We are going week after next and had about the same reaction from our 8th grader's teachers. One even made a very strong argument for having the time off exused as an educational trip. I was very happy.

Yes on the "genetic commando" thing. That's how it always has been with our son as well. He's 12 now, and can't wait to spend 16 hours straight in the Magic Kingdom

Mine's going to be in 8th and we were planning to keep him out a week in September even before FD was announced. I've never done this for a week during the school year before, but when we took him out two days for a long weekend trip the teacher only asked that we get her a souvenir ;-)
