Amazon Fire TV Stick deal: $19 for Prime members

I don't think that smile is really a referral... it is just a setting you can set on amazon where they make donations of your choice. It is simply another name for the plain old amazon site.

You can choose which organization you want to donate to. It is really awesome! I choose our English Cocker Rescue.

I think for 19bucks this is a great deal. We have no use for one but hubby still got one lol. Thought it would be nice to take when we go on vacations.

I ordered two yesterday morning with a guaranteed delivery date of 11/19. I am curious as to why it comes with a powercord? A stick would be useless as a stick if it needs plugged in. ETA: Turns out it DOES need plugged in for the WiFi. :(

Also, how do you set up the smile account?

ETA: nevermind. I figured it out.

Chromecast also has to be plugged in to work. I keep debating about this but I don't want to buy another device to bring entertainment in my home

I ordered one for my daughter, but it said it won't be delivered until Jan. 9th. I sure hope it ends up coming in earlier, as its a Christmas gift.

Mine says Christmas Eve estimated delivery... oh well, something to look forward to eh. I am kind of excited about it.

OK, I went for it too. :goodvibes

Now what? LOL I made sure my TV has the HDMI slot, and we have DSL. We do not currently have Netflix or any subscriptions other than Dish - America's Top 250 for the sports channels. *rolls eyes*

I'm not sure our DSL will be fast enough to make this enjoyable, but for $19 I figured I'd give it a whirl. So I would appreciate basic suggestions for how this thing can be used, with or without buying extra subscriptions.

Be gentle with me, I'm not stupid and used to be fairly tech savvy, but it doesn't really interest me much anymore.

Thanks! :flower3:

If you have amazon prime you have access to their streaming.

And how would that work? I guess there's going to be some sort of home page to choose Prime streaming, and then a list of available programs?

Full disclosure: when we had HBO I would use HBO Go on my phone, but that's the extent of my streaming skills - if that is indeed what HBO Go is.

For reference, I am able to hook up a TV, computer, etc., but I think wifi devices are magic. Reading the information on Amazon about this thing, I didn't know what half the references were. Flinging? Mirroring? :headache:

You just have to click on the app after you plug your stick in, log in using your amazon log in info and then you'll be able to browse through their collection of movies/TV shows. You can watch now on your computer or any other smart device, you don't have to wait for the stick to come in the mail.

I've never had HBO Go, but I would assume it is very similar.

Thank you for your help! I can't wait to play with the TV when I get home!

Sort of related question to anyone - could our wireless router be a reason for our slow, unreliable internet? It's the original one we've had for . . . 8 years or more, and we have 3 phones, an iPad, and a laptop pulling from it. When I've searched on "AT&T slow DSL" I get lots of responses saying they were told they needed a new router, but it made no difference, and that there are simply too many customers added to the system. We have the highest speed DSL offered for our area (I'm rural).

Discount not available with Student Prime? I'm not getting the $20 off.

It should be "plug and play" when it comes to your Amazon Prime features, because the advertisement says that it will be linked to your Prime account (that's how you got it for the cheaper price). So when it comes you will plug it into the power source, and into your tv, it will boot up, and on the screen you will see a variety of icons (Amazon Prime, Netfix, Hulu, etc). It comes with a remote (although you can't yell "Gary Busey" into it, the voice recognition one is a seperate purchase), so you will toggle to whichever icon you wish to use, click on it, and it will open. Amazon Prime icon should give you immediate access to all your tv shows/movies, just like it does on a Kindle Fire or other Kindle product (very user friendly). If you click on a different icon, it will ask for your user information first (or if you want to join, if you're not already a paid user), and then will remember it from there on. Huluplus and Netflix usually offer a 30 day free trial period, so you can try them out and see if you use them much.

Hope that helps!

Terri

It ended this morning.

Thanks. I noticed that someone had ordered and it looked like it was "today" by the post time. I've been on vacation and never looked at the DIS while I was gone. Boohoo for me.
