A fearless trip report- May 12-18th 2011

Great start minus the tantrum wannabe....lol Can't wait to read more.

Loved the update! :thumbsup2 I can so relate to the whole tantrum episode on the airplane. Even though he was older than Everett is, we had a bit of the same issues during Reid's first flights this past December. He did much better on our last trip. What a good idea that stewardess had to make the shaker with the pretzels & cup! I'm hoping I can remember that idea for the next time we fly.

We are right there with you when it comes to not paying for a seat when DS was under 2! And I love Everett's backpack/leash! Colby has the Mickey one!

Our latest flight down to WDW was similar to yours, only it was a night flight and everyone was trying to sleep! Fortunatly most people wear their ear buds these days, so I do not think they heard much of Colby's fussing. We also flew Southwest and the lucky 3rd seat person was a member of a college Lacross team! Poor guy...

Looking forward to reading your adventures of Toddlerhood at WDW. We will be heading back in August right in the midst of the Terrible Twos:scared1:!

I'm joining in. Great job so far:thumbsup2

We waited until our DD was 5 for her first trip so I have never been on a plane with an infant or toddler. We are planning to have more kids and I always tell DH we will take those kids when they are younger, maybe 2ish. I am terrified of having to make the plane trip though. It sounds awful being stuck up in the air and not being able to get up at least, but unless we want to make the 24 hr drive from CT there is really no choice.

My DH made the "I am never coming to Disney again!!!" announcement this trip too. Good luck with that:laughing: I do plan on giving us a few years off to go other places, but once Fantasyland is done we'll be on a plane down.

Episode 4- the update in which I held up an entire bus

When we left off we were headed toward the Magical Express, the only problem was that I didn’t know exactly where it was located. I knew it was on the lower level, and I thought I had walked by a sign that said it was on the “B” side, but I had no idea how to get there and vague recollections of people on the Disboards saying they had gotten lost and ended up in the wrong place. Judging by DH’s mood, I had better figure out where we were going and make no mistakes.

DSCN1758.jpg

first palm tree sighting!

We followed the crush of people into the airport atrium, the one that has the fountain that I love (but did not take a picture of), and then headed over to the monorail.
DH: “Do we need to take the monorail over?”
Me: “Its called the ‘fauxnorail’, and I have no idea”

There appeared to be no other options, and hey, who doesn’t love a monorail ride, so we went ahead and got on. I headed straight to the back, like a good WDW veteran, and sat on the little seat. Everett seemed pretty thrilled with the whole experience, so at least I had one happy camper.

When the ‘fauxnorail’ stopped, since it didn’t go any further, we figured it was a safe bet to exit. I tried to look confident walking through the airport, but in reality, I had no idea where Magical Express was located. We headed toward the elevators, since that was our only option with the stroller, and it was there that I saw a very helpful sign, and knew we were going in the right direction, whew!

After disembarking on the right floor, we headed past all the rental car counters and into new territory, the Magical Express.

DSCN1759.jpg

Now, some of you may be wondering how after taking 50 trips to the world I had never had the pleasure of taking ME. You see, they started the program after I moved to Florida, and since moving to Virginia we have always rented a car, or had someone pick us up from the airport.

We headed into the line and gave our tickets to the helpful CM who ushered us into the right line. I was really glad I had remembered to bring my ME packet with me, because it meant I didn’t have to stand in the long line to confirm my reservation, and luck have it, the bus was right there waiting for us and they began to board as soon as we got into the line.

“Miss- you need to fold up your stroller before entering the bus”- I had been standing there like a dope, watching the classic cartoons and temporarily forgot about the stroller. DH took Everett and helpfully shouted over his shoulder - “put it in the bag”- as he took Everett and boarded the bus.

Shoot- the stroller bag of doom, and the bus is loading! I frantically repeated my morning exertions, pulling and tugging, twisting and shoving, this time with the added bonus of a time constraint. I was sure that the bus was going to leave without me, and I would be left here at the airport with just the stroller.

Once all loaded up I frantically ran out to the bus, nearly knocking over a middle aged couple in my haste. The driver takes one look at my wild-eyed expression and tells me helpfully,” we’re not leaving for a few minutes”- now he tells me!

