Wk of Mar 25--WISH Walking/Running Club

Hey guys! Good to see the thread’s still on page 2 today so that I can actually keep up!

Mel—ohhh! The Balega socks. Those things are great! Krista has been talking them up all spring, so I finally got a few pair. You’re right, they are THE best. Great job on the 5 miler!

Andrew—isn’t it great to finish a run in the pouring rain? You feel like such a dedicated running purist. :thumbsup2 Nice job on getting out there in those conditions.

Kristin—good job on the 7 miler! Must have been a real mental boost to finish under the circumstances.

Dave—great job with the 14 miles! Be careful out there, k? Don’t you go getting injured on me and leave me to do the Pig by myself. Funny, it looks like we’re swapping weekends for races/training miles. I have a 14 miler next weekend instead of the 15K you’re running. By the way, good luck in that race!

Jen—way to go on the 10K! Pretty impressive time considering you hadn’t gotten a chance to get the miles in lately. I would have freaked out at the snakes, too.

Jeanne—great news about the foot pain. And wow, 12 miles after that? Nice job!

Laurie—congrats on the 7 miler—and great pace!

Kristi—sounds like an awesome concert! I would have been hacked at security in that situation, too. Cool that you got the guitar picks! Good luck with the 10 miler today.

Vic—good job with the 5 miles. You think 80 degrees is beautiful weather for a run??? You crazy Florida people….. :sad2:

Well, the 15K Heart Mini Marathon this morning went great. Somewhere around 12,000 runners, which surprised me. I guess I didn’t realize how big of an event it was. I was still undecided as I got to the race this morning what I would do as far as pace. I was just planning to do a nice, easy training run and enjoy the fellow runners and spectators, but alas, when the starting gun went off, I decided to push the pace a little (funny how a starter pistol can do that to you, huh? :confused3 ). I had never done a 15K race before, and the distance is still a hard one for me to grasp. It’s not short enough to push all out like a 5k or 10K, but it just feels a lot shorter than a half marathon. Although it really can be misleading. 9.3 miles is no little measly distance. I saw several people start out way too fast and fade by mile 5 or so. Could have been the heat (75 degrees or so) or the hills, but I think a lot of people underestimated the distance.
Anyway, long story short, I ended up finishing in 1:18:46 for an 8:27 pace. I felt good about that. Probably should have taken it a little easier since it was just supposed to be a training run, but the good thing is that I felt like I could have pushed it harder if I had needed to. And I’m now officially in spring race mode—you know how that first big event of the season goes? The Pig can’t get here quick enough!

Unfortunately, I should probably go check on the laundry now. Krista will kill me if she ends up having to do ALL the laundry by herself today. Although all the steps she can get in with her new shoe inserts will help her out when she takes them out on the road for a run, right? I’m guessing she won’t buy that logic. ;)

Hope everyone is having a great weekend and enjoying the spring weather (except Monte, who can still ski out her front door this time of year :) ). Talk to you guys later!

Steve

Edit to above race post, official results got posted and they had me at 51:37, a PR by 28 seconds. That's what my Garmin had me at for 6.2, so I'll take it even though it had me at 52:20 when I crossed the line at 6.27. The race clock said 52:35 or so I thought, so dunno if they had it off by a minute or what... 756th place out of 3003 finishers..., but still only 54th in my age division lol

Way to go Steve!

So let me tell you guys about my $255.00 spigot. That's right, $255.00. :sad2:

Our house was built in 1978, and the spigots (as well as other items) are original equipment.

This particular spigot has been leaking for a while, but I could always crank on the valve and get it to stop. So, this morning after returning from my run I watered the plants and then proceeded to turn the spigot off. I cranked on the valve and wouldn't yo know it, it broke. I now have water shooting out of the spigot from two different locations. The swearing begins.

So, I decided now would be a good time to change it out. I get my tools, the new spigot I bought, go to the street and turn the water off, and then get to work.

