Wk of Jul 9--2007 WISH Walking/Running Club

Seeing the trail running comments just a drive by...

Judy- I came visiting you yesterday. Not really but close. Did my long run at Rockefeller State Park Preserve. Pretty nice place to run long but yesterday was hot and I just had a stonker of a run. Was supposed to go 2'45" or so and I bailed at 1'45". Bad Lynne- very bad.

Sunny - the picts were wonderful!!!! The area looked just beautiful and I loved the shots of DS. Sorry your pain is not really improving. :guilty: That is so wonderful that you and your daughter did the 5k together.

Oh, great!!!! I have been trying to write this post so long that I forgot everything.

I didn't do anything today. I ran 3 miles on the TM and then mt. biked on the road with the PUSS for about 15 miles this weekend. I was supposed to lift today, but I woke up all stiff and my shoulder has really been hurting today. I think sleeping must be hard on me! Tomorrow is a long workout day, but I'm not sure what phil and i are doing.

First, the important thing....

I CAN RUN!!!!!!

Whew... I did 2 miles on the treadmill in 17:05, so 8:33/mile, give or take. I didn't feel much pain while running or immediately after, but I did stiffen up a tad on the drive home. It feels pretty dandy right now. I'm scheduled for 4 tomorrow morning on the road.

Cam-- The Olive garden idea sounds good to me. :thumbsup2 I really like Puck's too, so i totally understand that option too.

Sunny-- Dean Karnazes is really something. But I sort of don't know what that something is. Astounding, Hardworking, Masochistic or Completely Nuts. Probably all of those. Congrats on the great 5K finish!

Kevin (Solotraveler) :earsboy:

Hey, guess what!?!!? I did my first sub 13:00 mile tonight! 12:53! I warmed up for 4 minutes, then re-started the TM, jogged 2 minutes, walked 3, jogged 1, walked 4, then walked up until I saw that I could finish sub-13:00 if I jogged again. Since I did the 5 miles yesterday I wasn't going to TM tonight, but DH had saved my favorite TM for me when I got to the gym, so I did that and then 20 minutes on the elliptical.

Kevin -- glad to hear you could run! Hope you iced when you got home and stretched some more. Take care of you! Sending :goodvibes:

Hi all - it's my turn to ask for the pixie dust. Admittedly not for a person but for my 15 year old cat shaped fur baby. She's currently having a blood transfusion at the vets, to get her strong enough so they can investigate the 'suspicious mass' in her bladder. I'm aware that it's not looking good, but we can hope can't we???? They've said there is a chance it's something other than a tumour so I"m clinging on to it - and now weeping all over the keyboard again (but I cry when I see Eyeore, so don't worry yourselves over that one so much). Anyway, wish us luck, I'll keep you updated - I'm now off for a run, why do I think it might be a fast one. Helen

Helen -- I am sending pixiedust: and :goodvibes: and good wishes for your furbaby. Please let us know how she is doing. We can hope that whatever unusual thing they are seeing on the test results is just a furball, right? I am headed out of my office for a while but will check back later.
Sending a  for you and Tim, too.

Just call me the village idiot!! :joker: I ran last night for the first time in 13 days ( :sad2: ) and it was not pretty. My ankle started killing me and I have no idea why. I hurt my left ankle in September when I fell running, but this was my right ankle and it was throbbing pain in the outer bone. Plus I ran right after work and it was still 86 degrees with 83% humidity and to make matters worse, I had forgotten how painful it was run with mosquitoes bites when sweat starts running over them. I'm a mess!!! I think I'm going to go back to the treadmill for a little bit, where it's cooler in the basement, there is less impact, and I tend to go about 60-90 seconds slower on the treadmill (I'm afraid I'm going to fall off :rotfl: ), so that will help me slow down my pace and hopefully prevent an injury. I know Hines is going to miss our runs until I get back on the street, so I guess I'll have to run and then take him for a cool down walk. Oh, and guess what: THE SOCK IS STILL ON THE STREET!!!!! I think that sock is going to live in the neighborhood longer than we are!

