Worried about smoke...

I'm another one whom cig smoke makes extremely ill - its always one of my biggest worries on vacation. I will say that Disney has definitely gotten better in the non-smoking department.

On our first DCL cruise, in 1998, smoking was seemingly everywhere - including areas where it wasn't supposed to be.

Last year (our 4th DCL cruise) was the first time I could attend the evening dance parties in Rockin' Bar D because it was now non-smoking. I felt like Cinderella finally getting to go to the ball! I was so happy I was almost in tears - really.

As far as up on deck - choose a deck chair in the Quiet Cove section as far forward as possible and you should be okay. I'm pretty darned sensitive, and have asked people to switch chairs with me so that I'm always well upwind, but I have been able to enjoy the Quiet Cove pool.

The only place I haven't been able to hang out are the comy chairs on Deck 4. Seems like a smoker always turns up upwind of where I settle.

My husband smokes. Not a lot but too much for me, any smoking is too much for me. He only smokes outside and in the designated areas. He is really very good about this.
Now my worries, are we going to have issues with my neighbors or co-cruisers if his smoke goes in their face while my husband is on our verandah?

Well, I mostly blame Disney for the problem. After all, if they made one side of the ship fully non-smoking and only allowed smoking on verandahs of the other side, then we could both be happier. (Or, front NS, back S, etc.)

However, if I were to end up in a stateroom next to you and your husband made my breathing stop, I would be really angry with both of you for ruining my vacation.

I appreciate it when people are willing to pay attention to staying in the designated areas. However, if all of the deck space is designated for smoking it means that many of us can't enjoy our vacation. Plus, we may get annoyed with your husband for something that isn't really his fault.

Perhaps, as a smoker, your husband (or you on his behalf) could also make a request to Disney that they do a better job of designating separated smoking and non-smoking areas and rooms. I think that Disney gets most of their requests from non-smokers (and people with medical issues). If smokers, like your husband, identify their willingness to remain in designated areas, and smoke only on designated verandahs, it might end up making both our vacations better.

OK I have bit my tongue several times on this board with respect to this issue but I'm disturbed that people like your DH, whom you describe as a considerate smoker, should be worried about such things when really you and he should be looking forward to your cruise. The bottom line is that Disney allows your DH to smoke on your verandah so neither he nor you should be concerned about or feel guilty about doing so. I fully intend to disregard people who say that my occasional smoking on my verandah (that DCL allows me to smoke on) will "ruin" their vacation. So long as your DH sticks to the designated smoking areas, including your verandah, anyone who has a problem with it can and should take it up with DCL. On my last cruise (not DCL) I chose a verandah on the smoking side of the ship. Since that doesn't exist on DCL I chose the side of the ship that I prefer. I have no intention of chain smoking on my verandah (who has time for that) but I will be smoking :smokin: on my verandah and in other designated areas and anyone who dares to tell me that I am either 1) ruining their vacation or 2) annoying them, should be fully prepared to hear my not so courteous retort.

Slowly but surely, smoking is being prohibited in more and more areas. As this happens, I abide by the new policies/laws. But so long as smoking is permissible, I have a problem with people who think that it is ok to be "angry" at or "annoyed" with people who are merely abiding by the current policy. Everybody knows what the DCL policy is. Anybody who doesn't like it can choose not to cruise DCL, select a stateroom without a verandah, or not use their verandah if they are so "annoyed". After all, the day will likely come when most places will be non-smoking and smokers will have to make a choice to cruise or not to cruise.

Now please stop worrying and enjoy the anticipation of your upcoming cruise. :cool1:

Yes that is how other cruise lines do it. One side of the ship smoking, the other side of the ship non-smoking. That way you can go out on your verandah on the non-smoking side, and not have anyone on the verandah next to you smoking.

we were on the Wonder 2 years ago and I did have a problem with smoke in the adult clubs. Perhaps they've changed the smoking rules since then, but it was a major problem for me in the club where they play rock and roll music (where they have the 60's and 70's parties). While they did have a no-smoking area, it's such a small room, the smoke bleeds from the smoking side. So we ended up giving up on that club. Not fair in my opinion, that i should have one of the venues removed from any possibility of enjoyment due to smoke.

