Wk of Nov 26--WISH Walking/Running Club

Wow this thread moves quickly!

Thanks to everyone who sent out such warm welcomes.

Chimera asked what program I'm using to train - and at this point, I'm not really using anything because I'm just trying to get my body to move forward again. I like Galloway's wogging approach, so I'll probably start that next week. I bought a nice (well, nice for someone who doesn't really ride much) bicycle right before I got pregnant, so I'll probably use that to cross train in the spring.

Cruella - your run through the state park sounds like it could have been almost peaceful without the cheering squad!

Getnthinr - thanks for the thread to the half marathon report, I'm heading there in a minute. I've read a few on Allears and they are very motivational.

Keenercam - thanks. I think they're pretty cute too (except when they're waking me up in the middle of the night *again*) That is an amazing packing list!

Judy - that is terrible news to receive after training all year. :guilty:

I've read a number of reports that say lots of people carry Shuffles and other radio devices - does anybody even make an effort to hide them?

Amy--I have the same question: what pain is okay to just push through and when should you stop? What is a legitimate injury or just normal training aches and pains? :confused3 My quad hurts all the time, just walking around normally and especially going up and down stairs, not just when I run. If it's just a pain that isn't going to cause any further problems, then I'll grin and bear it, but how how do you know the difference? I don't have any joint pain, thankfully, I think I may have pulled a muscle. We'll be popping pain pills and slugging through our 18 miles together. :grouphug:

Judy--I just want to give you a great big hug!!!! :grouphug: Whatever you decide we're for you and support you 100%.

:guilty: :guilty: bad news....they've dropped the weather report to only 10 inches tomorrow....rats, I was really looking forward to 3 feet. :guilty: :guilty:

I'll report back tomorrow when I'm in a happier mood...so sad.

Amy & Krista - The rule of thumb that I use is that if I can't run normally, tehn I can't run through the pain. I also use the 10 minute rule. The first few minutes could eb just that I'm out of sync, but after 10, if I'm not right, I say it's not worth it. If you are "hobbling" at all, you risk hurting something else. Please be careful! Have someone else watch you. I thought I was doing pretty good Thursday adn Scott pulled the plug and said I was really favoring my leg. SO, you may want a second opinion. :wizard: :wizard: BTW, I'm on rest day #3. SKipped Saturday and I'm hoping to get out tomorrow. If it hurts, I'm turning back, though. As scott reminded me, I could run Zilwaukee (Thursday's location) and make it worse or rest and run WDW. Just a reminder. Many have made it with a max run of 16. I know it's not the best, especially if it's your first, but it can be done. The Penguin suggests that you take 3 days completely off & RICE. Then try again. If it hurts, 3 more days. After that, see a doc. (Scott made me read the chapter last night)

Long story short, I'm on teh DL until tomorrow. Wll try again and see how it goes. I'm thinking it's an IT band but not sure. So, no trainign reports, besides a failed start on Thursday last week. :guilty:

:grouphug: Carrie: THANK YOU! I'll take your advice. Works well too b/c I have my doc scheduled for next Monday. Can always cancel if I make a full recovery ;). So 3 days off....total rest (NO exercise)...ice and anti-inflam. We'll see...guess I'll attempt an easy run on Thurs. If I can't....three more and we'll try the LR on Sunday. Really...thank you SO much. Your advice was greatly needed :goodvibes .

Oh...and PD :wizard: and :grouphug: for your injury Carrie!!! I sure hope it heals up super quickly!!!! I'm sorry to hear you've been dealing with pain too :(.

Amy - BTW, that wrap-around pain sounds a lot like I had last year around the 10 adn 12 mile weeks. RICE worked wonders. Oh, I love your sig quote too! :grouphug: We WILL make it!! We've come way too far not to now!

I have to say Judy my other thought was what would you have done if you didn't happen to go to the doctor? It doesn't sound like the pain really affects your training. You might not have gone to the doctor at all until after the race, right? And you still would have trained. I think you'll be OK. Just take it easy and get thee to a pool!!! Seriously, can you get to a pool anywhere? Sounds like some swogging instead of the treadmill might save some wear and tear on your knee.

I think this is an excellent question. Dr. Sarno (and Dr. Sopher, my dr) believe an MRI or negative dr visit can have a "necebo" effect-- the opposite of placebo-- it can actually cause you to experience more pain due to the fear factor. I definitely believe my pain doubled after having multiple NS's act so puzzled and say they don't usually see this kind of thing in someone my age, etc. They had me convinced I was 70 years old in body.

And I second the "Get thee to a pool" commandment. You can keep building endurance with ZERO impact!

Monte-- I thought I was the only crazy who looks forward to massive snow storms :rotfl2: I'm so sorry you'll only be getting 10 inches. I hate getting all geared up and then finding out its a dud!

MelR-- Good to see you, I was beginning to wonder where you were. Have you seen Happy Feet yet? I have a new found love for penguins  It's a must see for sure!