Do you think I could get that sucker off? Noooooooooooooo!! Even using the tried and true technical procedure of banging on it with a wrench and swearing didn't work. Sorry (insert swearing here) spigot!

Now the last thing I wanted to do was to call a plumber on a Sunday, but the dang thing wouldn't budge. So, I call Roto Rooter, tell them my problem, and they said they'd be right out.

Out comes Jim the plumber. I tell him my problem, he looks at it and tells me the reason I couldn't get it off is because it's been sweated on (a procedure used in the 70s and 80s). He also told me I was lucky I didn't twist the pipe off. I guess my common sense was working today.

Reminds me of the Andy Griffith episode when Aunt Bee bought the freezer, and it broke. "Aunt Bee, call the man!" :happytv:

Jim takes care of my problem. I pay him a portion of my hard earned money (Insert more swear words here), and off he goes.

It's a pretty spigot though. :)

Way to go Steve!

So let me tell you guys about my $255.00 spigot. That's right, $255.00. :sad2:

Mine is better. Last year our shower was leaking. I figured out what the problem was and got the part. I shut the water off on the side of the house where you are supposed to and figured everything was good. The shower was fixed in under 10 minutes and I went to turn the water back on. The valve turned but no water appeared. Yep the valve broke closed. Lynnda was not too happy. I called a plumber the next day and got the valve replaced.

Now you would have thought I learned something from that. :rolleyes1 The next day, I was going to replace a heating element in the hot water heater and turned the valve off next to the water heater so I could drain part of it. That part went in quickly as well and I went to turn on the water. Once again that valve broke off as well. I decided that it wasn't worth calling the plumber back (it was a weekend) so I figured I could solder it just as well as they could. Lynnda was panicking thinking we would never have hot water again. However it actually worked and I replaced all the other valves that were that style.

The moral of that is never use the gate valves on the main water lines to the house. Apparently they are the cheapest so that is what builders use but the break very easily due to mineral/junk buildup in the water. Lynnda still worries when I go and try to fix something but I haven't had any more problems. :rolleyes1

Hi Everyone-

I finished my half marathon today. I am excited about my time of 2:11 - pretty good since my training was derailed by injuries. I think I could have finished much better had I made the earlier MARTA train and gotten to the race on time. That and the facts that there was a line for every single porta potty and you had to stop and fight for water at all but one of the water stops

Here is the fun part: I finished my half RIGHT in front of the marathon winner.
I bet he'll be in my finish pictures. I beat the Kenyans! (ok so he ran twice as far as I did....)

Last night as I was trying to sleep, I realized the elite marathoners would be passing the half marathoners. I worried about this all night. You know those late night, last minute, insane worries? that was mine. So it was even better that I beat them!

The ING Georgia is going to be one of the stand out spring marathons in a year or two. They have some kinks to work out, but the main thing it has is an unbelievably beautiful race course. Everyone left happy and raving about the race even with the horrible water stops and chaotic start and finish.

So I am going to take a few days off and then start gearing up for The Country Music on April 28th.

Have a beautiful day everyone!
Cecilia

Cecilia & Steve - great job on your races!

Well, my 10 miler was a 5 miler. My asthma was acting up, I was tired and I just plain wasn't there. I had to do alot of mind games to get myself to mile 5. I am a little bummed about it. But at the same time, it's fine. This plan calls for no real taper & my half is next Sunday. I don't want to go all out, feeling crappy & then have a bad race next week.

I am beat. Heading to bed early tonight to rest up for Justin Timberlake & Pink tomorrow night! :dance3:

Vic - DId I ever mention that we had to replace teh faucet on teh main floor kitchen sink because we were re-doing teh upstairs bathroom? ;) Yup, I understand. What a bummer! (We woudl have ruined the pipe, though!

VIc - COngratulaions!

Steve - Way to go!!! (I doubt Krista will kill you about the laundry, ut if she's like me, she'll REALLY appreciate your help!) Funny, I think that's where the 9.3 will be good for me. I do at 5 or 10k not much faster than a marathon. It should eb a good 15k pace, though. :p

Dave - 14-miler? WOw. Way to go. If you find an answer for that booty pain (that won't get anyone in trouble ;) ), let me know. Mine goes all the way to my heel.