We also had a problem during the sailaway parties. We kept having to move to get away from smokers (we would be in an area, and a smoker would light up, forcing us to move).

Instead of everyone worrying so much, how about we all be adults. If smoking is truly that big of a problem for you, simply say to the person who lights up, "Excuse me. I am sorry, but smoking causes terrible breathing problems for me. Would you mind not smoking next to me/on the verandah next to mine while I'm out here/etc." If you were in the area first, fine. If you came later, expect to move.

I'm not a big fan of smoking either (asthmatic) so I understand the issue. Just speak up, politely! My dh smokes cigars occasionally. Because of this, we choose a verandah cabin as far aft as possible. If one of our neighbors - NICELY - requested that he not smoke, he won't. Just be respectful of people and they will generally do the same for you (and if they don't, mutter this under your breath - "four flats, no spare - hemroids and hairloss").

Have a great cruise!!!

Can not stand the smell of cigarette, but we do live in America. I smoke a cigar about once every two months. Never around my kids and I keep all of my cigars away from them and I educate them about he dangers of smoking. I do not feel guilty about smoking nor do I feel guilty about the people who are aound me when I smoke. DW can not stand the smell of it and I tell her when I am going to smoke and she can decide if she would like to go with me or not. Nor does she complain about smokers. Before the government pretty much outlawed being able to smoke anywhere but your car, your home, or next to the smelly dumpster around back. When I went out to eat I would ask for a seat far from the smoking section (especially with my daughters) and I would tell the host that I would be willing to wait for that table. I know several smokers and everyone of them take great care not to bother others. I never once smelled cigarette smoke on the ship even in the smoking areas which I spent on lovely afternoon. 99% of the time there is a pretty good breeze blowing, so unless you are standing right next to some who is smoking, or hanging out in the club (which until last year in my state you could not do anyway) I would bet that you will be fine and not even know people are or are not smoking.
And as for that fire on the cruise ship careless people are more than just smokers. I pass several people a day on my way to work or pick up my girls from school that are talking on there cells or look at the radio or reading a report or the paper while driving. LOOK out for those people they are careless. You have more of a chance of getting in to an accident with one of them than getting in a fire aboard a Disney cruise ship there are smoke decters in both the rooms that I have been in. To worry about that is a waist of enegry and time. There are much more important things to be worrying about!! I would much rather spend my time enjoying there latest art work playing a game with them. I am sorry that a person died but it was not from the fire. If it is you time there is nothing you can do about it. Worrying makes the best times seem bad.
Enjoy life don't be afraid to live it.
After rereading this it might come off as a little harsh. I am sorry about that but I am a firm believer in not pushing my beliefs on other people. You want to smoke cigarettes good for you. I don’t want to smell it. If I want to have a cigar good for me I WILL stay in the area that is for smoking and I will try and not blow smoke or have any of my smoke blown in to a place that is for nonsmokers. Non smokers and smokers have the same rights to enjoy the Ship and the cruise.

I agree with you 150% I have a very pleasent person come up to me in Disney World when I was out smoking and ask me to stop I thanked them for there politeness and moved to another location where I wasn't bothering anyone. Politness is the key.

I'm going to assume that this person did not express their anger at you for ruining their vacation or indicate that they were otherwise annoyed with you. That does make quite a difference IMHO.

A question to the OP. What type of medical condition do you have that will cause you to stop breathing if you are on deck and someone else on deck is smoking? Is this something that requires you to wear a medical alert of some kind in case you are walking from anywhere to anywhere and a smoker is walking nearby?

The one place I wish I saw more enforcement of smoking was in the hot tub. One night a couple of guys were smoking big, smelly cigars while sitting IN the hot tub. When I inquired DCL if this was officially allowed, I was told no. Hopefully they do a better job now of controlling this (who wants to sit in a tub with someone's ashes? yuck!)

That was my point exctly. A little kindness goes a long way. Treat people with respecet ant chances are that is what you will get back. And if you have a medical condition well YOU need to be aware of what is going on around you. I am deathly alegeric (ahh been awake for 27 hours doing inventory) to mushrooms. I carry two eppy pens with me at all times. and have had my stomich pumped more than once. I know I will die if I eat them so I pay attention to what is going in my mouth. and I make it well known when I go out to eat again with a little kindness. Only once in my life did I have to get up set with any waitress, and was an extream case. I think she was trying to get fired or it was her last night working there because she just didn't care.

