Wk of Mar 16 - WISH Walking/Running Club

I just thought I'd post a PSA here for those doing the Minnie who haven't visited that thread in a while. There is a poll for where we want to meet. Don't forget to post your opinion on the Minnie Marathon WISH Meet.

Hey everyone!

Nice tattoo Mel, where is it located? (I'm sorry if you already said, I probably missed it) I'm a huge fan of tattoos, so I'm always curious about placement/meaning. I need to finish the tattoo on my foot and start my other foot, but if I do that I won't be able to run :(

Speaking of running, I had my best run ever on Friday. I ran 3 miles in 44:25! :cool1: Might not be too big of an accomplishment, but I just started running a few weeks ago and I normally average 20-ish minutes per mile. I was pretty happy about it and looked a little like this guy:  when I checked my time when I was done.

MARTA is fully functional downtown right now, including Peachtree Center (the stop you'd take if going to the aquarium)

With the aquarium exit being so close to 75/85, getting in and out of there is very simple and there are no roads closed where you would be traveling...so you can either drive or take MARTA without any holdups :goodvibes:

Thanks Scott! I HATE parking my Boat (aka SUV) in those parking garages, so I think I'll take MARTA! Plus the kids love riding it. :confused3 (not that great for me, but it is efficient transportation)

And to start off, I have a bizarro question (but maybe not as bizarre as the request for a picture of port-o-potty city, and you guys came up with those in no time flat). Does anyone remember any of the messages on the Sharpie signs along the race route? The only ones I can recall are "How deep would the ocean be if it didn't have all those sponges" and "I drive way too fast to worry about my cholesterol." I remember seeing a photo someone posted about drunk ants always falling to the left, and that cracked up my kids, who have now been badgering me about what other pearls of wisdom there were, and my not-so-young brain is drawing a blank. So if anyone has any they remember, I would be grateful (and I might get a moment's peace from my sons).

One gave the number of times Kramer burst through Jerry Seinfeld's door in 9 seasons. I think it was 252 times, but not sure.

You forget 68% of what you read by the end of the day.

Someone posted a bunch in a thread somewhere in the marathon race reports. I saw it after getting back from the Goofy. So check the January/February posts.

I have to find the link somewhere in my bookmarks. There was a guy who tatooed the Mickey 15th Anniversary Logo on his calf. I'll post it when I find it.

FYI- If you don't want the Girl Scout Cookies, you can make a donation to the Operation Girl Scout Cookies Campaign. The local council will ship cookies to service men and women overseas, usually with a note or drawing from a Girl Scout.

I'm still watching Chi Running DVD, and promise to get it on to the next person's hands soon. (Traveling library).

For those that missed it...I just have to share...

So...I got home Friday from work and as I walk in the house, there is a gift bag. Inside is a note. It's a plain white piece of paper from DH and it says something to the effect of how proud he is of me, how he appreciates everything I do for our marriage, how much he loves me... and then there is a clue. "I have the best live growing thing sitting on me in your house. Find that living thing and open me up" I actually walked through the house 3 times and had to re-read it three times before it "clicked" We have a little stand that we have plant sitting on. It opens up. So..I go, open it up and inside is a Garmin 305! WOW!

The note was nice enough! Very heart-felt and something I really needed. But the Garmin...yay!

I tested it out today on my 4 miler. Very cool...I just need to learn how to really use it now!

The run itself was just harsh! It was so windy...what a blustery day! ugh. I actually ended up walking more than running. I did bust it out a few times just to see how fast I could run. I was supposed to do 4.5 miles, but ended up only doing 4. We had plans and I was already pushing it to get ready on time. I was sooo frustrated. At least I got it done. Let's hope next week's LR is better!

Angie...sounds like we had similar runs! I'm glad to know it gets better!

Mel...WOW! Your tatoo is so cool!

Amy...GIRL! 20 miles in 4 days! No wonder your legs felt tired! I'm glad to hear that overall the run felt good. I can't wait for those days!

Deb...That was so nice of you to "donate" those cookies!

Jackie...Yay on the PR!

Lilly...Great to hear how well you did on the TM!!!

To all I missed...Sorry! Hope everyone has a had a great weekend!!!

Stacie

Jeff, I am fueling my recovery with Thin Mints!!! Yes, I had to make TWO trips to the local Grocery. Yesterday the girls were out of Thin Mints...:scared1: So I bought two other boxes. Today I got three thin mints that are safely in the freezer, but that means I really HAVE to eat the box left from last year's sale.:rotfl:

NICE!