Cecelia - SO, why we're "all Kenyans at heart", lol, yuo're actually better than the Kenyans. Wow! :D Way to go!

Bill - lol. Let Lynnda know tha thot water fro a time is better than no heat during the coldest Feb. on record for 3 days. Yup, been there. Can't believe the marriage survived that one. ;)

Kristi - That 10-miler does seem odd. I'm sure you'll be fine, thogh. Not like 10 miles is really new ot your body.

Laurie - Way to go!!!!! Those first-time LRs feel like such a great accomplishment! (And they are.)

Nancy & Kristin - Hanigng in there when your legs is sooo hard. Yuo neeed that come race day, though. Grat job fro hanging in there.

Jeanne - WOo hoo on the foot pain!!!

Martha - I am so sorry. That is incredibly sad. His familiy will wonder why for the rest of their lives. :grouphug:

GAJen - Good job on your finish!!! HAvign lessons learned even when you were pleased is really good. It sounds liek youlearned one of the biggest rules. You need to do what YOU need to do. Only you know what's right for you. You know how many people would have looked at your water adn thought you were so much better than them? :p

Tiff - Sounds liek a lot of XT! ;) Better hit the pavement soon, though with teh Minnie coming up! :D

I did about 1.5 hours of XT by power-raking and weeding today. 75 degress!!!!!!! WHo could satay in side??? I'm sore now, though. :cool1: :cool1:

Sounds like everyone had a great day of training/racing!

Kristi---Sounds like you had a great time at the concert! Glad you didn't need the bail fund!

Matt--WOW! That is some week of working out! Glad to hear you found a plan that works for you!

Steve--Great job on the race today!! Awesome pace!

Vic--a $255 spigot..ouch! I can't believe a stinking spigot could cost that much. Glad to hear you were able to get it fixed today. So, how do you like the new Car of Tomorrow?? I am not a big fan yet. Maybe I will change my mind next week, DBF and I are heading to Martinsville for the race, maybe the COT will grow on me in person! At least Dale Jr. had a decent race today, even though he didn't really like his car!

Cecilia--Great job on your race today! Sounds like you had a great time despite some of the kinks.

Carrie---power weeding and raking...definetely XT!!! Anything to get out in the beautiful weather!!

Steve - Great job on the 15K! Yeah, it did feel great to finish in the rain! And I could just imagine DW Darcey's reaction if I told her doing laundry would help her break in new shoes. The DIS would be one less WISHer!
Matt - WOO HOO! :thumbsup2 for breaking your PR!
Vic - Now you just want to introduce that old spigot to Mr. Sledgehammer.
Cecilia - Fantastic job on the Half!
Kristi - Good job on getting out there and making 5 miles. I know it wasn't what was planned for, but it seems you made the wise decision. Your gonna have a kick a$@ race next week!
Carrie - For your XT did you do supersets? Three weeds followed immediately with three passes of the rake, rest then repeat for 3 sets? And, yes, it is too nice to stay inside!

Went for a brisk 4.5 mile walk with my DW. Sunny and breezy here in Davenport today with a high in the mid 70's!

Kristi---Sounds like you had a great time at the concert! Glad you didn't need the bail fund!
Not so fast - keep the bail fund! The Goos are playing next month at Lincoln Park in RI.
AND, it's a trip with my 'NH Goo Girls' - watch out! They are maybe even worse than me! :scared1:

Hi everyone - hope everyone had a nice weekend.

I got my scheduled 2 miler in yesterday in 22:50 for an 11:25 min/mi pace. It was such a nice day outside. I was running in long pants and a long sleeve shirt and I think I may have been a tad overdressed. Not bad for March in Calgary! The temps look like they drop off a bit this week, but hopefully we will stay firmly entrenched in spring. Today I got in 55 min of aerobics for cross training. Tomorrow is a stretch & strengthen day so I'll probably do some weights.