DSCN1760.jpg

Well I get on the bus and Everett is sitting calmly in DH’s arms so I figure everything is good. I take a quick picture (note the still-grumpy look on Dh’s face), and settle back into my chair, when a nagging thought takes hold- ‘did I put the stroller snack tray back in the bag?’

1305228635743.jpg

still grumpy

In order to get the stroller into the travel bag of doom you have to break it down practically to its elemental atoms, so of course I had to remove the snack tray.

The question keeps nagging at me, but by this time we are actually getting ready to go, the driver is making announcements, and I’m sitting there, trying to reassure myself, when I can’t take it anymore.

“I think I left something in the terminal” I jump up and shout, and run down the isle and off the bus. I frantically scour the area where I folded up the stroller with my eyes, and there is no snack tray to be found. Still not convinced, but knowing I can’t get into the stroller bag until at the resort, I take my seat and stew, while we head off to the land of purple road signs.

I take DS from DH, and Everett promptly lays back on my chest and is asleep before we even pull out of the airport- go figure. I watch the movie with interest, excited to see something I have heard about many times before, but I can’t push that nagging, sinking feeling out of my mind. I looked out the window as the familiar terrain of 417 rushed by.

When I lived in Jacksonville I used to do a lot of work in Central Florida and 417 was a much traveled road. I used to do historic structure surveys, and I would always leave Jacksonville extra early, and work to maximum efficiency , so I could finish up early and then swing by Disney. I was always afraid that someone would see the company logo on the truck in the Magic Kingdom parking lot and rat me out to my boss, but it never happened. I always figured what difference did it make if my work was done, I could either drive back early to Jacksonville, or I could swing by Disney. I do have to admit that those rides on Space Mountain were extra sweet when I took them during normal working hours!

Before I knew it we were within the confines of Disney property, and I was crossing my fingers that we would not be the first resort to be dropped off. I was probably the only person in the history of Magical Express to feel that way, but I really wanted Everett to nap as long as possible, and I was worried he would wake up when we got off the bus.

I was watching out the window, and wouldn’t you know it, we were the first stop. I was excited about finally reaching our destination, but concerned about the logistics. As it turned out, DH took the carry-ons and loaded our stroller off the bus, and I carefully carried Everett down the bus isle-still asleep
Down the bus stairs- still asleep
Out into the porte cochere- still asleep
Into the stroller that DH had taken out of the bag and unfolded- still asleep!

I was thrilled that we were able to transfer a sleeping Everett into the stroller and even more thrilled to find that the snack tray had arrived safe and sound.

I figured that all the stress and drama were finally behind us and I happily entered into the lobby to begin our vacation.
Next up- something goes very right, and something goes very wrong…

The tantrum was not fun- but I know that this is only the beginning :sad2:

What a good idea that stewardess had to make the shaker with the pretzels & cup! I'm hoping I can remember that idea for the next time we fly.

I'm happy to hear that Reid did better when he got a little older, that gives me hope for Everett. The Pretzels were a lifesaver! I'd highly recommend them!

We are right there with you when it comes to not paying for a seat when DS was under 2! And I love Everett's backpack/leash! Colby has the Mickey one!

So cool that your son has the Mickey leash! You didn't happen to be at WDW in Oct 2010 did you? The reason I have the pluto one is that I chased down some poor family at Saratoga Springs to ask them where they got their Mickey leash, so I could find one for Everett. You may have been them!

I think you're right about the earbuds, maybe Everett wasn't as disruptive as I feared in the moment.

I'm joining in. Great job so far:thumbsup2

Where in CT are you from? My DH and I grew up in Cheshire, and I made the drive down to WDW many, many times as a child. It really is an adventure!

I do think that the new Fantasyland will be worth a trip in and of itself! I'm hoping that we'll be moving back to Jacksonville so I can be there for opening day!

No, we were not at Disney in Oct. 2010...I'm a teacher so we usually have to go when the crowds are there (with a few exceptions)!

I'm glad the snack tray made it with you! Strollers can really make or break your vacation! We took 2 last year because my in-laws took the auto-train and we drove a lot. This time we will not have a car, so I got a new to us (used) stroller that combines the best features of the two strollers we did have.

