificed for him. I was glad that Bucky was not in the bottom three. I know he will not win but I hope he stays for awhile. I hope Kevin goes before him. Paris could go next week and that would be okay with me. She has a good voice but bad attitude. Alot of people I talk with agree with that also. I guess we will see what happens.

Since some of the singers left aren't all that good, Kevin really isn't hurting anyone YET...but after Lisa, Kellie, Bucky, Paris and Ace are gone IF Kevin is still around it might impact the really good ones.

I like Lisa and Ace...Lisa needs to start to connect to the audience, she has a good voice, but there is no spark with her.

Ace also has a good voice...but he has made really, really bad song choices.
