Hey Denise,
Your best bet is to get your own mask and snorkel. The ones that you rent or are given on the excursions are basically junk! Go to a dive shop and get a mask that fits. A nice soft silicone skirt that seals well to "your" face will help you out immensely. The snorkel is not as important, but still can be a problem if it leaks. There are three basic designs: The simple "J" design (old school), the semi-dry; which has a top that will divert most water off the tube instead of down, but will allow water in if submersed. The last is a "dry" snorkel, like the Ocean Master that keeps water out. Most of the snorkels available now have a flexible part between the tube and the mouth piece for comfort.
Recommend taking your snorkel and mask to the pool ( or tub if you have a large one). Put the snorkel in your mouth and just breathe as you submerse your face. Keep breathing, but keep the snorkel end from dipping into the water. I would close my eyes, the pool chlorine is a killer.
Now, once your comfortable breathing off the snorkel, put the snorkel on the left side of the mask and put both on.
NOTE: If you get a new (or have a mask that hasn't been used) clean the lenses with simple toothpaste. This cleans the protective layer off and will allow you to use a defog and it will work. Use the defog (spit works, so does baby shampoo, or you can buy the defog that dive shops sell. I like 500psi defog.)
As you snorkel, your face will be pointing down, this should allow the snorkel to stick up and back slightly to avoid being dipped into the water. Take long, slow breaths like your above water and just relax!!
If you want to surface dive, just take a breath and tuck your body. Dive and when surfacing, just blow out forcibly this discharges the water in the snorkel and your good to breath from it again.
Hope this helps you! I love diving in the Southern Calif. waters. Kelp is wonderful!
