Wk of Feb 18--WISH Walking/Running Club

Cam - I hate to say this, but I don't know that the people in your Delaware store believe that you do marathons. If your toe is right up to the end, that is bad. IMO you need at least 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch. I usually wear 7.5 or 8 and wear a 9 in my running shoes. I also recently discovered that the Kinsei's that I hated wer only an 8.5. That could have been the problem.

Melissa & Jim - Great runs! You have much to be proud of :goodvibes

Jen - I'm glad your OK. Years ago, a group of us from work used to go to a healthclub in our building during lunch. My boss was watching TV while jogging on the TM. Well ... I don't know what he was watching ... but ... he let out a loud cheer, raised his arms and stopped dead in his tracks. Needless to say, he flew off the back end of the TM. After we realized only his pride was hurt, we all got a good laugh out it :rotfl:

Carrie - Thanks for the recommendations! I think I'll go onto Amazon and place an order.

I'm hoping that by the time the weather changes, I can start a walking/running program. Oops, the kids have caught me on the computer again and they've been asking to go sledding. Gotta go :goodvibes

Cam - I have the same pain regarding trail shoes. I just counted it up today, and I have tried 10 different pairs. I just bought my latest pair at my favorite outdoor store and I spent hours trying shoes on!!!!!! They bruised my left ankle bone and hurt my right heel/ankle. I'm wondering if i can return them, but they look awful after the 31 miles of trail and mud and ice!!!!! I could technically say i've only run in them one time!!!!! We have a fleet feet, but they did a terrible job fitting me w/ a road shoe and i have just not trusted them since. When i went there (in their defense) i was self-conscious b/c of my lack of speed and did not feel comfortable to tell them what i really needed. I'm thinking about getting some at road runner sports as they do say they will take them back and exchange them if they do not work.

Cam - I also take a 9.5 in a running shoe. You need that extra room, woman! Take care with that migraine. Thank goodness I only get about one a year. But the land me in the ER each time.

Jen - what's the name of your half marathon coming up? Someone on my goo goo dolls message boards is doing her first half in WI soon. I PMed her to ask the name of the race, but she hasn't responded yet. Speaking fo that message board, we kind of started a mini WISH type thread over there with a few of us wanting to get healthier & in better shape.

DreamBeliever
- I know most everyone here will recommend John Bingham's books, esp. Marathoning For Mortals. I read that and Courage To Start and they both were great.

MelR
- shoot, try to return them. All they can say is no, right? ;)

Today was my stretch & strengthen day. Does napping all afternoon count? :rolleyes1

Hey all. Well, my strep test was positive. Gotta give it to my mom, she knew what the culprit was. Anyway, I'm medicated now, so I should be feeling much better by tomorrow. Oh, and ya'll will appreciate this, the dr. I went to today was new to me b/c this is the first time I"ve needed a dr. since we moved. But I go back to the exam room, and lo and behold a motivational marathon poster from The Dallas White Rock Marathon was the centerpiece of the room. Turns out he's a marathoner and tri-athlete! Pretty cool! Now off to find something to eat that doesn't hurt my throat--mmmm,maybe ice cream!

Kristi - The 1/2 is the Green Bay 1/2 Marathon in Green Bay, WI (Home of the Packers). If she is anywhere near my pace and looking for a partner, I would be happy to oblige. I will be running alone.

Cam - I normally wear a 9, but they fit me for an 11. I swear it is too big and even looks big, but I have never ever had any toe pain. They also told me that when I was wearing too small of a shoe, my arches were not on the correct arch area of the shoe. Get better soon sweety!!!!

I found some Crocs at a great price for DH on ebay, now I am on the hunt for some for me. I am not sure bright red ones will be appropriate in most situations, but if that's what I get then that's what I get!!!

Oh my sweet poor Cam! I hate that you are having shoe issues....that is enough to give anyone a migraine!:headache: FYI...I wear a 6 shoe and a 7.5-8 running shoe. So get the extra room. Cause you are going to be cruze'n at WDW 08!:car:

nucpharm29 - Milk shakes are always good for strep! Hope you feel better soon!:wizard:

Quick question for the guys! Why do men feel the need to blow their horn when I am (or any woman) running down the road???
I ran to pick up my car at the shop this afternoon (don't be too impressed, it was only 3.5 miles...but I did it in less that 30 min with an ave 8:30 pace!) and at least 10 cars blew their horn at me...I wasn't in their way or anything. I did have on my WISH shirt, so maybe they were just blinded by it.

