Alaska Ports on your Own

We are cruising to Alaska August 2014. There are 11 in our group and we all really want to see the bears catching the salmon !
Can anyone recommend a tour company ?
If you booked this through DCL what was your experience like ?
My dh and I are platinum, the rest are silver. Will these tours through Disney sell out ? Should we book through an independent company ?
Are children permitted ?
Did you feel you were safe ??

We booked with Alaskan Green Jeeps in Skagway to get a Jeep on our own for the day. It was our second time to AK and thought we'd venture out on our own up to Caribou Crossing and Carcross. We loved the flexibility of being able to stop when we wanted and stay someplace as long as we wanted. We picked up the Jeep about 8:15 and dropped it off at 3:30 - you can keep it until 6pm. The cost was $184, including taxes, and gas cost us about $35 for a 2 door Jeep for 3 people. They also have 4 door Jeeps for $20 more.
We were originally going to book the Jeep tour thru DCL, but at $140/person and you are with a tour for 5½-6 hours and can't venture out on your own the savings alone was worth it.

You pay for the Jeep before you arrive in Skagway, but can cancel ahead of time if needed.

We booked with family air to anan creek in July. The bear trips sell out private so not too early to book now. Have heard good things about islan wings too. Many sites are permitted so the earlier the better to book. The tours I looked into allowed kids. If you check the websites, you can see full descriptions. Best site spends on when in month you are going.

Does anyone know whether there are any signs in SKagway and Juneau with the name of that port. i.e "Welcome to Juneau".

I know there's the big Ketchikan one. I like to take a photo in each place.

We don't have much time in Juneau to explore the town (only 30 minutes before we meet the Harv & Marv bus) so if there is a cool Juneau sign I'd like to know where it is so i can go and get a photograph taken!
