Al Sharpton Strikes Again!

Let's not forget Big Al's efforts in the Tawana Brawley incident. He's the worst kind of human.

So the man made a mistake, non of us are perfect. I mean really you all keep bringing up Tawana Brawley which was what 20 years ago?

I'm talking about the now-today not yesteryear!

About the 50 shots:
It all happens in seconds. If you're not the one that fired the shots, you don't know who did (bad guy/good guy) so if one shot is fired, then everyone starts shooting. The only opinion I can trust on this is that of my husband (NYPD). He told me, unless you're in my shoes, you have no idea.
This all happened in my husband's precinct.

Ok, well maybe these cops weren't as alert as they are hired to be. How can you fire 50 shot because you believe that you were being shot at yet none of the victims had a gun nor was one found on the scene. Maybe what they heard was themselves shooting and got overzealous. I don't buy it.

Typical...

Yep it's very typical, but not surprising. Some people really need to be careful of what they say. They don't know what might land on their little perfect door steps in their perfect little world.

I mean who's to say one of their little prince or princesses might not be mistaken for a thug, because thugs do come in all colors, shapes, and both sexes right?

Yep people really need to be careful because they don't what tomorrow may bring.

We hear Tawana Brawley over and over. Yet we hear nothing about
Amadou Diallo or Abner Louima

He was dead wrong on the Brawley case. However, he was right on Michael Griffith, Yusef Hawkins...

Sorry, I can't say that Benefield was a drug dealer for sure, but he did have a criminal record. My husband spent his NYPD career at the 103 and he said that these strip clubs don't cater to good boys; they're full of pimps, hookers, drugs and guns - that's why the undercovers were there in the first place - because the good, hard-working, tax-paying citizens of Jamaica wanted it shut down and out of their neighborhood.

I think she's referring to something in his past Of course it didn’t have anything to do with what occurred that night.

You're right, it has nothing to do with his past. Btw, did you see the HUGE drug bust at San Diego State University? My goodness 128 arrested for selling cocain, ectasy and methamphetamine. Some fraternity called Theta Chi had the highest number of arrest:sad2:

I'm pretty sure a lot of those parents are just devastated by this. Yep, people need to be careful about what they say. They don't know what unsavory activities their little angels might get into:sad2:

That said, people need to be careful about what they say because GOD forbid one of our son's or daughters be the next Sean Bell or Micheal Mckinny from Ball State.

Don't disobey a police officer.....That is the way I was raised, that's the way I raise my kids, and it is also the law. If a cop tells you to stop, you don't run away, especially if you're innocent. If you run away, the cop's got no other thought than this guy is guilty and to pursue you as such.
As both a BronxaRican and the daughter/wife of NYPD officers, I never understood the whole mentality of disobeying the law. :confused3 It's only going to hurt you in the end.

I teach my son the same things. However, I still worry.:confused3

BronxaRican (I like that) :rotfl: :lmao:

Um you're not preaching to the choir here. I was raised the same way. My dh and I raise our children the same way. Many people have raised their children the same way. It's common sense plain and simple, but some cops are so crooked and misguided they beat first and ask questions later.

That said, good for you that you believe everything your husband tells you. I don't!

Typical...

TYPICAL?!?!? What does THAT mean?

I support the legal system of the United States. When police have to pause further to consider if they are going to go to jail, and be murdered or be lynched for doing their jobs according to the training and oaths they've taken, it's a sad day. So, the police, rescue workers and other witnesses are not to be believed over the facts - 3 a.m., drinking (Bell was legally intoxicated), in a known drug/prostitution area, cars rammed several times, and an officer HEARD them saying they were going to the car to get a gun!

Several of the people who testified against the police were either paid by Al Sharpton or were the other people in the car - not model citizens considering the 12 arrests between the 2 of them before the shooting, and 2 arrests afterward for one of them. Model witnesses, all of them? Or does your "history" not matter? I'm sorry, but someone who has been arrested multiple times should not be considered a credible witness, especially considering what they were doing when this incident happened. Paid witnesses are also generally not credible, with the exception of experts called to testify in their area of expertise. Even then, their testimony is often one sided, depending on who hired them.