Well I went golfing today after my run, and kept my energy up by eating a sleeve of thin mints. MMMMM, MMMMM, Good.

Hi WISH Team!

I spent my first hour on TM yesterday. The thing is that I did an hour at almost 15 min pace! I think I might be good for Minnie at this rate.
PS--I have a link in my siggie to the threrd Recipes for Runners on the go that we had going here a while back. If you've got any recipes that you can add please do so. I think we could all benefit by it and the link is in a location that will not get lost. (You've just got to know to go there.)

Tiger Lily - Yay for an hour at that pace, sounds like you are recovering!
Loved the link to the recipes, I'll be printing some off tomorrow.

I wanted to share this with you all... enjoy!

This was created by Donna Scaff, wife of Dr. Jack Scaff (founder of Honolulu Marathon Clinic & one of the original Honolulu Marathon founders as well).

It's called a "Tuit". It's for handing out to all your family and friends who say they are going to start exercising, but never do. Weeks, months, and years go by, and you ask them "What happened to you're promise to exercise?" And the answer you always get is "I'll get a round tuit."

Print, cut, and paste together your own copies of the "round tuit", and hand them out to all your family and friends who keep putting of exercising. Tell them here is your "round tuit". It's to inspire them to start exercising, and no more excuses.

Tuit.jpg

Here is Donna's inspirational poem to go with the "tuit."

ODE TUIT (JUST TUIT!) by Donna M Scaff

T’was way back in March, when whom did I meet?
The Honolulu Marathon Clinic;
A cachophany of runners…
And all so unique!

At 7:30 every Sunday they’d gather.
As to age, sex, or size, it just didn’t matter!
Then I learned Doc Scaff, in his entertaining way,
Was teaching them the rules of running as play.

Me? Run 26 miles, and do it the same day?
“It can’t be done” we were all heard to say.
Deep down I hoped that someday I could do it
& I told my friends I’d try, when I got “a round tuit”

The faithful appeared come rain or come shine
And eagerly listened to Doc’s every line.
“Do a marathon?? Why of course you can!
So listen up because here’s the plan….”

Its only 1 hour 3 times a week.
Drink beer & eat carbs by the heap!
Be faithful, conversational
and oh yes, get lots of sleep!

Before I knew it, the months had flown by
5 miles, and 10….wow, I’m in Hawaii Kai!
There were bus rides, parties, picnics and fun,
And through it all, I couldn’t believe how far I’d come!

Now it’s with vim and vigor
I’m up at sunrise.
I’ve changed my visage
And I’m down one more size!

Good night… its December
And race day draws near!
Have I done enough miles?
Ah yes, there’s some fear!

Then the starting gun fires
And I’m pulled by the mass
I desperately keep my pace
So I won’t run out of gas!

Then I wonder “can I make it to the end”?
And Doc’s words echo in my head as I come round the bend.
“Be of good cheer because of course you can…I’ve said it before, now here’s the plan.”

Go from aid station to aid station,
As you maintain your pace.
As Peter says “water, water, water”
And you’ll finish, because you’ve got the base!

Though the course lies ahead
The year flashes past
The friendships, the runs…
Then I realize…this won’t be my last!
So to you dear listener,
my gift’s from inside
It’s from my heart
which is bursting with pride.

As you can tell, not only am I in to it,
But I hope you’ll be too,
When like me,
YOU get a round tuit.

I found it...

Here's the Mickey Mouse 15th Marathon Anniversary tattoo, pretty cool.

WDWmarathontattoo.jpg

I myself would do just the Mickey Mouse running part with 39.3 underneath, but the Queen has vetoed it. My oldest sister has a cute Tinker Bell on her thigh.

A quick post before going to work today.

We went to Sea World on Friday and let Billy play around the Happy Harbour area. For some reason he loved the rope climbing areas. I have now found that they are a great source for cross training. My calves have been sore for 2 days now just trying to keep up with him. :lmao: So during training for Mickey and Donald, we all need to take a field trip and take over the rope area.

Timmy has taken the first steps towards becoming a runner. Yep, he is now walking :cool1: , albeit not long distances at a time but he seems to get faster with each new try. Crawling is still faster but when trying to catch the big brother he figures he needs to walk.

For those in the Orlando area, we were at the Character Warehouse at the outlet mall and saw they had Donald and Goofy shirts and jackets for half price. I think there were some mugs as well. There was also some Tower of Terror 13k shirts and jackets as well.

