Wk Of Aug 19 - WISH Walking/Running Club

Yesterday marked my first "official" training day for the WDW full in 2008 using John Bingham's walk/run plan. This time last year I was just getting off the couch to start training to train for the half this past January. Wow! I'm still amazed that I, Ms. Couch Potato 2005, completed a half-marathon. I'm still slow but I'm faster than I was this time last year. ;) :thumbsup2

For all of you starting to train for a full or half or 5K or just getting out there, all it takes is to put one step in front of the other, repeat. You can do it! :cheer2:

Bill - I hear you about getting older and the aches and pains associated with it. Howerver, it sounds like you are only getting better with that great PR! WTG!

Beth - Congrats on the 16-miler! Awesome! I'm scheduled to walk that far sometime in Nov. You're way ahead of me. ;)

wwDave - I'm going to remember that if I don't eat fat I won't get fat. Thank your patient for the tip. :lmao: Sending :wizard: for Erica. Summer colds are the pits!

Kristi - Love that photo! And yes, long sleeves? I'm so jealous. Congratulations on your new nephew, Luke. :goodvibes Congrats on your 3-miler!

Jen - love the girls reactions! I bet they are having a blast now.

nepatsfan - you're making progress! You are ahead of where I was this past year.

Matt - welcome back! I'm willing to bet that you will break your last DL time! :thumbsup2

Dave - my great-grandmother lived to be 103. She was amazing as well.

Lou - great 10-miler! You are speedy!!! Have fun at the World.

Angie - great job on the 7-miler and new PR!

monte - have fun camping!

moonie - ooooohhhhh, the stories I can tell regarding tequila shots. Let's just say I don't do those any more. ;) However, I still like my margaritas!

Cam - 100 pushups and crunches? Wow! :worship:

Martha - I'm sure you glad to have your DH back home. Congrats on the run. I'm waiting for 3 miles to be a snap for me. :)

Shan - I'm sure you'll love your Garmin. I can't do without mine. I got it from Amazon a year ago. You can't beat the price.

Jeanne - I try to envision how much 26 miles is all the time. Whenever I'm on the freeway, I'll look at mile markers and mark those miles. I then get a sick feeling in my stomach when I see just how far it is. :scared:

Dana - I'll leave the tequila shots to you and Moonie. Have fun battling it out.

Dona - another Arkie here...from Russellville. :wave2:

Angie (angietuck) - :wizard: for your back! Hope your DS first day at middle school went well.

Kevin (Daddy Beast) - :wizard: for a speedy recovery. My DH had neck surgery a few years ago. That neck brace became his best friend for a few months. We made different color sleeves to cover it. He refused to wear the Sponge Bob one (out in public) that his mom made for him. :confused3
Yikes on the air conditioner being out. :scared:

Kim - :cheer2: for the 5K. Hope it's cooler there. Oh, I see you finished already. Great job!!!

Heather - sending you and Kevin and kids :wizard: in getting the air conditioner fixed. I can't imagine being without one in this kind of heat.

Nancy - We sure could use some of that rain down here. We haven't had any in weeks.

Martha - I build in a cushion too. I know that something is bound to come up and at least this way I feel like I am still in control!

Susie - I don't do tequila shots anymore either. That quote was from my birthday party in April. I got together with a ton of old high school friends and we were drinking. They had all been buying me whiskey shots all night, since that's my liquor of choice, then someone set a glass down of patron for me. I don't remember a whole lot about that night after that. I do remember waking up the next morning with a bruise on my head from where I passed out in the tahoe on the way home with my head on the dash board!! Ever since then there's a running joke that Patron is EVIL!!

Well, yesterday I got in a 3 mile run near the park where Michael has football practice. It was just a nice slow run. We ran all the way down to the beach where I stopped and let Lucas out, took off his socks and shoes, and let him play in the water for a few minutes. He had a blast!!

Today I got in 5 miles. 0.5 mile warm up, 25 minutes intervals, 1 mile sprints, and 0.5 mile cool down. 5 miles total for a time of 42:54, avg mpm 8:34. The rest of my day today is spent cleaning and doing laundry!! Yay ME!!

Dana

Speaking of tequila....did I mention my friend Kristi was buying me shots in Atlantic City a few weeks ago?
I hadn't done that since my 21st birthday. Many, many moons ago! :rotfl2:
(ok, nothing to report - just had to pipe in about tequila shots!)

I just got back from the doctor's. I got a small lecture about cutting back on my diet coke addiction.
And all I could think of was my fellow WISHer caffeine addicts!

Hey teammates! Did 4 miles this morning--just felt average-not great, not bad. Then did some arm work in the weight room. Tomorrow is my first day on the job at the new fitness center (well, at least new to me--it's been around for 40 years!) And then after work, I'm gonna try out the facility.

Kristi and Leana--Congrats on becoming Aunties! I'm going to be an aunt for the 2nd time in Sept. BIL's wife is due Sept. 29th! Can't wait to hold a baby again. I'm done having them myself, so I have to get my baby fix somewhere!