I am sick of seeing Al Sharpton spewing his hate and divisive views, "supporting" people solely based on race, as he's proven time and time again.

They were at a strip club. Many men go to strip clubs. Married men go to strip clubs. Women go to strip clubs. Men go to strip clubs behinds their wives back. Some women who think they have the perfect marriage might be shocked to know what their husbands are doing and where they're doing inside and outside of strip clubs!

People make mistakes. People who have been arrested in the past can turn their life around and do positive things, so don't judge those who have walked this road from your ivory tower. They have a right to defend themselves just as you and I do.

And thats what I meant by typical...was not a racist comment but about a racist person with a racist point of view...

And I knew what I was saying

TYPICAL?!?!? What does THAT mean? It's not about supporting AL, it's about supporting the cause. I agree totally with cops having to defend themselves, but that is why they go to the POLICE ACADEMY, to learn how to do it RIGHT. Criminal or not (NOT!) 50 shots was ridiculous and they have every right to protest and tie up anything they want. People are pissed because of that and I'm sorry that somewhere some little boy was missing his field trip but right there, a woman is missing her fiance and her child is missing it's FATHER.

What is the cause exactly...a person with a criminal record got shot because he didnt follow cops orders. thats when problems happen. I dont mean this to sound racist but I am sure it will be taken that way but Blacks, not all but some, are so focused on police brutality and profiling they forget that the laws still apply to them and think just because they get pulled or stopped it was because they are black....I am not syaing it doesnt happen but some blacks are so fearful of it they forget to just do what they are aske to do and they will be fine....I know bad things have happened but its not always the case and like someone mentioned the past is the past. Some things need to be left there right or wrong....So if this guy was shot a killed in one shot it wouldnt be an issue....:confused3 I agree 50 seems like alot but we dont know the whole story....and i am sorry for this womans loss maybe some attention should be made as to why this guy didnt want to stop....because he had a record....:confused3

I am not a racist by any means but I dont agree with Al Sharptons tactics or the people who support him, same goes for the KKK...they are both hate groups plain and simple....reverse discrimination is the same as discrimination...plain and simple....

Also I agree there are bad cops I believe that but who am I gonna trust the kid with a criminal record or a cop....I tend to lean toward the cop....I guess the guy was wrongly accussed with his previous problems too huh....

Strip Club/known drug and prostitution haven. So bad the police were there in an undercover operation. I think NOT the typical strip club, and certainly people in the area knew it was a bad place and should have been avoided. What the heck did they think they were defending themselves from? The police? Okkkaaaayyy.

My kids get in trouble for things they shouldn't be doing, and usually it happens when they're somewhere they shouldn't be. We tell them - you know you get in trouble when you are at/with *** - stay away from there! Pretty simple concept, adults should try that, too.

I know people who have been arrested and have turned their lives around. From my non existent ivory tower I can personally tell you of the few who were able to do that. They're definitely the exception, not the rule. People with criminal records should know that their past will always make them a suspect.

If you're hanging out in crack town at 2 or 3 am, you will likely be stopped by the police, whether you're black, white, purple or green. Ram cars in a parking lot escaping the police, yep, they'll shoot at you instead of being run over by your car.

The other guys in the car better be happy this didn't happen in Florida, if an accomplice is killed, even by the police or an accident, in the commission of a crime, others involved would be charged with murder.

That said, good for you that you believe everything your husband tells you. I don't!

So you have a marriage built on some trust but not total trust....thats what gets you into problems...if you dont trust him 100% why are you married to him???? You love him???? if so then trust him

I believe my wife 100%....she hasnt given me a reason not too....

good analogy for the kid that got shot....cant trust him 100 percent becuse he had a record....if no record maybe things would have been different.....:confused3

its just a sad situation all the way around....

I still dont see Al protesting any whites getting killed by blacks....but those are justified to him I assume....Still need that apology to the Duke LaCrosse students....also I bet there are some whites protesting too but I bet if it was the other way around a white kid getting killed by a black cop there would be no blacks protesting....I may be wrong

DD, do a search for Channon Christian and Christopher Newsome - this young white couple was carjacked/raped/tortured/murdered/mutilated by a group of blacks. The details are horrendous - but it's not being prosecuted as a hate crime. NO national media coverage.

