Zone Alarm firewall FYI

If you use Zone Alarm as your only firewall, or, as I do, use in in conjunction with a hardware firewall in a router (I use Netgear), ZA has an update, a major, version 5. Here is the site, just do your free upgrade. I sure do like ZA. http://download.zonelabs.com/bin/free/information/zap/releaseHistory.html Better yet, just go through your ZA icon for the update, all automatic.

We use Zone Alarm but last night my computer wiz of a son said not to download the update. He's gotten word of the update causing major problems for some of his college friends (and on-line friends). Have you already updated? Any problems?

Yes, Tori, about a week ago. Not problems at all. Nice interface, more intuitive, I like it. Looking on their site, looks like maybe some earlier hangups with McAfee AV software, but looks like maybe corrected now. http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/support/zap/generalFAQs.jsp

I have used ZA for over 2 years now, along with Ad-aware Plus (proactive rather than reactive), Mailwasher Pro, Panda AV and Norton AV. Pretty smooth sailing in spite of all the varmints out there.

That's <i>very</i> cool that it now identifies and alerts you when you antivirus is not running or out of date. Almost a reason to go out and buy a copy.

Just an FYI, DH and I downloaded the update on both of our computers, while mine was fine, it crashed DH's. I spent an evening doing a clean uninstall and a clean install of the last version BEFORE the upgrade (and checking to make sure there weren't any update files hanging around the CPU). Before you download, check to see if there has been a fix released. Doing clean installs are a pain as you have to redo all your settings. Oh and DH isn't running McAffee, there are/were interaction problems with a NUMBER of virus protection software programs.

Zone Alarm sent us an update notice and I downloaded it a few days ago. Did not do an uninstall of the old one first and everything is running just fine here.

No, I had to uninstall the latest version (ZA 5) and then reisntall the verion before that (ZA 4.whatever it was). Go on the Zone Alarm User Group and you will see that this happened to many, many, many people.
