Would You Let a 2 Year Old Have a Sparkler?

there are these kind

I've never seen that kind.

It basically burned down to the end but didn't actually light the cardboard. I think there might have been some sort of fire retardant. The cardboard ended up charred from the heat but it didn't burn. Someone linked a photo showing one that looks kind of like a bottle rocket. I think those are designed so the stick doesn't burn.

The traditional ones are supposed to be nothing but the sparkler material or fused to a metal rod. You need to drop those before it burns the hand.
This sounds like the type we used, EXCEPT, ours would burn out long before they got to the end. If the sparkler was 6" total, there was about 3" of sparkler and 3" of metal rod. We held them until they burnt themselves out, then put the 'still hot' sparkler in a bucket of water.

Honestly, I would not be as afraid of the 2 year old hurting himself as I would be him swinging that burning thing around and burning the heck out of whoever was standing next to him/her.

Kind of like the coach putting the baseball on the tee, or the guy holding the pinata...you can never get out of the way fast enough.

yes, i would and probably have. I dont remember since its been almost 5 years since I had a 2 yr old..

I would definitely NOT allow a 2 year old to play with a sparkler. I wouldn't even let me 8 or 9 year old have one. I wouldn't let them play with matches either....to me, same thing. Dangerous, fire, no.

One of my FB friends posted a picture of his 4 year old playing with one that had a solo cup over the end 'protecting' the child's hand. I wonder what was protecting the people around him? It's just a huge NO for me.

Yep, bad parents here. I'm not really sure of the exact age, but we started with us holding one with him and I know by three he was holding one. He knew and followed the rules and we were never out of reach of him. Its how we do most things: We teach safety and rules and respect not fear of fire. By eight he can light a camp fire with a striker and knows all about fire safety and firework rules and safety.

It was the 1960s when I was 2 years old. Our parents regularly let us hold sparklers. It was a big thrill for us! Yes, I got burned. No, I never let my 2 year old hold a sparkler. But they didn't get to do a lot of things I did. Not sure they are better off for it but maybe they are.

Went to a party where the parents let their 2 & 4 yr old kids light and throw firecrackers with no supervision. Then they were surprised when the 4 yr old burnt the 2 yr old!
