Wk of Feb 18--WISH Walking/Running Club

Greetings TEAM:

Claire- Good to see you back. Don't be a stranger.

Mike/goofyguy1958- I'm sorry to hear that your wife is still out of work since the accident. Here's WISHing she recovers quickly. Good job on keeping up with your training.

Kristi- Whoo hooo!!! :cool1: Congrats on running 1/2 mile straight. That is fantastic. Interesting sign on the gym about the tread climbers. I think I saw an ad for those on TV the other night, and they looked like a good workout. 6 or more cans of Diet Coke in a day? Wow! No wonder you can make it in for those early mornings at work.

Laurie- Hey, you're up in our neck of the woods! Well, not really mine, I'm probably 5 hours from Lake Placid, but it's NY, right? Give a wave to Sara when you drive down through the Lake George area. How's the weather over there? We're getting rain here.

Krista- Drink water, water, water... just kidding, but I remember you saying you were getting dehydrated in your marathon training last year. Not to nag, but I think being properly hydrated is going to help your muscles (and IT band) too.

Lily- Nice running skirt. It looks good! But is the pink camo going to go with the WISH gear? Yeah, I guess it will. Thanks for the picture. Good job getting your workout in when everything was working against you at the gym. Don't push it too hard on the TM. Sounds like your knee's still resisting a little.

Jim- If you've been sore for a long time, then I think your muscles are asking for a break. If you're worried about losing cardiovascular fitness, you could try doing only x-training over the next 2 weeks to maintain your cardio. I think it's a good idea to give your legs a break. You've been doing a lot lately, and they would probably respond better when you gear up for the marathon training again. Just my opinion...

Angie- Congratulations on getting the job! That's awesome! Hope it doesn't cut down on your WISH time.

Craig- Hope you're starting to feel better. I was always getting sick from the students when I was teaching at Middlebury. Of course, I wasn't taking as good care of myself as I am now. Wash hands, wash hands, wash hands...

Stephanie- Good TM workout - pretty gross about the guy spraying sweat though. Whaaa??? run leading toes to heel? I've never heard that before either. So he was giving his daughter the advice to essentially run on her toes? That's crazy... maybe that works if you are sprinting the 100 meters, but I don't think that's going to work long term.

Jackie- Great TM workout! Congrats on running 10 min straight. That's fantastic. WTG :thumbsup2

Cam- Oh no, not shin trouble!!! It is my bain and nemesis... the tae kwon do I've been doing with DD9 the past 2 weeks now kind of makes my shin sore. Good job getting your 4 miles in on the TM. Ice those shins or take ibuprofen. Oh, I hope the shins don't become a problem for you. They were so painful for me last year.

TXAng- Good job on making it to the gym and for a great workout. WTG. :thumbsup2

Mike/Optimator- Thanks for the advice to be careful shoveling the roof. Believe me, I hear ya'. Wow, 12 miles on a TM. I don't think I can do that. I think 5-6 miles is about my limit of tolerance on the TM. Good for you! So what part of the country are you in Mike?

OK that's it for me now. I guess I need to get ready for work if DW is staying home with the princesses princess: princess: today. Have a great day all.

Stephanie

The guy officially is a fool. Running up on your toes is hard on your lower legs and doesn't make you any faster. Watch any elite runner at any distance, and you'll observe they don't run like that.

On the other hand you don't want to pound down on your heels and then slowly rolll forward and off your toes. That places a huge amount of force on your lower legs, also leading to injury. Sometimes when I'm on a treadmill a person next to me sounds like an elephant. THUD, THUD, THUD. When you watch them they strike so hard on the heel that they seem to pause, losing all momentum, before rolling forward. They also are making their strides too long, increasing that pounding on the heels and legs.

You want to strike heel first and quickly roll forward and push off with your toes. Ideally the strike should be gentle, your heel shouldn't be on the ground long, you should very quickly roll forward, and then push off with your toes. If you listen to a really efficient runner they hardly make a sound, and their footstrike is very fast. We normal folks probably won't look or sound so efficient, but good technique reduces stress on the legs and increases speed.

I wouldn't have said anything either. His coaching will cause discomfort to his daughter and she'll either modify her strides or breakdown.

Craig

Dave,

I'm in northern Virginia. About 30 miles west of D.C.

Not as much snow here as in some parts, but our several inches melted just enough to refreeze. We've got about 2-3 inches of rock hard solid ice everywhere. I saw a few driveways where people didn't shovel the first morning of the snow last Tuesday. Their cars are parked on top of the snow/ice. Not a den. Not a tire track. That's why I don't think I'll be running anywhere outside this week. We'll see.

I'm impressed with you taking tae kwon do with your daughter. I guess I'd be forced to do it with mine also. My DD10 is already about 5'1" and mean as a snake. I certainly wouldn't want her to be able to know enough tricks to kick my butt.

