Wk of May 11 - WISH Walking/Running Club

Bill: Ah, the recliner events...some of my favorites. All my favorite shows, competing for my attention? Who will win, who will be TIVOed. Tune in to find out... How ARE the smoke/fires in your neighborhood at this point?

I think most of the fires are close to under control now. However the winds shifted a little and there was a definate smoke smell this morning. I liked it better when I couldn't tell anything was happening. The best part is all the roads are open again so traffic is getting a little better.

... I don't think he's noticed lately that I am doing this. Hee hee. One of these days I'm just going to take it all off! (No comments, Vic and NEPBill and OrginalBill.)

Awwwww, but that could be taken so many ways, especially when you have talked about handcuffs and foam rollers in the previous pages. But since you asked, I will be nice...

Bill

Wow! what an active group... posted my first message on Monday and it's been one of those crazy weeks after you get back from vacation where nothing really gets done but you're constantly running around now there are 10+ pages on this board :thumbsup2 Thanks for all the welcomes.... let me get to responding to the first 4 pages
Sailors wife: :welcome: You are in the right place. I always tell people to go for it!! I think you can do a Half, heck if I could do a half my first time out and I was a walker, then you can do it. It just takes some preparation and courage to give it a go!! You have plenty of time to train for a March 1/2 marathon. I am not a runner, but I am sure you will get alot of encourgement on this weekly thread to help you along with your goals and your specific training program you will use to help you. I am sure someone will see this and will put you on one of the smaller teams, like I'm on Walt's Warriors.
Good luck to you and keep us posted!!

I'd love to join a team... I always function best in small groups:grouphug: Thanks again for the warm welcome. Hubby definitely doesn't think I can do the half... now I have to figure out how to sneak that $120 past him so I can go ahead and register I had planned on running in a 10k this weekend for my first race, but after this week I don't think I'm going to be able to make it, although I might go down and watch. I must have overdone it last week at WDW b/c I tried my run on Tuesday after taking the weekend off and managed to get my first ever series of shin splints:scared1: So now I'm building back up to jogging my 3 miles.. I really wanted to add more miles this week.. we'll see how the rest of the week goes.

Mahalo Debaroni.

Welcome Sailor's Wife: Sounds like your training is going well. :welcome:

Thanks for the welcome... after the stall this week I'm feeling discouraged, but I'm determined to finish out the C25K plan this month!

sailors wife -- :welcome: This is an awesome place to find support and encouragement and advice, though it sounds as if you are doing awesome already!

My training: yesterday was endurance training as I searched wayyy too many stores for pretty girly shoes to fit my "wanna wear running shoes" bear paws. (yes, that's what Howard calls them! :lovestruc ). I did find a cute pair of white lacey skechers for the reception (how's that for a compromise!! I was making all sorts of promises to my paws, er, feet as I squeezed them into girly shoes with the compromise being girly shoes for the ceremony and first dance and "trainers" for the rest of the time :lmao: ).
Today was W4D1 of C25k. Having jogged for more than 6 minutes straight on Saturday gave me the mental boost to think I could do it, and it really wasn't as bad as I feared. Some good hip-hop music and a couple soundtrack songs helped those 5 minute jogging intervals go a bit easier. :yay: I had a bit of tension in my left quad but no hip or ankle issues, thank God. I'll put ice on the quad today, just to baby it a bit. I am actually looking forward to W4D2 Wednesday. :faint:

Thanks for the welcome!! I know what you mean about that first week of 5 min intervals.. I think it took me 2 weeks to work up the "courage" to run for 5 mins straight... after that, though, I feel like I can go on longer:rolleyes1 today is my longest run.. going for the 25 min run on week 6.. should be interesting Good luck finding shoes.. my feet live in Crocs and Trainers.. Whenever I have to get dressed up for work they always protest for days and days afterwards

Sailor's Wife - Welcome! Sounds sliek you have already done great things! Can't wait to share more with you!
Thanks! This is such an active group and I've already gotten so much advise from everyone!!! I'm glad to have a place to go to get encouragement, esp since I dont' really get it from home.. DH has never been the supportive type:headache:

Sailors wfe- Welcome to the world of running/walking. You are on the right page. I think if you start training now to do the half in the spring you might be fine. Everyone is different so you will have to judge for yourself but I think if you only train for the 5K now and don’t start training for the half until after the 5K it might be a bit hard to get the miles in such a short time.

