Wk of Mar 11--WISH Walking/Running Club

Happy End of Monday, Crew!

I am loving some of the conversation going on on these boards -- I am lurking a lot, but perhaps I will get up the gusto to post!

Thanks for cheering me on! It is great how some of you can read through and respond to everyone. I try, but I just am not that good!

I loved reading about how you dropped your daughter off then cruised around for an hour, Mike. I never would have found my way back, which is one of the many reasons why I do not have kids yet (followed closely by no wedding, no money, and still rather young).

Good luck with your mom, Angie! What spurred her decision making? Will she be living with you? Really close to you? Sounds a bit stressful to me, personally! I'm sure it will work out, though, right?

Some of you are going so quick -- 3 miles in 25:00?! I aspire to be there someday.

Does anybody else find the first two miles of any run to be the most dreadful experience? I wish I could just run from mile two on...

I ran 5.52 miles today in town. I haven't run here since summer, and I ran the old route. It was tough as I am still sore from the weekend, but I still finished in 1:02, which is good. I am sick of puddles, though, making my shoes all ugly looking! Of course, it's kind of like battle wounds for shoes. I guess there are two ways of looking at this one... Also, I think i may be bruising a toenail. I think I will go paint them so I can't see it! I lost a couple last summer, too. DBF will just have to get used to my ugly feet!

Bedtime for this little lady! Enjoy your Tuesdays, everybody!

Random drive by for those in the market for a Forerunner 305 (I have the 205 myself):

"Buy.com still has the Garmin Forerunner 305 GPS Watch, model no. 010-00467-00, for $259.99 before this $50 mail-in rebate, $209.99 after. With $6.96 for shipping, it's the lowest total price we could find."

That's a good price. I just checked Costco on line. They have for $269 before rebate.

:wave2:
Ashley - I HATE those first 2 miles! My legs hurt, I am sore, I am bored, etc. After that, I could go forever! I am always saying this exact same thing to people whenever it comes up in conversation.

Ashley - I have exactly the same problem. If I could start at mile 2, I'd run marathons every weekend!

Quick driveby - just got off the TM...

I RAN FOR A WHOLE MILE!!!!

Cam - Ever since you posted that about a month ago, you've been my inspiration. I've just been waiting for a morning where I felt good enough to go for it, and today was the day!

And to make it even better, after the mile, I walked for a minute, and then ran the rest of the time, which was another .6 miles! Finished the 3 miles in 40:00, which is by far my best TM time ever (I walked the first 4 minutes.)

Gotta go get DD out of bed - 10th grade writing test is today. Have a great day everyone!

Good Morning TEAM: :surfweb:

No more training to report since yesterday, but I signed up for a 5 mile race on Saturday. On St. Patrick's Day I'll be running "Johnny's Runnin' o' the Green". I'm looking forward to running a race. It will be my first one since Disney.

Oh, here's something else neat that happened. I stopped in Fleet Feet on Saturday to drop off a race registration, and one of the co-owners asked if I would be willing to be interviewed for a radio show tomorrow. She's going on the radio to discuss the "Learn to Run" program I participated in (twice), and they wanted to talk with a previous graduate. She said that she'd like to talk with me since I just finished my first marathon. I thought that was nice.

OK, time for more catching up:
WOW DAVE! You were FLYING! :cool1: :cool1: :cool1:
Thanks for the congrats...but seeing your GREAT TIMES, you so could have hung with me. WDW 08...you run with me!:hippie:
No flying pig:sad2: ! It seems that every time I get a paycheck, it goes to something breaking down in the house or the car!:confused3 OUT OF CONTROL!
Christa- If I can get to WDW in 08, I'd be honored to run with you. I still don't know what the family plan is for next January. Like you said, that paycheck gets stretched pretty thin at times. Sorry, you won't be able to make the Pig.

Melissa- I like your low intensity workout with coffee. So is anyone in your meet concerned that the mapmaker got lost on the course? :lmao:

Laurie- Good job listening to your body and not pushing it too much. 2 miles is great. How was the hockey?

Martha- Glad your hip's not hurting you. Where's Craig? Good luck on the speed work.

Mel- Nice run. Your pace is getting down there. WTG! It's 80 degrees there already! Wow, maybe I won't complain about the cold here anymore. It's going to be getting hot in your neck of the woods soon. Oh no, sorry to hear about DD14s first experience with the Minnie training. I hope she has a better run next time without the sunscreen.

Andrew- Nice job on the 3 miler on the bike path. Wasn't it nice to be out in shorts? Good luck on the 5k this weekend.

Craig- There you are. Thanks for asking about the shins. I haven't been having any trouble with my shins at all. Maybe a little soreness every now and then, but not the sharp searing pain that I had last year. I am trying to be careful to not hurt the shins again. In fact, I'm heading to the pool today to get a SWOG in for my x-training. I don't want to push my legs too much. Glad your meds are kicking in, and you're starting to feel better. So you're planning on running the Marine Corps Marathon this year? That's on my schedule for next year, 2008. If you don't get in this year, want to try for next with me? I'd still love to meet you. Feel better.

