Wk of Nov 26--WISH Walking/Running Club

OK, DH just IM'ed me that he wants to try the DW Tri in another year. So I responded back to him and reminded him that he told me that he would NEVER EVER run. All of sudden the man has medal/bling envy and wants to run with me. Well blow me over. Now I won't have a babysitter for the kids. And I won't have a cheerleader anymore. I don't know how this will work!!!

Super quick drive-by.... Checked my mail today and my Magical Express stuff was in there! Holy smoke! We're getting so CLOSE!!!!!!!!

Mine too!! :sunny:

OK, you all are cracking me up today!! :rotfl:

Yes, I love spicey V8, :drinking1
Yes, I "add color" to my hair, :teeth:
Yes, DH has a few stray hairs in his ears! :rolleyes1

Enough confessions for today!

Colleen

I have never drunk spicy V-8, but I have used it in recipes.
I have been adding color to my hair for about 2 years and detest the whole process.
I have not noticed any pesky nose or ear hairs in DH, but he does now have exactly 5 grey hairs at his temple.

Now for the boring administrative stuff:

After the 2006 races, we converted the thread name from WISH marathon team to the WISH walking/running club in an effort to make everyone feel welcome, not just folks who were training for an event. I haven't really noticed that we've had anyone join us this year who was not training for some kind of event. My question...should we change the name of the threads to better reflect what we are? I was thinking of titling the threads as we did last year...WISH Half/Full Marathon Team.

Also, check out the opening post in the thread. If most of you are like me, after the first time, you never read the opening post anymore. I made some changes to try to make us less specific to the 2007 races and more generic all the way around. I'd still like it to reflect that anyone and everyone are welcome, whether casual walker/runner or hardcore triathlete. I'd appreciate some feedback and/or suggestions.

Second question...mostly for the folks that have joined us this year. How did you find us? What's the best way for someone who's interested in doing the WDW half/full/Goofy to find us?

Third question...I don't get out much, even here on the DIS. Anyone know if there are other teams out there on the DIS that are training for the marathons? I'm not looking to merge, but thought it would be cool to at least be able to recognize any other DIS groups that might be out there.

Last question...should I thin out the WISH team list on the opening page? I know there are folks on there who haven't posted in eons and we'll probably never see again. But I have been reluctant to delete any names in case those people are actually still with us, but just don't post.

TIA!

I like what we have. It covers those training for events and the casual runners/walkers.

I think the opening paragraph is fine.

Someone posted about running the marathon and was directed here. I clicked on the link and found you guys. I then stole the Donald 07 graphic (actually I stole it and then asked if I could use it). Soon after, Lily invited me to participate, and now you're stuck with me.

I haven't seen any other groups training for the marathons.

Keep the list until after the marathons.

mel - I don't post much but lurk often. I am not currently doing much of anything. My arm came out of the sling on the Friday after Thanksgiving. I am still restricted as to what I can do. The sling is to be worn anytime I think I may don something I'm not supposed. I can't lift, push, pull or reach with the right arm. The PT hopes to have full assisted range of motion back in the arm by Friday. For as much as it hurts, he needs to back off. I am not allowed to attempt any strengthening of the shoulder until after seeing the surgeon again on Jan 10.

My foot has never recovered from whatever happended to it during last years race. I am going to an occupational therapist that my surgeon's husband, who specializes in feet and ankles, sends his troublesome patients to. The OT actually had additional movement in my foot and ankle after just one visit. Hopefully in January I can get back to exercising and join in on the thread again. Lynne plans on doing the Minnie again and I hope to be able to do it also.

Everyone is doing great with their training. I have been tagging along with Lynne on weekends and walking 3-5 miles while she does her workout. I would consider myself a casual walker currently since I only do it on weekends.

I wish I could be racing with all of you this January but I need to get this old body healed. I will be there to cheer everyone on.

Have a great training weekend.

I even drove around and found a bunch of blocks in a newer subdivision that haven't been paved yet so they're still that reddish brown clay lookin stuff which I figured would be much easier on the shins. If anything, it was harder, which was strange. Sections that were on pavement would actually feel better, even though it was a harder surface. Basically didn't have any fun. Wasn't tired, it just hurt.