Craig and Steve - Thanks for the great ideas for how to handle the long runs when it is just too cold to head outside. I'll definitely keep your tips in mind when I get there!
Mel - Congrats on your great run!
Andrew - Way to go on getting your 3 miler in, but too bad about the rain!
TxAng - Good luck getting your office reorganized, and getting back into your training for your first 5K. Remember it is your first race, and the objective is to have fun and not concentrate on how you do. You are doing great for making the commitment!
Rosy - Great weekend workout, but I hope everything is OK in your part of Japan.
disnutt - I'm glad the HRM is working for you. Hope your 6 miler went well!
Dave - Great run! I hope you get your booty pain sorted out.
hoosmi - Awesome job on your 10K swamp run! I'm not sure how I would have felt about passing a couple of dead snakes, it probably would have made me run faster too! See you at the Minnie in a few weeks.
Martha - How terrible for your neighbors. What a shock. My thoughts go out to his family.
Nancy - Sorry about your stonker 4 miler. Hopefully it will be better the next time you get out there!
jeanneg - I am glad to hear your foot pain is gone! I'm so glad you are thinking about the full. You sound so far ahead in your training I know you can do it! You mentioned that if you fail at it, then at least you tried. Now, now - I'm sure you won't fail - keep your great, positive attitude!
Laurie - Excellent job on your 7 miler, what a great pace.
Kristi - It sounds like a great GGD show! One day I really hope to catch them live.
Matt - Wow, what a great week. Congrats on your PR and your long bike rides.
Vic - Good job on your 5 miler. The weather sounds great down there! That is a mighty expensive spigot though!
Steve - Congrats on your 15K race today! What a great pace. My cousin and her husband live in Florence, KY and ran the same race as well. She is training for the half Pig and ran Goofy this past January.
Cecilia - Way to go on beating the Kenyans!! Congratulations on a great race. Gotta love all the freebies at the expo too. I can't wait to hit my first big expo.
Kristi - Sorry to hear your 5 miler was a tough one. It was probably a good idea to keep it short though so you aren't worn out for your half next weekend. Good luck!!

OK, I think I just about got everyone, but if I missed you then sorry! Time to finish making dinner. Enjoy the rest of the weekend!

Hello everyone!!

Just got back from first long run in about 6 weeks. It was only 7 miles which feels wierd calling a long run after the 13 milers we were doing a couple of months a go. This is the first time I did a "long run" by myself, DH is having trouble with his back!! and he is my pacer so I knew I was in trouble. I think I need to get me one of those Garmin gadgets. The short story is I tried to do way!! too much tooo fast, but I survived and I bet I am stronger for it.

Anyway the breakdown is:

first 2.5 miles - 20 minutes - 8 minute pace :cool1: :cool1:

Oh don't celebrate too quick - you know there is trouble coming:
did I mention that it was 85 today and I did an hour of wieghts and a 4 miler yesterday -- anyway:

middle 2 miles 10 minute pace - yes my head felt like it was going to explode :scared1: - VERY HOT!! :cool2:

last 2.5 about 9:45 pace

Moral of the story - JUST GO SLOW IN THE BEGINNING - funny that was DH's last words before I left the house - WHEN WILL I LISTEN!!:confused3

Ok I am now going to attemp to catch up with everyone. I don't know how much I will be able to keep up this week, I will spending Wednesday to Sunday on the deck of an aircraft carrier, on a project having to do with school !! :) Very Cool ! BUT WHEN WILL I RUN!!

angie

Way to go Steve and Cecilia. Coming in with a nice half marathon time, and being there simultaneously with the full marathon winner reinforces how fast the true elites are.

Kristi, some days it just isn't there. Good for you getting to 5 and then having the sense to step off. Some days you eat the bear and some days the bear eats you. But always dress for the hunt.