Dave - I thought of you while I was running and I said a prayer of thanks that you were OK. I was extra careful with all the cars around.

Hi guys! No time to catch up on the 6 pages that has already been posted this week but I wanted to give you an update on my 5K.

Well, we almost didnt do it. We were all tired & not in the mood. Not to mention the crazy cold & windy weather. It is dowtown Mobile by the water so that wind comes right off the bay. Man was it cold. Well, I knew I couldnt come back here & tell you guys that I whimped out of the race for no good reason so we did it. And boy am I glad I did. DS9 was totally unmotivated for this race so I was trying to egg him on by saying I was going to beat him (because if he put forth some effort he would beat me) and I really pushed myself. Mile 1 was exactly 12:00!:cool1: Then when we turned the corner, bam strong headwind that slowed me down big time. I had secreatly wanted to finish in under 40:00 (to steal Cam's goal) but wehn I knew that wasnt going to happen I was aiming for under 42. I finished in 41:41, that's a 13:17 pace :yay: PR baby!!! Especially since I've only done 2 weeks worth of anything since WDW.

I'll catch up with you guys later, just wanted to tell you about my PR & to say thanks for being the inspiration & the support I need to get my butt out on the course even when I dont want to. I am so glad I did!

I love you guys & am so thankful to be a part of this amazing team!

I will run more marathons if I get a spa treatment afterwards!!! I tried a new spa today and had one of the best massages I ever had. It almost made running in the cold worth while.

Jean - You can call me Scuba Steve. I've been called worst things by my running and scuba buddies.

Martha - I did not take a picture, but the pros where there. They already have some online of my son waiving his hand puppets. We will probably buy one and will post it.

Carrie - I ran the Avalon Marathon in Orlando in November. It was a 6.x mile loop. We ran it 4 times. It was boring and nothing more than a training run. I can't even think of running a loop 8 times.
Besides some local runs the next fun run looks like the Muddy Buddy. It sure does sound like a great guy time.

OMG, Mel what a pic! I'm opening the thread and trying to get all snuggled in for a long read and Oh my! :lmao:

Amazing, simply amazing! I am loving this! Today is Monday and we've got more pages to read than I've got time! Isn't it great! Don't stop.

Feel better to those not feeling so up to things. Glad that the strep is medicated and WISH that the migraine wasn't so debilitating. I can't even imagine.

Yay! for new shoes. I love our Fleet Feet store. I feel bad that I had to go back and ask about a problem I was having with one of my new shoes (I buy 2 sets, 1 for half and 1 for full) There was no hesitation, they returned my one pair and fitted me with a larger size. No problem! So far, all is good with the shoes.

Christa, at least they are honking their horn. It could be like Dave where you would have to honk instead. They're just jealous you're out there and they are sitting around getting more slobby.

Thanks to all who posted race reports. Sounds like everyone done good!

Welcome new folks! I can't wait to get to know everyone better.

I am another to highly recommend Marathoning for Mortals! If you are new to this sport the program offered in the book could be a great one. I am a Penguin for sure.

I was so sore yesterday after my stupid workout that I couldn't hardly move. I discovered I am so far out of condition that I am ashamed. I couldn't let anyone here know how bad I felt, so I did laundry up and down stairs WAY more than I could have liked. Sitting, up down...ouch! So today I stopped at MY gym and met with someone who does the training there. I am seriously considering it, only problem is $$$ I need to find a golden apple tree somewhere, or something. Anyway, I have a goal now. Cross training is NOT an option. I will make sure I get a cross section going for training.

Tonight I managed 30 minutes on the elliptical at level 1 and 2 and put in 3.75 miles on that contraption. Then it was upper body weight machines.

Christa - this summer I had a guy in a truck drive by and offer me a beer (which he was holding up while driving!!!???) We are in the south, baby!!! No point in asking why. Also on the summer beer run day, I was so hot that i had stopped to walk and I called EC to tell her she might have to come pick me up. I was walking in the grass next to the road (not even on the pavement) while i was talking and some guy drove by and told me to get off the phone!! I'm not sure when walking and talking on the phone became a road hazard!!

Hey Maherae and Big Vic:

Where are you guys staying for the Snickers/Seaside Half Marathons? Just made a ressie for New Orleans but not seein anything in particular that excites me about Albany or Seaside... Through the AF we get a good deal at the Sandestin Hilton for $87ish after tax, but that's like 15 miles up the road from Seaside, was hoping for something a bit closer to avoid driving back and forth (gonna have to drive back home to Navarre that way too). As for Albany, looks like the host hotel is all booked up, anything else look swell?

