Wk of Feb 18--WISH Walking/Running Club

Drive-by...

:welcome: Brett! Sounds like this isn't your first race. What type of training program do you use?

Carrie...what's all that white, sandy-lookin' stuff? I don't think I own enough layers to do that race

Cam...you'll make Andrew proud just by being out there. Just think of all the moms that wont even start the race.

Well, I can still practice for another 6 years...I PASSED MY EXAM!!!!! :dance3:

Greetings - :)

I'm not liking my new job responsibilities. I don't have time to keep up with these threads. I feel very disconnected from everyone. :guilty:

My L/R this past weekend was 5 miles on the TM. The weather has finally gotten a little better here so I think I can head outside on Saturday for a L/R on the streets. This morning I did 45 @ 1% with 30 @ 3.8 and 10 @ 4.0 then 5 @ 5.0. Sure wish I could find my motivation and enthusiasm, though. I sure do miss 'em. :sad2:

ETA: YAY MEL!!! YAY!

Cam - I agree with Mel. Repeat after me DLF (DLF) > DNF (>DNF) >> DNS (>>DNS)

Mel - Woo hoo!!!! :cool1: Wouldn't want advice from some random, unlicensed internet poster. :rotfl: Yeah, I didn't think that race would make it on your list.

Judy - Job, schmob. We miss you!

BTW, the weather was really not that bad Saturday. It was in the mid touppers 20s, and not too windy. Not for our southerners, but I know all our northerners, eaterners adn maountainpeople would have been fine. Snow started melting yesterday, though, and is continuing today. So, we're hoping to do our LR outside tonight. Yay!

YEA MEL!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Never a doubt knew you would be fine!:cheer2:

CAM - Please don't be worried about your 5K. Take a peak a year ago heck 2yrs ago and see how far you've come. I think you'll be very pleased :goodvibes

JUDY - I bet getting out there in the sunshine to do an outside run will be just the ticket. WISH I was close enough to come do it with you

Carrie--love the race pics. It looks really pretty--unfortunately, I would've just been watching from my car!:lmao: Funny how this is only my first winter back down south in 4 years, and those brutal Wisconsin winters are a distant memory.;)

Cam--Can I get a shirt with "I'm the fast woman your mother warned you about" ??? I love that! And I am so with you on the coffee! After the race on Sat. I asked my parents where the after race food/drink was and if they knew if there was any coffee. But my lovely parents had already loaded the thermos up with Starbucks for me! Guess everyone knows my addiction!

Mel--Congrats!!!!:cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2:

Judy--glad to hear that you're still around! Sorry work is bogging you down!

Well, I just signed up for a series of running clinics held around the state for women. It's a pretty neat deal. In different cities all over the state, they hold FREE running clinics for women--starting with those who just want to start running/walking all the way to advanced runners wanting to improve their times. And it ends with a 5K, sort of a graduation! So we'll see--I signed up as an "advanced runner", trying to improve my short distance time.

Mel: congrats on passing! We all knew you could do it.

FungLu: :welcome: You are gonna LOVE this group. Kudos for you in turning down dessert. It's not fun, but it's good for you!

Cam: here's some PD for the new shoes-- pixiedust: According to the sports podiatrist I went to a couple years ago, you should be running in shoes that are 2 sizes larger than your regular shoe. Now, my feet are long enough as it is, so 2 whole sizes added to that make me trip! So I run in 1 size larger. The local running store I go to really does insist on 2 sizes, but I talk them into 1.

Carrie: great pix! I do hope you get some warmer weather soon to melt some of that away! We're in 40 degree weather right now. I'll take it but too bad this wasn't the weather over the weekend so I could run outside!

This is an off day for me so not much to report. Have a great day everyone!!

Mel – Congratulations, sweetie! party: :woohoo: :rockband: :yay: :cheer2: I am so happy for you! Pressure is off for 6 years!!!!

Judy – I think those workouts are pretty darn awesome! I barely manage that when I AM motivated. Just keep it up! You are doing great. And just think – only 75 days until Minnie (or something like that!)

Stephanie – sounds like you and I will get along just fine! We’ll be the ones showing up at the start with thermoses of coffee! :drinking1 Actually, my Minnie packlist now includes large disposable coffee cups and lids! :lmao: Did I mention that I FORGOT to drink my coffee on marathon morning? Just how absent-minded did I have to be to do that? ;) I think my system went into shock!

Thanks to everyone for reminding me about DLF>DNF>>DNS. I am not sure Andy will want to wait at the end with all his future track team mates waiting for his mom to finish! :) It’s funny now to look at results from past years on the races I am planning to do and say, “okay, if I were doing my current pace in last year’s race, I’d have finished . . . “ Now, I just have to hope that not everyone else on those lists has improved their paces, too!

