I would have called this AirTran nightmare, but they have tried to make good. Friday I had a 6:30 PM flight from Chicago to Orlando. When I got there it had been pushed back to 9:00 due to snow in the NE. Oh well, weather happens. The flight from Boston (which is where our flight was originally from) was eventually cancelled. Weather happens. Then they tried to get us another crew (this was about 7PM). They were very sketchy on details, keeping everyone there by saying they could get a crew very shortly, or not until midnight. They were offering no refunds and wouldn't wave the $60 fee to switch reservations. Even the people who tried to change reservations were unable. One woman was told at the gate to go to ticketing. She did so and they told her to call airtran. She did this and after about an hour of trying to get through and waiting on hold a rep told her to go online & then hung up on her. She tried on line and the site was down.
We didn't end up leaving until 1:40 AM, which turns out they knew fairly early this would be the case. My gripe is that they didn't tell us this, allowing those of us able (including folks with small children) to go home for a few hours and come back. Also since they didn't "cancel" the flight we got no cots. People were sleeping all over the floor at the gate.
Then when we did get the announcement that the plane was on the ground in Chicago, a 75ish woman booed the guy, just boo, I was right next to her. The customer svc guy said no one would be allowed to board if we didn't watch our language.
They ended up giving everyone a free round trip ticket, which a lot were satisfied with. I'm going to donate mine to a fundraiser for a friend with medical bills. I won't be flying with them again.
My parents, who just flew Southwest, got a suitcase with a busted wheel back when returning home. My mom buys CHEAP luggage (and consequently plenty of it). They gave her a new, much better, piece of luggage on the spot. I should have known better than to fly anyone else.
