Wk of Nov 26--WISH Walking/Running Club

Good evening everyone!

To all of those nursing injuries - I hope you get to feeling better soon.

To all of those getting your training runs in - Keep up the great work.

Kim - Welcome!

Cam - Good thoughts enroute for you and Howard.

Four slow miles tonight on the TM. Ankle feels good. It's still a little swollen, but no pain, and that's a good thing. Thursday is a scheduled eight miler. We'll seee how it goes.

:)

Hi everyone!

Judy - :grouphug: I wish you all the best. Sending you some virtual :wizard: to help you. :grouphug:

:welcome: Kim and fabumouse! Kim, I think it's wise for you to try to lose some weight before training. I didn't and I'm kinda paying for it. :sad2: I'm one of those beginners who thought I could just jump right in there and start training without seriously getting in shape first. I did start my cross-training in August but I think your plan of starting now is much better. :thumbsup2

Christa - your pace is awesome! Wow!

Sunny - can you come decorate my house? :teeth: Great pics!
By the way, if your Dr. Dumb-dumb took a look at me now and knew I was training for a half, he would probably faint. Luckily, I haven't had anyone tell me I can't do this....but my body/mind have been trying to tell me this during my long runs. I try not to listen to their whining. :teeth:

Cam – sending good thoughts for Howard and his trying to get through finals.

Wendy - sending good thoughts for you and your dad!

For all of you sporting injuries, sending :wizard: :wizard: :wizard: to help you get better soon! :grouphug:

By the way, I love all of these tips for preparing for a long run and what to dring/eat afterwards.....V8 juice, slim-fast. Is there a thread for tips already? I need all the help I can get.

Last Saturday, my long run was 4 miles, W3/R2. I was used to W3/R1 so this extra minute of running was really, really hard for me for some reason even though this is what I do for my short runs. :confused3 However, my pace times ended up being a personal best:

Mile 1: 14:03
Mile 2: 14:12
Mile 3: 14:36
Mile 4: 14:06

I'm really nervous about doing the 8 miles this next Saturday. I really have to psyche myself up for these runs. As for the weather, the high is supposed to be 45 degrees after a low of ~25 that morning. For you Northerners, this would probably be fairly warm. :teeth: Last Sat. was ~70 degrees. Quite a drop!

Take care, everyone. I'll keep my fingers crossed for a injury-free week for you!

If you think you can, you can!

Steve - We have had very warm weather. In the 60's. I have been able to mt. bike a ton. It is warmer than road biking. I am not planning any road rides any time soon. Our weather is supposed to drop into the teens by thurs so the sat. ride may not happen. I cannot take the trainer!!!!!!!!

Krista - Last year while training for the Goofy, I strained my quad. I couldn't run from Oct. until race weekend. The only time it hurt was when I ran. So I did most of my cardio workouts on the elliptical machine and exercise bikes. It worked well enough to get me through both races, although my pace was/is no where near as fast as yours.

Howard - hang in there. I was underprepared last year (and will probably be this year, too). But your pace is much faster than mine and I'm sure your fitness level is better than mine, too. So even if you have to go at a much slower pace, the important thing is to finish!

Judy - bummer about the knee. Hope it holds up for you. I tore my meniscus about 16 years ago. They couldn't repair it, so just took it out. So far the knee is holding up very well.

As far as my goals for the Goofy - I'd like to break 3 hours for the half. For the full, although I'd like to finish in 6 1/2 hours or less, the only real goal is to finish in the required time of 7 hours. Last year I was 8 minutes over. I got the Goofy medal, but no full or Goofy certificate since I wasn't considered an official finisher :sad2:

Terri

Cam - or anyone for that matter -

Just curious, I hope I'm not out of line here. I noticed from your packing list that you plan on taking 2 Aleve before the marathon. Is this for medical purposes? The reason I'm asking is because I read that you shouldn't take Aleve or Ibuprofen within so many hours before or after the race....something about causing electrolytes in your body to become unbalanced or something like that. When I first started training, I took some Aleve to help ease the pain/stiffness/soreness in my legs...and it helped....but then I read that you shouldn't. :confused3
Does anyone else take Aleve or Ibuprofen before or after?

Susie - I do. I'll take what i can get to not have pain!!! I have never noticed any trouble w/ it.

There is some relation between NSAIDs and hyponatremia. Hence the blanket= don't do this recommendation. Tylenol type products are generally acknowledged to be safer in this regards. However, hyponatremia is a lot more complicated than just taking an Advil. Have to go see pts now but if anyone is interested in learning more, just let me know and I'll post more tonight.