Ah...the adventures of traveling with a toddler! So far you've done a great job of good luck at having no major meltdowns (I consider the meltdown so far a minor one compared to ones I've had with my 5 children) and were able to arrive at your resort in one piece. You are a beautiful family and I am anxious to read more! :surfweb:

The good thing about planes, in my opinion, is that the seats are high and there is noise, so even a screaming baby, and we have had one a couple of times, is only heard in the area just around where you are sitting. Usually, by a couple of rows in front or in back, it's just not that big of a thing.

I'm so glad your snack tray was there. I was stressing along with you, afraid you were going to be scolded by a grumpy hubby. :upsidedow

My SIL is a teacher also, so we have to take our extended family trips during school vacation, so I completely understand!

We took the train to Disney once, all the way from NYC to Sanford, Florida. We were pretty young, and I'm sorry to say my brothers and I were not on our best behavior. There is a reason we only took the train once :rolleyes1

Reading with great interest--we leave in a few weeks with our 2 year old! Loving your adventures!

Yay for leaving in two weeks! Is there anyway I can fit myself into your suitcases? I'll even offer to pay baggage fees!

My hat is off to you for traveling to Disney with five kids! DH keeps pestering me about having another baby, and I keep saying "we'll see" :rolleyes1

Thanks for the kind compliments! :goodvibes

I'm sure the whole situation was much less bothersome to other passengers that I imagined it to be, but it was pretty hairy when we were in the thick of it. Good think we can laugh about it now!

The snack tray definitely made it! But something else important didn't.... popcorn::

Hi! I'm not sure if you got my PM but I've found some more podcasts that are so helpful so thanks! Obviously I found your new trip report too. I love this trip report...I laughed out loud a couple times! Can't wait to read more!

Episode 5- the update the contains the low point of the trip

When we got into the lobby I was pleased to see that it was nearly empty. There was no wait to check in, so we headed right up to the desk.

DSCN1766.jpg

DSCN1767.jpg

I love the harp-shaped fans on ceiling, don't you? I think they are based on actual architectural elements from the Oak Alley plantation, right outside of New Orleans.

DSCN1768.jpg

As I mentioned in the introductions, we were traveling with an entourage, and one section of our group- Bryan and Amy, had checked in the day before. There were some minor snafus with our reservations; I know its really difficult when you need a block of 4 rooms, two of those connecting; but Bryan is really good at dealing with customer service representatives, and he had gotten it all hammered out before we arrived. I had initially requested the mansions, in either Parterre Place or Oak Manor, but a majority of those rooms are being refurbished into new Princess theming, so we had to move to Alligator Bayou to get our requests.

Since I knew where we were ahead of time there were no surprises when we checked in and everything went smoothly. While waiting for everything to be printed out, my cell phone rang, and I saw that it was Orlando Crib Rentals. I had rented a full sized crib for Everett, with the hopes that it would help him sleep better, and make our vacation more enjoyable. I wasn’t expecting them to call so early, but the representative told me that they were on property, and could deliver our crib as soon as we got our room number. I was really pleased with turn of events, and promised that I’d call back as soon as I got our room number.

Meanwhile Dh was having some slight difficulties with paying for our room. We had wanted to pay a portion of the balance with Disney gift cards, and the CM behind the desk had never done that before. I was pretty sure it was possible, and once the manager was called over everything worked out.

I have asked for Disney gift cards for my birthday and Christmas from my family for the past few years. It works out well for everyone, since my family knows that they are getting me something I will really use, and I just save them up until it is time to take a Disney trip. I had almost $200 saved up, so that really helped with paying off the hotel bill!

As soon as I got the room number, which was 3610, in building 36, I called back OCR, and they said that they would meet us at the room. Excellent. I was antsy to get moving, but our CM was very chatty, and DH was a little trapped and kept accepting the park maps and times guides she was handing him.

When we finally got free and moving, I realized that the CM did not put our room keys in the welcome packet- but we did have three maps for the Animal Kingdom-

By that point she was helping another guest, so I tried to nicely get her attention but ended up frantically gesturing, pantomiming putting a key into a door lock. That was not working, so I walked up to the side of the new group of people and politely asked for our room keys.