To repeat an earlier question, what medical condition causes someone to stop breathing if they are anywhere near cigarette smoke? I mean if you aren't breathing, you die. How would this be managed given that at any time a person with a cigarette could walk by or drive by? If the OP exaggerated to make a point, ok, we all do it (I ate a million pieces of candy) but if not?

My guess would be asthma, since it's physically impossible to be allergic to cigarette smoke.

Could be. I went back and reread some of it and later the poster refers to he and his spouse getting sick from smoke, her from migraines. Evidently he was using the phrase to stop breathing more as a point than an actual fact. I've never heard of a migraine reaction so I'm wondering if their sensitivity to smoke is intensified by getting upset by the situation.

I also get terrible headaches when being in a smokey area. Seems funny when I smoked in highschool did not bother me one bit :cool1: But not being dramatic or anything now being a non smoker for 11 years cigarette smoke really can make others lightheaded, headaches and nauseaus. So I can see why other smokers can be critical in not beleiving when some one says they get sick, you don't really get sick unless you are a non smoker.

I am sorry that my point seems to have been so badly misunderstood.

I did not say that I was going to be impolite to someone at all. I indicated that I would leave the area without any confrontation at all. I simply said that I would be angry. I am entitled to my own feelings.

Whenever I have spoken to someone about their smoking, I have been polite about it. Unfortunately, I have rarely been lucky enough to encounter those of you who respond similarly. The one person I asked (very politely) if he realized that he was in a non-smoking area on my last trip to Disney told me that he didn't care and to F*** off. I really appreciate hearing that some of you will switch chairs to be downwind, etc. I will try asking.

I'm sorry that I was unable to make my points clearly.

However, I have requested an interior cabin, my only previous cruise was on a non-smoking cruise ship (unfortunately no longer available), and I'm planning on the 3-day cruise instead of a longer one in case I end up in my stateroom next to an air purifier for the whole trip. I was asking for advice so that I can be prepared and get the most out of my vacation.

Yes, I'm asthmatic. Yes, I am also allergic to nicotine. (Consider this as similar to the person with a corn allergy who passes out because someone makes microwave popcorn in their office.)

I know that Carnival had a ship which cruised the Caribbean and was totally smoke free, however, they no longer have any ships which cruise smoke free. They allow smoking in designated areas now like most ships.

I don't believe any of the major cruise lines have smoke-free cruises at this point. Disney is probably the next best thing ... family oriented, less drinkers, less smokers, no gambling, etc.

However, it seems to me that if I couldn't swim, I wouldn't take a scuba, snorkel vacation ... If I was alergic to the sun, I wouldnt' take a vacation on Miami's South Beach ... If I was in a wheel chair I wouldn't take a mountain climing adventure. Trying not to sound too harsh here :smokin: ... but I would recommend you try a different vacation alternative it the smoking is that life threatening.

I mean, come on, you are much, much more likely to encounter a smoker simply walking down the street than you are on DCL. Avoid the designated smoking areas ... 99% of smokers are actually 'real people' who are curtious to others and smoke strictly in the smoking areas. You will always encounter the 1% anywhere you go ... yup, even on DCL.

There are many smoke free vacations that you can try if a chance encounter with a passing smoker is life threatening. Google it ... "smoke free vacation", "smoke free resorts" ... etc. Why even put yourself in a situation where your life is in danger?

Maybe it's exciting ... like base jumping or sky diving, or cave diving ... dangerous and 'exciting' stuff, but havn't signed myself or my family up for a cave diving excursion.

MSWint, I starting to think some of the things that you were saying but now I'm thinking that this may be one of those posts that is fabricated and is intended only to start a big debate. If you read the latest post carefully it talks about never being fortunate enough to speak with a polite smoker and then goes on to state that he will pass out, having to spend days sitting next to an air purifier if in any proximity to a cigarette. These two thoughts contradict each other. He would have hit the bricks before the smoker told him to (blank) off.
