Wk of Nov 12--2007 WISH Walking/Running Club

Cam & Howard :grouphug: I am so sorry for your loss.

Judy-- no, the Big E isn't very close to me, but closer than NY!

Kristi-- great pic of the air travel :rotfl2: Did you happen to see the news on my town today?

I was up in NH seeing a very interesting dr who believes my pain is benign, a residual effect of the Levaquin, he has actually seen another patient suffer a reaction like mine. TG I'm not crazy. Anyhoo, I call for messages before I leave to drive to work and discover both my kids schools are in CODE BLUE LOCK DOWN! There was a car break in and a gun shot at the high school (where Sonya was). OMG, needless to say, I didn't make it to work....

As for training and pain... Dx and I did HIS first training run on Friday: 8 miles (13:10 avg pace), then I did my 18 miler on Saturday (14:20 avg pace, might as well walked it!). Then I did a 90 minute hard weight lifting session on Sunday and have been in terrible pain since. But I'm taking this doctor's theory on faith and working through the pain. I owe thanks to a WISHer who told me about a book by Dr. Sarno (sorry, I can't remember who it was now). Anyway, Dr. Marc Sopher is featured in his book and has written his own book about living pain free AND is a marathon runner. How much better can it get. AND he's not affiliated with Lahey Clinic! In fact, he is a private practioner, an absolute unheard of thing around here. I arrived early, he took me in early and spent over an hour with me. All I can say is Wow, there still are some human doctors in the world :cloud9:

Yesterday and today ended up being rest days, but I think I needed them.

Anyone interested in this Dr's philosophy can find it here: Mindbody Syndrome If you are interested in this sort of stuff, I highly recommend The Divided Mind by Dr. John Sarno.

Hi WISH Team!
I posted last night, but I guess it never went through. Sorry, I probably won't reconstruct it all.

MelR, what everyone said. You are amazing and your report was keeping me on the edge.

Cam, welcome back. Hope all gets better.

Sunny, Oh I hope this works out for you! Glad you've found a second opinion.

Kidlets and "entertainment" suggestion, whatever it is you provide, let it ONLY be for the trip. We'd get the new little things that would only be for the trip so it at least had some "new thing" time.

I did want to say that my 8 miler this weekend turned into a 9 miler and I had a great! one! I had a 13:23 overall pace and basically felt fine after. That is the fastest easiest pace I have EVER done at this distance. I was not trying for the speed, I was experimenting. I didn't pay as close attention to the Garmin as I normally do, I did R4/W1 or R3/W2 and it felt good. Amazing!

My next good report is I finally got shoes! The poor guy at Fleet Feet went through everything they had. I knew I wanted the Mizunos, but asked to see what the others were like. I bought the Elixers for the half and have the Creation on order for the full.

I've got some issue with my right knee along the outside (tendon) and wonder if it is the shoe fit or something else. The person I was talking with at the running store said it might be I am doing something differently with my step. I have been doing the cold bath after LR and tonight after TM it seems ok. Hoping...

Thank you for the kind and supportive thoughts and all the prayers you have said on our behalf. I really appreciate it. :grouphug:

My Step-Father, Dave, was a great man who lived life simply, who always deserved more than life could afford him, who had a very strong work ethic and cared very deeply for his friends and especially his family. He will always be a part of me and he will be sorely missed.

I've decided to run the Goofy in his memory and will hopefully be wearing his name somewhere on my race bib or shirt. I ran the March 2006 Caesar Rodney Half-Marathon (in Wilmington, DE) in his honor and presented him with my race bib and my finisher's medal. My goal was sub-two, I finished in 1:59:37.

Thank you again everyone. I am sorry I am not here much, the 20 hours a week working and full-time MBA classes are taking its toll in many ways. No time to train and no energy after staying up studying every night.

Keep up the great work! I am looking forward to seeing everyone in Disney World in a few short weeks.

:grouphug:

Howard

Well I did get in 4 miles the other night with a 10:25 pace so training seems to be going well. I am looking forward to the day where I am actually able to sleep late at least once in a while. :teeth:

Mel -- during our trip this summer, we took a DVD player and a LMAX learning system for the plane. It kept Billy fully entertained for the 5-6 hours in the plane. As for the wall at 20 miles, that is probably the reason since your body hasn't gone that far yet.

Sunny -- Good to hear from you again and glad your training is progressing but hope the injuries will stop now.

Cam and Howard -- Glad the ceremony was nice and it gave you a chance to see the impact that he made to everyone.

Lily -- Glad to hear your training run was good. Hope you figure out what is wrong with you knee though.

Need to get back to work now since people are starting to come up with problems.

