Hello -

We leave for WDW in 11 days. I had 'sprained' my ankle about 8 weeks ago and it wasn’t healing like I thought it should so I finally broke down and went to an orthopedic specialist a week ago and he ordered an MRI…I just got back from my appointment with the specialist and it turns out that I have actually torn the ligament on the top of my foot…the one that keeps your toe bones together and I have to have surgery to fuse the bones together.

He agreed to wait until I return from my upcoming trip to schedule the surgery however he told me to stay off of it as much as possible. I have a ‘boot’ that I use now to walk and I am planning to rent either a wheelchair or an ECV. I am leaning more toward the ECV because it will only be my 17 yo DD and her friend and myself and I know my DD will help all that she can but she is a teenager after all and I had planned on spending some time alone at F&WF and letting them go off to have fun on their own as well so the ECV would be easier for me to use on my own.

I have read everything I can and I have the phone numbers for the rentals outside of the parks so I am set there however I have never used either a wheelchair nor an ECV so any suggestions/tips on the use of either of these from anyone in a similar position would be greatly appriceated. Maybe too, some encouragement that I can actually do this and that I am not crazy to not cancel the trip.

What you might want to do is go to a large grocery or discount store near you that has "loaner" ECVs for use in the store. You can use it for a test drive. Then be aware that the off-site rentals are smaller, have only three wheels so they are more maneuverable, do not have the giant baskets in front and are faster. Also, they tend to have a single lever that if you press with your right thumb it will go forward and pressing with the left will go in reverse.

It is best to reserve it in advance. For all but Randy's, it will be waiting at your resort Bell Services when you arrive, and just drop it at Bell Services when you leave. For Randy's they will deliver it to you after arival.

There should be no problems as far as transporation, as all the buses and all except the smallest boats can handle it. It will take up very little space in the room and will fully charge in a few hours overnight.