Tiff--Congrats on signing up for the half!! Thanks for the update on the capacity levels, I need to pass that on to my Mom. She is really wanting to do the half again, but she was in a car wreck in February, it wasn't life threatening, but there was significant damage to her shoulder. She is waiting to get clearance from her physical therapist to start running and walking again before she signs up. Regardless, she and Dad are coming to be a part of the scream team. As for the Flying Pig, it was a fantastic course--very scenic and quite a bit of support. The only bad part about the course is that it is VERY hilly, and there is one gigantic hill between miles 6-10, it's not too hard, but you'll be feeling it the next day! I think Stephen and I are planning on doing the Pig next year, along with 3 of Stephen's cousins. Well, I'm loosely planning to do the Pig, I'm hoping to be a few pounds heavier by then and counting down my nine months. ;) Cincinnati is about 5 hours from Nashville--hope that helps!

Christa--Great pics! You look great!

Sunny--I love your pics too. It looks like you have fun camping. I have to say, you are much more the outdoorswoman than I am. We left camping on Saturday to go see Pirates of the Caribbean, I begged Stephen to just take me home, but he made me go back until Sunday.

Carrie--I too will do anything for my nieces and nephews, especially my nephew Logan (no one in my family is on the boards, so I can say he is my favorite). Hey, I'm going to be in your great state on Friday, Stephen's cousin is getting married this weekend and the wedding is in Mount Pleasant. Not close to you, but closer than Ohio!

Mel--I love the bracelets, but here's a dumb question, do they only have adult sizes or kids sizes too? I have tiny wrists and I cannot wear the adult sizes in the rubber bracelets, they slip right off my hand. I know  . I think we are doing the Race for the Taste too. Stephen and I are going to be in WDW Sept 30-Oct 8 for an early anniversary vacation, we've talked about doing the race before leaving for the airport. Oh, and another silly question, but do you think the food court at POR will have enough carb or healthy options for us to eat? And will they run out of pasta? I haven't really eaten in the food courts in Disney, so I really don't know what's on the menus.

Helen-- :wizard: for your kitty!!!

Judy--Your comments about your family make me :rotfl2: . At least you are in Italy and not stuck in PA, 30 minutes away from all civilization!! Did I say that out loud? :teeth:

Kristi-- :scared1: :scared1: I get nervous when I encounter a stray dog, I would be a wreck with a coyote!! Great job on your negative splits!

Sara--You rock!!!

Kevin--Glad that your knee is okay!

Cam--Great job on your 5K, when's the next one?

Jodi--Haven't seen you around much lately, how are you doing? Training going okay?

I'd love to sit and chat some more, but my work is piling up, so I better go. I'll be around here a lot more, with marathon training starting in about 5 weeks, I can't slack off anymore. :rolleyes1 ;)

:surfweb: This is me today...I just cannot get going and I have already had several cups of coffee! I think I must be recovering from last week when we opened the show...Thanks for all the wonderful comments! The show we did was written by our directors and it called "Not Just another Love Story". It is set in the WWII era.....

I think I'm going to go back to the treadmill for a little bit, where it's cooler in the basement, there is less impact, and I tend to go about 60-90 seconds slower on the treadmill (I'm afraid I'm going to fall off ), so that will help me slow down my pace and hopefully prevent an injury.
Krista - I totally understand! I have fallen off the back b/4...not fun, but I am sure it was funny.

Kevin - for the knee feeling better! You gave us all a scare! :goodvibes

Helen - :tink: for your puddy cat! :grouphug: for you!

Cam - :thumbsup2 :cheer2: :cool1: :woohoo: for your sub 13 mile! That is WONDERFUL!

Sunny - Love the article on Dean...He will be running 1 of his marathons in a town near Charlotte. It is a trail run. But you have to pay like $100 to run with him...yeah, like I could even keep up. Some runners here aren't too happy about that, but I think it is cool what he is trying to do.

Happy Birthday Mel!!!!!
BTW, any news on your dd yet?

Cam - :cool1: Woo hoo on the sub 13!!!

Kevin - for being able to run!!!

Helen - :wizard: and  for you and your furbaby. I am so sorry. Let us know how thigns go.

Krista - So sorry about teh bad run. :wizard: that the TM will be much better for you. BTW, I think I win the village idiot award for my 4 to 6 weeks of slacking.

Bekah - SOunds like you are right on track!

I walked 3 miles last night. I know that's not really how I should XT, but I got my butt moving. Supposed to run 3 tonight. Been better on hydrating and hope that helps.

It's so hard to motivate this year. Nothing is new and my times are not at all what I htought they'd be. :( I told Scott that we need to plan more races next year and he laughed. Not too many during the week races around here. Our weekend schedule is so messed up that it's really hard. Been better the last 2 weeks, but not great. Somebody help me kick it in gear again!!!! I may have a 5K next month, but that's about all I've planned.