Once in hand I beat a trail out of the lobby into Alligator Bayou, worried we were keeping the Crib Rental people waiting. Sure enough they had beaten us there, and were waiting outside of the door with our crib in tow.

I apologized and let them into the room, and within seconds flat they had the whole crib set up and ready to go. I was thrilled both with the quality of the crib and bedding and with the service we received. I would definitely give Orlando Crib Rental 5 stars. We set up a time for them to come and collect the crib (although I didn’t want to talk about the end of our stay!) and they were on their way.

At this point I felt I was able to breathe a sigh of relief. We had survived the plane flight, navigated Magical Express like pros and had gotten our crib all set up. Everett was still napping, and the whole vacation was spread out in front of us, what could go wrong?

I dashed off a quick text to Bryan and Amy, letting them know we had arrived, and one to Shane, who had also arrived earlier that day. I knew that Shane had an reservation that night with his friend and traveling partner in crime at Teppan Edo, so I didn’t expect to see him until the next morning. Bryan and Amy texted me back letting us know that they were at DHS, but were planning on returning to the resort soon.

Since there wasn’t much else to do, and I know that it means a lot to DH, we started to unpack the suitcases. Personally, I could live out of the suitcases all vacation and not be bothered in the least, but DH cannot relax until everything is unpacked and put into drawers and cupboards.

The first order of business in my head was to get our camera all set up and ready to go. We had bought a DSLR camera when Everett was born, and even though I’m still using it in auto mode, it does take great pictures and is a big step up from my old point and shoot. The night before we left, I had asked DH to get it ready to go, and told him that he was in charge of packing the camera and camcorder, and that he had to be sure to have all the cords and attachments. I also asked him to plug it in the night before, so it would be all charged and ready to go for our trip, but he declined, saying we could just do it when we arrived. I didn’t want to start a fight so I didn’t press the matter, but I really should have taken it into my own hands.

When I got the camera case out, everything looked OK, but when I opened the main compartment I couldn’t find the charger cord. Hmm, that’s strange. I looked in the side pockets, and then in the front pocket and then I started to panic.
“Mark- where is the cord for the camera”
“Its in the case”
“no, its not”
“yes it is, just look for it”
“can you please come and look for me”
STOMP, STOMP, STOMP “Well, I don’t know why it isn’t in there, it should be there”

It was at this juncture that we hit the low point of the trip. I was angry and upset, because the one thing that I had him pack he didn’t do properly. I felt really let down because I had spent what felt like weeks making detailed packing lists, shopping and organizing everything we would need for the trip. I checked off each item as it went into the suitcase, and that very morning, I had him take out the camera case while I went over each item that should be included, and while looking in the camera bag, he said that everything was accounted for. I know that we all love Disney, and love to plan and prepare for our trips, but it really is WORK, and I was feeling that all my hard work was for naught.

I had him check how much battery life was left on the camera, and it was a measly one bar.

“That’s not even going to get us through one day” I wailed
“It would last longer if you didn’t take dumb pictures of food”- now those are fighting words if I ever heard them
“You should have done what I told you to do, you never do anything right”

At this point I realized that snipping at each other was going to get us nowhere, and only put us in worse moods- so I started to think. My mom was joining us and she hadn’t arrived yet, but when I looked at my watch I realized that she was already at the airport, so she couldn’t help. I asked DH if his dad had the same cord, maybe he could mail us his to use while at Disney, and we could just mail it back when we got home to Virginia- no dice, he had a different brand of camera.

It was then that I realized that I had an ace in the hole. Just a few weeks before this Disney trip I had upgraded my phone to a fancy web-enabled smartphone- could I use that to just order a new cord? I pulled it out and typed in Amazon.com, and sure enough, I found a charger cord, and for only $4.95. DH had gotten a trial of Amazon prime because he is a grad student, so I logged in through his account and was able to get free two day shipping. That means that the cord would be in our possession by Saturday afternoon. It wasn’t perfect, but I could use my point and shoot to make up the difference when the camera died. I was then really happy I had detoured to Walgreens that morning to pick up some batteries.

I made a quick call to the front desk to confirm the hotel’s mailing address and I placed my order. Hopefully everything would end up OK!