Cool. Now if I could find the side view of Donald running for DH... :confused3

Scott, thanks for the update on the GWCC! :thumbsup2

Off to run 3 miles...

Thanks Scott! I HATE parking my Boat (aka SUV) in those parking garages, so I think I'll take MARTA! Plus the kids love riding it. :confused3 (not that great for me, but it is efficient transportation)

My kids love Marta too. We are going to France next summer and we were explaining to them about the long plane flight etc etc and my son pipes up "Can we take Marta to the airport?" Poor guy, its gonna be a long long trip if his favorite part is over after the first hour.

Crawling is still faster but when trying to catch the big brother he figures he needs to walk.
Awwww. My son learned to walk when he realized that it hurt less to hold his cars. we have dozens of pictures of him holding a car in each fist.

Dh and I got to workout together yesterday. I think I am going to like the new gym once I get comfortable there. I definately miss working out with my husband. He pushes me much harder than my friend the trainer. The trick was balancing my enthusiasm for the new workout without hurting myself before a race.

Have a great day everyone!
Cecilia

Top O' The Morning To ya, lassies and laddies! :shamrock:

OK, today's lesson in training is titled .........."Don't Be Stupid Like Me."

Friday night I was pretty sick. I don't know if it was a stomach virus or because I ate a sugar-free Klondike bar. I can't handle Sorbitol or any of those sweeteners they use in sugar-free foods. All night Friday I was having...."gastric distress". :rolleyes2 But since I missed my L/R the Saturday before I was determined to do my eight miles this weekend. Well, there's a reason, I guess, why we have that old adage about "above the neck, yes, below the neck, no". I got on the TM early Saturday morning, even though it was the last thing I felt like doing. About the sixth mile I started to feel very tired. By the end of the seventh mile I was holding the handrails praying it would end soon. By the end, I was exhausted. I headed up the stairs and at the top had one of my famous white-outs. :faint: Charlie helped me to the reclining chair and covered me with two blankets and I was still shivering. I spent the next two hours watching cartoons and sipping PowerAde. I don't think I have ever been so completely depleted. 13 miles never took this much out of me. I was severely dehydrated and that probably messed up my electrolytes.

By lunchtime I was better, but I was really tired for the rest of the day. Naturally, we had yard work to do, but I just took it slow. I took yesterday and today as rest days. Today I feel like a new woman and have noticed that my legs really feel much stronger after two days off. :thumbsup2

Cam had a good point on Saturday, that it is sometimes good to train under adverse conditions. If Saturday had been race day, I would have had a tough decision to make, but now I realize how much...pardon the pun...intestinal fortitude I have developed. When it comes down to it, I can really push myself if I have to.

Has anyone seen Steve and Krista?

Mel - Oh I'm sorry you're not 100% yet. Whoa! A tattoo! You're a brave woman. It begs the question, though...where is it?

Kristi - What? You're Irish? Hey, did you see News4 was looking for redheads today. They say in 100 years redheads will be extinct. Can't imagine why. :upsidedow

Lily - Oh wow! You're really doing great! :thumbsup2 Oh poor Ted...take care of him for us please. He was so good to us when you were in surgery.

Stacie - Wow, sweeeet DH!! :cloud9:

OriginalBill - Wow, Timmy's training for his first event! Cool! :cool2:

Happy St. Patrick's Day!

Question for those in Atlanta, we are going to the ING Georgia Marathon, doing the half. We will be staying with relatives in Newnan. Would you recommend getting there early to find parking and where? or parking at a Marta stop and taking the Marta in, if so, which stop and where would you get off? Thanks for the input. And thanks for the info that the Expo is supposed to be held as planned.

Hey team - My life is so super crazy right now that I lurk and then run out of time to post every where I want to! SO on Saturday I did 6 miles. We were kidless for the morning, so we both went to the gym. I am still training indoors since we are at the moment getting snow AGAIN! And if any little snow melts, it turns to ice. I am really tired of winter, it has been extra long this year as it started early and is ending late!!

So on Saturday I did the indoor track. My first mile was a doozie... I was in shock and excitement.... 10:35. I was LIGHTENING. It was so super crazy. But I could tell I couldn't do that for all 6 miles. I ran 1/2 of the second mile and DH came to join me so I walked 1/2 mile with him. Even with that extra long walk, I finished my 6 miles a minute faster than my last 6 miler. I was pretty happy with that.

Mel - Now that you got your tattoo, DH is really nagging me hard. NOTE to team - Mel and I discussed tattoos during the Full marathon and did one of those... if you do it, I will do it. I guess it's my turn now.

