Wrap up

Just a little background, if you did not peruse my pre trip report, my family and I have been visiting WDW every year for the last 28 years or so. My travel party this year included my adventurous DF, my very pick DM and myself.

I hope you stick around because day 1 is coming up this afternoon! :)

So this year I have decided to get a little more detailed on my reviews. No more micromanaged details as I will be grading the food, service and atmosphere on a 1-10 scale-10 being excellent and 1 being terrible. I think it is more fair to breakdown a restaurant based on number of factors rather than just writing a location off due to bad service or food, because it may have been an off night. I want people to see what the pros and cons are before making a snap judgement.

Cheers,

Erika

September 29,
Arrival Day

Our flight left at 11:30 AM, so we had time for breakfast at the airport Sheraton before heading over to the terminal. Breakfast was pretty wretched. I do not expect a lot, but my food was almost inedible. My father enjoyed his omelet, which I should have had, but I picked the breakfast sliders instead since I wasn’t very hungry.

As unappetizing as the name sounds the presented product was just as bad. The menu stated ham and egg, but it was clearly bacon-not Canadian bacon-straight up bacon. The scrambled eggs were like French style-just barely cooked. I like my eggs that way, but not on a portable breakfast that was designed to eat with your hands. On the sides of our dishes were crispy hash browns, but they were far from being crispy. DM had oatmeal and that is difficult to mess up, so okay satisfied customer there. Service was fine and adequate. The atmosphere was pleasant-the Sheraton had undergone some extensive updates and remodeling.

My opinion: I am sure most travelers there opt for the buffet breakfast, but also offered is the a al carte menu with your basic hotel faire. The food was not incredible, but it is not meant to be either. It is set up to be a convenience for travelers to have a full service sit down meal rather than eating at the fast food outlets at the airport. I am not going to totally throw the place under the bus, but next time I may just order the buffet or oatmeal.

As soon as we cleared security at the Cleveland airport, we grabbed coffee at Dunkin Donuts. I am not a huge coffee drinker-I am really just beginning to dabble, but I know DD has coffee people rave over. I ordered a small cappuccino, which was like ¾ foam, but it was fine. Again not looking for fine beverages at an airport, so no biggie.

Next up Citricos…

Captain Cook’s

In the afternoon after getting settled in the room, we stopped by Captain Cook’s to grab a couple of flatbreads to split for a snack. We had the pepperoni and tomato basil ones. They were a tasty little snack that held our appetites till dinner later.

There are just a few things that really annoy me about Captain Cook’s-the size and service. The place is pretty small, yet people still manage to drag their strollers through the single doors and block up entire sections. There is plenty of space to park them outside since 99% of them are empty. One of my cons with the Polynesian in general is the square footage of public spaces. You get a lot of visitors from other resorts dining here and the spaces are pretty small for the size of the resort.

The other issue is the service-the checkout people get bombarded with questions about the dining plan. I especially love when you are waiting in line and a guest comes over and begins to ask the cm questions slowing down the line. What is that?! Other than the waiting and limited space the place is cute and has good food.

So we have been dining at Citricos for years. It has always had great food and service, until last year unfortunately when we had a lackluster experience. To be fair, last year we had lackluster service at nearly every signature restaurant we dined at, so it wasn’t just Citricos that lacked. This year I was hoping that my discussion with a woman representing guest services help improved the signature restaurants service methods. It was like having the Swedish chef as your server-he was bumbling around, was not very clear when he spoke and I had ordered a ravioli which was served in a broth. Well it was brought to the table sans a spoon-it reminded me of the old “server taste this soup” gag. There were a number of service issues that were inexcusable from a service standpoint at the signature restaurants across the board. Almost like they were testing the waters to see what they could get away with not providing.

So brand new year, brand new experiences I told myself. I am not one to complain for a free meal because I feel many people abuse that power unfortunately. If we have a couple of bad experiences somewhere we simply do not dine there again-ha and blog about it! We dined at a wide variety of restaurants and saw an equal amount of experiences. When we experienced great service I will mention the cm’s name and if the service was not so great I will not mention the name, so I do not feel like I am attacking anyone.