There are a lot variables that come in thought. For example will you jog the 5K but run/jog the half? The slower pace would make it easier. A good rule to go by is the 10% rule. It just means that you shouldn’t up your weekly miles by more than 10% from one week to the next. So if you walk/jog/run 5 miles this week you want to do 5.5 next week, 6.05 the week after that, 6.65, 7.32 ect. Just make sure to listen to your body, you’ll know if you are pushing too hard.
Thanks for all those tips!!! I was unsure about how quickly I should start adding miles (considering I couldn't go 1 mile in March and now I can do 3:cool1: ) It's taken me longer then I would like to get through the C25K program, but I've been taking it slow and getting out there more then 3 times a week.. I'm hoping to finish it up this month.. we'll see, though. This week was tough, and I still really can't figure out what happened to set me back, but I'm almost back up to normal... I just really wish I had been able to finish out and do the 10K this weekend... there's always next time .. Once I finish the C25K program I think I'm going to start the run/walk 1/2 training on Cool Runnings.. that will get me used to the longer runs and cross training (something I haven't been doing very well:rolleyes1 ) and hopefully I can get that done by next march and be ready for my first real long race:yay:

sailors_wfe :welcome: I'm sure someone probably already mentioned this, but if you want to try to run in the Jan 09 half at DW, you might still be able to get a race registration through a travel company. Anthony Travel is the one I signed up through b/c I waited too long! Doh! Check out this link there are a bunch of charities you can run for too! With the travel company Anthony, I had to book three nights with them at a resort, and got a race registration. Since I'm going to be in Disney that weekend for other reasons, this wasn't a big deal for me, as we're going to be staying for a few days (sweet). Link to Marathoning HTHs and again, welcome!
~Bride Michelle

wow.. I didn't realize you could go through a TA and get into the race... if we weren't DVC members and already had our hotel for Jan booked I'd do that in a heartbeat... I really wish I'd decided to do the half before it had filled up... then again, back then I didn't think I'd be able to do the 5K:rotfl:
Hi, WISH teammates! :cheer2:

Sailors wfe[/B]: :welcome: You are in the right place! Most of us are finding Bingham's Marathoning for Mortals to be the best guidebook for training for long distance events. :)

Duckie

Thanks for the book advice.... I saw your post and immediately ordered that book and his other book, Courage to start (I think??) on Tuesday, so hopefully they arrive by the weekend:cool1: Sounded like some good books, I can't wait to get started reading them.
:yay:

Ok.. that's all I have time for today...if I want to get in a run I need to get started... Hope everyone has a great day...again, thanks for the welcome and the encouragement.. I'll post more later on today as I have time:rolleyes1

:bday: Jen!!!!

I got up a bit late so didn't get out until about 7am but it was a nice easy 4 miles. I love running at POR! :lovestruc

Hope everyone has a good day! I'll be in meetings the rest of the day which is not as much fun as running :sad1:

Happy Thursday everyone!

I got in some treadmill time on tuesday and wednesday (total of 5 miles in 1:15)..Nothing yesterday though..( I did find time though to drink 2 summer shandy beers :rolleyes1 ) My college BFF is coming into town today for the weekend so I needed to get ready for that!

I expect to be fully back on track for training next week. ( I better be after all the mojito calories I will be consuming this weekend :rolleyes1 )

Happy Birthday, Jen!! party: :cake:

Decided to sleep in this morning and didn't go to the gym or to weight watchers. UGH! Tomorrow is out, too. SO, I am thinking I'll hopefully be desperate to run come Saturday. Then it hit me that next Saturday is my 5 mile race. :scared1: I cannot believe how that completely slipped my mind. I'd better try to do a bit more distance this weekend so that my body doesn't revolt at 2 miles somewhere in the scenic little shore town of Spring Lake NJ. It's bad enough that our friend, Jim, who runs 8-10 miles every single morning!!! and Howard will be finished LONG before me and my friend Marie (Jim's wife) will be sitting on a bench in the heat waiting for all of us.

