Wk of Feb 3rd-- WISH Walking/Running Club

Morning WISH Team!

Howard you are amazing putting in those steps with Andy. I know he will have newfound respect for the miles. Congratulations to him on his Life Scout achievement. Congratulations to Jenn for getting in her first 5k. I do WISH that she is making progress as slow and steady so as to not face injury on her first try. Dad, you might need to lead by example for her here. :teeth:

Polar Bear family time for Special Olympics in your future? Brrr if so.

DH and I are getting dressed to go out and put in some steps. He's going with me!

To answer the question about XT. I try to always include Pilates or some way to core strengthen along with other non-impact exercises/strength training.

Off we go. Putting in steps so I can report something before surgery day.

Hello!:wave2:

Can I join in?

I think I am going to do the WDW Half this year so I better get my body moving! (I am going to do it if we get our act in gear and make some decisions and register... LOL!)

I know I am doing the Peachtree 10K in July. And just to give everyone a :rotfl2: I am doing a 10K the end of Febuary......I am SO NOT READY, but I need a time. I found out last year that if you submit ANY time to the Peachtree folks you can get in group 2 or 3. I was in four last year which was fine, but I don't think I can do this race from 9. You don't start until it's hotter then the surface of the sun back there! So my goal for the race in Feb... not to finish dead last. (Which may not be possible!)

This morning I hit the local path I like. It's 3.4 miles and I did it in 50 minutes doing a combo jog/walk. I seem to have lost my pedometer so I didn't really have a way to figure out what I was doing jogging vs walking but I think I jogged more then walked. Fighthing a cold so I was very pleased with my time.

Now I have questions on gear! 1. What do you use to track time/miles? I do a lot of stuff on the Treadmill so that's fine but I guess if I am going to do a half I have to get longer runs...2. What do you use to carry water. My 3.4 is about as long as I can go without water!!!

I am VERY impressed with all the posters on here. :worship:

Hopefully you will keep me motivated for next 11 months!

Thanks!

Carol :welcome: We are so glad you are. As for your questions: I am really bad about all three things you asked about so I will let everyone else give you advice on that stuff. I just wanted to say welcome to the team!!!

Hi team!

I got in 9.44 miles yesterday in JUST under 1:30 (1:29:57 to be exact). It felt pretty good; I've got to get back into it if I'm really doing this half in the beginning of April. The weather was beautiful and it was a great day to run outside - 60 and sunny.

Tonight I'll do some carb loading at a Superbowl party and take out my newbie buddies again tomorrow. It's really fun re-living the start of fitness with other people and it helps me to appreciate how far I've come.

Carol - Welcome! I use a Nike watch for my time (with chrono and interval timer; Timex Ironman 50 lap has the same features). If you're run/walking you probably want to get a watch with an interval timer which will help you to do regular intervals of running/walking. To measure distance I use www.gmap-pedometer.com and have several routes whose distance I use. I don't carry water with me; I plant it along my route.

Happy training, all!
Renee

:welcome: Carol,

I use a Garmin 305. I live in the middle of nowhere, but I often take different routes that lead away from it. The Garmin allows me to download my info, keeps my heart rate, distance, time last lap, currnet lap, time of day, etc. Works anywhere because it uses GPS Technology.

To hydrate I use a camelbak for really long walks and a Ultimate direction fanny for shorter walks. They both allow me to take other items like a cell phone, a throw away rain poncho, an emergency blanket, sunscreen, keys, tear gas, with me etc. Did I mention I live in the middle of nowhere?? :lmao:

Hi Carol!

DH and I also hope to get into the Peachtree this year.

I have a Garmin 205 and it was the best money I've spent since starting running.

I have a Garmin 305 question (since you mentioned it, Connie!) Do you have to use it with the heart rate monitor or can you use it without for just the garmin distance aspect? Thanks!

You can use it without the heart rate monitor. I do that when it's an easy day!

Hi everyone! I helped DS (Andrew) with a Scout Merit Badge project today. It was for the Hiking Merit Badge. He had to hike 20 miles(!) to finish it up. I walked 19 of the 20 and he finished up while I returned home to get ready for an appointment and dinner with friends. This accomplishment will allow Andrew to achieve Life Rank in Scouts. :woohoo:

So, my training for the day: 19 miles walking at a brisk pace.

I am proud of my son for finishing it with no training or preparation. He is feeling it (for sure) and appreciates what his Mom (Cam) does SO much more. ;)

:grouphug:

Howard

WOOHOO DH was the Scoutmaster for over 7 years, both our boys acheived Eagle Scout - not an easy feat - and we know for a fact that Hiking (and Cycling) are THE hardest merit badges to acheive!! WTG!! :lovestruc Love when they can appreciate the "parents" !

Maybe I'll be brave enough and take a class with him next week!
Kathy - Please take the class with him! And for the sake of the WISH team, please sneak in a camera and get some blackmail, I mean, motivating pics for us! :lmao:

I failed miserably trying to get Chad into that Fitness Yoga class with me.
And I think he was the smart one - I am wicked sore and tired today.

Today was going to be a stretch & strengthen day, but I don't dare stretch or strengthen anything right now! :scared1: I am going to instead add some strength on a walk/run day (probably tomorrow) to make up for it.