They didn't have criminal records, were driving through a bad area (it's the way "out" of the university area, where they had been) their only crime was that they were driving her Four Runner and were a white couple.

Where's Al stand on that....I guess they shouldnt have been driving there is his stance....:confused3

I bet it would be a hate crime the other way around...I would put money on it...

I dont see Al's named mentioned....I wonder if he will show up if one of these people get aquitted....hmmmm.....by the way this is horrible....what would possess any person of any color to do this to any other person of any color....just sickening....I know it happens everywhere in all areas but this is just bad.....23 and 21.....:sad2:

Hugh Christopher Newsom, Jr., 23, and Channon Gail Christian, 21, were a couple from Knoxville, Tennessee. According to a Tennessee grand jury, they were murdered and both were raped after being kidnapped early on the morning of January 7, 2007. Their vehicle had been carjacked.[1][2]
Five suspects have been arrested and charged in the case.[3] The grand jury indicted four of the suspects on counts of murder, robbery, kidnapping, rape and theft, while one final suspect faces federal charges as accessory after the fact to carjacking.[2] A purported lack of coverage by the mainstream media, inflamed by erroneous rumors about the case, initially caused a backlash and accusations of racial bias from a variety of conservative and right-wing commentators, as well as some white nationalist groups.[4]

[edit] Crime

According to news reports, Christian and Newsom had gone on a date at a local restaurant on Saturday, January 6, 2007, but did not return home. During their night out, the couple was "hijacked, bound and blindfolded and taken back to Lemaricus Devall 'Slim' Davidson's rented house on Chipman Street."[5]
Christian's parents found her abandoned Toyota 4-Runner two blocks away from the Chipman Street house the following Monday with the help of her mobile phone provider. An envelope recovered from the vehicle yielded fingerprint evidence that led police to Lemaricus Davidson and 2316 Chipman Street. When police went to the address on Tuesday, January 9, they found the home unoccupied and Christian's body in a trash can in the kitchen.[6] Forensic evidence showed that Christian had also been raped ******lly, orally, and anally.[2] [7] One of the suspects, Vanessa Coleman, later told police that, "she witnessed Christian's mouth being cleaned with a bottle of some type of cleaner," in an attempt to remove DNA evidence.[8] Forensic evidence showed significant trauma caused by "an object" to Christian's ******, anus, and mouth, and that she had died slowly in the trash can, suffocating while wrapped in curtains, sheets, and several trash bags.[7] There was also evidence of blunt trauma to her head leading to bruising of the brain in addition to bruises found on her neck, arm, back, and anal region.[9] Coleman also said that she had seen "clothes that were stained with blood and smelled of gas being put in the washing machine at the house."[8] Newsom was shot three times, "his body wrapped in a blanket, set afire and dumped alongside nearby railroad tracks." [6][10] Evidence has also been presented that he had been anally raped.[2][7]

[edit] Reaction

The national news media was initially criticized by some for not giving the crime adequate coverage because the victims were white and the suspects black, but some commentators have explained that "as bad as this crime is, the apparent absence of any interest group involvement or any other 'angle' might also explain the lack of coverage."[5][11][12][13] This criticism was also fueled by erroneous reports of dismemberment, mutilations, and the duration of Christian's rapes allegedly committed by the suspects, especially in early reports.[14] Most of the original reports along with misinformation reported from a federal deputy shortly after the suspects were apprehended in the arresting state of Kentucky were later denied by the District Attorney.[14] This misinformation was capitalized on by white nationalist groups promoting two small demonstrations in Knoxville against the crime and its lack of mainstream media coverage.[15][16][17][18][4]
Police Chief Sterling Owen IV said that there is no indication the crimes were racially motivated and that the murders and assault "appears to have been a random violent act."[19] "There is absolutely no proof of a hate crime," said John Gill, special counsel to Knox County District Atty. Randy Nichols. "We know from our investigation that the people charged in this case were friends with white people, socialized with white people, dated white people. So not only is there no evidence of any racial animus, there's evidence to the contrary."[20] Some commentators have disagreed, notably including white nationalist Hal Turner, claiming that such a crime would include a motive of racial hate. This viewpoint was also repeated, along with erroneous rumors about the crime, in some conservative-leaning media, including blogger Michelle Malkin on Fox News's O'Reilly Factor program.[4] Prior to the DA's statement, Newsom's mother sympathized with the "hate crime" position stating, "It may have started out as a carjacking, but what it developed into was blacks hating whites."[20] Christian's father (addressing those who used his daughter's death to suit their own agenda) appeared ambivalent, stating "[the crime] ain't about you."[4] However, after the conviction of Eric Boyd, Christian clarified his belief that it was a hate crime, stating that "what they did, you don't do unless you hate."[21]