Another note: we do not use the Dining Plan. It just doesn’t seem to be a fit for us overall. What I find annoying is the constant asking at the podium and at the table by the server again! Can’t they just print it on the ticket-I get annoyed with constant repetition? :confused3

Citricos

We arrived at the Grand Floridian via monorail well early. It is always fun to walk around and snap some pictures here since the place is beautiful. We walked up to the podium to check in with Deborah. She said to have a seat and we would be seated shortly. At this time- 7:15 PM, there were no other parties waiting in the lounge area, rather unusual. Shortly thereafter Sandra, from South Africa, greeted us to take us to our table. She was very friendly and welcomed us back to the restaurant while escorting us to our table. We had a lovely view of the pool and lobby from where we were situated. She told us Jason would be our server and he would be with us shortly.

It took a little longer than I like to see, but Jason came over to the table and introduced himself. He has been at WDW for over 20 years. He did look like a familiar face on the waitstaff come to think of it. We ordered beverages and perused the menu while waiting. He returned with the drinks and presented my DM cosmo elegantly. We had a few questions about some items and he was knowledgeable about the menu-explained what certain items were in the tapas plate. I find some chefs tend to use odd culinary license when describing certain dishes, but Jason described the items correctly. He brought the house bread and butter over at this time.

The tapas plate had beef panadas-which I finally realized was probably a typo for empanadas. A panada that I learned about was like a binder-milk and rice-milk in flour-it is a thickening agent. So I was confused as to why this would be an appetizer. However the sign of a great restaurant is one that has direct communication between the front and back of the house. Both parties did their part in learning and explaining the menu, so big kudos to them. There is nothing worse imho than asking what the soup of the day is or how an item is prepared and the server looks at you with the deer in the headlights look. With health consciousness and food allergies it is extremely important that servers can identify potentially hazardous ingredients or understand how food items are prepared and Disney does a great job in that aspect.

We placed our orders and relaxed a bit knowing that tomorrow was our first big day at the Magic Kingdom. The restaurant was about 80% full with some larger tables open. Rarely do you see this place empty, it truly is a hidden gem. It is a wide open space that tends to become a bit loud, but not as loud as Narcoosee’s tends to be. There is no separation in the dining room either, it is merely a large loose “l” shaped room with an open kitchen and dessert station.

Our appetizers arrived and were presented by the food runner. Jason came over shortly after to ensure everything was up to par. My DF went with the cheese plate-the man is like a big mouse. No cheese plate left unturned once again this year. The presentation changes here, but normally you receive Fourme d’Ambert-a mild blue cheese, which happens to be the oldest cheese from France. On the platter are a few other cheese and appropriate accompaniments. DM went with a salad with apples and blue cheese, but sans blue cheese-no blue cheese love from her. It was a nice salad with some toasted spiced nuts, greens and apples-she enjoyed it.

I went with the tapas platter because it sounded interesting and quite frankly I was a tad disappointed with the appetizer and salad course menus here-no more gateau of crab! What? That was a house item, bummer! I find the arancini very bland and the shrimp and feta, which has hung around for years just doesn’t sound appetizing to me. I like menu change up, but not a lot of choices for picky nibblers like DM. The platter included stuffed clams-not a huge fan of clams in the shell-I like clam sauce on pasta or clam chowder, but to sit around and do oysters or clams-it isn’t really my thing. However these were pretty tasty-mainly breadcrumbs and butter. The kobe beef carpaccio with quail egg and capers was light and refreshing. I do happen to love my beef on the rarer side, so this dish is right up my alley. Also on the platter was the infamous beef panadas. Very tasty braised beef surrounded by puff pastry with some earthy spices- I about licked the plate, but did exhibit proper self control by not doing so.

After we were done eating our appetizers-(the entrees did not show up) Jason removed the plates. A number of times last year the entrée showed up before the appetizer plates were clear, mostly because the plates sat for way too long empty. It is understandable at some regular sit down places, but not signature places. It is meant to be fine dining and I do not want to be rushed! I want to enjoy my cocktail, munch on some bread, have my appetizer and then have 10-12 minutes before my entrée arrives.

The plates were gone and we could chat more while Jason refilled the water glasses and removed empty bottles. He even had time to pull out the “crumb catcher” to tidy up after us. My parents ordered a glass of wine with dinner-so Jason presented the bottle and poured them each a glass. Very nice timing as they could enjoy a few sips before mixing in the food.

