American Idol 2023

I thought it would come down to Nailyah and Paige Anne. Then I watched Nutsa and even though I don’t care for her personality, she IS a performer and she CAN sing, so I added her as a pick too. I was shocked to see Lionel pick Lucy Love. Didn’t see that coming at all.

I know Lucy has had a tough run, but she just comes across as so angry that it is a distraction from whether she has talent or not.

Nutsa is just...Nutsa. I don't care for her at all even though luvnwdwgal is right.

The Judges Picks HAD to be "Backstory Picks" and not "Talent Picks".

Again, (for the last time) I say the choices had to do with the show picking to represent certain demographics they want to keep watching.

In the second case, it occurred to me when I was watching Nutsa's backstory, saying she was in a lot of competitions growing up, that later, even if she doesn't win, she gets to go back to her home country, and forever, when performing, she can ADVERTISE that she was an AI Top 5-12 finalist. That's FREE advertising for AI in that other country. What show would pass that up? It's a win for both AI and the other country.

And did anyone else think her hair on Sunday looked very much like how JLo does her hair?

For the judges first pick, Lucy Love rounds out a group that is otherwise very straight-laced, squeaky clean and except for two other finalists, basically WHITE. Lucy is tough, likes to be cool, and have a street smart personae and sings a particular R&B, or soul style. BEFORE Lucy was picked, people in that demographic were saying, "There's no one here that represents me. I'm not watching this anymore."

To be clear: I am NOT saying Lucy isn't talented and has a good voice. Just to me, the demographic representation and rounding out of the Finalists is there - coincidental or not.

I can't say I feel Nutsa was picked for her voice. I thought she sucked at the Dreamgirls song. All being loud, no real connection to the emotion of what the song is about, and she has a tendency to have her voice drop out when singing softly. But she represents a certain demographic too, that is beneficial to AI and her culture.

Nutsa is far more tolerable when she just stands and sings without all the extra dramatics. She has a great power ballad voice.

I don't think Michael Williams look change did him any favors. While I always thought his voice was quite generic, even though the judges gave him a platinum card, he has a particular teeny bopper rock star look when he auditioned, that I think the judges thought may make him a success.

But, when he showed up this week looking a LOT older and totally different style, I think that turned off a lot of previous fans.

She is definitely a "performer" I'm sure she wants as much exposure as she can get...I get almost a pageant vibe from her

She did say she did a lot of competitions growing up the way pageant contestants do.

My first thought from him was "boy band"....I think that he would be a good fit for something like that vs a solo artist

Yes! He went from George Michael in Wham to George Michael in later years, looks-wise, within a week. But, he doesn't have George Michael's voice to really pull off a solo artist career. :thumbsup2 And how is the audience supposed to trust him? We don't know if a different look will show up next week?

Is it me or does Nutza seem way older than 25? It looks to me like she has had work done.

I was not a fan of the results last night. Most that I voted for went home.

Nutsa? While she has a great voice she is too "practiced" for me. She doesn't come across as marketable for a main stream music career but I can see cruise ship, Vegas or off Broadway for her.

I don't think the judges should have picked since it was all "vote for your top 12", well we didn't get to vote for our top 12 because we have no clue who the next 2 people were with the votes that could have gone through. Makes me think they wanted 2 particular people in there and changed it. If they would have said we vote for the top 10 and then there will be 2 judges picks I wouldn't be so ticked.

I really am not a fan of that one young girl that writes her own songs. I feel like they want another Taylor Swift. I also don't like Megan Danielle. She was OK this week but last week her notes were all over the place and they fawned over her.

Oh well. My favorites are gone but I'll keep watching to see what happens.

I am a little confused. Michael wasn't a platinum ticket winner? As far as I know, there were only 4-Cam, Tyson, Elijah, and Kaylin. I loved Michael from the first time I saw him. I don't think the change he made to his appearance really changed my mind about him. I was hoping he would be a judges pick, but we know that isn't the case now. :(

Nutza is growing on me lol. I think her last two performances were great.

We were extremely sad and disappointed that Olivia went home. We had her in our top 5.

:lmao: I mis-read your post at first. I thought you said Broadway instead of Off-Broadway. I was like, "HUH?!?" o_O

I agree with Off-Broadway or a cruise ship. Nutsa is LOUD and can hit those notes. She can be big theatrically in her expressions and physicality. But, in my opinion, in no way does she seem to have the emotional depth required for Broadway. Even when she was on stage in the purple dress, being still for once, she tried to act humble and grateful, but it was, as you said, very "practiced." Good word. :thumbsup2

Whoops! I thought I saw him sitting up in the balcony with the platinum ticket winners.

I agree, she's very much like a Taylor Swift. Considering how much the whole debacle of Ticketmaster screwing up Taylor Swift concert tickets has really become a huge mess, with some Swiftie fans even forming a lawsuit, I think it would be an AI dream to discover another Taylor Swift with a new group of "Swifties."

That's what we said. Her career seems to be starting out just like Taylors did. She seems to be a good songwriter and could make a living doing just that.
