I've always flown SW, but now that they've bought AirTran, how do I know I'll be on a SW plane?

Each airline has their own website. I just booked or tickets through Airtran and as i was reasearching prices, there was a Southwest plane with a link to their website to compare prices. If you book Airtran, then that is who you will fly with. Even though they are owned by the same company, each airline has their own procedures. For example there is no free luggage check on Airtran.

No longer true; AirTran and Southwest have started to codeshare on a few flights. So if you book on the AirTran site, it now could be a Southwest-operated flight. See http://www.ch-aviation.ch/portal/news/16518-southwest-and-airtran-start-limited-codeshare. But there should be a prominent disclosure in the booking path if that's the case.