Our entrée arrived about the time I felt they should have. DF had the roasted king salmon with langostinos and roasted potatoes and vegetables. He was not interested in the langostinos and by the look of them I would agree with his statement. They added a little something extra to the dish, but langostinos , whether they are supposed to be shrimp or crawfish do not get me excited anyhow. The king salmon was a great dish that was prepared very well and he really enjoyed it. DM went with the roasted chicken and subbed sweet potato gratin. It looked nice, but as far as chicken goes in restaurants-it’s always just chicken. It was kind of bland and the potato dish actually was sweet and white potatoes in a gratin form and it just wasn’t the best dish. Hey what do you expect from chicken? She should have had the filet like usual.

I had the beef short rib again this year. Last year it was a tiny little portion, but this year it was much larger. I think they found the more appropriate serving size here as it was a wonderful filling dish. Served with creamy polenta bitter greens and a blood orange demi glace, this dish isn’t for light weights. It is like rib sticking-comfort food. There was a lot of sticky congealed fat along the one end with the connective tissue, but just steer clear of that part. Last year the dish was served with crispy onion strings on top for a crunch, which it lacked this year. It had all of the sweet and sour orange, bitter greens, salty and creamy polenta, but lacked a bit of texture unfortunately.

For dessert, the three of us split the warm chocolate banana torte-a signature item here. A chocoholics dream, this torte is a warm chocolate banana studded flourless cake with a buttery crunch tart base with chocolate ganache, vanilla ice cream and a caramelized banana on top. What a great way to end the evening. Overall, Citricos was back to its old ways offering great service and food. A thought last year may have been a fluke and I was right-thank goodness!

Liberty Tree Tavern

We have never dined at the LTT, primarily because it has been a character experience for years. Last year we popped by the checkout the lunch menu in our never ending quest to try newer places. The lunch menu looked rather appealing, so I booked us a lunch on our first day. I checked us in and the place was jammed! Walk-ins were being turned away at the desk. I do not wake up at 5:45 AM for nothing on my adr right!? I expected a wait to be seated due to the restaurants’ popularity and the few table service restaurants at the Magic Kingdom, so not a big surprise.

We were seated about 20 minutes later in the section to the right of the restaurant near a hearth. Our server Patty greeted us, but was elbow deep in refills for other tables and said she would be back. It took a while, but Patty was back and apologized for her absence earlier. She asked us if we had been there before and since it was no she gave us a rundown of the menu and the house specialties. You could tell she has been here many years and her bubbly personality really makes the experience so pleasant.

She brought back the drinks and took our orders. DM decided to go with the pilgrim’s feast, while my DF and I decided on cheeseburgers. I ordered the house specialty clam chowder and mumsie ordered a house salad to begin. The chowder has a great consistency, but I feel like it is on the bacon heavy side. Bacon or salt pork is a great base ingredient for clam chowder, but the smoky bacon really took away from the clam flavor. In general a tasty chowder served in a larger than normal portion. DM salad was really good and she enjoyed the house strawberry vinaigrette.

I prefer my burgers on the medium rare side and this was the place for a great burger. I know it is not recommended and in some states restaurants cannot serve ground beef products below medium, but they asked so I was tempted. A very fine burger, large patty, cooked well with real cheddar melted on top. It really hit the spot. The pilgrim’s feast was good from my perspective as I sampled some of the offerings of her plate. The turkey was good and the mashed potatoes creamy and delicious. The stuffing was on the soggy side and became a ball of mush. The gravy was quite peculiar-I guess you get accustomed to how you make your own gravy though. It just had a very strong flavor and a paste like consistency. The portion of food is so large there was plenty to eat despite not enjoying the cornbread stuffing.

We were definitely too stuffed for dessert. Although some of them sounded really good, we were off to Chef’s De France later for dinner!!

The Liberty Tree Tavern is quite a popular place. Its location and family friendly traditional cuisine are a huge attraction for many guests. I think we will definitely be back for lunch next year because it was a new and fun experience for us.

Les Chefs De France

This is one of my personal favorites when it comes to dining in WDW. We have been coming here for years and have had great food and service 95% of the time. A couple of times we dined here with a larger party and had spotty service, but it is hard to dine with a larger group and have everyone’s experience be perfect imho. I checked us in early at the podium and the woman gave me this blank stare like I was bothering her-I felt like I was back in France lol!. Ha just kidding I know that not all French people are rude. In fact I have French blood running through my veins! I just remember the days we spent there when traveled to Switzerland and France-there was an obvious between the dining experiences at either country.