Martha--at least now you have some vindication that it's not just b/c Craig left that things started breaking! Good luck starting the marathon training. It will go by so fast--I can't believe I'm almost done with an 18 week plan already!

Susie--goodluck to you with your marathon training start up as well. DH said he saw an extended weather forecast that has temps in the 80s late next week for highs. Keeping my fingers crossed that it pans out!

Kim--Great job on the 5K. Have a great time in Toronto!

FLBill--I think it was you who asked, forgive me if I'm incorrect, but about my walk breaks--I tried to keep them at a minute--give or take a little. Enough time to get a nice long drink and catch my breath--but not long enough where I didn't feel like getting started again!

Angie--great job on your 7 miles! Sorry you had some back pain, but heck, you still completed 7 miles! Too bad about the ToT--WISH you could join us!

Jackie--Sounds like you have wonderful places to run as well. I'm taking DH to our River Trail this weekend for our 18 miler. He's never run out there before and think changing up the routine will do him some good!

Kevin and Heather--PD and hugs to both of you! Hope the AC gets fixed really soon! If our AC went out I would not be a happy camper! Have you guys had any flooding? BIL said they had a little in Sugarland where they live. Kevin, PD that your recovery goes smoothly!

Okay, well, kiddos are wanting to eat--duty calls! Have a great Tuesday all!

Bill: how is everyone doing at home? The baby must be almost 6 months now isn't he? Is big brother still enjoying his status of older brother?

Everyone is doing pretty good. Timmy will be 5 months in a couple of weeks but he is growing like a weed. The doctor said we can start the rice cereal so the household is rejoicing. Billy still likes the status but I think the novelty is beginning to wear off. I think he is beginning to realize that he doesn't have all our attention and makes sure we realize that.

Bill

There are different types of trails out there. I had never been on the bike/bridle trails before - they're apparently part of the greenway system, and they're really wide and made of a fine crushed gravel surface. Perfect for running! We were on the Reedy Creek Trail and saw lots of runners (and cyclists). Our running group is running out there on Sept 1st, so I'll know more about the trails then.
Jackie

Jackie! Let me know when you run Reedy Creek! I live 5 minutes from there!
AAAAHHHH! Umstead! Great trail races there!

Greeting fellow WISH racing team mates - :goodvibes

This morning my alarm went off at 4:15am. I opened my eyes and thought..."Well, this is it." Today was my first day back to training! :woohoo: YAY! It's the first step, so to speak, on the road to January 12th.

Whooooo hoooo! :dance3:

I crack myself up! Last night I laid everything out - shorts, shirt, underthings, Kayanos, WISH socks, water bottle... Boy, was I ready! :yay:

So I did 20 minutes on the TM at 15/min.

OK not great but heck, I'll take it! :thumbsup2 Oh it feels so good to be back in the groove. YAY!:cheer2:

Canada was great. We had a lot of fun, Charlie has six fabulous dives. I went out on the boat one day, went shopping the rest of the time. Brockville and the 1000 Islands region is absolutely gorgeous. Came home to major major stepson drama. I can't even talk about it. Makes me nutso. A girl needs to train to counteract all this BS, KWIM?

Anyway, I'm so glad to be back training! Geez, can you tell??? Miss you all so much. I feel so out of touch. But I'm baaaack! :woohoo:

No training to report this week! I am starting to feel a little bit human again, though, I still can't talk!

Have to catch up on all the news I missed as I haven't even felt like getting on the computer til now!

Erica:)

Kristi - Congrats on the PR!

Lily - sorry about the stonker. I've had a couple of those this past week. I haven't even wanted to post about them.

Judy - WooHoo:cool1: :cool1: Glad you're back to training!

The weather here has been ugly. Rain all day yesterday, rain today and possibly rain all day tomorrow! I don't really mind the rain, except it messes up my training outside. (i'll walk outside if it starts raining while I'm out, but I don't like to begin my walk when it's pouring outside :confused3 )

I leave for the "World" in 4 days and I'm getting excited! Staying at BWV. I'm taking my 8 y/o niece and I'm not telling her until we're ready to leave Sat. morning. Her Mom is secretly packing her bag. I can't wait to see the look on her face :goodvibes

For some reason whenever I do gravel trails, I end up with pebbles in my shoes and it's so annoying. Anyone else have this problem?

Yes, this happens to me all the time, as I train on dirt roads! For the winter, I get pants that go down over my ankles. For summer, I have nothing to fix it cause I wear capris.

Rachael – is that the Minna Lessig DVD you were talking about? I really like it also. Now if I could just use it more often... ;)

Yes, it sure is! It is one of the best workout DVD's I've ever done.

Someone asked me last week if it gets hot under the poncho, and the answer is YES! I had to wear it yesterday, because it was raining so hard. I got a terrible workout in, not very far and not very fast. I'm scratching it and going walking again today. Long lay dead, the poncho. I had a hair in my eye the whole time, when I turned my head my ear buds would come out, and the wicket-wicket sound the stupid thing makes is very annoying! :scared1:

So, the rest of the week training wise is: 2.5 miles plus a 30 minute power stretching show I recorded from FitTV tonight, video tomorrow, 2.5 miles Thursday, Friday not a dang thing, Saturday 3 miles, Sunday 2 miles.