I just have to pop in say say that Lily - I LOVE that outfit!
Too bad redheads cannot wear pink! Maybe they make a blue camo skirt...
You are now officially the WISH model!

And if anyone is vaguely interested in what this tread climber thing is...
http://www.treadclimber.com/global/...030988&bmUID=1172061252198&adID=DOAGOOGTQ107B
I may try it out today! Today is xt day & although it's still walking, I'll count this.

Got my Curves XT in last night. I have decided to do an extra "lap" around the circuit to have a little longer workout. Hoping to run outside today. Temp is great, just waiting to see about rain.

Kristi-AWESOME!!!!!!:cheer2: My mom wants one of those tread climber things, but I dont know anyone who has actually used it.

Cam-good luck with the shoes, you so deserve to find the perfect shoe for you!

Stephanie-I agree, why would you run that way?

Lily-that is sooooo cute! Looks great on you!

Jackie-great job on the run!!:thumbsup2

TxAng-great job on getting to the gym & pushing yourself!

Angie-congrats on the new job!!!

Lily,

You look great! Now I am going to have to set a goal to buy myself a skirt! Please let us know how they feel during the workout.

Maggie

Cam-- I hope you solve your shoe problem real quick:wizard: I know nothing about orthotics, but could that be a solution?

Lily-- what Kristi said! You are the new WISH model:) I knew you couldn't resist a double dog dare:lmao:

Angie-- Wow, you didn't waste anytime getting a job! Congrats:thumbsup2

Dave-- you are a great dad:cloud9: Your DDs will always remember the special times they got to have with their Dad. I second the "agony of defeat" roof thing-- please be careful! Based on your location and the fact that you will be running more Disney marathons, you will probably do some very long TM runs in the future. Never say never!

Lauire-- My apologies for calling you Laura in an earlier post. I get confused easily.

Kristi-- Awsome job on the run! They have two of those tread climbers at the Y. I tried one once. My opinion is that they are great for a really serious walking workout, but I don't think I could run on them because when you run your feet land closer together and I worried I'd step off of the inner edge.

Mike-- I didn't realize your wife's accident was so bad. I am so sorry. I hope things improve for you both real soon.

Mel-- Congrats on passing you exam:banana: Not that I had any doubts anyway!

Judy-- What's with the work thing? Don't these employers understand we have more important things to do!!!! I hope you get more breaks. The thread just isn't the same without your wit.

Carrie-- TM alert! I discovered that Propel sports bottles can be very startling on the TM. I drank from mine and must have squeezed it out of shape. I put it back in the holder and quite some time later it popped back into shape making a very loud abrupt noise that caused me to jerk my head as well as the person next to me:guilty: Heads up!

I got a 3 miler in yesterday: 34:39, avg pace 11:33. That's alot slower than I was doing two weeks ago, but it included my full warm up and cool down due to time constraints. Today will either be another 3 miler or my xt.

Sunny

Hi Everyone -
Wow, 5 pages in one day! We are not slowing down at all.
I am off on a field trip with 300 fifth graders. What was I thinking when I signed up for this? Two long days on a greyhound bus with 70 excited kids. And where are we going? Plains, Ga - 7 miles from where I lived for 5 years. stupid stupid stupid me.

Maria- I am not really sure how to answer your question. It depends a great deal on how you want to spend the next 5 months before "official" training begins. Most half marathon programs have you starting with a fairly low amount of weekly miles and building up from there. Personally, I think you would benefit from running more now while you are motivated and it is still exciting. You will hit some slumps over the year, but it will be easier to get back on track if you are already ahead of the program. As long as you build mileage slow and steady and rest when your body tells you, do what feels good.

Cam - :scared1: You forgot your coffee??!! Here I was fresh from the bathroom with a stomach issue and I still managed to down my mandatory two cups before the race! I am now even more impressed with your performance!:worship:

Goofyguy - Way to go on getting those miles in. I know it must be tough with DW still recovering. I hope she heals quickly.

Krista & Kristi - Diet coke! :scared1: Sigh. DS's first grade class just did an experiment with several different drinks and what they do to your body and teeth. DS6 regaled us at dinner with the details of what diet coke did to the organ meats they put in it. Ah well, as vices go, diet coke is pretty minor. (Note: I am the woman who showed up for all her OB appointments with baby #3 with a large coffee from the store next door. My OB would shake his head and say "You are a bad influence on my first time mothers." & He is a perfectly normal little boy even if he likes to gross us out at the dinner table.)

Jim - I was just reading about this in an old issue of runners world. They highly advised taking time off from running after a marathon but said that you should continue to cross train. There were some great benefits to taking at least a two week break and then tapering back into your normal run routine.