Judy - YOWZERS. And I thought I was stubborn. Thank goodness Charlie was there to help you out!

Bil - Oh I love SeaWorld. Let me know the date and maybe I can cross train!!!

Judy, yes occasionally getting your miles despite discomfort can make you tougher. But use that technique sparingly since you are right on the edge of injury when you do that to.

My achillies is doing much better but right now I have a groin muscle that is a bit mad at me. The stretching does have a little danger involved also. My workouts right now are have walking and half stretching and calistetics. I'm getting more limber so I hope that equates to more better fast.

Mel We love the Tattoo. Erica will be getting hers soon. She wants a ring of disney race icon characters around her ankle with a ribbon connecting them. I wouldn't mind getting the same thing on my left arm where a bicep would be if I had one.

Kristi is extinct? OMG!

Have an awesome day y'all.

Walking Panda:hippie:

Mel--Should we be looking for you on an episode of Miami Ink?

Happy St. Patrick's Day. Hope everyone enjoys the spring carb loading of Guiness today, as well as canolis and zepellis on Wednesday (St. Joseph's Day). [Don't tell any of the Lean Meaners I posted that.] I didn't do anything special for the Ides of March on Saturday though. (What's there to do to celebrate a traitorous friend assasinating the then leader of the "free" world?)

Hey all! Good to be back. I was completely laid out afer Tuesday last week. Cogh, stuffy head, sore throat, fever...Should have been a Nyquil ad. ;) Tried to run Saturday, poor choice. an 2.5 out adn walked back. On the bright side, my appetite is down adn lost a couple pounds. :upsidedow

Mel - Nice tatoo! Hope yo are 100% soon.

Judy - :scared1: You scare me sometimes. Glad you are feeling better now adn the legs feel good!

Debra - Love buying the cookies and not taking tthem, too cool.

Jeff - Nice Tuit! Cool poem.

Bill - Glad you had fun. Hope those calves are better soon!

Stacie - Huge congrats on teh garmin.

Shan - Woo hoo for the 12-miler! Yu are golden!

Stephanie - :wizard: for that knee!

Adriana - Huge congrats on the great run. That is an awesome improvement!

Jen - COngrats on teh 6-miler!

Sorry, my brain's still a bit befuddled. Apologies to the many, many I missed.

Hi Lynn!

Newnan is located south of downtown Atlanta. If you wanted to take MARTA, you could park at the College Park MARTA station and ride the rail up to the Peachtree Center stop (which is three easy blocks from the Olympic Park and arenas..where the start/finish is located). That's probably the easiest and cheapest way to do it. The trip time on the rail should be around 19 minutes. MARTA fares are $1.75 each way and parking at the station is free. MARTA runs a great website here: www.itsmarta.com

There are a few lots around, including all around the Dome, Philips Arena and surrounding vicinity...I haven't seen a street closure list yet but I'm sure it might be a bit of a headache to drive in...and I bet those lots will jack up the normal $6-$10 fees.

They changed the race start location this year, so it's a new experience for everyone involved. I do believe though that this location will provide for a much nicer start/finish area.

Also...

www.inggeorgiamarathon.com has said that the race will go on as scheduled and to watch their site for updates this week on the expo and hotel information.

Hope this helps!!

Edited to add: You'll have to come up to the expo before hand anyway to get your race packet and would be a great trial run so you get familiar with locations and what not before the actual race day. MARTA fare is available for purchase at the expo as well :goodvibes:

Has anyone seen Steve and Krista?
I was wondering where they've been too... :confused3

Kristi - What? You're Irish? Hey, did you see News4 was looking for redheads today. They say in 100 years redheads will be extinct. Can't imagine why. :upsidedow
Nope. Not Irish.
Well, maybe a smidge since I am kind of a mutt. A near extinct mutt! :rotfl:
I did hear that about redheads becoming more & more rare.
So, y'all better appreciate me that much more! :rotfl2:

Judy - don't do the crazy sick, doing 8 miles anyway thing again, ok? What is Charlie wasn't there to help you?
I am glad you are doing better now though.

Ok, went to Molly & Craig's bday party at my sister's in the boonies. Did I mention she has 3, yes 3, dogs...and a cat? Oh, and I am highly allergic too any animal. The asthma got going pretty badly while I was there. I have been sucking on my inhaler alot. Not good. So, my LR is out. I am not going to stress to much about it, even though the Great Bay half is on 4/6. Breathing is kind of important ;) so I am not going to push it until I am at least a little better.
