Friday night we decided to do the 5K an went to the local running store to sign up. Again, the owner rembered us. Pretty impressive. We buy our shoes there and our Amphipod stuff, but little else as I always buy my clothes on sale.
There were 150 entrants last year and they were hopuing to beat that. All I could think about wa that the only people crazy enough to run in an "Ice Fest" must be good. So, I was terribly afraid of being last. Don't know hwat it should matter, but I was. On the birght side, the shirts were cool.
I had heard about the course, but wasn't exactly sure what roads. I was very grateful to find someone with a map. She laughed and said I'd better know the course in case I was in the lead. I said, "No, I'm afraid of being so far behind that I have no one to follow."
Luckily, the store is in an mini mall that used to be a factory. So, there was a hallway to stretch. I was shoacked to see a man with just shorts adn bare legs.

MInd you, temps in the 20s are warmer than it has been, but there's still a bit of a breeze off Lake MI. Scott noted that he was going to pull something and how stupid this was, but we'll here more about him later.
Eventually, we had to make the migration to the start.
Not quite like WDW, but there is something cool about small races.
The pink box is the start point.
Oops! We all lined up on the wrong side of teh median and had to move. lol.
View from the start
Then, the store owner counted down..."3....2...1...GO". Yeah, that was different.
Here are some shots from the lakeshore portion:
We were cruising around a 9:50. I was a bit tired, but wanted to see how far I coudl take it, with it "only" being 5K. OK, so I've been on teh TM with no hills or slush. These conditions were a little harder. Then, we hit "5 Mile Hill". Now, I know it's not 5 miles,, as we were only runnigna 5K and this was only a small portion of the course. It had to be at least a half mile though. Plus, it was pretty slushy and hard to get ground.
Then, you see a turn and think that's the top. Nope, about half way. You start a small downhill, but see that it does not last for long.
Then, I was tired and the pix stopped.

Just basically through town. Nothing too exciting. Pace never caught up after the uphill. EWe finished qwith a 10:30, wich is what I was really hoping to do for Minnie, but I am starting to doubt. We finished with a 11:10 pace. *This was taken a while after we finished.
It was cool to have our names said over the loudspeaker. ANother benefit to a small race.

It was fun adn at least got us on teh road. We were disappointed, though, that we were the only 2 whol came back to cheer for the people at the end. It ws nto THAT cold. Howver, I was so grateful that there were people behind us! We were 95 and 96 out of 110, but we weren't last. Howver, I give so much credit to teh group that was.
Now, back to bare leg guy. WHen we went inside to turn in our chips, he was teling a friend about his recurring injury. "I rest, it gets better, I start again and it comes back." Hmmm...you run in the cold with nothing on your legs. WOnder why you're hurting? Then he adds, "But I'm 48 adn I'm gonna' set a PR at RIver Bank (local spring 25K), so I'm doing ptretty good." Yeah, if you make it there in one piece. At 48, you think he'd have alittle more common sense.
So, will that go on your race to do list,
Mel?
Ok, time to get ready for work.