Time to start thinking about what next weeks' schedule will be. I'm trying to work up so when I start the 'real' training schedule October 8th I'll be ready.

Have a great Tuesday afternoon everyone!

Rachael

Good afternoon/evening Team.

Last night I walked 2.25 miles at an 18:20 pace, 40 seconds a mile faster than the same route Sunday. (The great thing about being fairly new at this is the confidence building that occurs when you see big cuts like that. Unfortunately, they will eventually tail off (hopefully later rather than sooner).) Dropping more of my excess weight probably won't hurt my pace too much either. I'm feeling good today after last night's walk and am thinking about going out again tonight if the current rain lets up a little or stops. Maybe God wants to make sure I don't push it too much too early (knowing I probably won't use the treadmill).

*Your Royal Highness of YARCdom* Congrats on your training. Reading your post made me think of a kid on Christmas eve getting everything ready for Santa.

*Kim* When I was in Toronto a few month ago on business I almost went to a Bluejays game. They had the dome closed that night though and, being old fashioned, I couldn't bring myself to watching a game indoors. Do they still have hockey in Toronto? Are the Makebeliefs still around. ;) (Uh oh, I hear my 2:45 AM ride to WWS on marathon morning driving off without me.)

*Erica* Good to "see" you back and apparently somewhat vertical. Hope you continue to feel better.

Well my walk in the rain didn't happen. By the time I was ready to go the rain was over and it left nothing but the heat and lots of yummy humidity. I went out for a brisk walk of 7.75 miles in 1:42 even. I was whipped at the end although I think it was more the heat than the distance.

Judy, oh Great and Beautiful Queen:snooty: of the court of "YARC", glad your finally getting the steps in again. Do we need to come up there and thump someone for you?

PatsFan Bill, sounds like you are really getting in a good grove. Like you said your PRs will be coming pretty frequently. I love the first year of training, it's so satisfying to see that fast improvement.

I'm listening to the news as I read this, they are discussing the theory that it's a virus that causes obesity. Whatever.

Have a good evening y'all.

Hi everyone,
So I don't know what my problem is but I seem to keep checking in every month or couple of months fully intending to be a regular on here and the life just gets in the way. I do check in on the postings from time to time and I've been keeping up with my training but haven't had the time to stay consistent on this site.
Now that official training is right around the corner (and already started for most of you), I'm really hoping I can be more active on here and be a part of this great support network you all have going. As some of you know I'm training overseas in Japan and mostly on my own, which does get tedious at times so this is probably the closest I'll get to a "running group".
When is everyone starting their official training plans for the Disney full? I think I'll probably start mine in the next week or 2. I ran both a 10 K and 5K last week. I did the 5K on Sat and finished in 27:30 and completed the 10K on Sun in 58:54 although my Garmin read the distance as 6.15 (instead of 6.2).
Anyway, sorry for the long post but I hope you all are doing well and I hope to try and check in here at least once a week from now through Jan. Happy Training!

Welcome Kristin. Okinawa is special for Erica and I. We met and married there. We both were stationed there at Kadena AFB. Our daughter was born there. You shouldn't have any problem finding a place to train but the humidity there is just intense.

Dave:hippie:

Hi Dave,
The 5K I ran was on Kadena and I worked up there during the first 2 years of our tour here. My husband is in the Marine Corps. We love it over here too but the heat and humidity are definitely insane, especially this time of year. I have been getting up to run at 4:30 on my long days and it's still rough even that early. How long ago were you stationed over here? I keep telling myself that I'll have a slight advantage after training over here in the heat/humidity and from running all these crazy hills around here!

We were there from 1981 till 1986. You won't have an advantage over most of the states this year. The heat and humidity at least in the eastern states has also been insane this year. We actually hit 106 a couple of days ago here in southern Ky.

I remember training on those hills there, I still do the hills here, we are an area of rolling hills.

I'm listening to the news as I read this, they are discussing the theory that it's a virus that causes obesity. Whatever.

Well Dave, all I can say is that I must have a really big and bad virus then. Maybe its that same virus that has made my hair stop growing out of the top of my head and instead grow down through my nose and out my ears? And here all this time I just thought I was height and follically challenged. Yeah, I am a little over 6 feet tall, but given my weight I should be about 11 feet 8 inches tall.

I sound like I'm as full of stuffing as a Christmas Turkey about half the time but those bizarre stories are really out there.

Dave-I believed you. I am just amazed at the varying explanations that can be developed. With me though, I think I just eat -- I mean ate -- too much, too often. Kind of like a Chicago Democrat during the Kennedy/Nixon election--I believe the slogan was something like "vote early and often" (at least it should have been). Luckily, even the deceased Democrats somehow got their votes in for JFK.