You and me both, sister!! :guilty: For as much as I have been trying to get in good shape to prepare for "real" training, its just not working lately. I'm hoping it turns around when we get to the 20 week mark. Anyone else got some tips?

Helen-- :wizard: for the furbaby.

Cam-- Great job on the sub-13 mile!! Way to go!!

So I completely slept through my morning 4-miler :rolleyes1 , so I will need to make that up this evening. My knee feels significantly better than yesterday, except for just a touch of soreness and a little tightness in my lower hamstring.

Happy training all!!
Kevin (Solotraveler) :earsboy:

I forgot my great news!! My local running store now sells ASICs!!!!!! :cool1: Won't need new shoes 'til fall now, but at least I have somethign to look forward to.

First off, I'm not wishing Mel a happy birthday because I've missed soooooo many b-days it wouldn't be fair. So Mel, congrats on your recent lap around the sun!!!!

MelR-- On the drive home I kicked myself for not gathering brochures for you. You and Phil would LOVE the white mountains. I don't know how they compare to other mountain camping/trail areas but juding by the fact that nearly 50% of the visitors are European, I'm guessing it's well worth the trip. And of course the motivation to sell you (Phil) is so we can do Reach the Beach next year!! Seriously, there is every kind of hiking, climbing, biking, white water rafting/kayaking you can imagine.

speaking of RtB. Our team finally decided to register and I went on line only to find reg. closed two days prior! Its just as well as several of us (me especially, weren't really up for it).

Cam-- 12:53!!!!!
You go, girl! :cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2: This is the woman that spent much of last year fearing the sweepers!!!!! I am soooooo proud of you. You truly rock :rockband: (no I haven't tried teh links, but I was wondering about the logistics of 50 in 50 in 50, too).

Kevin-- oops, I mean Speedy, you are on a roll! great pace again. Just keep an eye on the knee. It wouldn't hurt to elevate and ice after a run as a precaution.

Helen :wizard: :wizard: :wizard: :wizard: for your kitty. And BTW, speaking of race weeping, I cried when I saw you on the DVD, I exclaimed out loud "That's our Helen!!!!" (to nobody in particular).

I did 4.5 on the TM today  :thumbsup2 4.0 in 42:29. Slow but steady I'm on my way back...

Sunny

Helen - I am so sorry to hear about your furbaby. Here's hoping that everything turns out just fine. :grouphug:

Cam - Congrats on the time!!

Well, yesterday I worked out with The FIRM, which totally kicks my behind. All those squats have my poor legs screaming at me this morning!! But I made myself get out for a run anyway. 28m 12s of speed work loosened them up pretty good!!

I have a question for all of you ladies with semi long hair!! What do I do with it?? It seems that lately everytime I run my hair is getting massively tangled. Now to be honest my hair comes down to my mid back, but I really don't wanna have to cut it. I have worked so hard to get it here and looking good. Anyone have any advice??

Dana

Dana--I have fairly long hair, it comes down to my shoulder blades and I just put it up in a bun when I run and it doesn't get tangled at all. I can't stand it hanging in my face and even a pony tail makes me hot.

Hello all.

I should have taken this week off from training. I am soooo tired. :sad2: I was unloading and putting away things for the barn last night, hay, feed, shavings. It took two and a half hours and I am shot. I did train this morning but it was an all out effort just to walk for 45 minutes. I have to say, I think I would rather stay home and poke sticks in my eyes for a week rather then go on this trip. I know I sound like an ingrate, but honestly, if you only knew my MIL....

Sunny - What a fabulous idea you had about the bathing suit! I am so doing that! :thumbsup2 Oh yay on the TM workout!

Lynne  - WHAT??? You were THAT CLOSE TO ME??? If I had known I would have driven over there to see you! Tell me next time! I'll give you all my phone numbers. :goodvibes

Melissa
- I am becoming a big fan of resting right about now. Nothing wrong with a day off. :upsidedow

Kevin - Ohhh! I'm glad! How'd the 4 go today? Oh never mind. I see how it went...ZZZZZzzzzz..... :teeth:

Cam - Ohh that's FAB-U-LOUS! You go girlfriend!! :dumbo:

Helen - Oh no! Here's all the PD! :wizard: :wizard: :wizard: :wizard: :wizard: :wizard: Take it! OMG, please keep us posted.