Oh, and I meant to show you guys. These are the shoes I decided on for the reception. I think my feet will appreciate them 2 days post-halfmarathon.

[sorry it's so big! :confused3 ]

Cam - Love teh shoes!

Deb - SOunds liek pre-race jitters. WHile I dont; often follow my own advice, it's nice not to have a goal sometimes, as it's so disappointing when you don't make it, even though it's out of your control.

Jen - Happy Birthday!!!!

Jackie - :goodvibes

Betsy - Ugh, you're killing me with teh link. I think I want to tri just so I can get new clothes. ;)

Scott - Love teh reports!

Krista - OMG, you crack me up!

Amy - SOudns liek you have a good plan. WIll you be able to reign yourself in enough to stick to it? ;)

OK, ran 40 min last night. I wanted to run all day until it was time to change clothes. Ugh. Dh had his calf seize up on him Monday. He won't admit it, but I'm sure it's because he went too fast because I was not with him. ANyway, I tried a 5 min loop on a littel wooded trail. It was nice, but alittle hilly adn weird surfaces elevations. i think it will be good fro us to add, but my legs were jelly after 10 min in ther and I wasn't half-way through my workout. Then I realized Ihad no mp3. Ugh. A long 40 min, but I did it and didn't even think about the 10 min rules, so it was a victory.

On to intermediate yoga tonight. MUST get my schedule in order to get back to beginner.

:bday: Jen!!!

Boy, did I fit a lot in yesterday! Biking to/from work was awesome, plus I ran 4 mi over lunch. Rushed to the yoga studio after work for 1:30:00 of hot yoga. The instructor I had last night was intense! We worked hard poses and held them for a long time. Definitely a good class, but probably not the best on tired legs...

The legs felt pretty good on the commute into work today though! I may get a run in before boot camp, but I'll make the call after the bike home.

Cam...I love these shoes! How cute! I wore purple Nike's for my wedding! I was still recovering from a broken leg so I didn't really care about my shoes. No one saw them anyway under the dress. These shoes would have been perfect!!!

Did you end up signing up for the DL Half? Unfortunately, we are not going to be making that trip now (timing & some other plans got in the way), but that extra bling is gonna be sweet for sure!

Really? Say it aint so! I just realized this morning that the BF and I have tickets to see Ryan Adams and Oasis on Aug 30th, so I'm not sure if I want to miss that concert or not... Luckily I have not forked the dollars over to Disney just yet...

Good morning WISH teammates!

Cam - Love the shoes! They look so comfortable, yet stylish! Great choice.

Jen - Love the haircut! And Happy Birthday too! I have been slowly growing my hair a bit longer, but basically feel like I'm in a hair rut. Maybe it's time to change the color . . . hmmmm. . .

Scott - Thanks for the blog link. Your trip report is hilarious! Is it possible that you are considering the Philadelphia Distance Run now that you aren't going to DL? Join us!

Deb - Congratulations on the new apartment and have a great race this weekend! And the Jane Yolen connection to the ballet was very exciting - I'll pm you the details sometime over the weekend because it is pretty cool!

Welcome to the new WISHers and hello to everyone else!

I did a great 4.3 mile run on Tuesday, and am about to go out for 50 minutes this morning. I have also rededicated myself to core work and gotten the Pilates for Dummies tape - I haven't tried it yet, but I've watched it about halfway through. That looks like a real workout! I'm excited.

Thanks to everyone who gave input to me about adding some cross-training. I've been looking at the class schedule at my gym, and I think I'm going to try a Saturday morning indoor biking class. I'm a little intimidated by it, but in general my gym is really great so I think it will be fine. I really like to bike, but tend only to do it when I'm on vacation in Maine, so I think I will enjoy the class. If not, there are many other options.

I found my camera (thank goodness!) and have downloaded my ballet pictures. I don't have that many good ones, but I'll post a couple of the girls in the next day or two.