Angie, no green WISH under armor strings? I’m afraid if I told DH about them that he “might” think them appropriate and rush right out and get one for me. Now that would be scary! Hope you had a Happy Birthday! Good luck on the job interview.

Carrie, the pics you posted make me feel cold. Ouch.

Kathy, I’m thinking of you. I know you said something about snow and shoulder. I’m hoping your shoulder didn’t get to much overuse with the snow. Is it OK?

Maria, I think Carrie gave you a great answer. For a little additional insight, if you get a chance to review some training plans you will see similarities in the weekly training and the LR weekends. The similarities consist of: Time runs during the week, speed work or hill work one day alternating weeks, cross training being something fun, strength training especially core strengthening for walkers/runners. Some plans are a little more intense, but they all get you there. (Across that finish line). It won’t matter what your ability level, most runners/walkers will follow similar plans but they will do so at their speed/ability level. It’s interesting to me. We all train similarly. I just go slower!

Mel, great news on passing that exam!

Judy, sorry about the job taking away from your DIS time. They should know it’s a great stress reliever.

Martha, I never knew that about the 2-size shoe thing. I learn something new every day, but I don't think 2 sizes would work for me either, I'd be so tripping or that arch thing would be so wrong. I don't get it.

I've been trying to post this for a while, so if I've missed ya I'm sorry.

Mel LOL can we get the new gear personalized?? hehe
Liz you are an inspiration!
Matt wow! nice race. which HM are you doing in New Orleans?
Angie congrats! taking 16 min off is amazing
Ashley i think runners just find a zone and dont realize the hilarious faces that they make. personally i have a tendency to break into a grin a random times--everyone probably thinks that im goofy!
Christa nice pace! especially on hills
Jen PD to get to feeling better
Angie where did yall go that they whip cream them for b-days?
Melissa you went in thigh-high water when there is ice around??? you are crazy! but i'm liking the idea of biscuits with jelly on the race course! is that 8 hours 11 min??? wow. PD for your knee. they have an article in Runner's World this month on the knee and some strengthing exercises that you might want to check out.
Jim great race! shaving 27 min is amazing!
Cam PD for feeling better. hopefully the shoes will be just the fix!
Stephanie PD for beating the strep
Melissa maybe he picked it up at the drive thru beer store (right next to the drive thru daquiri place!)?!
Carrie fun race!

gee! i thought that getting honked at was just a college town, obnoxious college boys thing....guess not!

Right now I'm training for a Race for the Cure 5K Mar 10 then the New Orleans Crescent City Classic 10K the day before Easter. I did both last year and they are fun. I've kicked it up to jogs instead of jog/walks....well see how long this lasts! I would like to do a Marathon June 16 or 23 or so but I can't find any nearby. Perhaps the fact that it will be sweltering at that point has something to do with it! I am thinking of using the summer to train for a Century Ride and then find one to ride at the end of summer. I dont think I'm going to be able to do WDW this year because I will be student teaching in the fall and I dont know what my life will be like....but my friend told me she wants to run in it so perhaps I could be persuaded hehehehe!

Im giving up sweets and desserts for Lent....I may die especially considering my b-day is in march! can you say "birthday lasagna?!"

Kristi – you wear a 9.5? You’re such a tiny little thing! :rotfl:
Yet another reason I love ya! "Tiny little thing?" - ha! :rotfl:

Mel
- CONGRATS!!!!

Judy - glad to see you check in. Please make your work understand how important you are to this thread! And like Lily said, it's a great stress reliver.

I am off for 4.5 miles at the Y. I am going to try the TM and hope for no mishaps. I haven't been on a TM in almost a year. I really want to try to slow down my running intervals to see if I can run longer. I think my asthma might have something to say about that though.

Cam - I refer to my running shoes as SKIS!!!! But seriously, they feel fine when I run. I see my little toes through the messy front and all the wiggle room they have, and yet I am fine. And even tho my nickname is Grace, as long as I am watching what I am doing, I don't trip with them. I do have a pair that is a 10.5, and I think I may like that size a bit better, but I did run the 1/2 in 11's with no problem at all.

HEY CLAIRE!!!! Glad to see you back... thanks for keeping me company before the start of the 1/2. I am so glad you got your GOOFY!!!!

Mel - Congrats on passing the test. All the more reason to splurge on some new undies!!!!

Judy - Yah, my job prevents me from posting at times.... but then I just ignore the little voices yelling and do it anyway!!! Hope you can find the motivation.... I think mine is hanging out with yours, so please send her home if you can!!!!

Oh and you guys are too funny about the coffee. After a race I want a cold Coke!!!!

Matt wow! nice race. which HM are you doing in New Orleans?

The Mardi Gras Marathon -> LINK

HM course is part loop part out and back, but the OnB part seems like nice scenery with the river on one side and a huge park on the other. The marathon looks pretty brutal, you basically run right past the HM finish and then have to do one looooong 13 mile OnB for the second half. Sounds like the finish is outside the Superdome instead of inside as they had done at least one previous year which is a bummer.