Hi CarolA!!!

I live near Atlanta! and I love the Peachtree - its a 6.2 mile party. Warning about the front groups: the closer you get to the front, the younger everyone around you gets. I could have been the mother of almost everyone in my group last year!
Make sure you have a copy of your drivers license and a copy of your race time ready and go to the grocery store on Mar 15th. They will have stacks & stacks of the early edition of the AJC and the application is in there. Usually in the sports section but there should be a notice on the front page. Fill it out and go straight to the post office to mail it.

Which 10k are you doing?

I use a Garmin 305 to track miles but before I got my Garmin, I went just on time then came home and tracked my miles. if you go to mapmyrun.com or to the USTAF site you can create your own route and/or just figure out how many miles you just ran.

I have a fuel belt that I bought at Fleet Feet in John's Creek but I think Dick's Sporting Goods carries them too. It wraps around my waist and has three little yellow bottles that I fill with water or powerade. I rarely use more than 2 of these bottles until I am running over 14 miles but I drink a bunch when I am finished.

Just a note...I'm in Atlanta too and usually do the Peachtree...HOWEVER...due to water restrictions, the race will NOT conclude in Piedmont Park this year

They don't have a new route planned yet, but word on the street has Turner Field involved :sad2:

You can follow the story in both ajc.com and the Atlanta Track Club website. Makes me hesitant to sign up this March.

Have a good day!

Thanks

I did it last year so I pretty much know what to expect and I expect to be in Group 3 if I get in and I will be at the back of that. My boyfriend actually handles the application process, he is in group 1A LOL! (With the youngsters, but he is pretty fast for someone in his mid 40's) Last year he waited on me. He told me "we won't have any problem finding each other, it's not crowded in the park" :rotfl2: YEAH he had never seen it crowded because he is finished and home before I cross the finish line. (We did find each other and he admitted it was crowded)

I don't do Peachtree for time... I do it for the T SHIRT!!!!

Wonder where we are going to end up this year? Could be an interersting year!

We are doing the Chuck Harris 10K in Tucker on 2/23 (I think that's the date)

The boyfriend is "thinking" about doing the WDW Half with me.... I really just wanted him to come cheer. As he puts it, he will be done, cleaned up and back at the finish line to greet me by the time I finish LOL! Of couse I started jogging at 46 and he started at 20 so he has a few years experience on me!

About the Peachtree, can I put DH and my apps in the same envelope or should I mail them separately?

So you just drop it off in the box at the Post Office Saturday night? Is it better to go to a Post Office that is closer to the Atlanta Track Club's office?

Well I actually sent the Piedmont Conservancy group an email today asking why they thought people would want to donate to their cause to ENLARGE a park we can't use???? (This was after I saw an add on TV today!) (They claim it's not thier fault, but.... my Grandparents used to live near the park. The truth is that the folks who live there don't want the "riff raff" messing up thier park!)

And of course GA Tech claims 55,000 racers are a "security threat" Of course if we wanted to pay to go to a football game we would not be a "security threat" :lmao:

I think Randy puts both of our applications in one enveleope but I will ask tonight and post the response.

I actually don't think it's First come/First served, but you have to be in by a certain date and IF it's oversold they "lottery" (Rumor was no one got left out last year!)

I have taken my application to the box at the Post Office on Sunday morning each year and haven't had any issues. I live in Canton so I don't think proximity to the ATC offices should be an issues :)

I'm totally with you Carol!! It's also funny to me that the cut off is an event over 50,000...but there won't ever be 50,000 at one time in that park after the race! I bet there is no more than 12-20,000 at any one given time.

Can't believe they cannot make an exception for the largest 10k in the WORLD!

Good Evening Team

Did anyone just see the new Under Armour shoes on the Super Bowl commercial. I soooooo hope they make good running shoes, I love all things Under Armour.

OK training update: I RAN 3 MILES!!!:cool1: Averaged a 10 min pace, still good considering where I have been. Also really good considering how sore I was from the cardio class I took yesterday. Seriously my whole body hurt today :scared: So I'm thinking you aren't supposed to be that sore after a XT training day :confused3 Oh well, I'm sick but I miss being "sore" from a good work out.

OK off to watch the big game.

Krista and Steve – CONGRATS! Hearing baby’s heartbeat for the first time was one of the most exciting parts of pregnancy for me. How many more weeks until you go in for an ultrasound? Are y’all going to find out the gender?

Howard – Very cool for your son!

Vic – Hope you’re feeling better soon!

Carol – :welcome: I use a Garmin 205 to track my miles. No advice on the water, though – I’m sure you’ll get lots of input from others on that.

I've got nothing to report at all. Feeling a lot better this week, which is good, but by the time we get baby to sleep, I'm too tired to even think about getting out and walking.

I cannot believe that he's already 3 weeks old. Time shouldn't go by this quickly!!

Checked. Both of our applications went in the same envelope....

Angietuck2, I tried to convince my boyfriend that the reason he didn't look like the guys in UnderArmor commerical is that he buys cheap "Target" brand. (Well, genetics and steroids might be an issue too!):rotfl2:
