Wk of May 11 - WISH Walking/Running Club

Sadly, we no longer have a Haagen Daas near us either. I was hoping at least one WISHer did though!

The Smutty Nose 5k looks like fun. I just have to be careful that weekend. My work is sponsoring a Health & Fitness Expo in Boston that weekend. And they are bullying everyone into "volunteering" to work at it. I am going to play the my-husband-works-weekends-and-there's-no-day-care-on-weekends card to get out of it. And since Chad works alot of weekend hours, he will probably be over there working the Expo or covering back at the station for those that are at the Expo. So, I might not know until it gets closer if I could do this one. Gotta love the 'news station.'

Jen - we are going camping this weekend! I love hearing about your camping adventures. Three of us moms are going with the kiddos. We rented a cabin since it's going to be a wee bit cold in the white mountains in may in a tent. I dream about the day when we have a camper! We always camped growing up (and had a camper). I don't mind the tent, but it is much easier to have everything in the camper & ready to go.

Leana - yup - you better sign up!

Debra - good luck with the move! I always joke that we should move just so we have to clean out all the junk around here. Then again, I dread the idea.

Ok, I know I missed tons of people. I just wanted to try to respond a bit tonight since I had a 5 hour nap. :thumbsup2 Speaking of which, I better get back to bed so as not to lose all the benefits of the sleep I got today by staying up all night!

OK Team, as some of you may know my b-day is Thursday. Well I had to get my drivers license renewed and I HATE MY PICTURE. Like make me cry picture that I have to keep for the next 8 years.

So after work this is what I did.

I cut it all off. 3-4 inches of pony tail is now gone. DD7 got hers cut just as short (my mini me) and DD5 got a nice inch taken off. We are all rebels! Now my hair isn't styled in this pic, but you get the idea what a bad picture can do to someone!!!! DH says I look sporty now.

Jen, LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the new hair!!!

You look fabulous, 10 years younger!!

Hi All!

My second post on the Wish boards. My first was on the 5/4 thread. I really enjoy reading these, but I think I have to find some way to hook my computer up to the top of my treadmill!:rotfl: Finding time to READ and exercise can be a challenge.

I hope everyone recovers quickly from injuries and illness (although as new run/walker in training the number of people in pain seem a little scary

Weather permitting I'll run/walk my first 5K this Saturday. On Mother's day I got up and ran three miles in about 42 minutes. Not fast, but my goal at this point is just to be able to keep that 15 minute mile pace for longer and longer races. I stopped by today and picked up a couple books from the library on running. Looking primarily for general knowledge that might help me keep from getting injured.

Thanks for all who posted alternate ways to possibly get into the Half in Jan.
I'm checking into some of those, but I'm not sure I'll be ready for 13 miles by January. If things go well, I'm thinking I might try to the ToT in October, but its coordinating the travel schedule more than the training for that one. We're already schedule to be in WDW 10/30-11/5 - not sure I can swing a quick trip down the weekend before.

BTW, is there any abbreviation or term used for those someone like me who isn't really a runner, but maybe isn't really a walker either? ALthough, maybe with a 15 min mile pace I should just be trying to walk faster:)

Thanks also to all those who post suggestions and ideas for training. I guess I figured I would just start doing 3 miles every day, then 3.5, then 4. etc. All the while trying to keep that 15 minute mile pace. Looks like it might be better to do 3 daily, and only do longer distances a couple days a week. I usually do miss one day week because of work schedules.

Would love to be signed up for team.

Gotta "run"

I just have enought time to hopefully go do 3 miles before I have to pick up DD

I am new to WISH too! After completing my first 5k and 15K during Minnie Marathon weekend a couple weeks ago, I wanted to sign up for the half. Of course it is filled, but I was able to get on the childrens tumor foundation team. It is a 500 dollar fundraising commitment, which is really doable. All of the people I have chatted/emailed with have been super nice and supportive, just like everyone is here! :goodvibes :goodvibes

I am no expert, but when I was training for the 15K, I did 3 shorter run/walks during the week and built in one longer run on the weekends..I did 5 miles, then 6 miles, then worked up to 7 and 8 miles a few weeks before the race. I didn't do much crosstraining on non running days, which is important and I am trying to incorporate that into my half training.

It is weird, but once I hit the longer distances I found it to be easier and my times got better. it was like between miles 2 and 3, I would find my legs and just be able to go and maintain the pace or better.

Just my .02.

Jen - you look fabulous! I think the shorter length frames your face perfectly. :thumbsup2

Now, if I can find a new haircut, that would be awesome.
I think I have the same basic style (or non-style) since my junior year of high school!
Wait, there was a couple years where I grew out my bangs. But now they are back.

Debra

Congrats on the new place. I'm glad it worked out after all the stops and starts.

Jen

I like the hair as well. What's Paul's opinion of the change?

I've been totally out of the loop, sorry, end of semester WTO. I hope to return to semi-human life form in a few days.

