So to celebrate (paid the taxes), I went out and got a new Canon 40D body
Andy
Congrats on the new cameras!
That's the same camera I'm looking at. Please let me know how you both like it.
I just fired it up (I think I broke the bank buying one 8G Xtreme III and three 4G Xtreme III CF cards). It does sound different - almost 'too light', in the mirror/shutter dept. The 40D is a replacement for my 10D (and the wife's 20D).
I'll see what it can do tomorrow, the sun is slowly sinking here, and I can't summon the energy to drive the 2 miles to the coast for Sunset LOL.
I did notice that the Raw images are between 11MB and 15MB a piece - yowser.

Hery Andy - not sure if its me or what but the trigger is SUPER sensitive. Ended up shooting SEVERAL hundred shots. I usually shoot about 350-450 shots per whole soccer game. Well, this time, I shot over 550 shots. I guess its trigger happy! Not much weight needed to shot it. So if you got a heavy finger like me - may take a couple of times of using to sensitize yourself to it.
I just looked over the shots - took me over an hour but must say - overall - I am DEFINITELY pleased with this one. I thought I wasn't because I was so used to my other one but a girl (and guy for that matter) can really get to like this one!
Took a couple of times before I was familiar with the menu and browsing but I definitely

the bigger screen. I ended up putting a screen protector (the kind you put on an ipod) and it worked rather well and much cheaper than the ones they sell for about $20-$30 ones.
Your right about the body - however, whatever lens you put on it definitely puts the weight on. I ended up having to put my monopod on it. I was shooting with the 100-400 mm lens and it got too heavy for me.
The 5 frames per second is a big improvement and becomes invaluable when you see it back. During the game - 5 girls crashed and one had her head hit - (she was fine) but it was really neat (not for the girl) but neat for me to see it after the fact and see how they all ended up in the dog pile.
I will have to play with the other options too. I dont' usually shoot raw as I don't have the software to finalize the shots. Besides - who has time to play with just one image?

I knew the size in raw was a deterrment for me so I just stick to jpeg for now.
OH - if you don't have them - I highly sugges getting the new IS lenses - they are definitely a godsend. Although I did find that I don't use the 70-200mm too much. I should have returned it and not let the guy talk me out of it. Right now I'm using the 24-105 and the 100-400 more. But you never know what happens during the PC. It may become my favorite one.
OH OH OH! Did I tell you I managed to snag an open box Olympus 790SW from
Best Buy for $180? Its usually $300 but someone in the dept was tired of seeing it and put it up on clearance. Had a small problem with the battery and when I when back the following day - the store manager was pissed that it had been marked down so much. Apparently - it was below their cost. So I got a replacement battery for $20 after making a big stink about how BB should have checked if the battery worked or disclosed it. I mentioned bad faith and words like that and seems I got a replacement battery for free and another one for $20 (usually they run about $50). Guess it pays to be persistent. I originally bought it to give to my niece but it found a home in my drawer. Its the waterproof one up to 10 ft so when my hand is tired of carrying such a big camera - I can use my point and shoots - the 770SW and the 790SW. BTW, in March Olympus will come out with a 1030SW - drop proof from 6 ft with a 10.1 megapixels and waterproo up to 33 ft like the 770. So those wanting a fairly decent point and shoot might want to wait until then. In talking to the guy in the camera dept - he says many stores will probably want to get rid of their 770 and 790 inventory for this one. The 1030 will run about $400. So my suggestion - check them out.
Oh and the camera works wonders! So easy to change the picture modes. I like it already!
OK enough camera talk for now - sorry - didn't mean to go off - I just get so excited.