Craig

Hey all, not much to report from me. I went shopping yesterday with the family, so the 6 miler had to wait until today. I did pretty much all of my training runs after 6 miles on the indoor track for the WDW 1/2. I am just getting used to running outside again, and also how the Garmin tracks my pace. With the indoor track, I just count laps and press the Split button on my watch. Well, I still haven't figured out the splits on the Garmin, but it is tracking me at a slower pace.... which is making me very frustrated!!

So today I did my 6 miles, wandering aimlessly through neighborhoods. I can do that now that I have my Garmin. I finished my VERY SLOW 6 miles in 77 minutes. I was nauseaus during a lot of the run, I think I ate too close to running and it didn't settle well.

I want to congratulate everyone that had races this weekend!!!! I am doing a Midnight 5K next weekend with DH... first for him.

Cecilia - Just believe that you are faster than the Kenyans. You have pics to prove it!! :lmao:

Kristi - I almost bagged it 1/2way through my run. You have a great base for your race and have been showing some impressive times. I too deal with the asthma thing. I know the spring pollen and junk will only make it worse. Good Luck to you!

Vic - YIKES!!! Just want to let you know, that is something that would happen to my DH! Your not alone!

Matt - Because of your post, I was checking out my breathing as I ran. I have asthma, so I think my breathing is way heavier than most people. But I was checking out the number of foot strikes between breathes.

OK, I am off to check out some recipes. I will post any that I find. I think my nutrition is a little off lately and that could be why I am groggy and slacky. I need to eat less junk!

Oh to start off - THE BEACH WAS GLORIOUS, THANKS EVERYONE FOR ASKING!! :rotfl2:

MEL - Great run yesterday!! The heat is kicking my but, so :worship:
TXANG - I wish we had an IKEA down here!! I'm sorry you have not had any time to train, believe me I KNOW how frustrating that is. Here's pixiedust: hoping that you find more time. And you are always WORTHY we have all been there.
disnutt - Awesome run!!
Dave - Good job on the long run!!!!
Martha - I am soooo sorry about your neighbor's son. The family will be in my prayers, and thanks for reminding me to love on my babys !!
hoosmi - Thanks for the tips and I would not be too ashamed of that time if you feel like you did not train like you could have.
Nancy - I hate the cement leg feeling, I hope your next run goes better.
jeanneg - I'm glad your pain is gone and good job on taking minutes off your time!! I love that feeling.
Laurie - :cheer2: on the long run. It makes it so much better when you feel good the whole time!! (not crawl to the door like I did tonight :rotfl: )
Matt - Awesome training week, I am tired just reading it!!
Steve - Good job on the race :cool1: I would give anything to have that time at the minnie but I don't know if I will have enough time to work up to that before then. Again good job!! it's very motivating.
Vic - Good job on the run and I am so sorry about the spigot  or congratulations on the new one!!
Cecilia -:cool1: Congratulations on the 1/2 that is AWESOME time!!! We actually contemplated doing that one, maybe next year!!
Kristi - Sorry about your run, but the concert sure sounds like a lot of fun!!!! :yay:
Carrie - Awesome XT I keep telling myself that even though I won't be able to run much this week, erecting a 5000 square foot steel structure for 4 days counts as XT

Ok hopefully I did not miss anyone!!

Happy training
angie

Steve--Great race!!!:cool1: The 15K is an odd distance to run for a race--the one I did in Feb. I just treated as a training run--but then that darn 30mph headwind screwed everything up! Looking to make a PR at Minnie--pray for no wind!!!

Angie--I need someone to run with me to pace me--even with my Garmin, my splits can sometimes be all over the place. wow, on running in that heat--guess I"ll need to get up early when we're down there on vacation to get a run in, so I don't melt!!

Cecilia--WTG on beating the Kenyans!!!!;) Great time on the 1/2!