Bride Michelle: I NEVER think to look on ebay for DVDs, but will now thanks to you. It's the tyranny of the Netflix account and my need for immediate gratification. Great idea! (I won't search for Pilates for Dummies until after you score your copy, though; no need for a ridiculous bidding war.) I'm glad to hear you're pushing yourself but not overextending yourself, KWIM? I wouldn't want you to get injured. For me, the Pilates for Dummies helps me focus on my breathing. You wouldn't think I need to be reminded to do so, but apparently I do. I do think it's so great that you and your mom can do the running thing together. It's bound to create great memories for you both, just like the wedding! :goodvibes

Ebay is just great. I've really gotten into shopping there lately. I am finding so many great things for the wedding too. My crinny, my veil, shoe jewelry!!! Now I"m on the hunt for some bouquet jewelry!! Its a great place! So far I found a BUNCH of pilates tapes and DVDs on ebay!!! I'm eyeing a couple... I'm a bargain hunter, so I will only go after the absolute best deal I can find!!! I'm thinking of replacing the two tapes I gave to mom from my Winsor set, and Lo and Behold, I found an auction for the two very tapes I'm missing... and for 1.04 ;)!! score! But I say go for it and look on ebay, there are so many I'm sure we'll both get what we want!!! :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2 !

Unfortunately, since I moved away from my whole family about two years ago, (I live in CT and my family lives in NY) I rarely get to run with mom now. But I really enjoy when we do get to. I ran with her practically every day growing up, and it was really sad when I moved and didn't have my running buddy with me anymore. They are thinking of moving up here though, which would be FANTASTIC! :)
GOOD luck with the move!!!!! I HATE HATE HATE moving. I have moved at least once a year for the last six years, between going away to college, then moving off campus senior year, then moving into an apt with my bff after we graduated, then moving in with DF last summer. I think I'm done moving for a LONG time! :thumbsup2

Leana, I really enjoy when I can spend time like that with my mom. We really talk and listen to each other and it makes our relationship so strong! :cloud9:
Definintely sing up for the DL half!!! It will be amazing and so much fun:cutie:

Jen, Love the new hair cut!!! I want so badly to chop my hair off, but I have to keep it long for my wedding next year. I'm thinking after that though, CHOP CHOP! Then I'll miss it and wish it were long again! lol. Such a vicious cycle. you look Great!:cutie:

Not much new to report here, but i have a ton of work to do :headache: so I must be gettin on that. WHY does work get in the way of my life!?!! I can be doing so many other better things. :upsidedow

Happy Thursday, people!

I am sitting in my soon to be vacated empty office (boohoo!) while all my gear has been transferred into my new hovel, I mean cubicle. However, they are still painting and there are no printers and not enough outlets, so forget it--I'm staying put for now. Have laptop, will travel.

I've decided to train for a tri--haven't signed up for one yet, have to talk with DH (support team!), but he's currently in China. I have decided that the overall XT involved with tri will be better for me in the long run than excessive running, as proven by the fact that I had to cut only my secondpost-Minnie run short today bothered by left knee/quad/hip discomfort. Went and stretched and foam-rollered, so we'll see.

Amykab OOOOHHH, shandys! I had one recently on our vacation in Utah. So tasty

Scott Loving the trip reports. All these hidden bars/lounges at WDW. I will definitely have to scope out when I'm down in August. Would make a pleasant scavenger hunt--especially if WDW is the deisgnated driver!

Leana You are a fitness machine (and I mean that in a good way!)
I can't believe you would be intimidated by a triathlon.

Debra I will have to look up your new digs area. My DH is from Pittsburgh (Crafton) and his mom still lives there so we are back there periodically.

Everyone else--enjoy the day. I plan to eat more chocolate cake today (from DS 16th birthday. A boy after my own heart--chocolate cake with chocolate mousse and chocolate ganache)

Maura

Hi everyone! Cam directed me over here. I've decided that I want to try to do a race, and conveniently, Disney comes out with one for me. I'm going to try to do the Princess marathon in March. I'm not really sure about any details and I haven't run that much since HS, so I'm really looking for some advice, guidance and support. Cam said how great everyone is here, so I'm looking forward to getting to know everyone!

Megan

Megan - hello!! You've got plenty of time to train for the half...and the support you'll find here is incredible! Welcome to the team :goodvibes:

Maura - Love having WDW as the designated driver! Who knew that WDW could be such a great place for adults? :) I think the tri is a great idea!! And I agree that the best XT for runners is cycling (and swimming)...hope the leg discomfort works itself out for you!

