I received the green exchange certificate for 4-day ticket (no hopping). We are staying at disney resort (dolphin).
Our first day will be at magic kingdom but we want to exchange the certificate for 4-day ticket the day before at epcot ticket office (short walk from dolphin). This way we can ride the disney shuttle straight to the MK gate instead of TTC.

Q: When will the first day of the 4-day ticket start?

a) when I exchange the certificate with the ticket.
b) at the gate, when I enter the park
c) other

But, there is no need to go to TTC, anyway.
There are Guest Relations and ticket windows just outside the MK gates.
(See #9 below.)

b) is what I thought but then I read this from mousesaver.com and got really confused and thought may be it's a).

"If you buy a Walt Disney World Annual Pass in advance by phone at (407) W-DISNEY or online, you will receive a plastic card that is your “exchange certificate” or voucher for an actual Annual Pass. The exchange certificate must be “activated” (exchanged for the actual Annual Pass) at Guest Services outside of one of the Walt Disney World theme parks, or at the Guest Services Offices in Downtown Disney."

"There’s no real reason to buy an activated pass before your first visit to the park – the clock starts ticking immediately, so it’s just a waste of admission days. "

http://www.mousesavers.com/walt-disney-world-annual-pass-info/ (I know it says annual pass but thought it's relevant)

That info is correct, but it is ONLY relevant to an Annual Pass.

Annual Passes
start counting down when first activated at a ticket booth.
Magic Your Way Tickets start counting down when first used at a park entry point.

Yup. That information about where to exchange the certificate is rather infamous.
