Wk Of Dec 8 - WISH Walking/Running Club

Good evening fellow WISHers! :surfweb:
I'm sitting here watching a fascinating Monday night football game and thought of my WISH friends. On Saturday I ran 4 miles on the TM. I was over 3 miles into it (remember, I'm hurt and rehabbing so 4 miles is big for me) when the TM just stopped. That's right, it just stopped. Well, :headache: !!! I jump on another TM but b/c I didn't know exactly where I was when it stopped, I did one full mile more which I know ended up being slightly more than 4 miles.

Then Sunday I decided to run 60 minutes. I decided to try my luck with running outside even thought there is ice and snow on the ground. We'd had a warm spell on Saturday and had a lot of melting. I have to say that for the first time in 10 days, my calf felt like I hadn't even hurt it! :cool1: I was happy. I got in a lot of distance and was feeling good.

This morning I got up early and hit the gym early. They are restricting folks to 30 minutes per cardio machine during peak hours (and 7:00 am is peak) so that's all I was allowed. But my calf felt great. I'll run easy the rest of hte week and go for 2 hours over the weekend. If that works, I'll run 4 hours the weekend before Christmas and that will be that last LR of the training schedule.

Calcio: um, ever hear of a rest day? You should try it sometime. Oh, and an ice bath! Does a world of good.

Stacie: talk to WWDave (aka Panda) as he is quite a race walker and can tell you if you are doing it right.

WWDave: talk to Stacie; :woohoo: for getting that packet! Now, don't forget it this year!!!!

Judy: must be something about men. When I'm on the TM, I set it and forget it. My DH always plays with the speed and incline. It's a guy thing.

Bree: sorry to hear the little one is sick. It's so sad when they are sick!!

Everyone have a great evening!!!

Hello Gang

Mondays are always a weights and 30 easy minutes bike workout. The theory is after hard or long Sunday runs the weights make the legs work hard, and then the bike flushes all the garbage out of my muscles.

Well today I learned that theory doesn't always work, especially after an 18 miler the previous day. I always start with hamstring curls, and today the tendons in the back of the knees were sore and swollen, and the hamstrings had huge knots in them. After other exercises I hit the squats, which was really entertaining. The upper outsides of the quads burned after just a few reps, and didn't get any better as the number increased.

At least the upper body work didn't hurt  , and the bike was okay. All of our relatives think Martha and I are insane, and today I wonder if they don't have a point.
Craig

Craig--that's so funny. I am almost exactly in your shoes, too. I finished 18 yesterday and thought I'd follow it up with a nice, long swim and lift session tonight. Well, the swim was fine, but I had the same problem lifting. My legs just would NOT work. I only did about half of my sets.

Glad to hear I'm not the only one feeling it today. And yes, yes you are insane. If nothing else, just for the simple fact that you live in New England, and that's where this one particularly annoying NFL team resides....;)

We're almost there, guys! The hard works going to pay off soon! :thumbsup2

Steve

Hey all--no training for me today (my body was rebelling a little bit today) And unlike some of us (ahem, Steve and Craig), I decided to rest the legs a bit!;) And then no time for a workout tomorrow--will try to get a few miles in on Wed!

Steve

Too funny, you swim like I bike, to flush out the legs, and we both failed miserably.

Remember I grew up in Colorado, and even now after 27 years away, it's still my "home." Martha likes seasons, but I'd be perfectly happy with 65 degrees and dry every day of the year. The Denver area doesn't get 12 inches of rain a year, and even now I hate running in the rain.

And remember, remember, my favorite sport BY FAR is soccer. I'm the fool who flew to Amsterdam on his 50th birthday with his bride to watch his beloved Ajax play.

True story, in May 2005 I'm in London working. It's Sunday 9 am in Boston, and Lesley is watching Fox Soccer Channel. Fulham is playing Norwich in London. Martha walks by and says "I bet your father is there." Lesley's reaction is "what, no way, not possible." Yes indeed, at that very moment I am sitting in the bleachers at Craven Cottage watching the match. Pitiful. I'm 3000 miles from home and my wife knows within 50 meters where to find me  . This March all 3 of us are heading to London for a long weekend to see another match, plus we have tickets to the British Museum's exhibit of Terra Cotta warriors from the tomb of the Chinese Emporer Qin, dating from 210 BC.

I hope you won't hate me for this, but I am strongly pulling for the Patriots to win them all. I have had more than enough of the 1972 Dolphins. Bitter old men they have become. I don't see how the success of others reduces your own achievement. They either have latent insecurity issues, or Freud would say they just hate their mothers.