Bill

Howard

Thanks for letting us know you are hanging in as well as possible. Your first semester will be over soon and you'll hopefully be able to breathe again.

Take care

Craig

Morning all!!!

Carrie-- No, no I do not like this weather. You know, I almost wish it would just snow. At least that would be.... I dunno.... kinda festive. true that would mean it was even colder and I would only have the one road in the neighborhood that gets plowed with any regularity to run on, but at least it wouldn't be so dreary.

Mel-- BCS pull :rotfl: Two words that would solve the WHOLE mess: Playoff System. :teeth: The other three football divisions have been doing it for years with no complaints. (And that's my two cents on that.) :teeth:

Sunny-- OMG!! I'm guessing it all turned out OK. How scary!!

Krista-- I had to LOL at you just now writing your trip report because I just got started on mine from last January as well. I'm hoping to finish it up and get it posted.

Yesterday I did 5 miles on the treadmill in 46:46, so 9:21/mile pace. I felt good afterward, but I think 5 miles is just about my limit on the TM. Our indoor track was packed when I went to go use it, so this was the last resort. I do have to admit those little televisions they mount to the front are a great distraction.

I get a "fun-filled" 9 miles this afternoon. :o

Happy training,
Kevin :earsboy:

Sunny - I was thinking of you all morning! We ran that story about the high school all morning, and I couldn't wait to get on here to see if that was your daughter's school! Thank God it was ok. But it's nice to hear Sonya was there in a way - that she is still in school - yay!

Great news on the new doctor too! I was hoping you would keep trying to find someone to take you seriously and get to the bottom of this. Isn't it great when you find *that* doctor? My gastro problems aren't as serious as your pain issues, but it was such a relief to find a doctor who knew what was going on with me after years of going from one gastro to another. Just don't give up until you get answers - the right answers!

Another thing about traveling with the kiddos: those special toys are just for trips (like someone else mentioned). In fact, I just bought new Sponge Bob color wonder paper for the looonnnggg drive this January. And no, we don't normally sit him in front of the tv for hours on end. (just in case I came across as a total 'tv mom') That's just a special traveling thing! We do have a video tape player in the van, but it only gets used on long car rides - an hour or more.

Kevin - I'm torn. I'd rather have snow than rain, but snow-covered and icy paths and wind stink. They do plow a road in our area regularly, but it's 55 mph. :guilty: What will you do with all your free time this weeknd? ;)

Mel - OK, here's teh cold bath (note that I don't typically use ice. Although I had to in Houston, as teh bath watyer never got cold there). Put on a sweatshirt and roll the bottom up so that it doe snot get wet. Lily said to have a hot drink handy. I need to try that one. Just cover the bottom of the tub with luke warm water. get in. Then turn the water to cold. Fill until all needed spot are covered and soak. I usually go 10 to 20 minutes after My legs are covered. A good book helps too. As for the wall at 20. It started to get hard at 20, as it was hot for me and boring at that point. I really didn't hit the wall until 24. I do admit that when I hit 20 and Idid not feel as good as I did at the end of the 20-mile LR, I was a bit worried. Then again, I also felt like I hit a little wall before AK. That was likely heat, boredom and the nasty waste water plant smell.

Lily - Congrats on the 9-miler!

Bill - Great job on teh run!

Howard - That sounds liek a great idea! Thanks fo checking in with us! :grouphug:

Craig - Good to see you around!!!

Sunny - Glad you found a doc that makes sense! Hope your kids' schools are back to nromal and everyone's safe!

Krista - Did I mention that my MIL's an MSU grad? lol. DH told me she invited my mm to come this year. I just laughed. My mom's already upset that I'm missing the game.

Just did 40 min at Curves lsat night. 40 min run tonight. Guess what. High in the mid 40s and rain redicted. This is nuts.

Good Morning TEAM: :surfweb:

OK, I got 40 min in on the treadmill this morning. I did a 5 min warmup walk, 40 min at 6.0 mph (10 mpm), and then a 5 min cool down. I stretched afterwards. My legs are feeling OK, but the run seemed tough. Kind of like Monday's run. It just really seemed like a struggle to get my time in. I had to keep convincing myself to keep going. Maybe I'm bored on the treadmill, but I wanted to have a nice soft cushy surface to give my legs a break.

I seem to remember some people saying that last year around this time "the bottom fell out" of their training. Was that you that said that Carrie? I'm wondering if this is what you're talking about. Training feels tough right now. I think I may not be fully recovered from my weekend LRs before doing my SRs during the week. I've dropped one of my running days, and replaced it with a x-training day. So right now I'm only running 3 days a week. Maybe I'll run 4 days on a week when my LR is not quite so long, but I really don't want to injure myself so I can't complete my LRs. I switched my x-training to get back into the pool to SWOG. I think the water really makes my legs feel good.