Jackie- Did you run on the TM this morning? Hey, you ran a whole mile. WHOO HOOOO!!! WTG!

Terri- I think the Pirate and Princess 5k filled up really fast last year. Your friends should definitely not wait to sign up at the expo. It was filled way before that. Good luck with the doctor today.

Vic- Nice job on the x-training. I see the pollen is getting dusted off your weight bench too.

Stephanie- Whoa, that's a smokin' fast 3 miler, and you are recovering from a marathon right? Great job. You are queen speedy.

TXAng- Great job with the run. Congratulations on bumping up the R/W intervals. Good luck with your Mom's move. Wow, I can't believe she made that major decision in such a short time.

Ashley- Post, Post, Post... it's always good to hear how you're doing. You know Ashley, when I first started out last year it took me a good mile or two to get warmed up. Lately, it hasn't been like that. My runs have started out much, much smoother. Nice job on the 5.52 miles. That's a great distance for a midweek short run. WTG!

Kristi- How's you're training going for the half marathon in a couple weeks? Are you in taper mode yet?

Carrie- you must be busy with work, but I just wanted to say hello.

Here's a shout out to my other friends too - Hi Judy, Cam, Howard, Krista, Steve, Anne and Colleen. I'm sure there's lots of others I missed too, but I hope you are all doing well.

Colleen- Did you just get back from your trip to Disney? How'd it go? Must be great to have your DH back in town. Is he planning on running Boston this year? I seem to remember he was debating it.

:wave2:
Ashley - I HATE those first 2 miles! My legs hurt, I am sore, I am bored, etc. After that, I could go forever! I am always saying this exact same thing to people whenever it comes up in conversation.

My problem seems to be miles 4 - 6, before and after that I am alright. For some reason I really stuggle through those.

Yesterday was an off day. This morning I am going to do my 3 miles & then Curves tonight.

Jackie-WTG!!!!!!!

Dave-Wow, you're going to be a celebrity :cool2: Can we say "we knew you when"? Just kidding, that's cool she picked you because you have done so well with your training!!:thumbsup2

Terri-Last year the 5k filled up early and I didnt get DH & DS registered. DS ended up running with my dad's number because he wanted to do it so bad. I dont think they are registering for the 5k just yet but do register early. Hope you are feeling good!

Ashley-great job on your run!

Mel-I am so sorry about DD. Send her :wizard: from us.

Have a great day everyone!

Colleen- Did you just get back from your trip to Disney? How'd it go? Must be great to have your DH back in town. Is he planning on running Boston this year? I seem to remember he was debating it.

Well Dave, let's just say things are not looking good at this point for DH running Boston. His training is been dismal and when he tries to get his mileage up, he develops knee pain after 8 miles.

He bailed on his long run last weekend after 5 miles. :confused3 I think he is going to try one more long run this and if he can't run painfree, he will pull the pin on Boston.

I am a little disappointed because he is already entered ($110 entry fee) and we already purchased airfare to Boston (4 tickets, kids were coming) as well!:sad2: So we will be out a lot of $$$. I guess I just have to look at it that we will be "saving" money by not spending $300 a night on a hotel room for 4 nights, meals for 4 people, etc., etc.

On a side note, yes we had a great time at Disney. Spend 4 days there the first week of March. It has been a hectic winter with DH gone so much. Hopefully with Spring coming things will get back to normal and I can start running again soon. Also not sure about the Pig yet, this Boston thing (that probably won't happen now) really chewed up a lot of our extra cash.

Colleen

Terri,, hope your achilles will start feeling better soon. Do you have a date set when you can start training again?

Oh, those first two miles:sad2: Yes, I hate them too. In fact, I really don't get into a zone until 4.5 miles. I can pretty much set my watch to it. Once I get past that 45 minute mark, I am set.

Stephanie, congrats on your great marathon result. I did read your report. It was awesome!

Vic, sounds like your training is going well!

Judy, so sorry to hear about your Knightly Logic.

Who was it that ran 3 or 4 half marathons on consecutive weekends?? Matt, was that you?? That was great, you running fool!:yay:

Martha, your progress is awesome! You will be so ready for Minnie!

Sorry to all those I missed! I will try and stop by more often, now that things are settling down here.

Colleen

I RAN FOR A WHOLE MILE!!!!
:woohoo: WOO HOO, Jackie!:woohoo:
I aspire to be there with you & Cam one day!

Dave - very cool about the radio show - our own WISH celebrity! And my plan doesn't really taper for some reason. I have long runs on Sunday right up until the wek before. The mid week stuff before the race is less, but that's it. Then as soon as that's done, I jump into training for Minnie.

