90 day recovery - positive test and date of birth

It’s sad and frustrating to say that despite all precautions, three of the 4 of us have caught Covid and all within 90 days of our 8/12 sailing. (My oldest caught it the last day of classes of his senior year. I jokingly told him he did it wrong; if he was going to catch Covid he should have done it 2 weeks before the end of classes, not the start of his senior summer vacation! I then caught it from him. My husband then caught it just recently on our way back from Australia and is now on Day 9 of recovery, even though he was masked on the flights and all tours. Thankfully we all tested negative for that, and have continued to test negative, so none of us caught it. I miss my bed and can’t wait till my husband is 10 days past recovery…)

Anyway… looking at the 90 day recovery forms, it says that we have to have the DOB on the test results. We didn’t bother with PCRs because our home tests were very clearly positive and we all had symptoms/were sick with fevers. The iHealth app has a record of our positive tests, but the record doesn’t include our DOB, even when I select the “send to Doctor.” We did send the records to the CDC via the app, which I imagine would include our DOBs, but I can’t see a copy of that. Does anyone know if we can use the iHealth records and just include our DOB? Is there a way to get the record sent to the CDC? Could we have our doctors office just confirm the positive result with our DOBs?

We still plan to test ahead of the cruise, but I figured if I could do the 90 day recovery, I could save ourselves the cost of proctored tests for 3 out of 4 of us.

I thought you need test result (with DOB) AND doctors note.

If you have tested positive for COVID-19 within 11 to 90 days of your sail date and would like to be identified as 90-Day-Recovered, please upload to Safe Passage the following:

  • A copy of your previous positive COVID-19 test result which is greater than 11 days and less than 90 days from your expected sail date. The test must have been antigen, NAAT, rapid PCR or lab-based PCR. The test result must include your date of birth.
  • A signed letter (on official letterhead that shows the name, address and phone number of a licensed healthcare provider or public health official) stating that you have recovered from COVID-19 in the last 90 days and are clear for travel.
  • Vaccinated Guests must also upload proof of vaccination in addition to their 90-Day-Recovered documentation.

It really needs to be an official/witnessed test. You also need a doctor’s letter stating recovery. We got our tests as rapid PCR from a local drive-thru testing site. We did get recovery letters from MD Anywhere online (https://mdanywhere.com/). They only do those 18+ and in the US. Others have used https://eviviacare.com/. You may not be eligible for the 90 day recovery.

Yes, sorry. I do know you need both. But it says the test results have to show DOB, and the test results I have do not. What I’m wondering is if my doctor could write a letter for the results confirming positive status. And then also write the letter confirming recovery.

Well, that would be unfortunate. I’ll maybe see if there’s a way to contact Safe Passage and see. I’m still waiting on them to approve our vaccination cards, though, so I cannot even order the proctored tests for the cruise yet. Though I am debating using on point or another service that is less expensive.

We’re these proctored at-home iHealth tests? Or you just registered your result with the iHealth app? I think SafePassage and DCL require an observed test. I have iHealth tests at home and I think could report a positive test result even if it was negative. There’s no “proof” if a third-party doesn’t observe the testing.

I can tell you Safe Passage is very strict about both the letter and the positive test pdf upload. 2 of our 3 letters were rejected because our Dr’s letters didn’t explicitly use the word “recovered”. Had to go back to the Dr and request new letters. We also had to provide our Dr with a pdf of the positive test from cvs in order for them to write the letter. My daughter had tested positive at home but I knew we would need an official positive lab test for Safe Passage so I also took her to cvs for a pcr test. The entire process took weeks, multiple emails to 3 different doctors, and phone calls and emails to Safe Passage. Not sure all that stress was worth it to save $20 x 3 in testing fees.

I've seen a couple of people post on other forums that they had 90 day recovery letters, were clear to sail and then 24 hours before departure were changed to not clear and needing to test. Has anyone here had that happen? My parents have 90 day letters and I'm worried about this happening to them. Does anyone know why that is happening?

I read one of those. I’m not sure if this is what happened, but I suspect that they were “cleared to arrive” not actually “cleared to sail”. It’s kind of confusing when you are looking at your online account. Safe Passage will give you a “clear to arrive” even if they reject your recovery letter. That means you still have to test before you sail just like regular people. You have to click on the area where you uploaded your letter to see if it was accepted or rejected and SP will leave a comment about why it was rejected. After we were rejected and uploaded new letters, SP just never rechecked them and we were pending for days until I called. I find it highly unlikely that they are going back to previously approved letters and rejecting them. They barely have the manpower to look at the files once! Just make sure the letters say “patient has recovered and is cleared to travel”. If the letter doesn’t use the word recovered it will be rejected.

As others have said, you have to have an official documented positive covid test. You can’t just do a home test. Everyone would be doing the recovery letter. I say go get a PCR test now and if still positive proceed with the recovery Letter. If they are negative then you’ll probably test negative for your 2 day rapid test.

I don't have a cruise booked in the next 90 days but I recently had Covid by a home test and went to CVS to get a PCR test so I would have documentation in case a last minute cruise comes up in my future. Home tests alone are not sufficient for Safe Passage and if everyone could just upload their home test results with adding a DOB it would not mean anything as there is no proof except your word. Could lead to abuse of the 90 day recovered system.

I agree...go get a PCR test NOW. You will probably still test positive on a PCR....get it official then get your Dr.'s note.

Editing to add that I did not have to pay for the test at CVS as I was exposed and showed symptoms and was positive on a home test (some of the questions asked online before you can make an appointment). If you say it is only for travel then I believe they do charge. I did have to add my insurance info.

Thanks for all the advice! I shouldn’t have listened to my doctor when my son and I caught Covid, as he said there was no reason to get a PCR test after we tested positive with at-home tests.

My husband is still recovering so I can have him get a PCR test for the documentation.

Otherwise, we’ll just test ahead of the cruise. I just am a worrier by nature and worrier that something will go wrong - the appointment gets canceled, the results won’t upload, safe passage takes too long to approve, safe passage rejects the format of the tests, etc. and then we’d have no time to fix issues.

Speaking of which, how long does it take safe passage to approve vaccination card status? I’m still waiting for approvals, so I can’t even order their service yet, and we sail 8/12. Should I just order through On Point?

Well it's more about the issue that you can still test positive till about 90 days after having had Covid even though you are no longer carrying enough viral particles to pass it on to anyone else. For us it wouldn't be about the testing fees, more than testing a false positive 2 days prior to boarding knowing we don't actually have viral covid.

exactly what I did, I went to CVS and got a PCR test as the unproctored home test would not have been acceptable (a proctored test might be). And it wouldn't be to save testing fees, it would be to avoid testing positive pre-cruise and being denied boarding based on a prior infection.