Best
Craig

FYI Craig - He LOVES it. He was so happy to see the boring pony tail gone. The whole haircut was his idea. He said I needed a change and a haircut is a cheap and easy way to change (the stress in my life brings me down). Paul was actually surprised I went through with it. He said I look all sporty (and a little oohh la la).

Great picture Jen. The short hair looks great. Happy Birthday coming up!!!

Jen: I like the new dooooo! I recently cut about 3 inches off mine for the summer. I still have the "pony" but my criteria when I got it cut was that when I have it up in a pony it doesn't touch my neck too much. That way when I'm sweating the hair isn't sticking to my sweaty neck. I know that sounds gross, but that is very important to me. Happy PRE-BIRTHDAY!!!!

Hi, WISHers!

Quick drive-by here...been a hectic week.

Jen--love the haircut!

Deb--congrats on finding a place to move (for now)!

Maura, Leana, etc...tri transitions are not difficult. :goodvibes And as to what to wear, I just wear tri-shorts (sortof like bike shorts--but the pad is thinner, so you still have the comfort on the bike but it's not bulky and dries quickly) and a jog bra the whole time, and sometimes add a singlet top over the jogbra. I love triathlon, so please feel free to ask if you have any questions! :cheer2:

Me: I got off of my Jillian fitness plan over the weekend. I totally needed to add in some carbs before my triathlon because I was feeling sluggish. It helped (see RR thread)! Then it took me until after hanging with my family on Mother's Day to clean my diet back up. :) So I put on a couple of the pounds I lost. Will be good for another couple of days but am not dieting at Disney this coming weekend! Doing the triathlon out there, and hope it will be a decent day. The run will be not fast, as I haven't been back to running but a couple of weeks. But it should be a good time!

Jen - Love teh nwe hair! Know what makes it lok best? You look happy in it!!! :wizard: :wizard: :wizard: for your marathon weekend schedule!

Rpsemont - I highly recommend Marthoning for Mortals by John Bingham. There are trainign schedule in tehre. he recommends you do 3 to 4 runs per week, only one of tehm longer than an hour per week. (max at peak training). Then, 2 to 3 XT days. Also you need at least 1, if nto 2, rest days per week to let your muscles heal. All of teh nwe runners I can think of who did mroe than that at teh atsrt of thier runing, ended up injuerd from over training. Please be careful with yourself! BTW, you can use r/w or w/r for combining run adn walk. It's not neccessary, though. I always say run, because that's what I do. However, when I say it, I mean run, walk or any combo thereof. None of us care about the details liek taht. :goodvibes

Jackie - Holy cow! You were smokin'! Yup, we slowed down with teh full run too. We just have a hard time starting to run if we walk, so we still do al run. :confused3

Tracy - Glad oyou could get a walk in!

Debra - rotfl! I realy do love my parents adn they make the trek each year to watch us run teh marathon. However, as I woke up a half hour late today (still don't knwo what happened to y alarm)and was trying to race out the dorr, I wanted to shoot them. ;) COngrats on findign a place. Good luck with a more permanent one!!!

Craig - Hope you can come back to us more often soon!

Leana - ROTFL! I think you have to do DL now! ;)

MBMichelle - Isn't it great when you really miss your work outs? Glad you could get it in!

OK, need to go to bed. My sense of tiem is so out of whack.

Jen - Love your hair, it's the perfect length for your face. Looks great!:)

Training report:

Okay, I tried the Eye2Eye shirt for a 6 miler today, at a 9 minute pace. The shirt material does not wick sweat away like a dry fit shirt. I was soaking wet my 2 miles, and I was drenched by the end of 6. I prefer the Race Ready shirt material, and will stick to that shirt for racing in. Eye2Eye will be used for WISH meets and walking around the parks, but not for running in. My friends liked the design of the shirt, and everyone liked the WISH slogan on the back.

Haagen Daas was great. My reputation must have preceded me, because when I walked up to the counter, the girl handed me two cups and said Enjoy! So I did :rotfl2:. So, for anyone who didn't get to their local shop, I had a scoop for you. Honey Vanilla, pretty good stuff. We met and talked to a big wig manager out from Florida to promo the new flavor. Gave him big props for taking care of my running group.

Have a great Wednesday team.

Good Morning Team: yesterday I ran 5 miles in 43:52 min/8:48 mpm! I felt great, and afterwards DD7 pooh: was home waiting for me to go for a bike ride. So we rode another 3 miles around the neighborhood. Great day!

OriginalBill - OMG! How nerve-wracking for you guys. How can you train in all that smoke?

Train, who said anything about training. :lmao: This is a great reason to stay home in the recliner watching whatever season finales are on. ;) Although there have been times that you just go out and run, just much slower since all you breathe is smoke.

Bill

Hi Everyone!

Thanks for all the thoughts. The Doctor has ordered a slew of tests so now the can of worms is open. However, since I am relatively healthy, all my tests get bumped for sick people so it could be weeks before I get them all done. Not that I am in any hurry for that 8 hour blood sugar test!

Jeff - Sorry to hear the eye2eye shirt isn't so good at wicking. I think we should stick with our tried and true vendors for our race shirts.