Kira - thank you!! While the Philly Distance Run was initially right on the radar, I think we have a conflict that weekend...we may end up in Baltimore in October. I'd love to run in Philly someday though! You'll LOVE P4D, I've used it for over 6 months now and think it's a great workout!

Leana
- Yeah, DL is not gonna work out now :( trying to find a half in October to run in (any recommendations?)...sounds like a good concert! I had tickets to see Oasis twice in the heyday and they cancelled both times (stupid fighting brothers!) Read your blog...you've been working out like a manaiac!

Carrie - Why do I think of that 80's song by Europe each time I go to type your name? That happens to me a lot...I'll want to run all day and then crap out when it comes time to do it, or vice versa, i'll not be looking forward to it and it'll turn out great. So with that said, I'm not looking forward to working out tonight :rotfl:

amykab - Summer Shandy beer? Clue me in please :) Glad to see someone else out there "carb loads" during training :goodvibes:

Mel - I'm jealous. Running in Disney. I wanna go back!

Jackie
- Thanks for the kind compliments on my TR, I appreciate it! Glad to see you're digging the pilates..and yeah, it's sooo cool to see improvements so quickly! It's the one thing I love about it, you can always modify each exercise to challenge yourself more..it's such a fun workout. (now I have to add in my upper body weights)

Debra - I think you should just expand the queue to 7 out at a time, that way you can hang on to the dvd for life :) What flavor did you end up consuming last night? THANK YOU for the kind words about my writing, that was very nice of you to say. Good luck in Cleveland!! I sure hope the blisters stay away and that the race is a good one for you and DOOD. I'm looking forward to a Debra trip report!

Jen - "large volume of non-intelligent phone calls" :rotfl: I'm real sorry to hear about your mom though, sending best wishes to you guys.

Stacie - hey, time off is not a bad thing...especially after a big race like that. You'll come back strong and build a great base...I just know it!

Amy - Hope all is well in your world. It was fun reliving our trip through the report...thanks again for making WDW so much fun!

Scott's World - On the training front, I completed 6.2 miles last night...it was a nice run through the 'hood. It was the third run in a row for me without my mp3 player and I have to say I'm not missing it. I got so burned out on the music that was on there (and the lack of good new music), that I'm actually preferring to just run and think. Don't know how long that will last, but it's nice for the time being. On the non-training front, I'm finishing up the final thoughts on the TR and it will be up soon...as well as trying to finalize plans for the July shenanigans, and find a half to run in the October time frame since DL is now out of the picture.

I hope all is well with everyone!

Leana - Yeah, DL is not gonna work out now :( trying to find a half in October to run in (any recommendations?)...sounds like a good concert! I had tickets to see Oasis twice in the heyday and they cancelled both times (stupid fighting brothers!) Read your blog...you've been working out like a manaiac!

Scott - Definitely on my list to run one day is the Royal Victoria Marathon in British Columbia. Victoria is beautiful, and I've heard a lot of great things about this race. Not sure you would want to travel that far. I see a lot of those race shirts on the pathways here and they sure are nice!

The race is October 12. (Monday, October 13 is our Thanksgiving as an FYI though!)

http://www.royalvictoriamarathon.com/

Good luck finding a great race!

I have two remaining classes to complete my MBA!!! Tonight is my last Thursday class - EVER! Next Tuesday I need to turn in two papers, attend a presentation for Corporate Strategy and observe presentations in my last Wednesday night class - EVER! Then it is all OVER!! :cool1: :dance3: :cheer2: :yay: :woohoo: :rotfl:

I will still have to complete a Corporate Strategy final online (a 6 to 10 hour simulation), but other than that, I am DONE!!!

I commence on May 31!!!!:cool1:  :dance3: :cheer2: :yay: :cool1: :thumbsup2

I will be ready to join a running team, anyone looking for another member?

I will actually be joining a marathon training program in progress - training for the Marine Corps Marathon in October.

Look for me to be posting more in the upcoming weeks and years!

:grouphug:

Howard