Dry clay is like concrete, just try digging it up with a shovel. I have tried this in the past and the only way to do it is with a backhoe. Wet clay is extremely slick, almost as bad as ice but when you fall you can never get it out of your cloths (experience with this as well). I try to avoid clay whenever possible because I am likely to not enjoy the experience. Hope you can find a place that has nice topsoil that you can run on.

I don't care what it is called as long as it isn't bad. :teeth: The first paragraph seems fine with me but I am a lowly engineer who hates writing anything and will just about agree with most things as long as I don't have to redo it myself. :lmao:

I have no clue as to how I first came here since that was over two years ago. I will guess that Lynnda had something to do with it but my old age is catching up to me. ;)

There are other people training but I haven't seen any "teams' to speak of. Most questions I have seen tend to get referred over to here but I usually don't see those people post.

Having been a lurker for a while, I don't know if we should thin the ranks but you might try splitting the list between those you know are doing something and those who you haven't heard from for a while. Then make an announcement to check the list and either post or PM to get your name moved if necessary. Then if they don't answer for a while you can probably take them off without worrying if they are still reading. Although this is probably too time consuming and since there is enough other things going on now, it probably isn't the most efficient way to do things (although since I am not doing it, I am great about volunteering all sorts of stuff for people to do :teeth: ).

Bill, I didn't know you were an engineer. I am, too. Although, by the way you worked out the logistics of the overall name list above, I should have figured "engineer." No one else but engineers would put that much thought into that process, right? :teeth:

I joined this year. I just kind of stumbled on to this Board after my best friend told me she was entering the 2006 half-marathon.

As for suggestions....it might be nice to mention this thread every now and then on the Community Board...if we are allowed to do so. :confused3

It sure is wild around here! We are going to have so much fun marathon weekend, I can't wait!!

I just ran 4 miles in 41:42 and I'm very happy to say that I had a pretty good run. My quad hurt the first couple of minutes and I told myself that if I was still in pain after a mile, than I will quit. I didn't have to quit. :) It was weird, the longer and further I ran, the less my quad hurt. I was planning on icing it after I ran, but it doesn't hurt at all; my leg has been hurting since last Thursday and I have zero pain in it right now. Weird!! I'm still going to ice it before I go to bed though, there's no sense in borrowing trouble.

Mel--I like the way the thread is now. :thumbsup2

Matt--If you think your shin splints are caused by too many miles too fast, then maybe you should slow your pace down a bit. With this being your first full marathon, you get an automatic PR no matter what your time is. You'll be much better off in the long run to finish 10 or 20 minutes slower than your anticipated time and be healthy than if you run a 4:30 marathon and not be able to walk after the race or even worse do long lasting or permanent damage to your legs.

Kathy--Nice to "see" you again! I'm sorry that you won't be able to do the marathon, but I'll be very glad to see you on the scream team. How is Erin doing? Is she in Disney for the CP or is she back home now?

Carrie--How was your run?

Another quick delurk-

Ummm, what's wrong w/ making sure the car matches the bike? The most important priority for a car is the ability to transport a bike. Of course the replacement cost on my bikes at any given time tends to be higher than the blue book on my car...

Hyponatremia 101- For you engineer types, the body works by way of electrical potentials across cell membranes that function kind of like those salt water batteries you made in chemistry class. The important positive electrolytes are sodium and potassium and chloride is the most important negative electrolyte. So basically salt(NaCl) and particularly the sodium is very important to all body processes. The body generally does a very good job regulating it's quantities but...
hyponatremia is the overdilution of the salts in your body. Barring a pathological process such as cancerous production of certain hormones, it happens by ingesting too much fluids and not enough electrolytes. It is really an act of overdrinking, particularly plain water. Hence the importance of gatorade/powerade etc in long events. In addition, salt is better absorbed through the intestine when paired with some glucose. What seems to have happened in some people is that they kept pounding the water past the point of need over-riding the bodies' signals and diluted their body fluids. This unfortunately can lead to BAD effects with fluid in the brain and people die from hyponatremia. Unfortunately the process behind the development of hyponatremia isn't fully understood and there seems to be more to it than just over-drinking of particularly plain water. There has been an association w/ NSAID use and that is why Tylenol is given out at the bigger races since its mechanism of action is different. There has also been an association with lower levels of training for the event and slower finish times.