Angie - Congratulations on your new job. Take a deep breath and enjoy!
Mel- Congratulations on Passing your exam!
Lily - that skirt looks awesome on you , thanks for sharing the pictures! Tell us how you like running in it.

Cecilia

Angie – Congrats on the new job that is fantastic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Lily – That skirt looks soooooo nice on you! Mine came in last night too. I got the Black and Smooch gym style (black on top/smooch under) and the smooch shirt you were modeling. The skirt fit great but the shirt is not comfortable so I’m going to return it for a different size.

I took the rest day as required on the couch to 5K but tonight I'm running come H.E. double hockey sticks or high water. Auditors better get out of my way by 5pm! It is going to be 52 here today!!!!!! That is a major heat wave :cool2:

OMG, this is a lot of notes fro just being gone over night!

Laurie - DH and I used XC skiing as our LR a coulpe weeks ago. Not qquite the same, but I think it's close eonough adn worked some muscles that needed alittel extra too.

Kristi - Woo hoo!!!! COngrats on teh 6 min! I know 1 min was forever when I started!!!

Jim - Rest sounds liek a VERY good idea. Way to listen to your body!

TXAng - 60 is ok, but not much above. ;) I di dlove TX in November, but 70 was still on the hot side fo rme. Then again, I shopped and played with TXBElle & family, so it had to be great! Great job on yur work out!

Lily - You look great, as usual. My skirt came last Friday. I really lie it. DOwn to teh pocket in teh pants with the button hole fro MP3 cords. Very cool.

Note to anyone who wants to buy a TRIKS skirt: If you are at all modest, go for the GymGirtl, not the MarathonGirl. GG is an inch higher in teh waist adn an inch longer on teh thighs and this made a huge diff on me. Plus, th e GG has built in compression pants. I was afraid tehy might be too short, btu I think they will eb just fine.

Angie - COngrats!!!! Don't be nervous. I'm afraid you'll be disappointed on how little real engineering real engineers do. ;) You'll be great!

Craig - I think 40 to 50 degrees wis wher I hit my prime. It was funny after marathon, though. 20 degress felt like heaven! :cloud9: Hope you're back to 100% soon. DH and I both had that adn it was awful.

jackie - Great job on teh qwork out!

Goofyguy -OMG. I did not realize your dw was still off work. :wizard: :wizard:

Sunny - lol on teh TM alert. I know it won't happen on my TM, as I don't htink I could drink on the TM any more. I'll keep an eye out for those around me, though. ;)

Cecelia - OMG! 300 5th graders? :wizard: I'm gussing htat's your XT for the day!

Cam - Bummer that the shoes are not teh perfect ones. At least you can feel what your toe box should be like. OMG, I cannot believe your toes were bumping. Then again, after seeing your feet, I guess I can. :( Good luck! I think the 2110s and teh Kayanos feel very soft Don't think I've tried Evolutions.

Mike - OMG. 12 miles on the TM. I max out at 1 hour. More, and I would lose my mind.

Tiff - WTG on the extra lap at Curves. I've heard that after 20 minutes, you're burning all fat. WOo hoo!

Stephanie - He's nuts. You are absolutely correct.

I ran outside last night! 3.38 miles at 10:28 pace! After Saturday, I was worried that my 10:30 gaol for teh minn ie was out of my reach. I'm stillnot sure, but feeling better about it. DH did remind me that it's a little early to be that worried about oace,m though. Especially, as I'll train like I would for the half and that scheudle has still not caught up with what we're doing yet. Then again, we were supposed to do 40 min last night, but ran out of clear path.

I just have to pop in say say that Lily - I LOVE that outfit!

I may try it out today! Today is xt day & although it's still walking, I'll count this.
Kristi- That was definitely the ad I saw on TV. I remember now it was a Bowflex machine. It kind of looked like a similar workout to an elliptical to me. I'll be curious to hear your report on it.

TXAng – woohoo!!!! Great job on those intervals! :woohoo: :yay:

Jim – since you don’t have anything demanding in the imminent future, I agree that you should take it easy. Now would be a great time to explore other hobbies or interests or other ways of staying fit to fill all those hours you aren’t “training.” ;)

Mike – welcome to my world! I did a 20 mile training “LR” on the TM last fall. UGH! I suggest planting yourself in front of a tv with something you are interested in, putting some great music in your ears, and having a magazine at hand. Also, I had to remind myself that even though I wasn’t out on the roads doing those LW/Rs I still had to provide my body with nourishment, so I took breaks for bananas, cliff blocks, energy bars, etc. Good luck.

Thanks, everyone, for the good wishes on the shoes. Nothing hurts today, so maybe it is just a matter of getting used to them.

