Wk Of Dec 8 - WISH Walking/Running Club

Karen - Tons of PD for your son. How terrible, but it is good that it wasn't worse.

My shoes are older -- I have been worried about switching so close to the WDW marathon -- this is my first marathon and I am a little nervous about everything.

Dona - If you still have one or two long runs to do you can still switch to new shoes. If your older shoes are breaking down they will be painful at the marathon. If you can get the same model I say go for it. My shoes that I'm wearing for the half have just under 100 miles on them, my shoes for the full will have about 70 miles on them.

Original Bill--I knew I liked you for some reason (besides the way you like to toy with the law). Mecury "where's the crack" Morris was on the radio up here last week talking about the 1972 Dolphins and how they didn't run up the score on teams. He explained by pointing out that he was taken out of the game they beat the Patriots 55-0 that year when the Dolphins were up only 45-0. Huh?

AmyBeth--Just think, if the Pats can get by the NY R-A-T-S ... Rats ... Rats ... Rats and the Dolphins, the NY Giants will be standing between them and a 16-0 regular season. The Meadowlands is off Exit 16W, right. Prophetic?

Krista--I know you are not jumping on any bandwagon. I GUARANTY you that I wouldn't like the Steelers if they regularly beat my favorite team, especially in AFC Championship games.

Karen - a  for you, and lots of :wizard: for Sean. Is he racing with us again this year?

I got to the Y and did 3 miles on the track. It was supposed to be 4.5 miles, but I guess I can count all that getting on & off the bandwagon, right? I was tired, it was feeling hard, and I certainly do not want to risk any injury or pain this close to the Half. I do have 8 miles scheduled for Saturday and I will do them - even if it means swapping Saturday & Sunday's training schedule. I will drop running intervals if necessary.

I just finished Dean Karnazes' book last night. He is amazing! Is there a reason he has not died doing the races he does? It really was a good book if anyone is looking for something to read. I don't know that it inspired me per se as I am not going to run for 200+ miles straight through for over 48 hours. Still a great book!

Karen, PD for Sean that he will be fine and healing goes well.

I've managed my gym w/o the last 2 days successfully.

I'm having shoe issues, I don't really care for the new ones I'm using, I am not able to trade in due to time issues so I'm hoping that it's just that I don't like the shoes and the way they fit and that is all. I've no time to deal with anything that may crop up. I've had almost blisters, hot spots, at the arch on the LRs but missed my LR last week to see if it will be a major issue or not. I'm even trying changing the socks to see if this will help any.

Terri, PD for your Mom's recovery.

Stacie, at least you are finding out these things so they can be corrected! PD for you as you are getting through it.

Eek, one month!

Hi Everyone -

Reading the posts, you would think that running is not very good for the body. It's almost like we are a bunch of addicts....oh wait, never mind.

Christmas is tough enough without having to train for a marathon. Why does every single group or organization feel like they have to have a party? Give me a break! I can not pass up suger cookies when I ran 12 miles that morning!

Jen - I think I would gift receipt girl with a gift card. The Cruella in me is saying "for the grocery store" The mom in me is fighting her off knowing that dd's reputation would never recover.

Karen - hope Sean has no further injuries and recovers quickly!

Dona - New shoes, as long as you are planning at least one more long run. You won't have time to let them sit like royalty on the dresser either. Straight out of the box and onto the road.

Stacie - hang in there! None of us have perfect bodies (ignore Christa's pictures) and yet we all manage to make them function. I know its frightening to hear all the things that are wrong, but you will overcome it!

Terri - Three days in a row this time of year is absolutely awesom! way to go.

Cindy - Past the first mile, you may have to do some weaving but you should be able to keep your pace. The only other squirrelly spot was when the starts merged at mile 3. You might have to slow down there. I thought the merge spot was too dark so hopefully they will have better lighting there this year.

Have a great day everyone!

Hey team.

It's been forever since I posted, or even got online to read. The holidays seem to have taken over -- that and carting kids everywhere imaginable. I have kept on running though -- mostly on the treadmill.

Here's what I need advice about -- my long runs have gotten longer -- about 16 miles today:banana: and my legs and lungs seem to be holding up fine :goodvibes my problem is the bottoms of my feet and the tops of my toes  I'm okay until about mile 8 or so and then the bottoms of my feet and tops of my toes start to hurt. Today I felt like I could have easily gone farther -- except I was bored out of my mind on the treadmill, if my feet hadn't been bothering me.

My shoes are older -- I have been worried about switching so close to the WDW marathon -- this is my first marathon and I am a little nervous about everything.

Any ideas?

Dona

3 words for you
GET NEW SHOES
You actually have plenty of time to break them in b/4 the marathon...I switch mine out every 300 miles. You are risking getting hurt if you continue to run on old ones...I learned this the hard way with a nice stress fracture after my 1st 1/2 marathon.

I agree w/Christa....go to a reputable running store and have them fit you then try out different styles to see which ones feel the best. I bought a pair of Brooks for the first time and haven't had any problems with blisters, soreness, etc...My only problem is this annoying PF, but stretching before and after my walks, seem to be helping. Good luck!

Is anyone else nervous about the marathon? Man, I hope I finish in the required time.

Ya, I have no clue how all you guys are getting your training done for January with the holidays. Right off the bat my first four weeks of my training program for March is in total disarray. :confused3

I'm wondering how I'll be able to do it next January. Right now I'm up five pounds. :scared1:

So I gotta say you guys are an amazing bunch. Very dedicated and inspiring! :thumbsup2

I really need to get off the computer and wrap some gifts. :santa:

Hello everyone! Seems like a quiet week on the boards. I finally got out and ran on my own accord last night. I ran 3.18 miles through my neighborhood in 37:09 (11:41/mi). It was pretty slow.... But after the pain I was having in my right leg I didn't want to push it. The leg held up with no pain though, and it feels good today, so yay for ART!

Tomorrow is 10 miles, Saturday is 20....

Jackie - how did your ART go today?

For those who did not see her thread, Lynne (xterratri) matched to Hawaii for her pediatrics residency. We are happy the wait is over and are already planning a trip in 2009 to visit.

Haven't had a chance to read the posts in the last day but I did want to report that I FINALLY got somewhat back on the bandwagon. I ran on the TM last night for 2 miles. I haven't run in over 2 weeks so I knew it wouldn't be pretty. I had to walk for 1/10 of a mile every 1/2 mile. Then when I got past 1.5 miles I started running again and I just felt like I couldn't keep up so I continued to walk at 4 mph and then the last 1/10 of a mile I ran at 6 MPH as if it was the finish line (I like to give it ALL I have within the last .1 before the finish line.) As far as training today - most likely not to happen but I want to get on the TM again tomorrow AM before work. I really want to be ready for a 5k in the end of January even though I am going to sign up for one the beginning of January since its in my town again. Hopefully things will calm down after Christmas and then I can move into a nice routine of training.

1 question as far as shoes - I know that I need new shoes so I definately know I need to get them this weekend. But I was wondering if it was recommend that I take my old pair of shoes with me to the running store when I go. I got fitted by them for these shoes but I want to make sure that they are the "right" shoes for me.

Well I tried to keep up on the posts. Here is my weak attempt:

Dona: I agree with everyone else with GET NEW SHOES. I rotate mine out every 250 to 300 miles and sometimes sooner depending on how fast I feel the pain in my knees coming back. You have a lot of time before January to get the shoes broken in.

Tricia: I usually wear my last pair when I pick out my new ones. That way I can take off the ones that fit correctly before and still have the "feeling" when I try on the new ones. I don't know that it would help everyone exactly but, so far, I am knocking wood that it has worked so far for me.

Shan: I get all my Christmas shopping done in October/November and have everything wrapped, Christmas cards addressed and ready to go by Thanksgiving day. It is the only way I remain sane during the holidays. Also, my DD has a birthday on the 22nd just to add to the holiday stress...a teenage birthday party!!!:scared1:

As for me today, I ran in intervals of 6.2 mph and 4.5 mph for 40 minutes. My average was 11:32 and I ran for 3.49 miles. Since I could not get the @*#!! TM to do custom intervals today, they were 2:40 intervals across the board. Not bad, but certainly not 13.1 miles in any decent time!!! I guess I will be glad to finish a half, just finish, even DLF!! :confused3

Just posting to say HI! cuz I don't have much training to report. Did get 3.something miles in yesterday after work--but the end of Christmas shopping and Mailing packages got in the way today! Maybe tomorrow--but I'm not holding my breath--I am making a peppermint cheesecake tomorrow, though!

Hi everyone!

I wanted everyone to know that I have (now) officially begun my training for Goofy '08! :woohoo: :cool1:  :cheer2: :yay: :rolleyes1

I ran at the gym last night (6.35 miles) and it went pretty well. I won't have an opportunity to run tonight due to class but I will be hitting the TM tomorrow to log some additional miles.

I am actually starting earlier than I did last year. Last year I began on December 15 and was able to log a LR of 13.8 before completing Goofy '07. I will do everything in my power to get ready. :thumbsup2

I am very much looking forward to seeing everyone again in less than one month in WDW.

Happy training! Happy taper (when you get to it). I am not sure that tapering is in my plans. I guess we'll see how the training goes.

I will keep everyone informed. WISH me luck!

Howard

Leana - Had a really good session with the chiro, but OUCH! He worked the entire foot and calf really hard. It already feels a little better, and he wants to see me twice next week and maybe once the week after. I'd planned to do 12 miles this weekend, but he told me not to do more than 4 and wait till next weekend for the 12.

Howard - Welcome back! You make me feel not so bad about not having run for a couple of weeks. I'd forgotten that you manage to do the Goofy after training for just one month!

Stacie - The chiro I went to is in Cary - wondered if I might run into you!

Kristi, Craig, Martha, Amy, Lisa - Are you guys shoveling out from snow?

So now... if I run 4 miles Saturday, then do 3 miles a couple of times during the week, plan on 12 next weekend, I guess I'll still be mostly on track? I'm just so frustrated - up until the end of August I was doing great, and from then on it's just been all downhill. I just can't get back into it either physically or mentally, so I really hope this ART makes a difference fast!

Oh - on my way to the chiro this morning saw the most bone-headed runner I've ever seen, and thought I really hope we're all smarter than this... It's still dark outside, guy's wearing dark clothes with nothing reflective, decides to cross the street AFTER the light turns green, then crosses diagonally through the intersection so he risks being hit by ALL the traffic. I almost stopped the car to tell him just how stupid he was!

Jackie

Way to go Lynne!!!!!

Howard I did not know you had a month of training for Goofy '07. Amazing! Happy safe training for you!!!!

This weekend isn't looking to promising. I'm hoping between Saturday & Sunday to get in something over 10. I've managed to get in to the gym 3 times this week and plan on going to run on the TM tomorrow. And the scale was taunting me today, I had sworn I wouldn't get on it till the beginng of Jan. I was afraid I'd see no change or a slide backwards thanks to missed gym/park time due to being ill. But nope, I managed to see a bit of a decrease since my Nov weigh in.

I hope with losing some pounds, strength training and pushing my running (mind you I just ran my 1st ever mile last week LOL) that it all pays off and I see that finish line ok honestly the finishing part is important but if I can make it to the WISH Scream Team at the Beach club I know I will finish because I'll just glide on thru from the love  I think I'm dreaming more of seeing the Scream Team than the finish line LOL Like I said, becauseI know that once I see them my heart will be lighter and I will know that nothing will stand in my way.

Can't wait to see you all in a few days!!!! Happy safe training!!! Stay healthy all!!!!

Howard...Good luck with training. You've got the experience and the tenacity...showing up healthy is important so don't push yourself too much too soon. Have some great runs...and take care of yourself!!! :goodvibes

Diane...Congrats on the weight loss!!! You are going to do great in January. Don't stress :). And yes....the BC scream team will be a sight for sore eyes...and legs....and back...oh heck...they'll be a sight for "sore" but they sure will help you along to that finish line. Good luck with training!!

Jackie...YES....shoveling out today for sure. Going to make for a nice and slippery run out there tomorrow...our roads have yet to be plowed! I need those darn Yak Traks! Your plan sounds manageable and will definitely put you on track. I hope the active release works for you and alleviates some of that awful pain!!!! :goodvibes

Lisa...great job getting that run in!!!!! WTG :)

Shan...My priorities are out of whack ;). Well, I'm getting the training in but my shopping isn't done, I haven't wrapped a darn thing, still have to plan events for the girl scouts' christmas party, i'm in charge of a game for the 5th grade party, next week I'm supposed to attend 3 parties and need several dozen cookies baked. :scared: I'm not stressing for some reason...but I know at some point it's all going to hit. Sometimes I question the sanity of training for an early January marathon lol. But yes...it'll all get done...I just enjoy living in a swirl of chaos and disarray. Good luck to you and your training!!!

Lynne...CONGRATS ON HAWAII!!! :sunny:

------------

The legs were still a little wonky yesterday so I decided to test the waters on a 3 mile run. Turns out they were happy to be out there running and I fell into a nice quick pace. I could have pushed more miles but I wanted to see how they felt today after an easy run...make sure I wasn't tempting fate. Anyway...I also did get in a 60 minute Pilates mat class in addition to the one I taught.

Woke up today with happy legs...very little soreness....so I think I'm out of the woods. I did my XT on the ski machine, plus some pilates. I plan to run 5 miles tomorrow (assuming the roads are cleared from the snow storm) and then 8 on Saturday. We're expecting another big storm this weekend so I'll try to get those miles in before the snow and ice hit again.

Question.....Has anyone run the Kentucky Derby Marathon or Half Marathon? I'm looking for a spring event and that one fits the calendar. Would love a review if anyone has experienced it. TIA!

Thanks Amy!!! :)

You brought up something that has been on my mind again lately. Yak Tracks. Does anyone use those???? Last weekend portions of the path were snow/ice pitted and hard to walk on and though we saw some running I was afraid to try.

I keep wondering about them but wonder if they will feel weird. I saw the 'screw in the bottom of the shoes' trick again when reading some daily thing at runners world and was seriously thinking about that for AFTER the marathon.

Does anyone do anything special for walking/running in winter conditions? Last winter I went out still but waddled in many places and of course there were areas where I just sunk in the snow since the city only cleaned a certain course.

No training for me today. Got back late from my book club discussion.

Howard, good to see you in training mode. Be careful to not do too much so you do not get injured. I know you know.

Tricia, I take the shoes so they can see the wear pattern.

Amy, no Kentucky Derby event for me. Sounds interesting, and crowded if it is Derby weekend!

Tired, must go to sleep. Pleasant dreams everyone.
