American Idol 2023

All of those finale shows are too long with lots of needless filler. Watched a bit but obviously the last 15 minutes or so is when they announce the winner and wasn't that impressed with either the show or any of the finalists. Thought the finalists for The Voice were much better singers although their show also rambled along for 2 hours with a 1 hour intro that recapped the prior nights songs.

With any of these reality singing shows, the winner is a function of who tends to watch/vote and even if you win there is no guarantee you will be a success in the music business. While there have been a few winners who have become big names in the music industry, most had limited success and careers that went nowhere.

This is being reported today in various news outlets: "Just Sam" (Samantha) Idol winner from 2020, during the pandemic, started off singing on the subways in NYC for money, and even though she won, she is back to singing in the subways for money once again.

TMZ LIVE reported today that Just Sam had been offered a recording contract, as per some of the conditions to winning Idol, AND SHE TURNED IT DOWN back then. AI and the record company put out a lot of money for the show and the recording contract, and create a rigorous schedule of appearances, concerts & then recording an album to recoup their money back. TMZ says that Just Sam didn't or couldn't do all that, as one of the reasons why she turned down the contract. (It also was during the pandemic, when even the show was done remotely, in the safety of each contestant's homes. So, she may have been alone, overwhelmed and afraid, and didn't have options to get some advice, outside of AI.)

AI seems to be getting a lot of the blame for NOT helping Just Sam after her win. But, is it really their fault, if she turns down the contract and stuff they were willing to do for her? It's also no guarantee, even with those that signed a recording contract that it would lead to any greater success than the win, itself.

It sounds more like she has financial problems with budgeting her finances and finding OTHER alternatives for making money through singing, or other ways of finding a job.

What do you guys think?

I agree. I saw an article, too. But it was all to get the sympathy and nothing about the contract.

Lots of winners have failed and I just chalk her up to someone else that did. Our choices have a lot of bearing on where we end up. Not always and are not victim blaming or shaming, but I just wonder about this.

Many stories reported by TMZ seem on the same level as the National Enquirer when it comes to factual/balanced/accurate reporting. I don't know what the facts are in this particular situation, but not much was mentioned about the contract which seems like an important piece of information to put the story in the proper context.

Glad Iam won but I really feel the girl with the squeaky talking voice was really outperforming him before she got voted off. Which shocked because didn't think she was that good in audtion.