Hello Everyone

Just quick post! No training for me today, yesterday took it all out of me.
But I did come home at 8:30 pm from a long day at school - been there since 10 am, to DH and sons surprising me with cake and new running clothes from Under Armour  they are so sweet. (Oh it was my Bday - yes day after anniversary don't know what I was thinking - AND DID I MENTION DS TURNS 11 ON TUESDAY, we are a little busy in Feb) Now I can't wait to run again!! New clothes always motivates. I did tell DH about lime green undergarments but those were not included in gift ( I don't know why :rotfl: )

DreamBeliever - We do not follow any specific plan did a lot of reading and got some ideas for training plans from runnersworld.com. I hear a lot about the Marathoning for Mortals and it sounds good. I would go for anything the wonderful people on these boards post cause they are all so succesful!

Jim - Was your son wearing red shirt at race? There was a boy behind me in one of pics with something on his hands. looks like socks!! he he

Melissa - I'm sorry for complaining about cold!! I'll bet the scenery was beautiful and I can not even IMAGINE finishing a race like that!!! I am in AWE!!

I have a job interview tomorrow morning!!! Very nervous after being a stay at home mom for 5 years and now student for 5 years I have NO IDEA what to say or do!! And I want to make sure I make the right choice of jobs that will be best for my family.

Anyway, happy training, I won't run again until Wednesday!!!

Angie

Lily - tell me if you find that golden apple tree - I need one too!

Jen - I'll check with Debbie from my other boards and see if that's her race.

Tiffany - awesome job getting out there & a PR to boot!

Angie - good luck on that interview! :wizard:

Christa - no one ever beeps at me! I am feeling left out now. ;)

Friday night we decided to do the 5K an went to the local running store to sign up. Again, the owner rembered us. Pretty impressive. We buy our shoes there and our Amphipod stuff, but little else as I always buy my clothes on sale.

There were 150 entrants last year and they were hopuing to beat that. All I could think about wa that the only people crazy enough to run in an "Ice Fest" must be good. So, I was terribly afraid of being last. Don't know hwat it should matter, but I was. On the birght side, the shirts were cool.

IMG_3091.jpg

I had heard about the course, but wasn't exactly sure what roads. I was very grateful to find someone with a map. She laughed and said I'd better know the course in case I was in the lead. I said, "No, I'm afraid of being so far behind that I have no one to follow."

Luckily, the store is in an mini mall that used to be a factory. So, there was a hallway to stretch. I was shoacked to see a man with just shorts adn bare legs. :scared1: MInd you, temps in the 20s are warmer than it has been, but there's still a bit of a breeze off Lake MI. Scott noted that he was going to pull something and how stupid this was, but we'll here more about him later.

Eventually, we had to make the migration to the start.

IMG_3075.jpg

Not quite like WDW, but there is something cool about small races.

The pink box is the start point.
IMG_3076.jpg

Oops! We all lined up on the wrong side of teh median and had to move. lol.

View from the start

Then, the store owner counted down..."3....2...1...GO". Yeah, that was different.

Here are some shots from the lakeshore portion:

We were cruising around a 9:50. I was a bit tired, but wanted to see how far I coudl take it, with it "only" being 5K. OK, so I've been on teh TM with no hills or slush. These conditions were a little harder. Then, we hit "5 Mile Hill". Now, I know it's not 5 miles,, as we were only runnigna 5K and this was only a small portion of the course. It had to be at least a half mile though. Plus, it was pretty slushy and hard to get ground.

Then, you see a turn and think that's the top. Nope, about half way. You start a small downhill, but see that it does not last for long.

IMG_3089.jpg

Then, I was tired and the pix stopped. :p Just basically through town. Nothing too exciting. Pace never caught up after the uphill. EWe finished qwith a 10:30, wich is what I was really hoping to do for Minnie, but I am starting to doubt. We finished with a 11:10 pace. *This was taken a while after we finished.

IMG_3090.jpg

It was cool to have our names said over the loudspeaker. ANother benefit to a small race. ;) It was fun adn at least got us on teh road. We were disappointed, though, that we were the only 2 whol came back to cheer for the people at the end. It ws nto THAT cold. Howver, I was so grateful that there were people behind us! We were 95 and 96 out of 110, but we weren't last. Howver, I give so much credit to teh group that was.

Now, back to bare leg guy. WHen we went inside to turn in our chips, he was teling a friend about his recurring injury. "I rest, it gets better, I start again and it comes back." Hmmm...you run in the cold with nothing on your legs. WOnder why you're hurting? Then he adds, "But I'm 48 adn I'm gonna' set a PR at RIver Bank (local spring 25K), so I'm doing ptretty good." Yeah, if you make it there in one piece. At 48, you think he'd have alittle more common sense.

