American Idol 2023

So this is the first time I'm seeing the show with the current judges. I don't recall the original judges being so mentoring.

I stopped watching the original show several years ago when S. Cowell was one of the judges and purposely made rude/mean/condescending comments to the contestants. Then he would act surprised when another judge told him his remarks were inappropriate. Whether it was his boorish personality or the show producers encouraging that sort of behavior to drive ratings, I stopped watching. Glad he is no longer involved. Coaches need to be supportive and provide constructive criticism. Funny on America's Got Talent, Simon no longer acts mean/nasty toward contestants, leading me to believe it was an act. My impression is that contestants get a lot of vocal coaching along the way, but you rarely see any of that on camera.

There was also a period of time when they had new judges each year some seemed totally out of place in that role. I think the 3 current judges do a great job and work well together. In several prior years, coaches have made it clear who their favorites were which I think slanted the voting toward those individuals. I think the show format works best when judges remain neutral during the competition.

Lots of great talent this year. I felt sorry for Fire, but they never should have let her go to Hollywood. I think they knew from the start she would not be in the top 24 so why build her up just to let her down. And I really do not understand why Nutsa was even allowed to try out. She is not American, it’s called American Idol, not World Idol. I hope America votes her off quickly. Love the guy who sang Sound of Silence, right now he is my pick to win.

My worry for her is her emotional state/stability more than anything…you can just hear it when she speaks…her background story…I do worry that this experience could potentially cause more damage for her(feeling let down/abandoned etc) I think her saving grace will definitely be needing to stay strong for her daughter and hoping she takes what the judges said to heart and finds a path to a stronger her. Wherever she may land. My biggest issue with her making it that far is that she was worlds away from the higher talent in the competition and I feel like they put people through sometimes for their stories rather than their talent-maybe hoping they will surprise them but a lot is for ratings and I feel like that can cause damage to an already fragile person if they really don’t have a shot. The other two I feel(like you said) have more opportunities to end up somewhere else possibly. Especially the burger guy-he has a voice that could definitely land him in a cover band somewhere-he’s entertaining
Exactly my thoughts.

She doesn't have the talent to make a living as a singer even on a local level IMO and the Judges knew that from the beginning.

The emotional toll of her getting her hopes up by the Judges sending her to Hollywood was not worth any possible benefit IMO.

She was DEVASTATED-very sad to see.

(Maybe a Business owner in her area will offer her some sort of entry level job and give her a chance at a better life, but there probably aren't any entry levels where she can make what she is making at her current employment.Sad situation and I am not at all sure that AI didn't make it even sadder for her.)

Some are saying Nutsa is appropriately named .

JUST KIDDING! :)

It's sometimes less about talent than it is about attitude. I had a really great teacher who turned out a lot of successful artists, tell us all the time, "Attitude monitors talent."

We've all seen some really talented, super successful stars kill their careers (or even themselves,) due to their attitude: either about their career, how they deal with other people, or their attitude in their personal lives. Whitney Houston for one.

Someone on AI who took herself out of the running with her attitude was the girl who was partnered up with Nutsa for the duet, who acted all victimy and openly threw Nutsa under a bus, (even though Nutsa was selfish.) I don't remember that girl's voice, but you could tell that the judges wrote her off for her attitude.

And I kind of hesitate to mention these two people, as I don't want to derail this thread and we go way off topic, (so let's all stay on topic,) but there's the Sussexes, Harry & Meghan. I had such hope for them at the beginning. That Harry could continue to do great work, bringing international attention to great causes like Diana did after leaving the royal family, bring attention to the leftover landmine after wars. But, instead, the Sussexes attitudes have been nothing but whiny, complaining and being VICTIMS and keeping the attention on themselves. :headache: :badpc:

For people whose attitudes helped or made their careers: it was thought that Robert Downey Jr. had ended his career when he went to prison & rehab for drug charges. But, he's kept himself clean & sober and has made a successful comeback due to his attitude.

At the other end of the spectrum, we've seen people who have what would be considered moderate singing talent have successful careers. Like Cyndi Lauper and Madonna would never have made it on AI for their voices, yet they've proven with their attitudes and fortitude, that Madonna had imaginative performance ability and sticking power (for a while,) and Cyndi had outrageousness and later comeback power. Cyndi's talent is actually in her songwriting. She could have thought to herself that she was only an 80's star and remained in has-been semi-obscurity. Instead, she wrote and won the Tony award for Kinky Boots and has proven she is a devoted activist for the LGBTQ+community and outliers in general. She's going to stick around.

Attitude monitors talent. Or, put another way: Attitude monitors talent.

The girl partnered with Nutsa did not show any class about the situation and was so passive aggressive-who wants to work with someone like that? I get it-she was frustrated and felt her chance was in jeopardy and I feel for her about that…however-I feel she could have handled that much better than she did
She’s not the first person whose partner just disappeared or was uncooperative…there are scenarios like that every single season

Apparently, she & her daughter just moved to England to live with her boyfriend (who looks like a nice young man around her same age). And she also has pictures of herself on Instagram traveling to Miami, Virginia Beach, New Orleans and Spain in the past couple months. I don't think she is as down on her luck as the show wanted us to believe.