Morning all!!!

Quick post here....

Yesterday I had a great training run..... 6.04 miles in 55:00; or 9:06/mile. And it felt GREAT. I think part of that had to do with my pacing, which I backed off a bit to great result, and the weather, certainly to be the last 60 degree day until I get to Florida.

During my run, I got to thinking about just how close we are and how many things I have yet to accomplish!!! I need to buy more GU and Sportbeans, I need to figure out my race day wardrobe, I need to send my parents their Christmas gift, I need to order my park passes..........

Off-topic--- but does anyone else feel like we're getting the shaft at the parks this year---- No Splash Mountain, No El Rio del Tiempo and now no Rock N' Roller Coaster. Boo. :guilty:

Have a great day all!

WHAT??? Are they closed for refurbishment? :confused3 What are they doing?

Well, off my 18 miles this morning. Feeling tired and unmotivated after yesterday's 9 miles is not helping. We will see how it goes. Going to do a 10 run 1 walk today.

Colleen

No Splash Mountain???? I hadn't seen tha tone yet. :guilty:

Well, I actually got a full 40 minutes in last night. I could "feel" the bad areas, but no pain. Did not look at the Garmin, so that I would just do what felt comfortable. Somehow, I pulled off a 10:30 pace. :woohoo:

Went straight to a cold tub and stayed in long enough that my hands were still purple an hour later. Then I went with the warm epson salts bath (thanks cecilia). Then, I worried the bath was too hot and too long, so I slathered both legs in Biofreeze and came close to hypothermia again. :confused3

The good news is that I seem to be ok today! Going to try to get in one more run if the weather allows and take good care of my legs so I can make it through the 18-miler.

Tylenol/Advil - I took Advil before all my LRs, but I switched to 8-hour Tylenol race day. Probably didn't matter at that point, but just in case...

Anyone know if Tylenol's sponsoring again? If they are, remeber that you need to cut your packs open if you plan to take them to the start or else you may risk breaking a tooth. ;)

Thank you all for the welcome :grouphug:

Wow, there is so much to catch up on, got in another good walk yesterday about 45 mins. Ate OK, but resorted to 2 cans of pepsi which I have been trying to stay away from. It is my addiction, and I am trying to give it up.

Pixie dust :wizard: to all of you who are working through injuries right now.

You must all be so super excited right now.....your race is getting so close, that is sooo great. Can't wait to get all the reports.

Will check back later, gotta get to work.. :surfweb:

Have a great day

Another WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT? Say it ain't so! Splash Montain and Rock N' Roller Coaster are 2 of my favorite rides!!!! My DH's fav is Rock N' Roller Coaster! He's already disappointed that he can't participate with us and now they are closing his favorite ride during that time? :( :sad2:

Lynne - I'm interested. :)

My DD3.5 is upset about Splash Mountain because she is finally tall enough to ride it. My DD6 is upset about El Rio because next to IASM, this is her favorite ride. I think El Rio is open until until Sunday the 7th tho.

Rest Day Rest Day!!! I am so excited to have a rest day.

Have training everyone!

Good morning Team!! :sunny: I am happy to say that my quad/hip is feeling much better today. I iced my quad and outer hip 3 times last night; from 6:00-6:30, 8:00-8:30, and 11:20-11:40 and I took 2 Advil this morning--I feel 100% better. My quad is still a little tender and I can really feel a strain when I take too long of a stride, but my hip doesn't hurt at all. I'm going to run on the treadmill tonight crossing my fingers that I have minimal pain. :wizard: So, how long should I run for tonight? 3 miles? 4 miles? 5 miles? I don't think I should push it too much, but I do want to get some mileage in before my 18 on Saturday.

Carrie--I'm so glad that you are feeling better and that you got a good run in. We might just be okay after all. :goodvibes

Kevin--I hear ya about Splash Mountain, Rock 'n Roller Coaster, and El Rio del Tiempo, those are 3 of my favorite rides, Splash being my favorite. Next they'll be closing the park at 4:00! I really can't complain though, as I was just there in October and I'm sure we'll go down at least one other time in 2007. I just wish they could hold off on the rehabs a couple of weeks. I was looking at your anticipated finish times for the half and full marathons, it looks like you and Stephen will be running the course pretty close to each other.

Jen--How is your puppy doing? The thought of Hines getting into a mess like that makes me :crazy2: :crazy2: :crazy2: :crazy2:. I hope he feels better.