After all that drama, I was ready for a break. DH had realized that he also forgot his throat lozenges, (I was wondering why they were sitting out on the dining room table before we left), so I offered to go get him some from the gift shop as a peace offering. Everett was still snoozing away- yes he even slept through our fight- so I left the two of them and headed back to the lobby.

Along the way I was able to take a few shots with my point and shoot. POR is my favorite moderate resort, so I have stayed there many times, but I love the mansion side best, so I always stay there. DH and I had stayed once in the Alligator Bayou side, the night we got engaged, so I was eager to explore it once again.

I headed into Fulton’s General store, and quickly located the lozenges. I then took my time browsing around, thinking about what souvenirs would accompany me home. I had a peaceful walk, and a nice time shopping and I was beginning to forget all about our fight.

cute scene from inside Fultons

On the way back I swung through the food court to pick up our refillable mugs. Now here I have to make a confession, I do bend the mug rules a little. I will gladly buy a new mug every time there is a new design, but if Disney is still using the old mugs, I will keep bringing mine back until they change it up. I know, I know, its wrong, but I also do not need 4 (or more!) sets of the same pattern, and I do not like the idea of filling up landfills with all those extra mugs. I figure that Disney is all about environmentallity, so they would likely be on board with my reasoning, if they took the time to see it from my point of view. I am also confident that Disney gets their money’s worth out of me (in pin sales alone), so they would not be too concerned about a little chicanery.

Since this was our first visit with new mugs, I purchased two, one in pink and one in black and went right over to refill them and then headed back to the room.

Dh was pacified by the gift of throat lozenges and cold coke, and was in a much better mood from there on out, also Everett was up and ready to have some fun- where to next?

Hi! I'm not sure if you got my PM but I've found some more podcasts that are so helpful so thanks! Obviously I found your new trip report too. I love this trip report...I laughed out loud a couple times! Can't wait to read more!

Glad you are enjoying the trip report and the Communicore online podcasts! Thanks for joining in! I'm hoping to record with Shane soon about our trip, including a detailed review of Orlando Crib Rental, so hopefully there will be more episodes out soon.

Ooh your husband must be my husband's long lost brother.
My husband always leaves everything to the last minute and then proceeds to forget to do it all together

Glad you found a way to get a new charger for your camera!

Joining in! I like your writing style, very funny!

It is not a real vacation unless there is at least one blow-up. Although I have to admit I would have lost my mind if my camera charger had been left at home. Hopefully everything is smooth sailing from here on out.

I just caught up on your updates! Isn't it always the biggest relief and sense of accomplishment when you can transfer your sleeping baby around without waking them up? At least that's how I always felt. I felt so sick to my stomach for you about the camera charger. Not having a camera in Disney is one of the worst feelings in the world. My DH has started saying that he wants to stay at Port Orleans one day. I've told him no because we live in south Louisiana & it's like being at home. But, your pictures look really nice & may be changing my mind a bit!

Same for Jill and same for me. At the mention of a gift - ever - our eyes see Disney gift cards!

I was then really happy I had detoured to Walgreens that morning to pick up some batteries.

My charger was left behind once, too, and I went with batteries for the entire trip. Not ideal, but I got my pictures.

DH and I had stayed once in the Alligator Bayou side, the night we got engaged, so I was eager to explore it once again.

Beautiful place, and I hope you were able to forget the fighting and recapture some of what you had felt before on your engagement night. :lovestruc

Episode 6- the one in which good friends are reunited

Since Everett was up and already attempting to destroy the hotel room, I decided to do some quick baby-proofing. I had brought outlet covers, so I put those in any exposed plugs, I moved anything sharp, heavy or potentially hazardous up out of the reach of pudgy baby fingers and I did a quick visual sweep under the beds to make sure that there were no surprise choking hazards lurking unseen.

While looking under the beds, I discovered that we were in one of the trundle bed rooms, and interested I pulled it out from under the bed. Of course Everett and Mark had to come over and investigate, and I made Mark lay down on it so I could get a feel for the scale of the bed.

I know that Disney says that the fifth person in the room has to be a junior or younger, but I really think that an adult could sleep there in a pinch.