This is definitely the point in training when pain and the fear-factor start messing with our minds. I agree with Carrie, if it's sharp and causes you to alter your gait, then rest. If it's nagging, it's probably unavoidable "body mutiny". The bod has reached a point where it's beginning to question your sanity and it's gonna fight back!

Kristi-- I always use my turn signals, too. But then again, I'm a transplant. I was actually born in Colorado. I used to J-walk before the invention of cell phones...

I'll quote Bill Walton here, "minor surgery is what they do to other people."

I had the same condition that you have now a few years ago. A nasty foul on the soccer pitch created the tear in the miniscus in fall of 1997 but it wasn't much more than an inconvenience until early 1999 when it locked a couple of times and I had the MRI done. It needed the surgery, which I put off a few months until the season was over, then I had it done.

By the way, they tell you that you'll be able to walk on it right after the scope, and that is true for most people, but not for me. My knee swelled up like a grape and it hurt like crazy. 3 days later I had it drained, and it was better, but it took me a few more days until I was able to walk pain free, and a few weeks before light jogging was possible. Yes, most people are up right away, but not all people. And it was over a year before running was completely pain free.

If you have it scoped in 2 weeks when they can schedule you and it goes well, you can make it to the race. On the other hand, if it doesn't go perfectly then you are done for Jan 6 2007.

If it is an inconvenience, pain but not an "injury" then you'd be able to finish the half and have it done after.

You know your body better than anyone else. If you're confident you can make it to January 12 for the scope, then go for it. If you don't think you can make it, have the scope done as soon as you can. Only you can make that call.

Remember that physicians apply one size fits all to situations like this. Make the choice you are comfortable with.

Carrie :wizard: :grouphug: It's ok if your spelling is wobbly, but we don't want wobbly legs :sad2: RICE and listen to Scott. I know two people who ran their first fulls with only one 16 mile max LR.

ETA: I know this isn't your first, I was just commenting on your comment about the 16!

:grouphug: :goodvibes Thanks SUnny! I'm listening. I keep repeating it so I don't forget. ;) I felt realy good for 16 adn I know if I cut back on pace I'll be ok. Still hoping things will clear up soon, though. I'm so lazy at heart that I'm always afraid of just being lazy when I stop. That's why I need my rule of thumb.

Last week was a great training week for me. I did 2 runs at 6 miles each with the pace under 9:45 and on Saturday I did 21 miles in 3:28! I have never run that far before. Now I know I can make the marathon. I felt really good through the entire run and didn't experience any muscle fatigue. I did get a little bored mentally. I was really surprised that I wasn't sore at all yesterday or today. I guess the hours of training have paid off.

Living in the state with the "Greatest Snow on Earth" is going to put a damper on training this week. It's snowing now and we are suppose to get 2 feet. That means I have to be on a treadmill which seems much harder for me. I will look at it as the rest will be good for me.

Thanks everyone for the packing list. Are the 2 pair of shoes and 2 pair of running clothes for those goofy people? I plan to bring my running clothes and shoes in my carry on. I'd leave my DH behind before I left my shoes!

Wishing you all a great training week!

Amy - I am no expert by any means, but this doesn't sound so good to me. Please take care of yourself! :wizard:

Good Morning TEAM: :surfweb:

I'm waking up and fueling up before my SWOG this morning. I'm hitting the pool when it opens at 6:45a.

I got out there and ran for the first time since Wednesday. I did 3.09 miles on the hilly Mt Hope Cemetery course in 31 min for a 10:10 mpm pace. I felt pretty good, but the couple of huge hills were killing me. I didn't get my 60 min in because I didn't want to push it too much. I thought a good round of stretching afterwards would do me more good than another 30 min of running. My shins were sore so I iced them for 20 min, and I'm getting MelR's left booty pain. I did a lot of hip flexor stretches to try to help.

Morning Team,

Well, today is my first physical therapy session -- I'm really hoping that she can work some magic. :goodvibes

My 15 (supposed to be 16) mile went relatively okay but I believe I could have done better. My knee is a little sore but nothing compared to what it was early in the month.

Tonight is a 5 miler (I think) and then on Thursday I have a personal trainer session.....I wish I would have done more crosstraining while training :guilty: .

I still have to catch up on everyone -- I just skimmed before writing this.

Last night I did 4.75 with a 10:24 pace. I definately want some of that snow that people are talking about. We are having a nice heat wave (upper 70's) and it is making the training runs more difficult. I promise not to complain about the cold any more. :teeth:

Judy -- Good luck with your decision. :grouphug: Just take it easy. By the way, what is the latest Mist update. Maybe you can just sneak her into the half and let her give you a ride for a while. ;)

Amy -- I would say if you are limping getting in and out of a car it is bad. You know your body the best and what things are really painful and what is just annoying. There were a few times last year that I had to take a week or two off because something didn't feel right. Much to my annoyance (and probably Lynnda's as well since she had to listen to me complain), I waited to see what was wrong and everything got a little better and I took it easier the next time.