We were seated almost immediately and led, by our friendly hostess, to the atrium like side along the fountains with a view of the International Gateway. There are fewer tables in this section, but like the rest of LCDF the tables are tightly squeezed together. The view is lovely because you can see guest strolling down from the bakery and shops, but often times you feel as though people are peering down onto your table from outside.

Noemi rushed over to introduce herself and welcome us. We ordered some drinks-I went with the St. Germain cocktail-a specialty of the house-it is St Germain liqueur (made from elderflower blossoms), sparkling wine/champagne and club soda, while my parents both order a glass of Bordeaux. While waiting for the cocktails, Noemi took our food order. My favorite meal here is the warm goat cheese salad and the duck with orange honey sauce. Parts of the menu are a bit dated, but if you are looking for more hip or modern French cuisine-the menu at Bistro De Paris looks very appealing. DF went with the cheese plate and beef short ribs, while DM ordered the same salad and Alsacienne flatbread.

At the table beside us, a guest was reading the dessert menu aloud to his family. It was one of those “Am I on Candid Camera?” moments as we looked around for a guy holding a microphone. (“Who brought this guy along?” Phil, from the Hangover) I may sound whiny or snotty, but I believe all guests should use their inside voices in a restaurant. Why do people have to shout?-the other guests are no more than 15” away from you. This was not the only restaurant we experienced a guest that was very loud either. It is just really annoying. Luckily, they left before our appetizers arrived so we could chat.

Noemi delivered my cocktail and the glasses of wine. I do not drink a lot of cocktails, but I have begun to dabble in the mixology field. The St Germain cocktail was very refreshing and I think I am going to be heading to the PLCB looking for this particular liqueur. My parents enjoyed the wine they ordered as well. Noemi delivered the bread course, which has changed. The servers used to bring an oversized basket to the table and place a roll on each bread plate with tongs, but now the bread service has been simplified to a single baguette to be shared with the table. The baguette is easier to eat and probably more appealing to most guests because the rolls were good, but they were on the crusty side.

Our first course arrived and I went right for the baked goat cheese. They lightly bread and toast the goat cheese round before sliding it onto an arugula salad along with endive, cherry tomatoes, grapes, toasted walnuts and a light vinaigrette. My DF cheese plate offered some manly sized portions of 4 different French cheeses including goat, brie, a muenster like cheese and Swiss style cheese. The plating here more simple than the signature restaurants and offers some simple field greens as an accompaniment. Sorry the photo turned out a little blurry on this one! The first course was well received and when we were finished Noemi cleared the plates.

Our entrees arrived shortly thereafter. DM was not extremely hungry so she opted for a light dinner of the Alsacienne flatbread. This thin cracker crust pizza is topped with crème fraiche, caramelized onions and crispy bacon. Smooth creamy goodness is how I would describe these flavors. DF had the braised short ribs with pasta, mushrooms and onion. He enjoyed it, but the dish reminded me of a basic pot roast/beef stroganoff. I would like to see some more creativity here for $29 to be honest. My duck was good, the breast was slightly overcooked because they serve the food on extremely hot plates. The duck leg confit was delicious and tender as it should be and the haricot verts and polenta were fine side dishes. I would have like to have seen the polenta topped with cheese more crispy-it just needed a few more seconds under the broiler. Luckily DM could not finish the flatbread herself, so I had to have slice as well.

You must always save room for dessert here. People wonder why the line for the Boulangerie Patissiere is nearly as long as the ride lines every day. Because the desserts are fabulous! They do not offer the same treats, but both have some tasty delicacies. My favorite is the profiteroles with chocolate sauce and vanilla ice cream. Cream puffs or choux pastry is made with flour, eggs, butter and water, which is mixed in a pan over the stove till set then it is dropped into cream puff shapes or piped out with a pastry bag and baked till set. This dough is used to make cream puffs, gougeres, beignets and éclairs. The chocolate sauce is decadent-real chocolate melted down with heavy cream-ganache, not fudge or Hershey’s syrup! DM went with the cream brulee, another classic French dessert.

This is still one of my favorite old stand bys. The food, although it could used some updating, is still very good quality imho. Many people shy away from the restaurant because they think French food is exotic or too far from the normal meat and potatoes eating style. Take a look at the menu, I bet you will find many similar dishes at a local café.

Noemi was very attentive and made sure our meals were done well and we had everything we needed while dining. Overall the service was very good and with the exception of the loud talker at the beginning, the meal was a pleasant experience and we will certainly be back next year for dinner.

