hi sjtracey
Glad to hear your daughter's appointment went well. Detrol helps relax the bladder muscle so it doesn't spasm. Helps kids not pee so often and keeps them from having daytime accidents. (Won't help much with bed-wetting though).
I do have to ask you one thing though, and this ONLY comes from seeing LOTS of kids with the same problem. Believe it or not, constipation is a common cause of those same symptoms. Even in kids who poop regularly every day. If their bowels are full of stool, it pushes on the bladder, which makes the bladder spasm, causing the symptoms Detrol relieves.
Forgive me, but I am going to get gross here. It's okay though, the kitty litter is humiliating enough--it can't get any worse. Lets say a kid gets out 2 big turds every day, but they could have gotten out 5. 3 are left behind. the next day, they get out 2 big turds--they slide right out. but now they have a surplus of 6. and on it goes, until you have a kids with FULL bowels who has big stools everyday that come out easily. mom and dad would never think of constipation, but the kid IS constipated. And those kids often have frequent urination, urgency, and daytime accidents.
if your doctor already tried a stool softner like Miralax, with no result after 3-4 weeks on it, then Detrol is the way to go.
I debated posting this, believe me, and I say it all with a humble heart. And your daughter may have a different problem altogether. BUT urologists don't usually think about constipation, because most pediatricians have tried a stool softner for urinary urgency/frequency/accidents BEFORE sending them to the urologist.
I've said my peace... now I can sleep. HOPE you aren't too offended.
