I'm very frightened right now. We are booked on a norwegian flight from BCN to FLL at the end of May. If I am not mistaken we are scheduled on a 737 Max flight which are currently not flying. (No way would I even want to go on this aircraft after all that has been seen and found out!) I am a cheap scape... and now I have myself to blame. I really need some advice on how to get home again. I would get out of BCN if I could find a better way. Any suggestions? Your help is appreciated!!

Best thing you can do is call your airline and talk to them. In the US, Southwest and American are the two airlines most impacted by the grounding of the 737 Max planes. My understanding is Southwest is shifting equipment to minimize the impact. So not every flight originally planned on a 737 Max is automatically cancelled. Some of those flights will be flown on different 737s and some flights not originally scheduled on a 737 Max will be cancelled. I don't know if American is handling it the same way or not, but it would seem to make sense in order to spread the cancellations around a bit. I have no idea how Norwegian Air is addressing the situation so it's best to talk directly to them.

Looking quickly at Flight Tracker, Norwegian seems to be flying 787s on that route.

As long as those planes are grounded, you won't have to worry about flying on one. When is your flight? We don't know how long the grounding will last, some airlines have announced that they won't begin flying them until xyz date (Air Canada, for example, says they won't fly them again until July 1st as the earliest). It's all speculation at this point. You'll need to contact Norwegian Air to get your answer.

I would check your flight itinerary online to see if there are any changes or details and then if not I would call Norwegian. I don't think any of this is b/c you decided to be cheap! Many airlines have 737 MAXs that are now grounded, not only the lower cost airlines.

Ok. I may be crazy or just trying to calm down.... I contacted norwegian, it's a 787 dreamliner flight. The waiting time on hold for them really increased my blood pressure! Thank you to those that left their feedback, Happy Cruising... and may you all have a safe flight back home! ☺

I'm pretty sure that would have been a 737 flight, but they are covering with 787s. IMHO a big upgrade.

Does anyone fly a 737 across the Atlantic? I don't think so...

I just want to let you know that my daughter just flew on the 787 Dreamliner on Norwegian out of Barcelona to the east coast, and she said it's a really, really nice plane. (And this is coming from a college kid who flew back from LHR with us last summer on the big A380 in business class. So I think you're good. ;) ) The Norwegian flight was a part of a spring break trip with college friends and from what I hear it was by far the most economical way they could get home. Hope this helps.

Norwegian has only two TransAtlantic routes that were flying 737 Max - I believe, into PVD and SWF. And they both received either an equipment change or a flight reschedule.

Thanks. I had no idea they were using the 737s for those routes. Then, yes, the 787 is a BIG upgrade!

Yes - they do fly 737 Max 8 across the Atlantic - we were scheduled to fly on a Norwegian Air 737 Max 8 at end of last month from Providence, RI to Dublin - the aircraft was grounded a week before we were scheduled to fly - in the end Norwegian Air switched us to a 787 Dreamliner BUT we had to switch airports - we had to go to Stewart Int'l Airport in New York as the 787 Dreamliner was too big to land/take off from the airport in Providence.

The 787 Dreamliner was wonderful, has an awesome entertainment system, the flight crew were great , it really is a beautiful pane - it all added up to a great flight!! This was a nicer plane than the 737 we were originally scheduled on!! But it was touch and go for few days as we did not even know if we were even going to have a flight at all...

I would not hesitate to fly them again - they really were great with how they handled the 737 Max 8 airplane grounding and we were impressed with the Dreamliner....

I don't feel so bad now. I hope we have a safe journey! It's pretty silly...about 20yrs ago I traveled all around the globe, didn't phase me, but now...let's just say I love cruising!

I'm so glad to hear that you had a wonderful flight! I bet it was touch and go for you... all in all, I'm so so very happy that everyone on this site who took the time to respond, made me feel in the cruising mood again!! Thank you... for putting me at ease!

In addition to the aforementioned Norwegian flights, I believe Westjet also use(d) the 737 MAX on certain Transatlantic services.

I had no idea. We've only flown American, British and Air France on transAtlantic flights over the past few years. I'm mostly flying there from the West Coast, so maybe that's why I've never seen those planes going to Europe.

It is very likely that if the plane is still "grounded", they will either cancel your flight (and you will be able to book another one for no fees) or they will switch airplanes. Either way, I would give them a call. :)