So what to do to protect yourself? Develop a taste for one of the electrolyte drinks, don't consume massive quantities of fluid just because you think you should(16-24 oz/hr tends to be the recommendation), and unfortunately probably try and avoid NSAID pain killers on race day. Realistically, people take NSAIDs before and during races all the time so...

This public service message brought to you by the American Medical Athletic Association and their 2005 pre-Marine Corps Marathon CME meeting. My type of CME- get education credits for travelling to races. The weeklong meeting before Ironman Hawaii is on the to do list :thumbsup2

Hi Mel!! My advice is to leave the big ole list. I am pretty sure we have some lurkers (yeah...I know a few) who are planning to run but don't post regularly! So I'd leave all names as listed :teeth: .

Krista: :grouphug: Soooo glad to hear your quad is feeling so much better. WTG!! And GREAT run btw!!!

Carrie: I'm glad your injury didn't scream at ya' too much!!! I hope it continues to feel ok!!! PD for that recovery!

Well...as for my quad/hip deal...no better really. I won't know a whole lot until I see the doc but I'm making my own diagnosis ;) .... iliopsoas tendonitis. As I seem to have a tendancy toward tendonitis lol....I believe this is the cause of all my groin and quad pain. It makes the most sense...so I'm going to the doc on Monday armed with this info and see exactly WHAT they can do to get me out there running again. Three full days off and I'm about going mental. I guess I never realized just how addicted I've become to those endorphins. Goodness....PLEASE get me back out there for the love of my sanity ;).

Since running is excrutiating right now...but walking is bearable...I'm considering doing a 12 mile walk in place of my 18 mile run on Saturday. Anyone want to offer their advice on this? I know that a 12 mile walk (prob at about a 15 mpm pace) will be taxing but not as hard on the joints as running. But certainly I will feel like I've put my steps in and got a solid workout. So I'd love to hear what you experts think. If it hurts...I won't even attempt it of course...but if it's manageable I think it's a really good alternative. Please advise!!!

Lynn- I missed the whole car matching the bike thing and i even went back and read more thoroughly. :confused3 Anyway, the puss (pink of course) does not match the subaru, but it sure makes it look better when it is on top!! Last week (for the 1st time in 3 years of loading bikes on top of my car) I dropped the bronc (cannondale jekyll). It slid down on the drive train side and scratch my car in the process. I came in the house all upset telling phil what had happened. I was telling him all about how i dropped my bike and bent the derailler hanger on my bike and i almost scratched the paint on my (you guessed it) bike!!!! Hey - what can i say, i dont race w/ my car!! :goodvibes Speaking of bikes, I was thinking of getting phil a 29er frame for his b'day!! I looked at the voodoo b/c it looks pretty reasonably priced, it can built up as a single speed or geared and it is the lighter in the price range. It is chro mo??? Any experience w/ these? I know you are a roadie these days, but i also know you must be pretty good in the dirt!!

I'm really bummed about the closings mentioned!! I didn't know i like roller coasters until i rode space mt. in dl this month!

As far as grey... I have a TON!!!!! I dont color yet, and i probably won't for several more years for the sole purpose of irritating my mother (don't tell her, she is coming to w/ us to watch the boy while we run!!)

Unwanted hair.... I might have a wisker on my chin, but phil has a laser at work :smooth:

Vic-I'm forming an interesting mental picture of you now!! Can't wait to see you in Jan!!

Nancy - did you mention the acceleraid? I drink it exclusively during summer training and in adventure races. I did get a little sick of it during my long trail run (it makes my teeth feel hairy after a long period of time)

Hey..Hairy teeth ( i get those when i use the gels and aceleraid!!) Nobody mentioned hairy teeth yet! :teeth:

MelR- I went back looking too and it must have been last week when people were talking about obsessive bike buying. Hey, it's all about priorities. About a 29er- yes, Phil is tall enough he would probably enjoy one. Test rode a Gary Fisher a few years back but I'm slightly vertically challenged and I didn't like how it handled for me. Have you considered a Surly? They make some sweet 29ers and SS bikes. Ack, look what you've done- I delurked 3 times today.