DSCN1772.jpg

anymore wisecracks about food pictures and this is where you will be sleeping, mister!

Once I had secured the room, we decided to go for a walk. :headache:

Everett was antsy from being confined all day, so we let him meander down the path, and he headed right to the quiet pool. I figured that it couldn’t hurt to let him dip his feet in, so I took off both of our sandals, and sat on the edge of the pool.

Everett immediately realized that he could splash both himself and mommy by kicking his feet, so he went to work, pumping those little legs up and down as hard as he could.

Mark sat in a lounge chair, safely away from the splash zone.

After a few minutes, I caught sight of Bryan and Amy heading back to the room and called over a quick hello. I got Everett out of the water- he was less than thrilled- but quickly got over it when he realized that we were going to hang outside for a few minutes and he could climb up and down the stairs.

Let me digress here for a few minutes and mention that even though we were technically on the first floor, there were still three steps up to the rooms. I understand that the imagineers were trying to recreate bayou architecture, where everything is built on stilts, but it was a real pain with the stroller. I guess that some buildings have ramps for handicapped access, but ours was not one of them. It wasn’t a total deal breaker, but it really made me wish we had ended up in the mansions.

Despite my annoyance with the steps, it was a wonderful reunion between good friends. I met Bryan back in 2007 at the event previously known as Mousefest. He was the co-host of the All About the Mouse Disney Podcast and I was a listener of the show. I attended some of his meets, and met his wife Amy, and since we all lived in Jacksonville Florida we started hanging out. At first it was just meeting up at Disney for various fan events, but we quickly became better friends and spending time together in Jacksonville, meeting up for happy hour and having cookouts. Now I consider Bryan and Amy some of my best friends, we take vacations together, they’ve been up to visit us in DC, and I’m really hoping that we can move back to Jacksonville next June to continue our adventures. I am really thankful for the Disney community, because without it, we probably never would have met.

After the meet and greet, we decided to head over to the food court to get some dinner. The idea of heading to DTD to eat was discussed, but it was getting late, and I wanted to get Everett to bed at a decent hour so that he would be ready and raring to go for our first day in the parks.

We enjoyed the walk over to the Riverside Mill for the first (of many) food court meals. I have found that we spend an inordinate amount of time in the foodcourts vacationing with Everett, and by the end of our last vacation I was getting really tired of the flatbreads at SSR. I was looking forward to the varied offerings at POR, so we could mix it up a little (of course, I still ended up eating the same thing more than once, but it was the illusion of choice that made all the difference ;) )

I sent Mark to get his food, while I scouted for a table with Everett. The place was nearly deserted, so we had plenty of choices for seating, and I found the perfect table. We, incidentally, ended up eating at that table every time we ate at the food court, by the end of the week I was joking that we should stick a little “reserved” sign on it.

I worked on the intricate dance of getting Everett into the high chair and ready to eat, an event that has more steps than the solo in Swan Lake. I had to hunt down a highchair, swab it down with anti-bacterial wipes (Everett has been known to munch on the wood bars when what we are offering to eat is not up to his exacting standards), lift Everett from the stroller into the highchair, get him to put both legs through the holes (as opposed to two legs in one hole), grab the straps to secure him down, and then have to start the whole process over again because the straps are broken…

Whew, this is wearing me out just typing it, let’s just leave it at “It’s complicated”

By the point I was done getting Everett situated, Mark had returned to the table with his food and a cheese pizza for Everett. I figured that this was a good bet, cheese and bread are the two major food groups in Everett’s diet, so the chances of him actually eating the food, as opposed to throwing it on the floor, were in our favor. Lets be honest here, who doesn’t love cheese and bread (I type this as I am chowing down on grilled cheese for lunch).

I tentatively offered Everett a slice of pizza, trying to play it cool, because like a small woodland creature he can smell fear. Success! He ate it!

He actually went on to consume the whole pizza, and then the grapes, and some of DH’s breadsticks. I guess I shouldn’t have worried, disturbing and entire plane full of people must build up an appetite.

I got up and chose the “create your own pasta” for my dinner, which was huge! I could have easily shared it with your typically vacationing family of four. It was good though, so I put a noticeable dent into all that pasta largess.