Krista - Ohh be careful! That heat and humidity is a bad combination. The TM sounds like a good idea. I'm really glad ours is in the basement rec room. It's so much cooler down there. HA HA HA That sock! :lmao: Hey if I was in PA at least I wouldn't be so far from home, so I could run away if I wanted to!

Carrie - Ohhh! Happy birthday to you! I hope you get what you W.I.S.H. for! :bday: :cake: party:

Dana - I just put my hair in a low ponytail with a scrunchy. Not very fashionable but it works for me. :thumbsup2

That is really awesome news and it reminds me of a funny story. I don't need new shoes until fall either but there was this pair that I just couldn't resist so they have been riding around in the back of my car so I am not tempted to put them on until after the DL 1/2. I already have 3 in rotation and DH will only tolerate so much of my shoe obsession :confused3 Love those Asics.

Thanks, everyone, for the kudos on my sub-13:00 mile. I would LOVE to be able to sustain that pace over many miles, but really am not there yet. Having done it for 1 though, give me a goal -- sustain the pace for 2 miles. It is SOOO nice to have a goal.

Carrie -- I know what you mean about races being motivation to train. That is really the reason we do all these 5Ks, though I also tell myself we are helping to raise money for worthy causes. ;)

Helen -- still hoping to hear a good report on the furbaby. I hope you enjoyed your run!

Dana -- I know you were asking about what to do with your hair. I have put mine up in a high ponytail, but disgustingly, have found it soaked to the tips after a particularly grueling TM workout, so a bun might be better, if you can manage it. I am getting mine cut a bit shorter, but I think if I kept it long, I'd probably try for a bun so that the ponytail or braid wasn't swinging the whole time I was wogging.

Mel -- party: :bday: :cake: I hope you have a fabulous birthday!! I was just thinking of your DD and hoping your best birthday present this year is a completely clean bill of health for her. :goodvibes

Judy -- your discipline always impresses me so much! Even with all that hard work you still got on the treadmill. I hope you realize how much you inspire me and others here. BTW, we are going to be in the Catskills in about 6 weeks -- is that anywhere near you?

Sunny -- I am glad you are feeling well enough to try running again, but we all know you and we know how you drive yourself. Please, please take it easy and listen to your body. Don't try to do too much too fast.

Kristi -- are you taking lessons from Sunny? ;) Take it easy, kiddo! I am sure Hines will appreciate cool-down walks instead of long, grueling runs in this heat and humidity. :dogdance: <--- Isn't he cute?

Oh, and speaking of shoe obsessions -- I am still suffering from the discontinued shoe ailment. I haven't been able to bring myself to try something new and as long as I can find mine on-line at runningshoes.com (they have lots of running shoes that are hard to find/discontinued), I am not motivated to find something else. I will tell you, though, I could definitely tell that the padding is shot in one of the 3 pairs I have in rotation -- I am more inclined to shin splints when I wear those. I think it is time to try insoles or relegate those to everyday sneakers, rather than workout/wog shoes.

Okay, so tonight is supposed to be cross-training, but I did some elliptical work last night and I am really dying to try to sustain 13:00 for 2 miles, so maybe I'll do that tonight after my WW meeting. Howard is away until tomorrow night, so I won't feel so bad about getting home from the gym after 9 pm.

:rotfl2: I k now I'm an attention monger, but not quite that bad. :teeth: Maybe I should have done all caps, so the L on the end of mel, did not run into the !. I'm taking those good WISHes and "running" with them anyway, though. :rolleyes1

This is the perfect intro into my confession. I don't know if anyone remembers, but back in February, someone asked the question how old everyone was. I came into the thread late and said something like "going back to last week, I'm 27", I finished my post and went on my merry way. Hours later I checked the thread and everyone was wishing me a happy birthday, because it looked like I said last week I turned 27 (I guess I should have said, going back to an earlier post, I am 27). I thought, oh I won't say anything, just go with the flow, but I feel SO bad--even 5 months later I feel bad. I took birthday wishes that don't belong to me!!!   So, let me go on record and say that my birthday is not in February, it is July 19 and I will be 28. Whew! I feel much better now!! :thumbsup2

And HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MEL!!!!!!! :bday: party: :bday:

I'm glad you feel better now :teeth: I distinctly remember this very conversation, because I had just turned 27 myself the very same week you "did." And when I asked what the date was, you didn't say a word. :lmao: But hey, at least now we can all give you birthday wishes on your actually birthday. :)