Vic--Eeekk on the spigot!:scared1:

Kristi--Have fun at the concert--too bad about the run, but some days are just like that (believe me, I've had them)

I walked 4 miles today for my x-training--that and sitting through 3 web seminars:surfweb: --UGH! Hope everyone had a great weekend! And here's hoping everyone has a great start to the week!:thumbsup2

Hey everyone,

Thanks for your concern but no need to worry, I'm fine and I'm pretty far away from where the earthquake took place. I believe it was on mainland Japan and I'm actually located on a little island a couple hundred miles south of the mainland. We occasionally feel the tremors of the quakes but I didn't this time. The only real weather I have to worry about is typhoons and tyhpoon season is right around the corner...I'm just hoping they won't interfere with my training. The base goes on lockdown when the winds reach certain speeds and we aren't allowed out of our homes. It's actually kind of fun at times but sometimes it's an inconvenience.

Congrats to all you racers on your awesome times...I'm so jealous of all the races you all have nearby. I know there are some on occasion here but nowhere near the variety you have there and they seem to be more sporadic. Oh well, I just continue on my own plan.

Kristin

Good Morning TEAM: :surfweb:

Rest day for me yesterday, I did do 1.6 miles with the princesses, DD6 princess: and DD9 princess:, for their 5K training. We went to the high school track to run on a cushy surface. My left booty/lower back still hurts. I iced it, and took lots of ibuprofen. I'm not sure what I did to it. I think I may take another rest day today, or switch my run to a swog/deep water run.

Yesterday was a semi-rest day for me. No planned exercising but instead many trips up to the attic to find things.

I can't believe that this is up to page 3 on Monday.

Mel - Great job with your times. Good luck trying to find something that works well before your runs. I still think Diet Coke and a snickers is perfectly acceptable. ;)

Andrew - Great job on getting out when the weather was bad. Good luck in preparing for your 5k next month.

TxAng - Good luck with your office reorganization. Our house is in a similar state right now. It can be quite frustrating when you just want to snap your fingers and have it done immediately.

Rosy - Good job on the training runs. Congrats on doing the "deep cleaning" on your house. Let me know when you are done and I can volunteer another house to help keep you in practice. :lmao:

disnutt - Great job on hitting 20 miles last week.

Dave - Great job with those times. Hope you figure out what is causing the pain.

Jen from Ga - Great job on getting out and doing the races. I hope the colds have finally stopped. I have a feeling if I saw some snakes on the trail, my pace would go up very quickly. Of course Lynnda would just jump on my back and have me carry her out of the area. :rolleyes1

Martha - Sorry to hear about your neighbor. Hope you can find something to help them out with.

Nancy - Great job in doing your training. Hope your next session lets you feel a little better.

jeanneg - Congrats on the foot pain being gone and for knowing what caused it. :thumbsup2 Good job on the walk as well.

Laurie - Great job on your run. That is a great pace to keep.

Kristi - Glad you had a good time at the concert. Hope you are feeling better. Sorry to hear about your shortened run.

Matt - Great job last week on the training and for beating your PR. By the way, after looking at your pictures, it appears that running has had a dramatic impact on your height. I guess that since feet get bigger during runs, spinal height shrinks a little. ;)

Vic - Glad you were able to get out yesterday and it felt good.

Carrie - Glad you were able to get outside yesterday. Although yardwork is probably not what I would have liked to do.

Leana - Glad to hear that things are getting better up North. Great job on your time.

Angie - Glad you were able to get out for your long run. Those are still great split times although it is a great excuse to buy a Garmin. ;)

Jen - Glad to hear you are able to get outside again. Thanks for all the recipes that you have been posting. Now we just have to either make sure our crock pot really works or just get a new one.

Stephanie - Sitting through 3 seminars, that sounds more like torture instead of cross training. :rotfl2: Glad you were able to get a walk in there as well.

Steve - Great job on the race. That is a great time for that distance. Hope you were able to help with the laundry since it would be bad to lose one of the few guys on the Wish team. :rotfl:

Cecilia - Great job on your half marathon. Glad it was a good race. Just think, every time they show the winner you will be in the shot. We can have a Wish celebrity in our midst.

Bill