Yes, we are close. I'll see you two in 4 weeks.

Craig

Hey everyone- it was a rest day for me. I did walk a little with DD(8) on her scooter. She was explaining the options she has for Santa this year: a Disney video camera, a laptop, a cellphone, or one of the new Nanos. WHAT!? Obviously I have to keep her from talking to Santa this year since I'm not real big on any of her options! Maybe Santa should bring a few smaller things and cash to spend Marathon Weekend...

So, it's been ridiculously hot here. It's supposed to be 80 tomorrow. I have total respect for those of you dealing with snow and ice, but why can't we meet in the middle?! Oddly enough my half on Sunday is predicted to be 41 in the morning- can you say clothing crisis?

I don't really know anything else- just procrastinating because everyone is asleep and I can play in peace. I have 5 scheduled for tomorrow.

Wait! I do know something else! Welcome back, Angie!!!!! Sorry your surgery was so horrible- I'm impressed you're even trying after 4 weeks! Get healthy! And way to go, Bobby! (Wasn't he pretty miserable after his surgery too?)

Jen in GA

Oh, last rambling thought- after DH walked a 5k with DD Sunday, he was talking trash about how he could probably run a 5k. I told him there is a local race in the spring he could start training for and he was all like "I don't really need to train, I already walk 2 or 3 miles a day..." :scared1: Guess who just found their motivation to keep training after Goofy.:rolleyes1 He's going down!:rotfl2:

Hey everyone!
Craig - :lmao: I understand working out after a LR!

Angie - Great to see...well read your post...again. I have been wondering what was going on with you.:grouphug: to you and :cheer2: for your DH and DS!

Well I am happy to report that I can now walk down the stairs again and bend over...still a little sore though. My soreness is lasting a bit longer this time around but I did not get to rest after the marathon so I guess it is to be expected. I am just glad I can bend over without screaming in pain.

During the marathon I declaired that I would never run one of these things again. Well I didn't say it that nice, but you get the picture. But like childbirth:scared1: ...I am starting to forget the pain. However, the marathon lasted longer than the time it took to give birth to both of my children. Sorry guys.

Funny story!
DD7 asked me today if I was still sore from the marathon. I said yes. She said she understood b/c she was still sore from my marathon too.:confused3 I guess she has felt my pain b/c she loves me.:flower3:

I understand!

It has been hot here too! Good luck on your 1/2 Saturday! 41 will be better than the temps now....of course, I am a cold wimp so it is easy to sit here and type that 41 is better than the current temps.:rolleyes1

However, the marathon lasted longer than the time it took to give birth to both of my children. Sorry guys.

If that is the case, maybe I won't set marathons as a goal. My wife was in labor for 20+ hours for each of our first 2 (thats how I knew they would be girls because they were smart enough even in the womb to figure out there was no sense squeezing their heads through a little hole and that someone would eventually go in and get them). The other two were scheduled.

So, if that rule applies to fathers as well, I am looking at a 40+ hour marathon, which is probably my current pace, so it would have to be an extremely walker/crawler friendly one.

Awww, come on Bill. Have faith, the speed will come. Just keep working at it. I know it is discouraging at first, but keep plugging away!!! BTW, how is the back doing anyhow???

I am on for 40 minutes of XT today so, yes, I am skiing. It was really cold yesterday and we took the kids on the snowmobiles to get dessert at a local store and I thought I was going to freeze (I was a passenger BTW, DD13 is now the official driver of Ms. Daisy!!).

To anyone in OK, I hope you are all okay (:lmao: ). My DS called this a.m. and said they are on day 2 of no power so I am sending :wizard: and :grouphug: to anyone stuck in that. We had it years back and were out of power for 1 week and some were out for 3. I am keeping all of you in my thoughts!!!

Sigh....so last week was a total bust running wise for me thanks to my work schedule. I ran my 10K on Sunday which went fine. Yesterday morning I woke up with some pain in my right shin (towards the outside), and some tightness and pain in my calf and hip flexor. I'm going to see if I can get into the chiro in case it is an adjustment thing in my hip that is travelling down my leg. My 10-20 combo is this weekend... I'm going to rest it until I see the chiro or it feels better, but hopefully I am all sorted out to do my LR this weekend.

Has anyone had this issue before? Any ideas before I see my chiro/active release guy?

Lisa--Faith I have, its the execution that I need to work on. I have given the back somewhat of a break and am working on core and strength with some recumbant bike. As long as I don't stand or sit too long, the back seems to do okay for the most part (after my morning straightening routine). I am thinking I'll give it a couple more weeks, then try to start back on the walking. The Boston Race To Remember (in honor of fallen Police and Firefighters) half marathon is the end of May. I am thinking about maybe trying for that, but there is a 3 hour time limit. :confused3 They do have a 5 mile event also though.

Steve, Krista and everyone else jumping on the anti-Pats bandwagon--Sorry you had to endure another Patriots win. And Steve, as a long time Patriots fan, I don't find WINNING to be boring at all. Although I am sure its not nearly as exciting as watching the Steelers beat the 0-13 Dolphins by a score of 3-0 while swaths of sod come flying and sliding because some engineering/landscaping expert thought it was a good idea to just lay new sod on top of the old worn out stuff. :confused3

That is so cute!!!

Just a quick drive by since there is STILL no training to report (total LTO - with Christmas and me trying to get cards out and crafts started and finished training has suffered) I wanted to get on the TM today for at least 2-3 miles but that isn't going to happen. I am helping a friend this evening with a party so I will be getting home too late but I am making $40 so its not all bad. I am planning on doing a 5k in the beginning of Jan. I just don't want my time to :scared1: me since there hasn't been any training lately. I am definately ready to get back on the bandwagon though so at least that is good (unlike last year when I stopped for a whole year.) I am commited this time!!

Angie - Welcome back - hope you feel better soon. Yeah and good luck for your DH and son.

All Jan Marathon/Half/Goofy runners - I am impressed with your milage - guess that is what I am looking forward to this time next year!! That means I better not procrastinate getting things done for Christmas next year. Keep up the good work everyone!! Go WISH team!! :cheer2:

Greetings Racing Team -

No training to report because....well....I'm not going to say. Let's just say I traded tomorrow's rest day for today and leave it at that. :rolleyes1

Angie - I'm glad to see you back here and sending you loads of :wizard: for your recovery.

Jen in GA - "I don't really need to train". Thems fightin' words!

he was all like "I don't really need to train, I already walk 2 or 3 miles a day..." :scared1: Guess who just found their motivation to keep training after Goofy.:rolleyes1 He's going down!:rotfl2:
Jen - Men are idiots!

Oh wait, I seem to recall that I'm a toilet seat up kind of person.....

Men are invincible! We can do anything we set our mind to!

In case anyone thinks I just sit here and throw smart-a** comments out, I actually do run too. Sometimes... Every once in a while.

Steve, Krista and everyone else jumping on the anti-Pats bandwagon--Sorry you had to endure another Patriots win.

Just so you know, I'm not a band wagon Patriots hater, I've been hating them a loooooooooooooooong time, so this season has NOTHING to do with it.

I would say a lot more about Belichick and Co., but I better stop while I'm ahead, so I'll just say GO JETS!!!! and we'll see what happens this time when there isn't a camera pointed at the defensive coordinator.

Hey everyone. I haven't posted in a while but I'm so excited to say I finished my first twelve miler! I was running to finish, not for time (but timed it anyway) and averaged an @ 13:00 minute pace. I'm in the last corral and was wondering if that was fast enough to beat the sweepers, including potty break, being in last corral, and getting through crowds?

Thanks in advance!

Got in my ski today for XT. I made it 2.36 miles in 34:52. While I was out skiing my first mile I realized I was not even skiing fast enough to beat the sweeps so I ramped it up the last mile 36 and averaged out at about a 15.5 mile so I beat the sweeps. Snow tonight and more this weekend. :woohoo:

Hello WISHers!

I have been gone from the boards, mostly because my motivation seems to be gone as well! I'm still getting some running in, but not as much as I should. I did 13 on Monday and 4 today. I'll be out of town this weekend and not able to do a LR, so I need to get r done on Thursday. I'm planning on 16 and hoping it's not too hot as I'll have to do it in the afternoon after work.

Does anybody have any pixie dust that will get me up off my lazy behind and out on the road?!?

I don't have time to catch up, but have to say WELCOME BACK ANGIE! Sorry you've got a slow recovery going on but you will get there!

Happy training, all!
Renee

GOOD EVENING

Thank you to everyone for the welcome backs!! I am so bummed was supposed to go back to gym tonight, finally!! -- forgot about DS's Science Fair :confused3 What can you do we will try again tomorrow night.

I am so proud of all you guys and the awesome mileage you are putting in. It is so rediculously HOT down here :scared1: so I have major respect for all of you running in the cold, rain, sleet, ice etc.

Keep up the good work team

Renee - this is for you!! :wizard: :wizard: :wizard: :grouphug: I totally understand lack of motivation. I really hope you get some back

gotta go to science fair, catch up more tomorrow

angie