We're stayin at the Country Inn and Suites for $131 after tax + $23 for parking for one night... :scared1: The only cheaper places had taglines like "stay away" and "death trap" on tripadvisor... That and it's centrally located between the start/finish, Harrah's casino, the riverwalk, and only a couple blocks from the French Quarter. DW has never been to NO, so it should be fun.

When you visit New Orleans, make sure you stop at Café du Monde, and have Café au lait and Beignets for me please. Mmmm!

Leana – WTG on your run! That St. Patrick’s Day 5K sounds like fun.

Stephanie – Take care of yourself! Glad to hear that you’re feeling better today.

Jen – I’ve ordered pink Mickey crocs, which are probably even less appropriate than bright red. And that's not going to stop me from wearing them. :)

Tiff – Congrats on a new PR!!

Lily – Sorry your workout left you so sore! I know how that goes, and it’s NOT fun.

Angie – How did the interview go?

Carrie – Great race report! Love all the photos. Y’all are way tougher than I am. Just the thought of ice or snow leaves me a little chilled.

Dave – Have fun with the kids!

Sunny – Pumpkin? That’s just silly!

FungLu - :welcome:

Cam – Three 5Ks in one month? Sounds like a busy schedule for you! I bet DS will be happy that you’re there. That definitely makes you a cool mom.

Mel – Congrats on the exam! :yay:

Well, my calves are still sore today, but not nearly as bad. I didn't go to the gym last night, because I didn't want to push it. But I think I'm feeling well enough to go tonight, so wish me luck!

Angie, no green WISH under armor strings? I’m afraid if I told DH about them that he “might” think them appropriate and rush right out and get one for me. Now that would be scary!

Lily -- I double dog dare you! I have pix of you in my photo album in the WISH tee shirt and the WISH socks. What do you think of being the fashion model for the latest WISH gear? ;)

Jen – I’ve ordered pink Mickey crocs, which are probably even less appropriate than bright red. And that's not going to stop me from wearing them. :)
. . . . . .

Angie -- I ordered the pearl with pink straps and they arrived SUNDAY!! I also ordered tinkerbell and Minnie jibbitz for Minnie weekend, of course! However, I kind of wish I'd ordered the pink. Howard characterized this color as grey and he is pretty close. Not really so much an off-white as maybe a dirty-snow! :confused3 Thanks for the positive feedback on the 5k's. The only problem is that my distances are supposed to be longer on all those dates in training for the Minnie. So, I will have to force myself to make up the difference each weekend.

I am glad your calves are a bit better. Don't forget to stretch really well so that you don't end up with charliehorses. You may even want to consider rubbing your calves a bit to stretch those muscles before you put them to the test. Good luck! :thumbsup2

Carrie – Great race report! Love all the photos. Y’all are way tougher than I am. Just the thought of ice or snow leaves me a little chilled.
Thanks, but you should see how quickly I melt when temps get over 60. :sad2:

Coffee adn coke after arces? Yuck. Water in Poweradfe is al lI can handle. DH would like his COke with bacon and eggs, though!

Lily -- I double dog dare you! I have pix of you in my photo album in the WISH tee shirt and the WISH socks. What do you think of being the fashion model for the latest WISH gear? ;)
:scared: (nothing personal, Lily. I really don't care to see anyone model those!)

With all that is going on (DW is still out of work from accident last year) I am reduced to visiting boards once or twice a week for minimal time. So sorry for the drive by but wanted to get a post in on yesterday's 8.5 miles on the TM in 1:15 and today's 4.5 miler in 36:20 (actually got outside in the slop - felt great).

Great training all.

Drive by....

I just did 4.5 miles on the treadmill. I know now why I have been avoiding the TM and opting for the roller derby (a.k.a. indoor track) - I forgot how freakin' slow I am on the TM compared to a track or outdoors! It took me 1:20:54 to finish wogging 4.5 miles. And I was sweating like never before.

I do have happy news to report! I ran for 6 mins. straight - half a mile - no stopping!!! That may not seem like alot to most of you, but after a year at this, I have not been able to run more than 2 mins. at a time. So, my little experiment about forcing myself to run slower on the TM worked. I think I am going to do my mid-week runs on the TM (even though I HATE the slower times) to try to train myself to run slower intervals, but for longer time periods.

Also, I actually warmed up & cooled down. I never do that on the track. I just get out there & start right away. I consider walking to my car, my cool down.

Question for all you TM experts - do any of you use one called a Tread Climber? We have two of those at the gym and they look interesting. There was a sign behind them that said something to the effect of them being a 'TM for runners at a walker's pace.' I was wondering if that was something I should look into for my TM days...

goofyguy1958 - I did not realize your DW still was out of work since her accident. Lots of hugs for both of you!