Anyhow, I was wondering if anyone else feels this way with the training. Is this the hard part? Because it sure seems like it to me.

Hi Everyone-

I have been reading everyday but haven't had time to post. Life gets so crazy at times.

Mel - What an interesting race! Congratulations on your finish! I can not handle being cold and would have quit way back at the beginning. I am so impressed with your endurance!

And who asked about traveling with kids? I am an old pro at it now.
#1 rule- be prepared. I don't care if your child has NEVER had a potty accident - pack extra clothes. And be sure that everyone travels in comfortable clothes and shoes. (may sound obvious, but you would be surprised.)
#2 rule - no sugary drinks. Water is your friend. They WILL drink it if they are thirsty and it doesn't shoot through them when you are racing from one terminal to the next with 10 minutes between flights.
#3 rule - Have FUN, if you are stressed they will whine & if you are laughing, they will laugh. This should probably be rule #1 because it makes all the difference in the entire experience.

Due to big storms, I am running my midweek LR on the treadmill at the gym. Yuck.

Happy Trails everyone!

Hi, everyone!
Sunny -- OMG! I would have freaked, though as Kristi said, I am glad to hear that Sonya is hanging in there for her senior year.

I had hoped to do 8 miles on the TM last night, but stopped after an hour. A little over 4 miles -- pace around 14:40, I think. Not great, but just trying to get back into the habit of getting some steps in. I had hoped to do a pull-back week Thanksgiving while we are in Hilton Head, but am thinking I may actually try to get up in the wee hours on Friday and/or Saturday and really load some miles on the TM and walking on the island.

Oh, and the big news -- after trying 4 MORE shoe models with no luck, I broke down yesterday and ordered kayanos. I am really, really hoping this may finally be the right shoe. Unfortunately, no one stocks them around here in wide width so I haven't been able to try them on. The other unfortunate thing is that they are pink & white so they will totally clash with all of my running clothes and most certainly my WISH gear! So, with my luck where fashion goes, I am pretty optimistic these may fit my feet, even if not my wardrobe! :rotfl:

Today was a rest day. So I rested @ 0mph @ 0% for 7 hours. :lmao:

Dave - I personally can not think of a better Christmas gift. :yay: How incredibly exciting!!!! And they won't even have to wait that long to go!

Krista - Oh I don't think I'd last very long on the TM without a movie! Problem is though, I went to the library just last night to return two DVDs and to take out two more but I realized.....I had already seen them all! Uh oh. And now I have all winter to go. Shoot. Maybe I better check out NetFlix or something.

Mel - Ohh...I am honored to have done the same workout as you! :worship:

Sunny - WOW! How scary! What a world we live in now.... :sad2: Oh I hope so much this doctor can help you.

Howard...

Bill - I hear ya about the sleeping in. On rest days I stay in bed until 5:30 or so and it feels wonderful! :cloud9:

Dave - I don't seem to be struggling right now, I think my nerves are starting to take over as it gets closer and closer, but Charlie is a bit. He feels tired all the time. I suggested he take it easy, cut back a little for a week or so. I don't know if that's the smart thing to do right now, but I don't know what else to tell him. Let's see what other people have to say about the bottom falling out..... :rolleyes1

Cam - They are raspberry!! I know, I know. I'm doing the black and lime green thing too. :teeth: Maybe we have to let ASICS know we need them in different colors. I hope you like them.

I always struggle with what to put in Charlie's Christmas stocking but not this year! I'm filing it with gel and Shot Blocks and Cliff Bars!! Perhaps a pair of good running socks. Oh yes, now I have all sorts of ideas!

Judy -- I'd also highly recommend the stick. Howard scoffed when I told him he'd need it, but now he relies on it after long runs. I think that would be kind of fun sticking out of a stocking. I bought the small one for Howard. Did you join the VIP club? If so, it's free shipping. Here is where you can find it:the stick--travel size

Oh, and sport beans. You definitely can put sport beans in the stocking, too!

Kristi -- That picture of Zach is adorable! What a cutie pie.

As for traveling with kids, I agree with all the suggestions here. We took Andy to WDW for the first time when he was 9 months old and both kids have been traveling since birth with very long, frequent car rides. We always bought new coloring books, crayons (now wonder markers are fabulous), sticker books, little toys (jenn loved polly pocket). For the past several years, music w/headphones and portable DVD players have been the thing, along with hand-held games. Also, I always did snack size baggies of lots of different treats like goldfish, pretzel goldfish, fruit chews, m&m's, etc. Not too much in any one bag, so that I could spread the treats out. We also liked taking various card games from old maid, go fish and regular playing cards. Fun!