I am enjoying your reviews and pics! Thank you for sharing them! I can't wait to read more!

Saturday October 1 we spent the day at Epcot. In lieu of sampling some worldly delicacies from the Food & Wine Fest, we decided to head over to the Boardwalk for lunch. Partly because it was the first weekend of F&W and the crowds were large and partly because DM is picky and there are very few things she will try. We boarded the Friendship and enjoyed the leisurely cruise over to the Boardwalk dock, while we decided where we would dine. Being Saturday, ESPN Club was no doubt packed with college football worshippers, so we decided on Big River Brewing. We have eaten here a couple of times although I think this may have been our last.

Big River Grill & Brewing-sorry no pics here

The joint was very busy for the middle of the day-perhaps other guests deciding to take a break from the parks as well. There was another party in front of us at the outdoor podium, which was unmanned, and a number of people behind us waiting. A server finally came out to escort the first party to their seats while we waited. We waited some more and finally another server came out to seat us. We were seated inside to the right of the restaurant with the bar area. For the amount of guests staying in the Boardwalk/Swolfin/Yacht & Beach Club area, this place is pretty tiny. Then again, the majority of the square footage is tied up in brew kettle space, plus there is a large patio for outdoor seating I suppose.

In the few times that I have been here, the floor has always been dirty with food all over the place and unbussed tables scattered throughout. The atmosphere is a huge letdown-you stand outside and the patio seems so pleasant, but when you head in you are greeted with a low ceiling and awkward dining areas. The metal tall chairs in the bar area are not very comfortable for those of us who only have 25” legs. The other side of the restaurant offers regular tables and a few booths for added comfort.
The place has an industrial feel, much like the type you get at a Chipotle. When I go to a bar or place to have drinks, I want it to be cozy-with padded seating and wood floors, not nasty stained carpet with the remnants of the last guests’ dinner.

Our server eventually came over and took our order. I went with the honey Dijon chicken sandwich, DF ordered the California chicken sandwich and DM asked for a blt because that what she wanted. They have all of the elements for a blt, how hard could it be right? My dad tried a brew, but I went with a Coke-I have to pick and choose my carbs wisely and since they do not have fries and serve ships with the meal, I figured that was a decent trade off. Not a healthy one, but sometimes you have to live a little. I admired the view of the outside and inside of the brew kettles and we chatted while waiting for our food.

The food arrived shortly and our server made sure we had everything we needed. Of course I needed bbq sauce of the side as they neglected to send out with the food. I love a juicy grilled chicken sandwich, but some genius decided to baste the breast with honey mustard and liquid smoke then place it over an open flame grill. The sandwich arrives on a nice fluffy bun with lettuce and tomato, but the chicken breast is so shriveled up in a lump and only covering up 2/3 of the bun. It was a good thing I ordered the bbq sauce because this chicken was so burned and dried out I could barely choke part of it down, yuck. My dad’s chicken sandwich looked nice-with a marinated juicy chicken breast lopped on top of a bun. However, he was totally grossed out by the amount of liquid smoke slathered on it. DM ordered a blt, unfortunately tomatoes have been very bland, they are coming out of season, so ordering a tomato based sandwich was not a great idea on her part. I cannot really fault the restaurant for the fact that she ordered something not offered on the menu.

We wrote off the poor meal knowing that we had an adr for Jiko later. My DF even wrote on the guest check a comment about using less liquid smoke on the chicken. I doubt we will come back in the near future, this place just seem to have some real problems. While were we seated the person whom I believed to be the manager sat down and ate his meal at the low bar area in the front door area. I do not have a problem with him eating, but in the meantime dirty dishes sat on tables and the floor was sprinkled with food bits on one table nearly the whole time we were dining. Guests kept wandering in and seating themselves, even at the dirty tables-then a server would tell them to wait at the podium. Well no one is there and there is no sign telling people to wait to be seated, so what do expect guests to do? Maybe I am missing part of the whole picture, but I definetely do not want to dine at a place like this ever again.

Overall
Food: 6
Service: 7
Atmosphere: 5 what is this place? Theming hard to define

Next up Jiko!

Wow, what a terrible experience...we were going to try it for dinner tomorrow night but I think we will toss up between ESPN and B&C instead

Glad to know about that place, it sounds like it will never make my adr list.
