Workouts While At Disney

I didn't know where to post this question, but thought this might be the best place.

At home I am used to going to the gym 5-6 days per week, with a mix of weight training and cardio (usually 20+ miles per visit on a recumbent bike). On my WDW trips I tend to cut back on cardio, figuring I'll get it while touring the parks, and continue on with my weight training as normal.

I'm wondering how some of you adjust what you do for your cardio while at WDW. Do you cut back on running, biking, etc. or do you continue at the same levels that you normally would at home?

Thanks!

I may cut back on the weight work but will pick up one or two while a the resort. Usually do not cu out cardio but will swicth it up to runs specifically. On occation will plug into an elliptical but frankly just love running in and around the resorts

I cut back a little but try to get in a morning run or two. I try to get in at least one at the Boardwalk area because I love that run. I also try to get over to Port Orleans, even if I am not staying there, to run on the path along the river.

If I am staying at a resort with a gym I'll hit that a couple of times too. The Dolphin and CSR are the two with fitness centers that I've tried.

If I am down there for a run (W&D or marathon weekend) I am usually past the point of my last run and just do the event.

Hiya,
I bring a resistance band with me and use my own body weight for weight training while I'm down there. Depending on how long I am down there, I usally just do 1 or 2 cardio sessions so my knee gets a break with all the walking.

Thank you. You really got me to thinking...maybe I'll head over to the Polynesian one morning to run when I go to WDW in a couple of weeks!

Thank you, the run around the lake at the Boardwalk is great...very peaceful! Port Orleans sounds like it would be very nice as well. I'm a big fan of the CSR gym, it's my moderate resort of choice because of the gym. My favorite of all the gyms is Saratoga Springs, it's very large and has terrific equipment. I can do everything there that I do at my gym at home.

Agreed with the Crescent Lake (BWalk) Studios Loop early in the morning as No.1 I also like the OKW/DTD loop along the nature trail...though too early and you could be gold cart fodder. Finally, a great long run picks up GF, Poly and Fort Widerness.

I have actually started to do a lot of work with the TRX system. It's portable and fires lots of muscle since it is all body weight as well as slightly instable.

Thank you, I like the idea of bringing a resistance band a lot!

I make sure not to cut back on any of my routine because I am eating much more calories and sodium than I typically do. So when choosing a resort on vacation, the gym is a very important part of consideration. Going on about ten years of my fitness habit and I have found this is the best way for me to keep at it all the time....plus it makes for a more enjoyable trip if I got my workouts in as usual.

I just did a 10.5 mile on my last day there last week (marathon training). I ran back and forth between the Poly and GF 5 times. I started around 6am and it was beautiful and peaceful. The castle was lit, all the lights around the GH and Contemporary. I did however cut out my shorter midweek runs. I just did not have the time.

I like to mix it up while i'm at WDW. I try running about 2 miles to a pool, then swim for about 15 mins and then run back to room. The swim is a nice change since i don't do that much at home. The pools are so nice and clean its great. Do it early before it gets crowded.

running through the campgrounds over to the Wilderness Lodge and back through the fort is an easy way to get a lot of miles in, without seeing the same thing over and over again.

And there's many runners that take a run around the Magic Kingdom, even though there is no sidewalk. And the road is also considered a shared road with bikers.

You can still rent a bike at Wilderness Lodge and Ft Wilderness for a small fee per day. I'd have to say that those two are probably the best resorts for getting in exercise on a daily basis, and WL does have a gym.

I love running the Port Orleans trails. Around the lake at the Boardwalk/Beach Club area would be awesome. Also Fort Wilderness/Wilderness Lodge that area you can get quite a bit of running in. I would recommend avoiding running on actual disney roads, at least the ones near DTD and Port Orleans. I ran on them around marathon weekend and it wasnt the safest.

early in the morning on the cast road behind the MK isn't too bad. Plus it's only a two lane road, so there's not too much traffic to contend with or other tourist that have no idea where they're going.
I'm not saying cast members are great drivers, however they should see runners more often on that road than tourist who are lost driving in circles around property. It's not an unexpected scene.

I generally don't send folks that way through forums but have in a PM or E-mail recommendation. The road is not bad and has a great bail out area for last minute dives. I think I would rather send folks through Fort Wilderness and other locations unless they are extremely familiar with the lay of the land. For me its a safety/responsiblity issue (but then that is a large function of my real job, also).
