Wk of Jan. 20th-- WISH Walking/Running Club

WOW! Krista (not Christa) is pregnant! About being tired....I am asking that same question and Mine are 7 & 9. CONGRATS!

Ran a little over 7 today in 1 hour. Like Bree, I am in traing for a Tri in March. Glad for a change of pace. Not sure when I will be doing another marathon. The last one (in December) was too brutal. We will see.:confused3

Awesome pace as usual. I can't wait till I get close to that again. Think I am going to try a VERY EASY 2.5 tonight. So pathetic compared to what I used to do but better than nothing right?

Ran 4 on the DREAD mill today. It was torture! Probably because I've figured out I have a sinus infection and the pounding actually made my teeth hurt. Weird I know! There was this woman tearing up the tm beside me. When I finished my measly 4 she was at 6.75 and was still going strong with no water or anything to drink. Is it wrong that I hate her???

Krista: from everyone I hear you're supposed to get a surge of energy during your 2nd trimester. I wasn't so lucky, but everyone will tell you their pregnancy horror stories, I'll just tell you to enjoy this time. Feeling your baby move inside your body is the coolest experience. Pamper yourself as much as possible, because when your precious bundle joins the world it will no longer be about you......ever! That still hurts my feelers a bit! :rotfl:
Love your ticker. It's going to be fun watching it move along.

It is SUCH a small world. MY MOM went to Towson State University for secondary education!!! She is a middle school social studies teacher here in FL now, but we lived in Perry Hall, near White Marsh and she finished while I was in high school there.

The reason I asked about school is because I am a almost 34 year old mother of 2 boys who just graduated from USF last May. I started at CC like you then went on to get my engineering degree. I did the MINNIE last year the morning after I walked across the stage and got my diploma, I still get goose bumps thinking about it. I REALLY hope you are able to come.

Also, my mom who has never done anything like this is going to do the MINNIE 5k with me then I will do 15 next day. So maybe you can talk DD into 5k and you and my mom can chat about school :)

angie

That would be cool; I'd love to talk teaching with her! Especially since after my kids go to college, I'd plan to move back to Florida to teach there.

My mom was supposed to do the 5k with me last week but hurt her hip and hobbled around the parks; the 5k was not something she needed to attempt. But luckily for me, I can make friends anywhere and I found myself some new friends from near Buffalo, on the airplane (hi Patty and Joe if you read this  ) so I had people to run with and learn the ropes. The last race I did was a 10k in 1994!

It would be really cool if I could walk across the stage the same day as I run a race. Heck, I would be tickled if the race was anytime after graduation, but no, it has to be before finals. I'm hoping I get lucky with that week. If I manage to pull this off, will you meet me before the race and hang out with me? I wouldn't expect you to keep my pace  and run with me, just so I'm not standing there like a little lost puppy if my daughter doesn't come through?

Krista--One other thing before I forget. The best part about the third trimester (other than the expectent mother's ever increasing desire to get the thing over with by then and the build up of it definately being the husband's/father's fault for causing your misery), is to be wary of the complete strangers who for some reason think that because you are pregnant, they have the right to go up and touch your belly. It always drove my DW crazy that people some how thought it was OK to do this, like she was a good luck Buddah or something.

Also, I am happy to see that you have someone else to share your Steeler sorrows ... I mean talk about the former days of glory with.

Not only will I hang out with you but there will be a group of WISHers that will all welcome you with open arms. If you are able to schedule it make sure you join us on the MINNIE marathon thread. We keep track of who is going where they are staying and what meets we will plan. Last year we met at Earl of Sandwich on Saturday (I wasn't there I was at graduation :)) then Sunday night after 15 k we went to Jellyrolls !!!! Lots of fun! :)

I am so excited you have joined us and we can be a part of this journey with you

Patsy Bill--Not to make you feel old or anything, but I wasn't even born during the quote, unquote glory days, so I love my Steelers for who they are NOW, not 30 some years ago. Thanks for the baby tips though!