Mel--Speaking of Hines, you'll probably want to bench Hines Ward for Sunday's game, he had surgery on his knee on Monday and will be out this Sunday and maybe next Thursday against the Browns. With Ward and Polamalu both out, we don't have much have a chance this weekend, not that it really matters anyway. :sad2: :sad2:

Wow, I guess we have strong opinions about V-8 :p :teeth:

I might chicken out of the mid-run test, but definitely do the post-run one. I'll keep you posted ;)

Kevin plucks his eye-brows :rotfl2: Now I've heard everything :rotfl2: I won't tell you when I saw my first gray hair because it would make you mad. But I will say my Dad is 63 and still has jet black hair! Weird genes-- I'd trade that plus for many, many other things. You've got me scared to death with all your planning... I'm way behind. Goals???? I'm sticking with "finishing" for now!

I went to the Y last night with intent of running on the TM. That was out. I've never seen it so crowded. Every machine was in use so I waited for "first available" which turned out to be an arc trainer. So the only running for me this week will be the back-to-back LRs.

Krista & Carrie-- I'm so glad to hear your injuries are healing. :woohoo:

Susie-- great PR! :cheer2:

I read about Rock N Roller Coaster this morning!
:furious: THAT'S IT - I AM NOT GOING, DARN IT!!! :furious:

What am I supposed to do?
I have to count down with Steven Tyler - 5...4...3...2...1...AAAHHHHHH!!!!
Favorite ride closed & I'll have nothing to do while Chad is on ToT!!! :furious: :furious: :furious:

Kevin - don't pluck your gray's just get them colored..been doing that for 8 mths. now.

Mel - YakTracks are really neat. They are a rubber webbing, with coils, that fit over the bottom of your boots, or sneakers. Great for walking in the snow!

Sunny - Great Christmas pictures....how long did it take to put them up?

That stinks about RNR coaster & Splash mountain...I'm not sure what the other ride is :confused3

Keep up the good work TEAM :cheer2: I can't believe it's almost marathon time..wow, that year went by fast!

Was supposed to be 7mi last night, ended up about 6. I even drove around and found a bunch of blocks in a newer subdivision that haven't been paved yet so they're still that reddish brown clay lookin stuff which I figured would be much easier on the shins. If anything, it was harder, which was strange. Sections that were on pavement would actually feel better, even though it was a harder surface. Basically didn't have any fun. Wasn't tired, it just hurt. Kept dreaming about the day I could run til I was tired without having to worry about pain management.

I don't think it's any specific problem, since it's just my left leg now. I'm sure its just too much mileage too fast, but you can't really do anything about that as a first time marathoner trying to follow the basic novice schedule. Think I'm going to skip the 3 miler tomorrow, and just take 3 full days of rest leading into the 16 miler on Sat, the longest distance I will have ever run. Doubt it will clear up by then, but I'll probably take two Aleve beforehand just to make it go away, even if my body won't be able to tell me its injured. :guilty:

Good morning all. :sunny:

Today was a rest day so I folded laundry and finished trimming the tree. Our WISH ornaments look beautiful! :goodvibes

Umm, I must confess, this whole keeping your sodium levels up is news to me! Does it count if you put vodka in the V8? JK! I don't even really drink! Seriously, we are supposed to be sodium-loading the week before? How come I didn't know this?

Suzie - Thanks for the link! I'm going to read that as soon as I am done here. Looks like I'm not the only one with meniscus issues. I mean, that doesn't have any knee issues at all. Nope. Not me. Uh hu. Great question about the pain relievers. I'm an Advil girl myself but I also heard not to take them because of the effect they have on the liver. Isn't there something in the Program about this?

Kevin - You made me laugh! Don't you know men just get more handsome with age? Look at Mr Sean Connery. Mr George Clooney. They are like fine wine, that just gets better with age. Put yourself in that category. :teeth: The only goal I set is to finish ahead of the sweepers. Anything beyond that is a bonus. I plan on keeping my pace around 12:00 to 12:30. WHAT?? No R&R Coaster? :furious: MGM is the only park we are going to! When did this happen??? Charlie will be crushed. Oh Kevin, don't even get me started on what I still have to do. I'll start breaking out in hives. I WAS so organized but suddenly I feel so behind. I need an assistant!

Ok my office door is closed so it lokos like I am working really hard. Now...to go through all the little notes, hints and tips, suggestions, packing lists, ideas....all the things I have accumlated from you guys and MfM for the last year....