Colleen - can you guys still come to Boston and see the sights? Or maybe get credit on your airfare for something else? Chad was injured & had to bail on Boston the one year he had a waiver & was signed up - it really stinks!

Colleen- That is really too bad about Boston. Can DH use his qualifying time for next year '08? What airline did you have tickets on? Can you turn in your tickets and use the money for a different flight? The marathon entry fee is one thing to have to eat, but the airline ticket prices are another. Many airlines are letting you save the credits for another flight. I hope you can do that.

Morning all!!!

Mike (Goofyguy)-- Wow, great pace!!! :thumbsup2

Dave-- Wow, great job!! :thumbsup2

Mel-- Fantastic pace for your run! :thumbsup2

Jackie-- Way to go!!

Craig/Jackie-- I know how you feel, it's kinda lonely being a soccer fan in the US. Having been to a couple of matches in Europe (including one in Marsielle.... wow), it's a completely different experience than here for sure. I was in Toronto during the last World Cup and I was amazed by the fandom, even right over the border.

OK, so everone else is making me feel like a HUGE slug lately, so I'm definately getting outside after work this afternoon. It's in the 50s here, so I think I'm just going to get out there and see how far I manage to go. I really think I need to find some races between now and Disney in order to stay motivated this time. I know I'll have more time to train with a different job, so I am less worried about that aspect, but I think the short-term goals should help. I'm reading up on a bunch of different training plans, but I'm holding off on picking anything until after class registration later this month (my LAST one), since I want to make sure the plan fits with my schedule well (something I did poorly with last time).

Back to work here...

Happy training!
Kevin :earsboy:

Good morning all. For some reason I didn't sleep well last night, so I traded tomorrow's rest day for today's XT. So, yes, I did nothing today.

Mel - Well, I'm just glad HM won't be closed when we go for the Minnie! What are they going to do in there anyway? Dust? Hey, maybe they can get Vic to do it! :rotfl: OMG I hope DD14 is OK now. I have to use a sunscreen for sensitive skin. It doesn't have...shoot, I can't think of the name of the ingredient right now. But it doesn't have one thing that sometimes causes reactions. OK, let me think...

Craig
- Well, I still think it's cool that you knew. :cool2: Say, I think I will take your advice to Vic, but apply it to housework. I think I need to avoid housework for at least twelve weeks before a major race. Yes, it could be dangerous. You never know what could happen, I could spray myself with Windex or something. Yeah, I think the housework had to stop immediately. The Marine Corps Marathon? :worship:

Jackie - Oh that stinks! HM is one of my favorites. :woohoo: Whooo hooo on your mile! You go girl!

Dave - You're famous! :cool2: Oh I wish we could hear it down here. Thank you so much for having me on your list of friends. That's sooo sweet!

OK, back to "real" work. Ewww. :surfweb:

Dave, thanks for the suggestions. Jeff (DH) qualified in Kiawah Island 2005, so this is his last year he can use his qualifying time for Boston.

Like you said, the airfare is another story. I actually booked 2 one-way tickets (long story). We are/were flying Airtran to Boston and US Airways home. I read on the airline sites that Airtran charges $60 per ticket for changes and USAir charges $100 per ticket, so it looks like we are going to lose $160 per person for changes, which doesn't leave much. I will wait until next week and make a few phone calls to see what can be done.

Kristi, we were thinking about seeing the sites anyway, but DS9 and DD7 would be missing 2 days of school so we nixed that idea.

Colleen

Hi there guys! I'm new to this board (long time DIS member). I was inspired to give the 2008 Half Marathon a shot. I've taken up running, though I let my workouts slip in Jan/Feb because of the bitter cold. When I was jogging I could do about 11-12 minute mile and felt after a straight 1/2 hour that I had plenty of go left.

Any tips on training? What kind of terrain should I work on. I really prefer running on the HS track where it's flat.

Yesterday I had my VO2 tested. It was a pretty interesting experience getting hooked up to a breathing machine while running on a TM.

I've had the heart rate monitor sitting in the drawer, but have not used it because I did not know what HR to train at. Now I know.

The numbers came out to about what I expected and learned what I need to do inorder to get a faster pace.....run more speed work. Why does it always come down to speed work. :confused3

When I start training again I will include speed work, but that won't be for several months.

I also have a new plan. If I can get into the field for the Marine Corps Marathon in October I'll get up and run the darn thing. I've heard it's a really nice event, and I can have a nice weekend and call it a training run for January 13, 2008. Is anyone else trying to get into the Marine Corp and we can meet for dinner?

Craig,

I've already sent in my registration for the Marine Corps Marathon. I recieved an application at the Disney Expo that instructs to "Mail completed form with payment by: April 30, 2007". Confirmation will be available at the end of June, but I was told at the Expo, "that all forms marked "Disney Marathon" from the Expo are guaranteed". We'll see. Serious training will start June 26th.

It would be great to meet for dinner. I'll pencil you in.:)