Cool! If I can swing this, I will definitely meet up with all the WISHers and can't wait to hang out with you! I really hope I can manage this. Since I won't have had my surgery yet, I plan to walk it (yeah right, I know I'll run some) but I figure it's more practice for the half. If I end up doing this, I will definitely join the MINNIE marathon thread. Thanks!

For Steve, the best part is being able to buy anything you want and say that it is needed for the baby. Of course the 10" table saw, router, expensive camera, air compressor and drill press are needed, don't know when you might have to rebuild the nursery or something. :rolleyes1

Amy--I have a question for you, I'm not sure if you would know, but since you are a trainer and work in a gym, you were my first thought. :) I'd like to start lifting weights again (I stopped when I found out that I was pregnant), but I'm not sure which weights are safe to do and which ones to avoid. I was thinking leg curls were okay, but leg press might be bad. How much weight should I use? Lots of reps at 10 lbs? 20 lbs? I'd ask my doctor, but he's not super active, so probably wouldn't know. If you can help me in any way, I'd appreciate it. Oh, I have some pilates dvd's at home, are they okay to do?

Krista

Krista: :rotfl: LOVE the Office...love the "little stitious" quote. Too funny. BTW...I have The Office theme song as my ring tone. :thumbsup2

OK...as for working out...first of all it's always best to speak with your OB about exercise :). Most doctors will say that assuming you are having a healthy pregnancy, that you can exercise as long as you were exercising before you got pregnant. In your case, that is definitely true :). As for lifting weights, you can definitely do light arm weights. Lighter weights and more repetitions is always a safe bet. You shouldn't be straining at all, or doing anything that puts undue pressure on your lower back. So keep it light and support your lower back. I'm leery of the leg machines at the gym...i just worry that it will cause too much strain. As for Pilates, I wouldn't recommend doing the videos unless they are specifically for pregnancy. I'm sorry :(. There are a lot of pilates exercises that need to be modified for pre-natal clients and should probably be done with a certified instructor who has worked with pregnant clients. The muscles and ligaments of your transverse abdominals are greatly affected during pregnancy due to hormone changes, some of the pilates exercises work the muscles in such a way that could cause them to pull or tear due to these physiological changes. Therefore all work should be done in a much smaller range of motion, keeping the legs more proximal (closer to your body).

Also, after the first trimester you shouldn't really be doing exercises on your back. In addition...you never want to work in any inversions while pregnant (i.e. lifting your legs over your head).

OK...so hopefully I didn't worry you. I think that Pilates and Yoga is an excellent way to exercise during pregnancy but I would love to see you work with an instructor present versus using a video just to be sure all things you are doing are safe. However, if you purchase videos that are specifically for pregnancy, and you have pilates experience, then by all means proceed carefully and go for it.

Walking and swimming are GREAT forms of exercise to maintain your cardio.

Good luck... :)

TXAng - Congratulations!!!!

Jen - You MUST come to the MInnie!

SHirt Timing - Someone asked about havign them for a SHamrock run. Not likely. The orderign process is usually at least 2 weeks and then another 2 to pay and 6 at teh printer for our current shirt company.

Mel's looking into tech shirts and we'll work together on the best way to proceed when she has more info. Polls will likely be in order.

Amy--Thanks so much for all the info!! I haven't done anything except for walking and moderate running since I found out I was pregnant, so no worries for anything I might have done already. :) I was wondering about the pilates and weights, I am so glad I asked you to double check everything. I have some of the ankle weights, I think they are maybe 10 lbs, I think I'll just use those sitting in a chair at home and do my own modified leg curls. The only reason I was wanting to lift weights now is to prevent injury I might get when I jump back into more serious training this fall. But hopefully if I keep up with running/walking and doing the walking backwards on the treadmill thing Silver Steve advised me to do a long time ago (by the way, thanks for that info, Steve!), then my IT band won't let me down again next January! I wish you weren't so fast and I weren't so slow, I think we'd have a blast running together--talking music and quoting The Office!! :)

As Carrie knows, I love the lime green shirts. As far as I'm concerned, the more radical (women usually refer to this as ugly/but I mean it in the stand out to be seen by our adoring fans sense) and colorful the shirt, the better.