Oh, and Craig, I am so glad you chimed in about how the foot should strike. I think you advised me almost 2 years ago on that and it made all the difference in the world for me, as far as foot alignment and how to push off. I have to re-train myself about the non-thud heel strike, though, since I can tell I am hitting the ground too hard with my heel. I think the heel of these new shoes is a bit lower than the new balance ones and that may be why it feels different.

Sunny – interesting you should mention orthotics. The guy who fit me on Saturday strongly recommended them because I am so flat footed. He said I should be able to find over-the-counter ones that would make a difference, but I know somewhere in the chaos that is my dressing room dresser there are custom fit orthotics that cost me a small fortune a few years ago. I think I will locate those and try to do a mile or so in them and see if that makes a difference. Thanks, sweetie!

Dave – so glad you are enjoying your dad time, but I’m glad you have a camp co-counselor today!

Carrie – I am so glad you got outside for a run. I know that is so much more enjoyable for you. :goodvibes:

WOW! I was away for 2 days and now I can't keep up.

To those who haven't been feeling well pixiedust: here's a little pixie dust to make you feel better.

For those with sore feet, knees or just need a little break  , I hope you recover soon.

:cheer2: happy birthday and happy anniversary!

:dance3: congrats on the new job!

  Way to go on the awesome running/walking times.

:cutie: cute outfit!

The weather got a lot warmer yesterday, so I walked 4 miles. My time was a little limited, but I just had to get out. It felt great to feel the sun on my face rather than the blistering windchill we've had the last 2 weeks. Last night I placed an order on Amazon and ordered a few books to help add running to my walking routine. Now that there is a touch of spring in the air, I know it won't be long before I'll be spending more time outside. :woohoo:

Wishing you all a great day!

Cam - IIRC, you need to break orthodics in, so don't push too much in them.

Today is a rest day and well, you don't have to tell me twice! Actually, I should have had a make-up day since I missed two work-outs last week, but just last night Charlie read in Running For Dummies that if you miss a workout you shouldn't try to make it up. OK, well, I wasn't going to argue.

Carrie - Great pics...:cold:

Mike - I'm glad to see you! :wizard: for DW. :rotfl: "mean as a snake" :lmao:

Kristi - Whoo hoo! :woohoo: You GO girl!

Laurie - Pictures! :yay: We want pictures!

Lily - Oh how pretty! :cloud9: Oh now I REALLY have skirt envy.....OK I just might have to buy one.

Angie - Congratulations! :woohoo: That's fabulous!

Jackie - Glad I could be of service! ;) I think maybe a picture of you on my TM might motivate me...

Judy-- What's with the work thing? Don't these employers understand we have more important things to do!!!! I hope you get more breaks. The thread just isn't the same without your wit.

Oh Sunny! That was so sweet! Thank you!

OK, now it's official....I hate my job.

My chances of keeping up with this thread for the next few weeks are officially slim to none. The new pc we bought isn't compatible w/dh's work stuff, so we have to get another model, and knowing dh that could take awhile. So, I will just pop in quickly at work. On the bright side, at least I don't have to completely give up on chatting.

Thanks to everyone who had advice for me about proceeding through training to train. My problem is I just don't feel like I'm doing enough if I'm not sore and miserable. I know, that doesn't sound right, does it?

Anyway, I'm really enjoying reading everyone's posts.

Congratulations to the newly employed!
Congratulations to last weekend's racers!
Good health and wellness to everyone working on a recovery!
And here's a little encouragement for anyone who needs it!

Let's Go Team!
Maria

Angie: congratulations on the job!! :woohoo:

Lily: I LOVE the skirt and you model it very well! :teeth:

Cam: absolutely find those custom orthodics and break them in again slowly. I had some made a couple years ago and it really did take me about a month and a second visit to get them right. Unfortunately insurances doesn't pay for the orthodics and due to the way my HMO is constructed, insurance won't pay for me to go to the sports podiatrist. And I really need to be re-evaluated.

Carrie: great pictures of the arctic tundra! :rotfl2: We'll be wanting some of that come August!! And great job on the 10:28 pace! :woohoo: But I'm going to have a VERY difficult time keeping up with you during Minnie. I need to get moving faster....

Monte: how much snow did you get with the recent storm and how much in on the ground? Did you get some snow shoeing in over the weekend?

DreamBeliever: I am SO jealous that you got outside! Not much chance of that here for a while.

Day with my trainer today. She is merciless but I love every minute of it. Cardio work and weights. Tomorrow I'll do some cardio to keep the hip loose.

Hope everyone is having a great day!

Thanks everyone for the replies that I'm not totally crazy! Just back from the gym--3.13 miles ave 6.3mph--taking it easy. DH is sick now! Ugh, we just can't catch a break!