[edit] Victims

Christian moved from Louisiana to Tennessee with her family in 1997. She was a graduate of Farragut High School and a senior majoring in sociology at the University of Tennessee.[22][23] On January 12 her family released a statement to thank the Knoxville community "for all their prayers and everything." A candlelight vigil was held on the university campus January 25, 2007 in her honor. Newsom, a former baseball player for the Halls High School Red Devils, graduated in 2002. He was interred at Woodhaven Memorial Gardens.[24]

[edit] Suspects and indictments

The four indicted were:
  • George Geovonni "Detroit" Thomas, 27, faces a total of 46 charges. Thomas was indicted on 16 counts of felony murder growing out of the rape, robbery, kidnapping, and theft of Christian and Newsom, 2 counts of premeditated murder, 2 counts of especially aggravated robbery, 4 counts of especially aggravated kidnapping, 20 counts of aggravated rape, and 2 counts of theft.
  • Lemaricus Devall "Slim" Davidson, 25, (b. June 13, 1981) faces the same 46 charges as Thomas. Davidson had also completed serving a five-year sentence in Tennessee on a previous felony conviction for carjacking and aggravated robbery on August 5, 2006.
  • Letalvis "Rome" Cobbins, 24, (b. December 20, 1982) also faces the same 46 charges as Thomas. In 2003, Cobbins was convicted of third-degree attempted robbery in New York state. He and Davidson are brothers.
  • Vanessa Coleman, 18, was arrested by police in Lebanon, Kentucky. She faces 40 Tennessee state charges. Coleman was indicted on 12 counts of felony murder growing out of the rape, robbery, kidnapping, and theft of Christian and Newsom, 1 count of premeditated murder (of Christian only), 1 count of especially aggravated robbery (of Newsom only), 4 counts of especially aggravated kidnapping, 20 counts of aggravated rape, and 2 counts of theft.
In each indictment, the large number of rape counts were included to provide a range of options for prosecutors, not to reflect the number of rapes which actually occurred.[25]
Further, Eric DeWayne "E" Boyd, 34, was arrested in connection with the fatal carjacking, though not indicted by the Knox County grand jury. Still, Boyd was charged in federal court as an accessory after the fact for helping the suspects evade the police. Later, Boyd was also accused by Thomas and Cobbins of rape and murder, and a search warrant was obtained for his DNA.[26] The accusations did not result in charges.[27]

[edit] Trials

The four suspects indicted in Knox County were originally scheduled to be tried separately, at trials scheduled between May and August of 2008.[28] However, the trial date for the subjects indicted in Knox County was moved back to 2009 in February of 2008.[29] In an apparent attempt to force the prosecution to try the case with the least forensic evidence first, the attorneys for Thomas filed a motion for a speedy trial, arguing there was no forensic link between their client and the crime scene.[30]
District Attorney Randy Nichols has announced that the state would be seeking the death penalty for both Cobbins (currently the first to go to trial) and Coleman if convicted.[31][32] Davidson has also been indicted for a second robbery which was committed after the murders.[28] The publicity and exaggerated allegations made against the accused led the defense to argue that a change of venue was required in order to ensure a fair trial. However, the state argued that an impartial jury could be found during voir dire, and the presiding judge subsequently denied the motion as "premature."[33]

[edit] Verdicts

On April 16, 2008, Eric Boyd was found guilty in Federal court of being an accessory to murder and for harboring a felon. [34] Boyd's was the first case to go to trial, and he was the only suspect not charged with murder.[9] He faces up to 22 years in prison for the convictions.[35]
