We just returned from our first stay at SSR and I wanted to share my impressions. I went in somewhat skeptical based on previous reviews. We spent 7 nights in a one-bedroom in the Congress Park section. I would assume this is one of the more coveted locations due to it’s proximity to Downtown Disney and having a beautiful quiet pool right outside your door. Our unit was ready when we arrived at 2 P.M. and was in outstanding condition. Immaculately clean with only a few very minor signs of wear (a scuff mark or two on the paint, nothing unexpected or of any concern).
The main pool, High Rock Springs, is very appealing to the eye and I liked the zero-entry feature. While I didn’t eat at the Turf Club, I did find it to look very upscale and warm. I also enjoyed the view of the golf course from here. I found the grounds to be very nicely landscaped, the CM’s exceptionally friendly and I was consistently offered a “Welcome Home” at every opportunity (something I get a kick out of). I also found the self –parking near the unit to be very convenient.
So would I stay at SSR again? Absolutely. But having visited all the DVC resorts, SSR would still remain my last choice.
There are some things I simply don’t like about the resort. Some I can put a finger on, others are intangible. Again, it is a very, very nice resort. But personally, I rate the others ahead.
1) The sheets don’t fit the bed. This one baffles me. The furnishings are lovely, upscale and quality made. But I repeat, the sheets don’t (and can’t) fit the bed. There is at least a six inch gap at the bottom of the bed where your feet must lay on bare mattress. Not so appealing. How can this be? Good news is this is easily correctible. Hopefully DVC gets on this right away.
2) OK it’s been beaten to death but this place is HUGE. Many like the spread out feeling and all have different tastes. But for me, the resort is a little too spread out. After walking the parks all day I don’t want a lengthy hike if I can avoid it. I was very glad to have rented a car.
3) Artists Palette. I had a very tasty breakfast here. But for all the genius of Disneys designers, the layout of this place is ludicrous. Even the wonderful CM’s were complaining. The order line splits the restaurant in two forcing everyone to cut across the line with their trays one time to get their beverages and a second time to get utensils which are inexplicably located closet to the gift shop portion, far away from drinks, napkins etc.
Having the gift shop and restaurant serviced by the same cashiers is also a poor decision. When picking up a package delivered from the parks, one stands on the same line as the diners, and the CM must then leave their post and retrieve your package from a storage room in the back. I didn’t have the heart to do this to the diners standing there with their trays piled high and returned later at an “off” hour.
The seating capacity at Artists Palette (at least at breakfast) is seriously lacking. Many guests who just purchased their meals were simply standing there with their trays loaded waiting for someone to leave.
4) My major issue is, well I don’t exactly know. I can’t pinpoint it. Maybe it’s because SSR is a more remote property. Maybe it’s because Hotel Plaza Drive is across the street, or maybe it’s just me. But I absolutely felt as though I was staying off-property. There’s a Donald Duck in the pool and there are Mickey shapes in the fencing, but it just didn’t feel like “Disney” to me. No magic? No whimsy? I honestly don’t know. But when we stopped by BWV, BCV, AKV, and VWL on this same trip, that “feeling” was there.

Now don’t get me wrong. SSR is a beautiful resort. We had a wonderful vacation and I wish I was still there. I expect to be calling MS later this week to make reservations and if SSR is all that’s available I will book it and look forward to our visit. But I will waitlist at all the other resorts.

Glad to hear that SSR is clean and looking great and that the CMs treated you well! Your other complaints are ones that are heard here often...for some it makes a difference, for others it does not.

I understand your comment about not feeling the Disney Magic....we definitely feel it at SSR, but do not at OKW (and we have had pleasant stays there just like you did at SSR). Thanks for the report. :goodvibes

I recently stayed in the Grandstand section of SSR. It was a beautiful resort. I've visited it several times and spent some time walking around, exploring. It was nice.

To me, it also lacks something. I think because it just reminds me of an upscale condo complex that I could find anywhere. The "theme" is just too subdued for me.

I know there are a ton of folks who don't share my opinion, and they love SSR. SSR does have a lot of positives, and it is a great place to stay. To me, I just prefer VWL, BCV, BWV and AKV.

I'm glad that you enjoyed your stay at SSR. I think your comments are pretty fair, and I think even ardent SSR Lovers (and there are many of them!) would admit that the setup in AP is poorly designed. We went in to buy something and ran into the same situation you described with the food and merchandising lines combined.

I do think, however, that SSR has a very "Disney feeling" to it, and that it is a very nice option for DVC owners to have. We tend to like the "hotel like" villas better, but I can see why so many people really do like (and prefer) SSR to other DVC resorts.

I'm sure some will take your comments as "SSR Bashing". To me, it really isn't and I think you went out of your way to compliment the parts of the resort you found appealing.

As always when talking about resorts, it ends up being "different strokes". Just because someone likes Miss Alabama and I prefer Miss Texas doesn't mean we wouldn't accept a date with either one! :rotfl:

I can't speak for all SSR owners, but it doesn't sound like the OP is "bashing" SSR at all! It was a very fair and kind report on the resort. And the best thing is that 2 of his complaints can easily be fixed - the AP set up and the sheets.

I don't think they're bashing either. I enjoyed reading it and thought the OP made valid points-especially about Artist's Point-that place drives me nuts with the crazy layout!!!

On the bed sheet issue-I've never noticed this in the times I've stayed there. Could mousekeeping have made an error?

I like the spread out nature of the resort- but for a lot of folks that doesn't work. I would think families with small kids would have trouble with that.

Part of the reason we like SSR is because it's kind of "un-Disney". It reminds me more of the subdued theming of HHI and VB. Our family is all adults now-Dad is 79, Mom is 69, me at 46 and DN at 21, so we really are fond of the more subdued theming. I think when DN was younger we would have looked on it differently.

SSR is not the only DVC resort with sheets that don't fit. We stayed at OKW, our favorite resort, in November and were faced with the same problem. It has been that way for the past couple of trips we have taken and I just assumed that was how it now was across property.

One would think that at the very least, the sheets would fit the beds at a "deluxe" resort.

Thanks for the report. We have not had the occasion to eat at Artists Palette but the menu selection was not according to our tastes, so that is part of why we've not tried it. And I have found the gift shop to be so tiny that it wasn't worth lookin' around in to me -- I guess the proximity to DTD keeps the selection to a minimum.

I don't understand why Disney cannot use fitted sheets for the beds... I'm seriously considering taking our own fitted sheets to use because I cannot stand for the bottom sheet to come loose.

Anyway, glad you enjoyed your stay.

Passed the "Bash" test! OP is staying her preference, didn't say "becuase of SSR .......blah, blah, blah". Its not here cup of tea, that is why every DVC resort is different.

The AP que line is the pits, not sure what can be done to improve the layout. That is one of the problems of reusing an existing structure. You are stuck with certain limitations that you hope work out in the long run. Funny thing is none of the DVC resorts are perfect. Seems that Disney made a mistake at each resort.

I think that is the great thing about DVC...different options. The resorts all have their positive and negative aspects to different individuals. We stayed at SSR last month for 10 days and had a great time. We enjoyed the fact that the resort was spread out and therefore a little less hectic. The only downside we had was the lack of food choices for such a large resort. We werent really fond of the Palette either and definately agree that the layout is horrendous. On the other hand we had a dedicated 2 bedroom that was in great shape which we loved! Is SSR the same as AKV...no it isnt....but AKV is not SSR either.

Totally agree on the capacity at Artists Palette and the layout.

Like the resort though!

I love SSR. Althought it is a bit of a distance from the parks, because it is removed, it seems a bit more relaxing.