I agree, there is more to the story.
I saw the photo of her and her daughter on a plane to England. Passports, plane tickets aren't cheap.

I mean-I'm glad she seems to be doing well but geeeeesh...makes you wonder how many of these other stories may be "embellished"

I wonder if getting a Platinum ticket is really much of an advantage.

2 Platinums didn't make Top 26.

I am thinking it could even be a small disadvantage as it puts you under a HUGE spotlight with no room for error after being put "on a pedestal".

Exactly! Makes me wonder if that guy even works at a burger joint or if Cam even raised his siblings.

The sad thing is that so many kids get a ticket to Hollywood and say "this is going to change my life" or "this is going to change my family's life" and then they don't even get shown once during Hollywood week so clearly it does nothing to change their life. Some of the kids who get spotlighted and then don't make Top 24 might get some success but most kids who go to Hollywood gain nothing from it except maybe some mentoring.

I agree with you on the Platinum ticket. Sort of puts a target on you plus they don't have the first round to get the nerves out. If they're really that good, they should easily make it through the first round anyways. And picking partners first didn't seem to be an advantage in the second round.

I agree. Clearly this isn't the first year the show has been on and all of the contestants should have some idea of how this works. Some appear to tryout and act like they have NO idea what all is involved. Making it to Hollywood week or even the top 24 is no guarantee of a successful career in the music industry. Even for those in the past who won the show, they still have to be able to sell records to remain popular. A very few have gone on to big success in music, but far more have fizzled out.

The voting is also done by those who watch the show. Some don't develop a fan base as quickly as others so that also plays a part in who eventually wins. The 'best' or 'most talented' person doesn't necessarily win the show. I would imagine there is a lot going on in the background that gets edited out of what is shown on TV. The judges do seem to make an effort to let contestants know there will likely hear 'no' far more often then 'yes' on their road to a career in music which helps to put it in perspective.

I think the Platinum ticket was an effort to provide some variety in the show so it doesn't become so cookie-cutter in the format each year. However, I agree with the prior comments that doing really well in your first audition also might not translate into progressing as the shows goes on.

It always annoys me that they say so and so is from X, but in reality they live in Y. I know it's not a big deal, but they say Fire is from OK, but actually lived in VA at that time. I know, petty lol.

I think Nutso is more appropriate. :lmao:

I think she was picked to draw the international viewers in to watch.

I do think she will be voted off eventually. As Maya Angelou's quote says, "When people show you who they are, believe them." Her self-centeredness did her in and will bite her in the butt eventually.

Lionel Ritchie's career disappeared for a few decades. I think he had no sympathy for her that she couldn't handle a situation falling apart one night.

What I would have done when Nutso said she was going to bed was tell her to just sing it with her one more time, so I could get it recorded on my phone, so I could keep rehearsing while she was in bed.

Then I would have stayed in the room with the pianist and, it looked like their coach, and played the recording and worked by myself with them and got my part to the way I wanted. So, this way, Nutso could sing her part as she had rehearsed and I could do mine. If she's surprised or confused during the actual performance, too bad, she should have stayed up to rehearse with me.

I mean-how many times do two or more artists record their parts for a song at completely different times/places...this would have been a great solution

I also think it means they don't get the practice they need. This IS a competition, yet they don't get up to perform and practice what that takes? :confused3 That's not doing them any favors.

I didn't think Cam, who sang Hallelujah, deserved a platinum ticket. He kept breaking up sentences during the song, as he didn't know how to do proper breath support through a full musical phrase. I think the show picked him as they needed some religious/Christian rock contestants. And when he sang The Impossible Dream, again he didn't really show much range or depth. His voice is too quiet and soft. Cam never brought it home at the end. (Watch Luther Vandross' version on YouTube for this song should be done.) Cam needed the practice of singing another song and the behind the scenes mentoring/coaching, that I think they get.

Although, I don't really think it would have kept him on in the end. But, maybe it would help him to be a better local, Christian rock singer.

Or not sung together at all. We see all the time, some famous singer surprises a person on Oprah or while they are performing somewhere, and they sing together and one just starts doing harmony and it comes out beautifully.

Then there was Fire's situation. When her duet partner bailed and didn't even bother singing so Fire could still have a chance to do what they rehearsed, and that other girl stepped up to sing with her, they had never sung it together before. And she was willing to let Fire sing lead and back her up mostly.

BTW, that other girl, that was the second time she openly helped out another contestant. When the guy with autism didn't have a partner, she and her partner raised their hands so they could do the trio together.

I don't know how far she will get with her voice, but I hope viewers noted her generosity and graciousness toward helping others who are down. :thumbsup2 I don't think it was just an ambitious move. And just as Nutso can go, I hope this one stays around long enough that it helps her out once she's off the show.