OK, you people that put fashion sense and running together are killing me. I think I'll go with the thought that my shirt will be so bright that no one notices shoe color. ;) Not that I have every really cared. However, I'm envisioning the Tommy Hilfiger ad I saw running the bike path this summer. Blonde, thin, coordinating Hilfiger work out clothes. Honestly, I wanted to find a mud puddle and kick her into it. ;) I felt like such a slob. :guilty:

Dave - The bototm fell out for me this time last year, as I was injured. The snow was already making a major impact too. That's pretty much what I blamed it on, but it is hard. Seems like I was stiff every day. We're close enough that the mileage is kicking our hineys, but still too far out to see the light at the end of teh tunnel or have the confidence that we can do it. Just hang in there. It will be worth it! I guess that's one advantage that I have this year over last. I know it will be worth it. FYI - I could not do all the TM work outs. That is soo hard.

Cam - It's tough, but getting up and getting going while you're away is a rewarding feeling. Not easy and I LOVE my sleep, but it feels tso good to have accomplished it before you start your day. :wizard:

Judy - lol. 0 mpm for 0 hrs! I love it!

Oh Cam, excellent suggestion! Thanks! No I didn't join yet. People keep wanting me to DO THINGS here at work. I mean really, can't they see I HAVE A MARATHON TO GET READY FOR!!!!

Carrie - Oh please. I'm just teasing about the fashion bit! That's sooooo not me. :teeth:

OK this is terrible but I just have to say... Car rides with my parents used to consist of my sister and I in the back seat staring out the window with occasion bursts of "She touched me!" and "Mommy, she's staring at me!" Then my mother would turn around and smack one of us. This, of course, while she and my father were both smoking cigarettes and drinking cans of beer, naturally as my dad was driving his huge 1964 Chevy Impala about 120mph!

It's a miracle I'm even here to type this, now that I think about it! :faint:

Thank God for the miracle!

I can't believe I forgot to mention this earlier.

Today is my one year anniversary of training!

:woohoo: :thumbsup2  :yay: :woohoo: :thumbsup2 :woohoo: :thumbsup2  :yay: :woohoo: :thumbsup2 :woohoo: :thumbsup2  :yay: :woohoo: :thumbsup2

Last year on this day I stepped on the TM for the first time. I had never - in all my 45 years - done anything even remotely athletic, except for riding my horse maybe. I fell off my friend's horse in July and had to have ACL replacement surgery in August. By November 15th I finally had permission from my surgeon and physical therapist to start walking on the TM. I did 20 min @ 2.5 and I was positively thrilled! I remember how for so long I was listening to you guys talk about training and all that you were doing and I was so anxious to get going. Those 20 minutes felt like a HUGE accomplishment for me. Kinda funny that now, a year later, 20 min is a warm up for me. Just goes to show you what hanging around here for a year will do!

Many many MANY thanks to Cam who brought me here. You have no idea what a difference you have made in my life. I now have something I do that is just for me, and that I feel so very good about. Something I am really proud of. And, something I really enjoy!!

Also, many thanks to all of you who have been so supportive of me over the past year. :grouphug: You have endured all my silly beginner questions and given me the best advice. I have no other coach, team, or trainer. It's all you guys. So when I stand at the starting line early on that Saturday morning in January, I know exactly who to thank for getting me there. All of you.

Carrie-- About the cold soak; I do it exactly as you described but I do add the hot tea. I wear a hoodie with a large hood over my head, hunch over the hot tea and gulp it fast enough to burn my throat! The good part is, I forget all about how cold I am. Talk about a sight

Cam-- good luck with the Kyanos. Mine are sliver/blue but last year they were purple and went quite well with lime green :rotfl:

Judy-- Happy Anniversary! You've come so far in one year. It's amazing.

Dave-- Great job on getting back to the SWOG. I need to do that, too. It's so much harder to fit into the schedule but sooooo good for the legs.

Last year I trained really hard, averaging about 8 workouts per week (I was doing the twice a day thing). I had some days that I literally couldn't get out of bed. Even without injury, I wouldn't do it that way again.

Sunny

Judy - I thought you joined us about this time last year. Way to go!!! Have you found any of your old posts to show yourself how far you've come? can oyu believe how close you are now? :cheer2: Thanks for all the laughs and giving us some extra spunk!!!!

Sunny - Very good idea on the hoodie!
