Advice needed on VGF2 purchase

You can link the new membership to your DVC login. It will still show up as a different membership but will all be under one login.

And yes, if you were to add them after purchase DVC would create a new membership for those contracts.
It's the date of purchase of the qualified contract that they would be added to that defines how many points they need to own. It's been various levels and DizzyDizney did not say when that 50 pt contract was purchased but it would have been at a time where 50 points or less qualified one for a blue card. Sandi is correct that if you purchased two 75 point contracts now and only added them each to one that neither would be blue card owners. You could add them to both for 150 pts total and they would.

However it sounds like your BWV contract goes back quite some time when just owning qualified you and it's grandfathered in. So even if that were just 25 points if you added them both to that they would also get the same blue card and perks as you do.

Nothing like DVC to make discounts on a t-shirt so complicated!

OK! Thanks for all of your help. A lot of this does make sense now. Yes my BWV points were purchased in the early 2000s. But I REALLY don’t want to split those up with a new membership #.

So the bottom line is if they won’t let me add them both onto both 75 point contracts as new members at time of purchase, they will let me do so after going through the trouble & cost of changing the titles. Still makes no sense 🤷🏻‍♀️

That may be a way to plead your case to split it right away. Tell them you'll just do it after the fact. Will it convince them? I really don't know.

If you go to towards the bottom of page 4 of this Purchasing DVC board, there is a lengthy thread on how to do a gratuitous deed transfer. If they don’t let you add them on your new purchase then you can do it yourself and save.
All of my resale contracts are grandfathered in...no restrictions. In 2018 when we did the transfer I had no idea point amounts were a thing. Just wanted him to have the smallest contract...one never knows what can happen down the road.
As we age, I may do some transfers myself. Just to avoid probate when we are no longer here. I know it can be difficult since it’s out of state.

I have my adult son on all my DVC deeds as a joint tenant w/ right of survivorship because I don’t want him to have to deal with probate in Florida.

Thanks - lots of conflicting info. @Dizzydizney said above they did it with a 50 pt contact (added their son to become a member) . And both my DVC guide and the DVC Quality Assurance team told me on Saturday that if you add a name to an existing contract it does not matter the size of the contract - they will become members without the 150 pt requirement. Will have to see what happens!

The reason they get them for your existing contract is because it is eligible based on when you bought.

So, they don’t need to meet the 150 because that contract was bought before there was a 150 minimum.

There have been different levels needed. When it was changed in 2016, there was a time where a 25 point contract counted..it went to 75 in 2018, 100 in 2019, 125 in 2020, and now 150 as of 2021.

So, it depends on when the contract is bought. Anyone becoming an owner today needs to have 150 to be eligible UNLESS they can be added to someone else’s contract that is grandfathered.

For your sons, there is only two ways to keep them blue card owners. Put them on what you own already, and don’t ever sell it.

Or, buy today and make sure each owns a total of 150.

I also want to add if the contract you currently own expires in 2042, then everyone loses blue card benefits unless they own other qualified contracts that also make them eligible

Thanks again for all your help! The expiration date is another reason why I want to put them on the new VGF contract(s) and not the BWV ones.

So I guess the only question that remains is whether they will let me make the 150 pt purchase as two 75 pt contracts, adding both sons on both (and counting those combined contracts as their 150 pt minimum). And if not I’ll just have to buy it as a single 150 point contract, adding them both onto that (or buy in my name alone and add them after the fact which would be time consuming/costly & just plain frustrating!).

Will report back!

Thank you! Just curious, in a nutshell, what are the probate issues you reference in the event of an owner’s death? Not looking for a detailed legal process, but just generally curious as to major challenges.

They should let you do 75 and 75 because you are already an owner, even though they are not.

Since they have to keep both anyway, I’d just go 150 and be done!!

But let us know!!!!

If you pass on your contract via Will, the heirs must go through probate in Florida to get the title transferred. Assuming you do not live in Florida, your heirs would also have to go through probate in your state of residence.

Can I do a gratuitous transfer for one contract in my use year? I do not want to transfer all the contracts as I have multiple contracts within my use year.

By "add a name" you mean purchase real estate with another adult. There are other ways to do this, like LLCs and trusts. If I were planning to leave this to my kids, that would be how I would set up a direct purchase of this size.

Very helpful thanks. No we don’t live in Florida. I need to update my will anyway so will take all this into account!

I’ve never practiced probate law, but I live on the west coast, my son in the northeast, so he’ll already have to deal w/ probate in my state when the time comes, no need to have the additional requirement of even summary probate in Florida as well. See Drusba’s post in this thread for an excellent summary https://www.disboards.com/threads/p...s-associates-long-term.3851719/#post-63410440

It will become a new membership as the owners will now be different. But, you can definitely do it.

There is another post that mentioned they were not allowed to do less than 150 for adding their husband as a new owner, So, I think they will make you do the 150.

Thanks, my Guide was off today so I’ll find out tomorrow.

OP here, with the verdict! Sorry for the delay as my guide was off yesterday. The answer is no, they won’t let me split the purchase up into two 75-point purchases while allowing my sons to become new members even though I am on the contracts also and the total is 150. My guide did try to get approval. It still doesn’t make any sense as I could have bought them in my name alone, then added them on after the fact, and they would have then become new members. Same contracts, same number of points.

In the end, I decided the time and/or expense of changing title just isn’t worth the hassle to me and so purchased it as a straight 150 point contract. Many thanks to everyone for all of your advice (and thoughts & prayers 😁).