ETA: Krista-Don't worry about making me feel old. I've got a birthday coming up and when I answered DS's question as to how old I was going to be, his response was: "Dude, you're really old." Living in New England, I'm not sure where he exactly picked up the surfer lingo. This is why we parents are always tired.

OOOOO, THe football talk is getting scarry!

Angie - you will be back to your speedy self in no time...you are awesome girl!

OK! I guess I shoud be thinking about what to fix for dinner. I got to work at home today (The plus side of working for myself)so my :laundy: is almost done...oh, but I still have to put it all up. AHHH!

Krista - I did aerobics, "ran", and walked while preg with my 1st....and I was back into my normal clothes in 1 week...but with the 2nd...yeah, not so much. I blame it on the Rocky Road Ice Cream diet though.:rotfl:

Need to bike tonight...on my trainer of course...I don't do 32F and biking!:scared1: Call me a wimp if you must.

Just back from 2.49 miles in 30 min...46% humidity!

I would also like to nominate myself for the dork of the week award. I went into work this morning. Our receptionist asked me if I came into work on charts...well, yes, but thought I might see some patients too. She looked at me like I was nuts and told me I was blocked out for the day. We block out our schedules as far in advance as we can because we have some folks that only see us once a year. I must have requested today off awhile back because of MLK, knowing that the kids would be out of school. Darn waste of a good sleepin'-in day! :sad2:

TXAng...congrats on Sean Michael's arrival!

Jen117...yay for Minnie! Wanna shoot for a 6 min pace? :lmao: Seriously though, last year I did 1:57. I'm going to use the regular MFM half training program so my longest LR is 10 and see if training past the mileage helps.

Krista...yep, what they said. Second trimester is usually the best physically. I played volleyball with Kaley all the way through the end of the 7th month, with Lenna, I was a slug. I tend to be very efficient at storing calories so I just lost the final pound from the first pregnancy last year :rolleyes1 Now I just need to work on that freshman 15 from college ;)

Bree...:wizard: for your sinuses!

Christa...great pace as always! What's on your race calendar for this year? I don't like to go outside if it's below 50 so you're no wimp here ;)

Refurbishing for your future enjoyment:

RaceReady is working up a quote for us. They've said they may be able to cut some of the vneck shirts in lime. The lime crewneck and singlets are stock items and easily done. I'll update when I have more info.

We're also changing things around a bit with the team listing. There will be a separate thread that Lily stickies that has the team list and will allow folks to post a bio and photos if they'd like (thanks to Matt for the great idea). The team listing will move to the new thread and I'll update as always, just won't open the weekly thread with it, unless y'all still want it there as well.

Thank you for inquiring about the lime v-neck tech shirts--I don't wear crew neck t-shirts in public.... ;)

Mel - I love the look of those v-neck t's so fingers crossed that we can get them in lime green. I'd be in!

Given as many WISHers as there are, if they stocked lime all the time in the v-necks it would make it easy for new people who miss the shirt order to still stand out to help us identify them!

My personal question for this week: I think Carrie's planning another shirt order soon. Would anyone be interested in getting WISH team tech shirts in addition to the classic WISH shirt? The last two WDW weekends have been warm and we have folks doing races all over the place and throughout the year so I was thinking something a little lighter in weight. Chester mentioned these guys awhile back and I saw their booth at the Expo:
http://www.raceready.com/men/4050.html
They have mens/womens Tshirts and singlets. Looks like they would do team merchandise for us. I think it would be more expensive than our classic shirts, but would be well worth it for folks training and racing in warmer weather. If anyone's interested, please PM or post.

Mel
I'd really like to have Race Ready W.I.S.H. shirts. Their products are made by runners, for runners. I have a singlet by them that is silk-printed and the images hold up well. But, like most of the tech materials, they are suseptible to runs/pulls. Let me know if you want any help putting this plan to action.