Sonya -- Good job on your runs.

Jodi -- Hope your therapy session goes well today.

Bill

Carrie--Thanks for the advice! I'm going to take one more day off and then run tomorrow. My hip has been hurting ever since I woke up this morning, I'm hoping it's just the way I slept last night. I know it's possible to finish a marathon only doing a lr of 16 miles, but I don't plan on that happening to me!! I will finish my 18 and 20 milers if I have to crawl. :thumbsup2 I hope you are feeling better and get back to running again.

Amy--How are you feeling today?

I understand that desire more than anything, but if you have to crawl, you're likely pushing your body too hard. ;) We did not finish our 18-miler last year. Only 15, due to a variety of things but mostly weather conditions. We had an awesome 20-miler. (Went to GA to make sure weather would not be an issue, so I understand the importance to you.) If you have to skip your 18 to heal, it will not kill you. It will hurt mentally, but will only help physically. Please remember that you'd rather run at WDW than kill yourself on your 18 or 20. :goodvibes

Hi everyone!

For those people running with injuries:

Our coaches tell us the story of a runner who had a pulled hamstring but kept running and ended up with his opposite knee injured because his limping changed his gait. The hamstring would have delayed his training but would have healed however the knee injury required surgery and pretty much ended his long distance running forever.

My older sister has been a runner for thirty years and she is constantly reminding me that all these running programs have you running almost the maximum amount of mile required. They know you are going to skip some so they pack them full. She thinks a lot of beginners end up over trained and injured because of this. She runs marathons and rarely tops a 20 mile week - however she has years of muscle memory to help her out.

Hang in there and let yourself heal, it will make you stronger. Besides I am constantly amazed at one extra day of rest does for my entire body. Also, try soaking in epsom salts. The box says that they can help with overuse injuries.

AmyBeth – I had an inflamed sacroiliac joint last year and my doctor quickly diagnosed it and came up with a treatment plan that really worked for me. I took 2 aleve each morning and each evening and when I woke up in the morning, I’d lay on the floor next to the bed and put my legs up on the bed and my bottom right up against the bedskirt, so that my body was perpendicular to my thighs. I’d stay in that stretching position for about 10 minutes while I prayed or read a book. I also tried to do it at night whenever I remembered and had time. It really helped a lot and within a short period of time. I hope you feel better soon, sweetie.

Carrie - I hope you are feeling better and stronger. I LOVE that Scott kept an eye on you and pulled the plug on your run. What a sweetheart! It must be so amazing to have someone to train with.

Krista – I am glad you are going to take another day off.

It’s funny – we sound like the walking wounded, don’t we? IF you had any doubts at all about the enormity of this undertaking, just think of the messages our bodies are sending us. We are undertaking a long and arduous journey to an enormously significant goal. We have to take care of our bodies so that they will take us all the way to the FINISH, but every little twinge should also serve as a reminder of how “big” this is.

Okay, guys, I must confess, my biggest worry right now is Howard. “Burned out” does not begin to describe where he is right now physically and mentally. I can't even bear how tired he looks even when he wakes up in the morning. He turns in his first final this Thursday and then has another 3, with the last being done 12/13, I think. I think the last time he ran was 10+ miles more than 2 weeks ago. All of you who have been around here a while know how stubborn he can be – just remember he finished the 2006 half in 2:14 when the doctors weren't sure he'd make it to the airport, much less the start line. But he did it with a stent in place and at least 10 potty breaks. But I don’t know how in the world I can let him undertake the Goofy with no training, or with training starting only 3.5 weeks before marathon weekend. But I know how I’d feel if he tried to stop me from doing what I feel I must, so all I can do is support him. So, if you would just keep him in your prayers and send pixiedust, I’d really appreciate it. I am so worried that he will end up injured in this process, and even though he says he won’t schedule another distance event until the 2008 WDW marathon, I really don’t want him to be on the injured list after this one.

Good Morning all.

I am joining in. My entire family will be doing one race or another in 2008. DH and DS the full and DD and I the 1/2. We are all super excited about doing this and joinning you all.

We are newbies so I hope we don't have to many stupid questions for you all.

We are going to do a few other races through the year to get a feel for what to expect in January 2008.

Any advise you have for some new walker/joggers/runners would be greatly appreciated.

My family is further ahead fitness wise then I am. I have about 30 pds to lose before I seriously start any running, I don't think I should put all that extra weight on my joints...correct me if I am wrong so I am just walking, slight jogging, biking and weight training right now. I hope to get rid of this 30 pds by April, May at the leastest and then get serious.....does this sound good or am I going about it all wrong???

Any input would be appreciated.

I will go back now and catchup on all the posts.

Kim
