I chose "other". Some years ago a former co-worker was let go the Friday before his wedding that weekend. Kinds Cold.

But not surprising for that manager. Of all the bosses I've worked under in more than 4 decades in the workforce he was the single worst one.

I used to work for a bank, and every year they did layoffs in December. Really bad timing. I had a boss who was forced out due to some policy changes, she had over six months sick/vacation time accrued, and they would not pay out.

My wife was laid off when she was 5 months pregnant with our first child. The company was only going to pay the medical for the next three months. When she explained that would leave her with no insurance for the birth of our baby and who is going to hire a woman 7,8,9 months pregnant? The head of HR changed it to cover the next 7 months instead of 3.

Well, just found out today that I am joining the ranks of the unemployed. Found out a week before Christmas, and the last day of work is January 31, so I covered two of the bases. At least my holiday shopping is done and paid for . . . No good time to get the news.
Sorry to hear that. DH lost his job in early November. He finally received his first unemployment payment Monday for the equivalent of 3 weeks. Unemployment in Florida wouldn't even make a dent in most people's bills, but it's something.

Depends on the situation I guess. I've been let go before where I only got health insurance until the end of the calendar month. If I wanted to stay on the same (employer funded) plan, I'd have to pay COBRA, which was pretty pricey. Self-funded employer health plans tend to charge a small fortune for COBRA premiums.

I was laid off (ours was our only health insurance) when my wife was pregnant. I had 60 days notice though and my employer was very lenient when it came to me looking for a job. I think in that case we got one month at company expense (including my normal contribution waived) but after that we had to pay for COBRA. It got even more interesting when my company merged with another company and I had to get COBRA through their available plans.