lynn - What's w/ the delurking? I like it!!!! Are you on an less time consuming rotation?? I looked at the surly. I have a surly fork on the puss. The rest of the puss is aluminum but the fork is good ol' steel. The voodoo is significantly lighter (by that i mean about 1/2 pound!) than the surly and i really like the style of the tensioner that comes w/ the frame. Phil wanted to go more w/ gears (sissy!!) than the ss. Although i have to admit, for a single speed, surly makes the coolest tensioner. I have one on the puss (it comes equiped, as much of their stuff does) w/ a bottle opener. And i've actually used it :drinking1

Good Morning TEAM: :surfweb:

Wow, thanks for the laughs yesterday. You all were on a roll. OK, I'm having a good training week this week. I did 40 solid minutes on the treadmill yesterday at 6.0 mph (10 mpm) for 4.0 miles. My legs felt pretty good, just some normal soreness of my shins and hip flexors but nothing major. I've started stretching more before running and continue stretching after. I think stretching more before is helping. This morning I'm SWOGGING for 40 min when the pool opens at 6:45a.

Mel/Chimera- I wanted to add my thoughts to your questions.

As far as the name: I like WISH walking/running club; it's nice and inclusive, and we have our WISH Racing Team uniforms when we run races. I'd leave it.

I just re-read the opening paragraph, you're right I pretty much skip over it when I open the thread. I think it sounds good. I can't think of anything to add or subtract.

Second question: Lily directed me here. I found the DIS when I was planning a trip to Disney Labor Day weekend 05, and then after Labor Day I was still surfing around and looked at the WISH thread once at the end of January. I posted a random thread saying I wanted to start exercising again and Lily directed me over to this team. I've been here ever since, and you all have kept me going now for 10 months. So I got here by Lily replying to my thread and directing me over here.

Third question: I don't get out much on the DIS anymore either. I don't know if there are any other groups training for the marathon. In fact, I usually get to this thread by clicking on user CP and seeing who replied. If someone starts another thread on the events/competition board, I usually miss that too.

Last question: I don't think I'd thin out the team. I looked and I recognize most of the people as posting at one time or another.

Just my thoughts.

Oh one other thing I wanted to mention, I discovered I still have a few pairs of WISH socks around (because we had to order a minimum number). Does anyone out there need replacements, or anyone that missed the order the first time want a pair? They are only the s/m size, and they are $6.00 a pair + any PayPal fees and shipping. Send me a PM if you are interested.

Morning all! :sunny:
Training has been going well this week. 3 on Monday, 4 on Tues., Rest Wed., and then 8 today (if I can get my rear in gear). I'm supposed to be doing the Jingle Bell 5K on Sat., but it's supposed to be COLD (mid-30s in AR) So, I'm not sure.

Marathon weekend is just over a month away for all you runners/walkers this year! I'm living vicariously through all of you! Keep up the training, won't be long now--and I'll be there next year!

MelR--hope you don't get too bad weather today!

Signing off!

Stephanie

Ok, I just popped in for a second to check the thread, and now I have to explain to my co-worker friend who was reading over my shoulder why I'm hanging out with a bunch of people talking about gray nose hairs and worrying about looking like lime green water balloons. :sad2: :lmao:

:lmao: :lmao: :lmao: I so needed that laugh! Thank you!

Mel--

My thoughts:

--- I really like the new first paragraph in the first post. I think that about covers it. :thumbsup2

--- I haven't seen other training groups on the DIS. I will admit to lurking on a lot of other forums, though.

-- I keep going around and around about the member list. If it's used as a reference as to who everyone is, then you want as many people on there as you can, BUT you don't want it so long that it's unusable. It's a pickle. I would say leave it for now, then when we transition into '08 consider trimming it back to those folks who you remember posting in, lets say the past six months or so.

--- I'm going out on a limb here, but I kind of like the idea of changing the name back. We are on the Events/Competition subforum, so we really don't see any fitness walkers or joggers here and I think it more accurately reflects what we are about. If you do decide to make the switch back, I may make mention in the first post that all "prospective" half/full marathoners are welcome, as well as those training for other distance events.

Just my .02--
Kevin :earsboy:
