I feel just the opposite. I don't think this decision was well thought through at all. Disney execs make mistakes too. This is a snowball effect:

1.Much fewer people will be renting strollers. What does this mean?
A.People will bring their own strollers, which will create almost unmanageable waits and crowds for buses.
B.Because of point A, people will start renting cars and venturing off of Disney property.
C.People will deal with the price increase for strollers, but in return, have less money to spend at the parks.

Just for fun, I'll start a poll and see what people's plans are going forward.

I see where you are coming from, but I work for the corporate offices of a very large retailer and whenever decisions like this are made we take a look at the the options we have and the pros and cons of each and determine what will be most sensible. I am sure Disney and any other large corporation do the same why they have to make decisions like this, otherwise if decisions were made on a whim, most companies would not last.

I am not saying that I am happy about this, but I just don't think that people look at this from the company perspective, nor do they realize what goes on behind the scenes to force them to make a decisions like this.

A 72% increase?

Greed.

Oh, and we know the people at the Corporate Office never make a mistake!

This is a mistake. A big one. Why upset a large number of your guests? Why drive people to NOT rent a stroller from you? Why drive people to leave the parks for breaks? Why make using your transportation even more of a headache? Not a smart decision at all.

WDW Ticket Prices :

2005 Adult Two Day Magic Your Way Base Ticket: $119

2008 Adult Two Day Magic Your Way Base Ticket : $139 (16% increase)

2005 Adult Annual Pass : $395

2008 Adult Annual Pass : $448 (13% increase)

Stroller Rental: 72% increase ??

Something isn't right here.

Oh wait.. the strollers are 100 % PVC Plastic.. a refined petroleum product.. NOW it all makes sense!

I am not saying that no one ever makes a mistake I am just trying point out that there are reasons why people make descisions.

Add another

D. More people will start staying offsite because benefit of using Disney Transportation will be diminished with extra strollers on buses -- and longer wait time for buses.

I not only have used stroller for DD, but also to carry stuff, including everybody's drink, park maps, etc. It was more convenient to put park schedule, etc. in stroller than to put it in a backpack and then have to constantly dig through it to find it. Also, it's not fun carrying everybody's drinks -- and throwing them out is not an option at the price they charge.

I may still rent - since I only need a single for 8 days, but I'm seriously reconsidering. DD is going to be conditioning on the treadmill,

Oh and a child with tired legs is not a happy site. DD sat down on the road last year when she got tired. So, I ended up carrying her (not fun for me).

DING DING!!!! I THINK WE HAVE A WINNER!!!!!

If it were just based on greed then why would they not keep on raising the stroller prices each year instead of doing it for the first time in 3 years ?

No idea. My guess is, they got to a point where charging anymore would seem ridiculous for a stroller.

Good point.

I would bet money, that come 2009, after Harry Potter, the new coaster, and more resorts open up at Universal, we're going to see declines at the Disney parks (and resorts), and increases at Universal. It's just a matter of time.

All joking aside.. the price of plastic is going up right along with the price of oil... and the price of oil has EASILY gone up 72% since 2005.

These strollers are 100% plastic which is a product refined from oil.

Oil Price Per Barrel in 2005 = $60

Oil Price Per Barrel in 2008 = $103 (give or take)

Percentage increase = 71.6 % ....

Hmm.... :confused3

I bought a great Graco double this past summer at a yard sale for $15!!! DD3.5 doesn't like to be in a stroller anymore, but for the parks she will def. want to be in one. It isn't a side by side and doesn't fit in our trunk, so not sure if we will bring it or not. I'm trying to find a double umbrella. Maybe someone posted it but I didn't read through every post here. I want it cheap...like k-mart cheap. 14.99 for a single.

I know that this opinion is unpopular, but, all I can say is hoorah! Six and Eight year olds riding around on their butts instead of getting exercise, in my mind, is almost criminal. We have a new generation of over-weight, lazy kids that expect everything to be done for them. The one's with the legitimate gripe are the one's with little tiny, young children. The first time I visited my kids were that age (6 & 8) and frankly it never even crossed our minds that a stroller would be necessary. And it wasn't. Taking a longer break is the answer, I'm sure.

I have to agree. Our daughter hasn't been in a stroller since she was 3. I will admit that she is also very tall for her age. :cutie:

Everyone knows their own kids best and if the child really needs a stroller, then more power to them.:goodvibes I think a lot of times though, people are afraid to give the kids a chance and just assume they are going to get tired and cranky (what kid doesn't anyway? :confused3 ) without a stroller.

Just a guess, but maybe Disney is just trying to free up some of the double strollers for people who arrive late with small children only find that they have all been rented out early in the morning to people with older children or just want an extra seat to carry stuff in.

I'm gonna get flamed, but I'm going to go out on a limb and say, it probably won't put a dent in the rentals at all.
1) There are people just like me, who would pay almost any price for convienence (sad, I know). The thought of lugging a stroller from home, then having to deal with busess with the thing. No way. I'd probably still rent a double. Thankfully my kids are teens, I'm thinking of making them push me. When the kids were small, we paid top dollar just to stay on a monorail line resort just for the ease.

2) In disney's overall park attendance, us folks on the dis are probably a very small percentage. They will still be enough first timers who will fork over the dough.

I am not sure if anyone mention this but I think the double strollers are abused. I think many people with older kids, one kid etc... use them for more room for bags, space, sleeping kids etc.... They take up a TON of room in the park. Maybe by raising the price the abuse will stop. The people that really need double strollers will bring their own or pay the price whether they like it or not. Others will hold their bags, make their 8yr old walk, take breaks and so on. I wish the same thing for ECV's. It is just serious overkill at the parks especially in the summer.

I am not saying it is right to increase the prices and I too have kids so I understand the need for young ones to be in strollers but maybe the abuse will be cut because the people that really need them will bring their own strollers.
