Just got back and I miss that brown goat cheese!!!

We went to Akershus about 1:00 last Thursday with our party of 6 and were seated immediately. I love the staff there, I think they are the friendliest in the land. They are always standing outside to greet you. DH and I have eaten there numerous times and it's our favorite but the rest of the party had not so they were shown the cold buffet and we were seated and the ordering of the hot items was explained that you could order as many as you wanted but they come out 1 at a time.

The cold buffet was full of tasty treats, breads, cheeses and many cold salads. ooh..meat salad..horrible name but very tasty. I could have eaten just off cold table. My fil had 2 full plates from the cold buffet. We each ordered something different for our entree and DH ordered the Viking favorites as his entree and I asked for a second plate for the table to sample and that was fine. The portions were small (by resaurant standards for an 'entree') which was fine because of all the other food. We got to taste each others entree so it worked out great.

No room for dessert..waited for France:p

There was a single dinner next to us, older man, that was grumbling about the whole change and the server was trying to explain the benefits but not sure he bought it. He ordered 3 entrees at once and he was informed they would come out 1 at a time and he was told to start enjoying the cold buffet. That kept him busy and he had no more complaints!!

I was very skeptical but was very happy with the whole experience.

Lunch menu

- Braised lamb and cabbage w/ thyme infused oil and parsley.

- Kjottkaker: beets, gherkins and onions in ground beef and pork w/ braised white cabbage and beef demi (very good)

- Pan-fried Trout: w/ dijon butter and tempered cucumber

- Seared Atlantic Salmon: w/ mixed spring greens and sherry bacon vinaigrette

- Pasta Akershus: fettuccine w/ wild mushroom ragout and Jarlsberg cheese

- Hearty Viking Favorites: seasonal veges, boiled potato, mashed rutabaga, meatballs.

By the way...I found the brown goat cheese at SuperTarget in the cheese case by the deli. Can't think of the name right now but it's in a square block in a red wrapper. I surprised my husband with it!!

Thanks for the excellent update on Akershus! The lunch entrees all sound wonderful. It would be hard to choose.

I've only eaten there once, last February, and loved it. It was still a full hot and cold buffet then. Afterwards, I read on these boards that Akershus planned to discontinue the buffet entirely and go to menu ordering. What a shame that would have been! I kind of lost track after that, so I'm glad to hear that they came up with such a good compromise. :D

The brown goat cheese is called gjetost; isn't that stuff the best? My sister's grandparents (she's technically my half-sister, but whatever, she's my sister :)) are Norwegian and Swedish, so I grew up on gjetost, herring and lefse!

If anyone else is looking for a place to get some gjetost, Prairie Ridge Farms makes a very good one -- it might be the brand DisFam95 found, actually. I'm sure they have a website, but I haven't looked for it.

I love the food at Akershus, but I was disappointed in the herring the last time I was there. Just about everything else was great; I had both the pasta with Jarlsberg and mushrooms (which was excellent) and the hearty viking favorites.

I never ate there under the old format (buffet only), but we ate there last month and I really enjoyed it! I think it's a step up from a standard buffet to have hot items delivered fresh from the kitchen. The salmon for instance was (of course!) better than the buffet salmon at Cape May. (Not that I turn my back on the latter!)

Our server told us that she would often have the goat cheese on buttered lefse for breakfast back in Norway, and encouraged us to try it. Simple but scrumptious!

i went to disney about 2 years ago and we did the princess breakfast there and it was a blast....lots of little kids and then my family with a 11 and 15yr old!

hahaha

but the food and atmosphere were great

I bought two things of ghestost when we ate there last year! I believe the brand they use is called Ski Queen and comes in a red package. I found it at the local farmer's market. It's incredible on thin crisp bread!

On our plane ride home the other night - I asked the family which restaurant was thier favorite - and was shocked to hear Akershus!!!! We really did have a wonderful meal, here! I could just eat mounds of shrimp salad and mashed rutabaggas!

Excellent!