So, will that go on your race to do list, Mel? ;)

Ok, time to get ready for work.

Good Morning TEAM: :surfweb:

Happy "Free Pancake Day" at IHoP today!

First of all, thank you everyone for your well wishes about my close call with the car on Saturday. You are all very kind. No, I wasn't hurt at all, but it was such a close call I did get kind of shook up. I noticed it even when I was driving around the rest of the weekend. I was hypervigilant and on edge. I think I am going to check out some local parks to do my next LR because I really have no desire to get back on the city streets after that. I heard there's a nice park, Mendon Ponds, and I'm going to drive by there to check it out.

Yesterday I did 5 miles on the TM in 46:39 min or 9:20 mpm pace. I set a goal in my mind of running the Flying Pig 1/2M in just under 2 hours. I don't know if I can get down to 9 min miles for 13 miles, but it's good to have a goal, right?

This is Winter Break week for the local schools here. So I'm having "Daddy Camp" with the princesses, DD9 princess: and DD6 princess:. That just means that they hang out in the morning while I work at home, and then we do activities in the afternoon. Yesterday we went to the children's museum. Today, I'm going to take the princesses to the University pool to swim while I swog, and then we'll go to IHoP for free pancakes.

OK, I really need to catch up with everyone. There's so many race reports, yahoo!

OK, here's my catchup post... let me just say that our new team mates are FAST!!! WTG everyone :cool1:!

:welcome: to the team Liz and dreambeliever!!!

Mel- Uuum, nice WISH team gear find with the thong. I think the conversation has taken a weird turn from sport bras.

Stephanie- Nice job on the sub 9 mpm pace, and the age group award for the River Trail 15K. You'll have to let us know if they send the award to you - maybe you'll have to go to the running store to pick it up.

Matt- Congratulations on the sub 2 hour 1/2M in Pensacola. That's awesome! Do you have any pictures of your medal? I can't wait to hear how your next 3 1/2Ms go. I can't believe you're doing 4 1/2M in 3 weeks. You go! Don't hurt yourself.

:bday: Angie- You ROCK! :rockband: That is amazing that you beat your 1/2M goal by 10 minutes!!! That is so awesome. Congratulations on your 2 hour 1/2M to both you and your husband. WTG!!!

Melissa- I loved your 50K race report. Thanks for the detailed post! Congratulations! That sounds so great that you and Phil crossed the finish line hand in hand. You're a model couple!!! I hope your knee is feeling OK. Give it some rest.

Jim- Great idea volunteering at the Expo. I've never done that (I've volunteered at some H2O stops though), and it sounds like fun. Hmmmmm, if I do a solo trip to Disney next year for the marathon, maybe I can volunteer at the Expo. Wow, you beat your last marathon time by 27 min!!!! That is awesome! Congratulations on the sub 5 hour marathon. That is amazing.

TiffJ- Whoo hooo a PR!!! Congratulations on your 5K in Mobile! Sounds like you are doing well since Disney!

Duane- Congratulations on finishing your first race! Wow, what an achievement! That is awesome. 24:29 min!!! That is a fantastic time - WTG!

Carrie- Congratulations to you and Scott on the Ice Festival 5K. Good job for getting out there in some pretty cold and icy conditions. Thanks for posting the pictures! That is a really nice T-shirt design. Wear it with pride.

Well, I hope I didn't miss anyone's races. Once again the WISH Racing team was well represented this weekend. I'm so proud to be a member of this team!

Good Morning Team.

Weather has finally gotten a little nicer here and will actually get outside for a walk tonight after work.

Went out at lunch yesterday for a 2K but it was snowing it cold, tonight should be much nicer.

I could only skim through the thread this morning and seen alot about shoe sizes. My running shoes fit perfectly but there isn't alot of room at the toes?? Should I be worried, I will need new ones before the 1/2 but will be using these ones for my 10 and 15K coming up.

Kim

Jim - Was your son wearing red shirt at race? There was a boy behind me in one of pics with something on his hands. looks like socks!! he he

Angie

Lucky you about all the gifts. Can't wait to hear what you get after running your first full. :rotfl:

Matt had on a black shirt, white socks on his hands, and orange sleeves on his head. Today he wore his Gasparilla shirt to school. At least he did not wear his socks and sleves.

Good luck on the job interview. In my mind going to work is easier then staying at home.