Jen - Nice hair cut. I also cut off my ponytail this spring, but mine doesn't look near as good as yours.

although as new run/walker in training the number of people in pain seem a little scary

Looking primarily for general knowledge that might help me keep from getting injured.

Thanks for all who posted alternate ways to possibly get into the Half in Jan.

Welcome!

You will quickly find that runners and walkers alike are alittle um paranoid. We get alarmed at any little ache or pain that flares up. This is good because most of the time, a little REST can prevent serious injury. Thats not to say that we don't have some real injuries, we do. Also, we also have some people here that are working to overcome some serious health issues that aren't running related.
I second the recommendation of Marathoning for Mortals by John Bingham. Its got some great plans that would definately get you ready for the half by January.
And if you are attempting to run, you are a runner. We have a whole bunch of dedicated walkers that will tell you that someone that does a run/walk is a runner not a walker. A few refer to their exercise as a "wog." I think "wun" is more appropriate because it sounds successful.

Cecilia

Just a quickie shout-out to all my WISH buddies and a big :thumbsup2 for Jen's new haircut!

Good morning, Wish team!!!

Jen--I LOVE your hair!!!! You look fabulous! I've been thinking of cutting my hair into a pixie cut ala Amy Beth, but there's no way I could look as cute as she does and I'm scared to do it!!! I'm glad that Paul loves it too. I know it's your hair and all, but it's nice when your husband likes it too. Sending you :wizard: that the marathon plans work out in January!!! And in case I don't make it on here tomorrow, Happy Birthday!!!!!

Carrie--   Glad you had a nice time with your parents, but I know you are happy to be heading home!!! Tell Scott Stephen and I said !

Rpsemont --:welcome: Here's another vote for Marathoning for Mortals and John Bingham's training plans. I've used his plans for 1 full and 3 half-marathons. I used Hal Higdon's plan for one half and for me personally, I like JB better. You can absolutely start training now and be ready for a half in January. I started training for my first half in May 2005, at that point I did not run at all. I started out walking 2 miles a day and then I think 3 or 4 miles on Saturday. I did that from May-July. After that I started JB's walk 1/2 program, I think I did that for maybe 6 weeks, then switched to the walk/run 1/2 program for the remaining weeks until official 1/2 training started in October, I followed his run/walk 1/2 program for 14 weeks. I ran my first 1/2 marathon in January 2006, finished in 2:41 and since then I have run 4 1/2 marathons (with a PR of 2:27) and 1 full. Good luck!!! I know you can do it!

Debra--Congrats on the new apartment!!! When do you move? Are you still in the Squirrel Hill area? When do you and DOOD leave for Cleveland? Can't wait to read your RR!!!! Good luck!

Duckie--Good luck on the baby plan!!! Here's my piece of advice for you: remember that they will come on their own time, don't get stressed out if you don't get pregnant the first month or two or three or four. And from me personally, don't start trying until you are absolutely ready to be pregnant, sometimes they come a lot sooner than you are expecting!! A little TMI, but Stephen and I were planning on a late fall/early winter baby and we got the dead of summer. ;)

Scott--Carter is doing fine, I think I not only have a little swimmer, but also a rocker in here. He moves a lot whenever a Foo Fighters song is on and this morning I felt quite a few kicks when "Handlebars" was on the radio. But nothing for Green Day. As a huge Green Day fan, that makes me :sad2:.

Amy--I can't believe you think your schedule is easy!!! Mama Mia!! Are you leaving room for resting??? My due date is 8/12, I'm hoping for 8/8 (wouldn't 8/8/08 be the coolest??) or 8/7, Carter is named after my grandpa who was born on 8/7, so I think that would be neat too. :)

Kristi--I hear ya on having no motivation without an event scheduled. I know we have WDW in January, but that's far, plus I know I'm going to lose everything once the baby is born and after, so why try now?? ;) Are you still looking for a new job?

Cecilia--:wizard: for all those tests!!!! I hope the doctor is able to give you some answers. Are you able to keep running?

Jackie--Great splits!!! Glad the shoes are working out for you. I've found that I can do a r/w faster than a straight run too, that's why I've been sticking with it.

Leana--Have fun in DL!!!! :thumbsup2

Cam, Carrie, Judy--Stephen says I'm supposed to tell you that I'm wearing my heels today. :sad2: But in my defense heels looked so much better with my capri's then flats did, I sit at a desk most of the day, and I did bring a pair of flats in case my feet or back start hurting. :thumbsup2

AI Watchers--How awesome was David Cook last night????? :worship: :worship: :worship: :worship: I hope all 3 songs are available on itunes, I want them all!! I tried on and off for 2 hours to vote for him and only got through once.

And for me, hmm, well, I've found that I have zero motivation right now, I'm hoping this is a pregnancy thing and not a lazy thing! I've been trying to get my mojo back, it's not looking good though!

Krista

Krista - Glad Stephen's lookign out for you. WIsh you would listenbetter. Tsk. Tsk. You know how I feel about heels under normal circumstances..... ;) :goodvibes