After dinner it was getting late, so it was time to surmount the next obstacle of the day, getting Everett to sleep. Let me start by saying that between 12 months and three weeks prior to our trip he was a model sleeper. I could just put him in the crib and he would just go right to sleep, with no issues or protests at all. Three weeks before the trip I took him to visit my parents in Connecticut, and after that all heck broke loose. He didn’t want to sleep at all in Connecticut, and then when we got back Everett came down with a cold which progressed into a bad cough. He was pretty much fine during the day, but at night he would wake himself up every time he coughed, and then become completely hysterical and it would take us HOURS to get him back to sleep- just in time for him to start coughing again.

I was actually considering cancelling the trip, and I might have if we weren’t traveling with such a large group of people and I didn’t want to impact everyone else’s plans. I kept hoping that he would be over it before we left, and two days before the trip he began to seem on the mend.

I was really, really concerned that we were going to have a redo of our last disastrous trip, and end up wandering around the parks like zombies, functioning on next to zero sleep.

At this point there was nothing to do but give it the old college try. We did our best to re-create DS’s bedtime routine, and I had brought two of his favorite stuffed animals from home, along with his crib soother.

I rocked him in my arms, and then then tried to gently place him in the crib- only to have him immediately start screaming. I took him out and held him for longer this time, long enough to have his breathing even out and know he was headed down the road to sleep- but once again, as soon as he touched the crib, he was awake and screaming.

We had requested connecting rooms with Bryan and Amy, with the plan being that once Everett was asleep, we could hang out in their room without disturbing Everett. Mark was over there while I worked on Everett, and after about a half hour, I figured it was time to switch off.

I went and joined Bryan and Amy and sent Mark in to deal with Everett. We hung out chatting and watching bad TV, and I was watching the time tick by. I didn’t hear any noises coming from the next room, but Mark was still in there. After 45 mins had gone by I decided to go and investigate and stuck my head in connecting door.

There was Mark, laying in the bed.
“What are you doing” I whispered
“Sleeping” Mark said
“Well come over here and join us, don’t be silly”
“I can’t, he’ll fall out of bed”
At this point I was very confused, who was going to fall out of bed?

Well, Mark had taken Everett into bed with him, and he had finally fallen asleep. The only problem was that he was in the bed and not in his crib. I had moved him with success once before that day- did I have the guts to risk it again?

I figured I would go for it! I had Mark get up and get out of the way, and I, holding my breath, ever so slowly and gently lifted Everett off the bed and carefully carried him to the crib and laid him down without even the slightest flutter of eyelashes.

I tiptoed out of the room, happy that the first major hurtle of the night was behind us. He was asleep, now all he had to do was stay that way.

Now, where is the last member of our entourage anyway?

Ooh your husband must be my husband's long lost brother.
My husband always leaves everything to the last minute and then proceeds to forget to do it all together

Glad you found a way to get a new charger for your camera!

Dh is usually on the ball about things like this, which is why I was extra dissapointed!

Joining in! I like your writing style, very funny!

It is not a real vacation unless there is at least one blow-up. Although I have to admit I would have lost my mind if my camera charger had been left at home. Hopefully everything is smooth sailing from here on out.

Things did get much better after the great camera cord debacle of 2011

I just caught up on your updates! Isn't it always the biggest relief and sense of accomplishment when you can transfer your sleeping baby around without waking them up? At least that's how I always felt. I felt so sick to my stomach for you about the camera charger. Not having a camera in Disney is one of the worst feelings in the world. My DH has started saying that he wants to stay at Port Orleans one day. I've told him no because we live in south Louisiana & it's like being at home. But, your pictures look really nice & may be changing my mind a bit!

I love POR, it is my favorite of all the moderates, and I'd rank it even above some deluxes. You should definitely give it a chance someday. Even though the theming is close to home, I'm sure it will offer some surprises, that is unless you live in a an actual ante-bellum mansion on the Mississippi, in which case I think it would be a disappointment ;)

Beautiful place, and I hope you were able to forget the fighting and recapture some of what you had felt before on your engagement night. :lovestruc

Things definitely got better, and we were both a lot happier! :cloud9:
