Wk Of Aug 12 - WISH Walking/Running Club

Leana--all I can say about that is "pathetic"! Heck, at least Oprah actually did the event for her t-shirt. Anyone can get the t-shirt--the medal at the end is where it's at!:thumbsup2

Krista--glad to hear that Chi-town was fun. I love Chicago, love to visit, that is, not to live there. Too bad about the race--maybe next year I'll forego CDC and put the Chicago Marathon in it's place.

Judy--Woohoo on getting two dress shoes on today!

Well, got some xt in today--or I guess that's what you could call chasing my kiddos around a waterpark in 100 degree heat. I'm in sort of a slump right now. My LRs are getting really long and lonesome--I really need a buddy--anyone willing to conference in for a LR this weekend??;) I should run tonight, but I am so tired of the TM and it's still so blasted hot. Nevermind me, Debbie Downer! Thanks for letting me whine a little

For some reason, I think I'm just a glutton for punishment, but I offered today to be team captain for my local mom's group for the Race for the Cure. The event in AR is one of the largest in the country--last year there were around 30,000 women--amazing!!! But now, I gotta round up the troops to register this year and somehow conjure up a creative gene and design a team t-shirt--any ideas?????

A few things I forgot to add to my race report on the other thread.

The morning of the race, my neighbor picked me up to head into the city. After I tried to explain to him about the WISH team, he called me a dork (not in a mean way). Anyway, Cam told my ds5 at the end of the race that I won. Later that day, my neighbor stopped by and ds5 ran up to him and told him my mommy won and you didn't!:cool1: serves him right for calling me a dork.

Cam -Thanks for telling my son I won.

Mel - thanks for the lime green mickey head. My ds3 has not let go of it for 48hours. He told his brother not to touch it, that mommy's friend gave it to us. Never get in the middle of a 3 year old and his Mickey!

Carrie - thanks for the sponges, I have to admit that I had no idea what they were for when you handed them out on Saturday. Did the look on my face give that away? By mile 5 or so on Sunday, I had it figured out. They are great!

Jen - Matthew had fun playing with Emma at lunch. Your kids are cuties.

Can someone direct me to the thread about ToT meet? Is there a meet on Saturday?

Meghan - Sorry you're having such a tough time. Take it slow and don't push too hard. You have to be there in January. Annie is so looking forward to talking Indy with you! How about those last couple of races?

Krista - Glad you like the medal; too bad the race was such a bummer. Columbus will be great! And maybe you're right to plan on a break after that. I'm already wondering just how long this obsession will go before I have to slow down...

Judy - Hooray for two real shoes! We'll be back on the TM together in no time!

Karla & Ali - :welcome: This group is absolutely the greatest.

Terri - pixiedust: for your dog. It's so hard when they get to that age.

DD and I took the dog for a 2 mile hike in a county park yesterday. It was a nice break from the usual routes! I need to run today, but may wait till tomorrow AM and hit the TM, and clean house tonight instead. Someone asked me at church yesterday what I was training for and I actually told her the Raleigh marathon instead of the half-marathon - I guess I'm truly psyching myself up to run the full? What have you guys DONE to me? :scared:

Jackie

Hey all... just a quicky from me. I hope to post my race report tonight when I get home (with pictures!!!). I am totally exhausted today, a walking zombie. MY FOOT FEELS GOOD, but my body is tired. Maybe the 5+ hour drive after a 1/2 marathon isn't so great for recovery!!!!

Krista - I told DH that I really liked the race, but wouldn't do it again without the WISH team there. I agreed with a bunch of your issues. And seriously, if I wasn't with Mel the whole time, I am not sure I would have enjoyed it. Talking and walking and running with Mel made the time go by so fast and it really was a great time. Thankfully I didn't have to use the restroom because that was a big downside that I noticed. And thankfully I carried my own water. BUT, I didn't get a towel and that irks me just a bit. And the fact that they re-routed people at the end was a little off for a Bingham race.

Oh and thanks for the compliment on my girls. They really were well behaved around all the WISHers... shewwww. They were a bit naughty with us tho, but they get that way when we are in a hotel room and they want to party all night!!!!

Maggie - It was great meeting you this weekend. I am so glad you were able to walk with WISHers. It makes the race so much more enjoyable.

Oh... gotta run. I will post more tonight.

Hi, everyone! I am so sorry I am not able to catch up yet. Just wanted to mention that the CDC was awesome just because of the amazing WISH team!!! Lily stayed with me the whole time and we were joined off and on by so many of our awesome teammates! The only downside was missing so many of you and my beloved race partner, Rhonda, who would have only added to Lily and my fun (how is that possible?). I will say that Lily and I had some awesome miles for the first several and then started taking pictures! "Oh, Lily, stand over here. There are gorgeous flowers behind you!" "Oh, stop for a second. That building would make a great background for a picture!" Heck, even the official race photographers thought we were nuts when five WISHers dead-stopped in front of him for group pix! :lmao: It was such an awesome weekend except for our missing teammates! Thank you so much, Lily, for being such a great race partner, even through the "bite me" zones (to use Coach Jenny's professional terminology!). :lmao:

Oh, one last thing -- Reebok was a race sponsor and had the most awesome ad campaign going -- "Run Easy" with sayings like "Why Hit the Wall? It Hurts. Run Easy" and "Run at the Speed of Chat" and "Enjoy the Ride. RUn Easy" We told the guys at the expo Reebok booth that we will patronize their company and not that other one and they knew EXACTLY what we were talking about.

Oh, drats! I just thought of something else. Friday, Howard and I stopped at the Snickers Energy booth to buy bars and they weren't selling them and gave us each a couple for the race. All three of those college aged kids said they admired us for doing the race and all professed to have neither the strength nor the fitness to do such a thing. When I urged them to consider walking it next year, they all insisted that 13.1 miles is really far and the heat is bad and they just really didn't think they could do it. I am hoping we might have persuaded them otherwise.

Okay, have to get back to work and I'll catch up soon. We walked in the house at 2am this morning and I am barely functioning at work!

Yesterday I went for a double shot of yoga and pilates. We did some hip work in pilates that really made my piriformis cry out when we worked the right side. It was a great class though...

Today I went for active release for the first time to help out my piriformis issues. It was pretty interesting. It basically involves the doctor pressing down on the painful spots while you stretch your leg out and move it different ways, all in an attempt to break down scar tissue. Obviously the scar tissue is building up near my sciatica, hence the pain. Basically my lower back is weak, which makes my hips overcompensate so they never fully rest and recover, even while standing and sitting, hence the build up of scar tissue. The good news is the scar tissue can be broken down and if I can address my weak lower back issues hopefully this won't be a reoccuring issue for me. I'll let you know if I can tell a difference after a couple of sessions since I know some folks were interested in how this would work out for me. I know there are a few WISHers with booty pain out there! The Dr. figured I would need about 4 - 6 sessions, so it isn't like this will be an ongoing thing... And the good news is running doesn't make it worse so no issues with keeping on top of training. Tonight I'm going to aim for 5 - 6 miles.

Congrats to all of our CDC'ers and all the other racers this weekend. I'm sorry to hear there were some disappointments on the course - definitely doesn't sound like a John Bingham type of race! No porta potties, no towels, taking the mileage markers down...?? It sounds like the group had a great time though. Can I see a picture of the medal so I can have medal envy??

Hey guys! I know I have been MIA!

Congrats to the CDCers! Hope to read race reports soon.

Hey Matt! Glad you are home....

Here is a pic from my ride on Saturday. Me in the front. Not my MS ride but training for it. That is my "official" MS jersey I am wearing...and it is Panther colors!:cool1: My team is named TrueWheels and we are (JIC someone does not know) raising $$ for the fight against MS!

I sort of crosstrained today. I spent over an hour in the pool with Zack. We had a half hour swim class and then stayed and kept practicing. Not sure it's very much xt for me - but I'll take it! My start of ToT training starts next week - and then I am getting serious!

I started another thread, but I thought I'd mention it here too.
I am going to volunteer during the Full at WDW. Anyone want to join me?

Chicago was very cool...what a neat city! We didn't get to see nearly as much as we wanted, though I'm afraid I spent too much time walking around the 2 days prior to the race. I met my best friend from high school and we walked to Navy Pier on Friday, then the walk to and from Gino's (plus the shopping along the way :thumbsup2 ) on Sat was too much. Sat night my feet and ankles felt like they do after a full day at EPCOT.

We found a fabulous chocolate place at the Westfield mall called Ethel's Chocolate Lounge! Oh my! We got a chocolate smoothie which came with two pieces of chocolate. It's set up like a coffee bar with cozy chairs and comfy couches. Most tasty!

I never sleep well the night before a race, but this one wasn't too bad. I got a solid 5 hours before I woke up at 3am and couldn't go back to sleep. I finally got up at 4:45 to get ready and went down to the lobby to meet the team. We all walked over together to get ready for the race. There were plenty of porta potties at the start area which was good, because as Krista mentioned, they were startlingly absent the remainder of the race. Jen spotted one downtown, but it belonged to a construction site. Jen and I started out with the 2:45 pace dude who was doing intervals at R4/W2. We stuck with him for about an hour, then downshifted to R3/W2 for the second hour and walked the last hour. Neither of us had run with anyone before and we weren't looking for PRs so it was perfect. It really makes the miles go by faster when you have someone running with you. I don't think I would've stuck with running as long as I did if Jen hadn't been there. Thank you!

And big thanks to Carrie for bringing the sponges again! It was a huge help!

Weather was definitely hot, though a tad chilly at the start. I'm thinking less humid than home because I didn't feel that stifling 'wrap-around-and suck-the-life-out-of-you' sensation I get at home. I think CDC should be an evening race...start it once the sun gets behind the buildings and it would be cool with the breeze coming off the lake. I imagine traffic control would be tough then, though.

I did love the no-pressure atmosphere of this race. John Bingham pays people to be last (the Balloon Cuties). He even said if you get tired and want a ride to mile 11, just ask ;) The medals were very cool! Unfortunately, I couldn't stay around after the race to see everyone finish...we had to get going to get to the soccer game on time.

Of course, the whole excitement for DD14 revolved around the soccer game (US v N Zealand). We found the US team was staying in our hotel so she got a few pictures with some of her favorite players. The US won, 6-1, which really doesn't reflect how well the N Zealand keeper played. If she hadn't made some spectacular saves, the US would've easily scored in double digits. The game was really hot though. We walked over to Soldier Field, starting at about 11am, got there about 11:30 so were out in the direct sun for over 3 hours. I ended up with a wicked migraine...I think likely due to dehydration, my indicator was dark yellow when we were at Midway.

Things I learned from this race:
1. Running with a friend is the best way to race!
2. Limit sight-seeing prior to the race.
3. No mid-afternoon sporting events immediately after the race.

I just posted my race report. I think I got a tad bit wordy tho....

Mel - I loved running with you. I think you pulled me along as much as I did you. Just awesome. I posted in my report that I am not sure I would do CDC again unless there were WISHers there. It was just plain AWESOME. Totally made the race. Next up.... Full Marathon!!!

I also posted some pics. I didn't have many, because I didn't run with a camera, dh had it.

I decided to take this week off of running just to rest my body. Next week I will be in WDW and will most likely not run either. I think this will be a good break before jumping into full training.

:yay: GOOD EVENING TEAM :yay:

Congratulations to all the CDC runners for finishing in not so great conditions!!:cool1: :cool1:

So tonight Bobby and I ran together and he did 3!! :cheer2: GO BOBBY!!

I was going to add another mile but the thunder and lightning scared me into the house.

So I signed up tonight to do a race on Labor Day -- The Canes Cross Country Classic 5K!! My first race since MINNIE and I am very excited. It gives me a goal to shoot for the next couple of weeks.

I am going to whine for a second because I was looking at the results from last year and if I had continued on the pace I was at in April and May I would have come in the top 3 in my age group :sad2: OK done pouting!! For the first time in a long time I am very excited and feel like I have something to shoot for.

Still trying to decide about the marathon!!

Have a good night everyone

angie

Just a few quick thoughts...

I do races for t-shirts! I also do them for medals, food, braggin rights, travel excuses, and something to keep me in shape. Are those good reasons?

nucpharm -- I will run with you this weekend! How far? I've got 18 on the agenda... I sympathize with your loneliness as you know from the October thread.

I LOVE THE CDC MEDAL. Too bad that the race wasn't quite on target with what you wanted. Congrats and getting out there and doing a summer race!

I went 17 miles today at a very slow pace. I live in a small town, so I did a lot of running back and forth. I think the lawn-mowing company guy thought I was checking him out or something and gave me a two-toot salute and a wave.:confused3

So glad to be back and reading about you guys! Wowza!

Krista - Thanks for posting the pictures of the medals. They definitely are very cool!!

I just got in from a 6 miler. It was pretty cool out again - 51F and overcast - which made for a pretty comfortable run. I picked a pretty hilly route to run, with the first mile being pretty well all uphill. Then the next two miles are mostly downhill. I was feeling pretty good so I opted for 6 miles instead of 5, then realized that I was feeling so good because I had been running downhill for so long! ;) I turned around though and the hills all felt pretty decent to me, so progress is happening! The highlight of the run was for sure at the 5 mi mark when I saw three young deer on the hillside next to me. They were so pretty and so close..!! I finished up the run in 1:08:48 for an 11:28/mi pace.

I was thinking today all the way back to my first 10K run. I didn't train for it at all and I really wasn't a runner. I felt so proud because I ran the whole way, but I remember feeling like I'd never be the same going down stairs the day afterwards! I highly doubted that I would ever do that long a run again. Now I'm hitting those 6 milers out of the park like nobody's business. It sure feels good! Now that I'm comfortable with the distance I'm hoping I can improve the pace at my next 10K race next month to get to somewhere hovering around the 1 hour mark....

Hi all! SOrry about my absence as of late!

My last few days of wok rwere very hectice adn flowed into part of my few days off. I ende up with 2.5 days off, one of which was traveling to CDC. SO, those 1.5 days were packed.

Seeing WISHers at CDC was wonderful! I only WISH I had more time with everyone.

CDC itself as hot. I am proud of how I did in the heat, but nothing fabulous. Several comments on our shirts. That's till so cool to hear.

FIrst day of my new job was great! Wow. Usually the first week is rought, but, get this, I am excited to go back. I did not want to leave after 8 hours, because I still had fun stuff on my to do list! :O Plus, amazingly enough, you need permission to work more than 8 hours a day. :scared1: Yeah, to quote a line from ANnie (sorry it's not Disney) "I think I'm gonna' like it here!"

HOpefully, I'll get in a routine of checking the baords after work soon adn will try to catch up. Miss you all! Thansk to all of you who sent me warm thoughts for mey first day and fo all teh good thoughts fo CDC!:grouphug:

BTW, CDC this weekend just reaffirmed what an incredible group we have. I WISH I had more time with every WISHer that was there!!!!!

:welcome: Karla!

:welcome: Ali!

I'll have both of you on the list next week!

Krista...I was totally dragging, but I took the day off today so I could do that. Definitely not looking forward to going back tomorrow. Hope your tummy's feeling better! Are you sure it was just the food? :rolleyes1

Jen...it was really cool running with you! I felt bad when I saw the final results...we could've gotten your PR. Of course, we know we'll PR the full ;) I'm less nervous about it now.

Carrie...we never seem to get much time to hang out together. I even brought your Janet Evanovich book with me, but never got around to giving it to you. I'll mail it to you soon!

Angie...you'll do great at the Canes 5K! That's a fast field!

Kristi...that would be cool for you to volunteer for the full! You'll have to let us know where your station is.

Christa...great photo! How's the training going?

Cam...great seeing you and Howard again! I'm sorry I missed seeing you finish.

Judy...you guys don't have to behave on my account ;) .

Speaking of, we entertained ourselves at Gino's by writing on the walls. Apparently that's a tradition at the restaurant, so if anyone goes there, look for the hidden Mickeys :thumbsup2

And I'm not sure quite how it happened...DD14 wanted to go to the humane society today. She needs volunteer hours throughout high school to qualify for scholarships, so we asked, but they require volunteers to be 18. We have been talking about getting a golden retriever for a long time and had decided we were finally ready so have been working on the application. While at the humane society, we checked to see if they had anyone available...and found a black and white border collie mix named Lucy. She's 13 and had been turned in twice but the whole staff say she's the sweetest dog ever. There's been some jockeying for position but looks like she'll get along with our current border collie mix. Not sure how the cat's feeling about the situation though...he looks extraordinarily irritated.

Really glad everyone enjoyed the lime green Mickeys. For anyone that's confused, I found them at EPCOT last weekend. It's a little hard foam Mickey (kinda like a small version of the antenna toppers) attached to a chain. They had them in all colors, including lime green, so I got a bunch and brought them to CDC.

Question for y'all that have done both Bingham and Higdon training: which do you prefer? I've been looking at the higdon plans and find them interesting, but am worried about those midweek 8 and 10 mile SR.

OK, Just skimmed htrough and, I must admit, mostly just hit the CDC comments.

First, just need to clarify that Ann, Bob, Karen adn John were the wonderful ones who were first in line and got us awesome tables. Scott adn I just took orders.

Second, Being with teh WISHers made teh trip 150% worthwhile. I LOVED it.

Third, Medal was great.

Lastly, I hated the course, even the downtown parts. I loved teh view on the lakeshore, bbut was so dead by teh time we got there, it felt like 4 or 5 miles of the stretch wher you can see the ball around WS, but it take froever to get to it. I coudl see the city in teh distance, but it took forever to reach it. However, from reading MfM, it sounde like some people are city runners and some are not. The Penguin loves city runs much more than Disney. That' sjust not us. I think hearing of how much the Penguin loes CIty races and thinking that this aws one of his had it way over hyped for me. That didn't help. I'm so glad I was ther adn saw all the WISHers, though. I dont' want anyeone who said it was great to think I reggret this weekend fr one second. :grouphug:

To end on a good note: There was a group call teh Eilah walkers or something like that. They had cool biblical quotes on their signs. Even better, thhuogh, they had GREAT people out there cheering adn slapping EVRYONE's hands. Their scream team was so awesome that I had to tell one of them so when we were cheering after the race. That was very cool!

Good evening, WISHers!

Congrats to all the CDCers and other recent racers! Krista, thanks for sharing the pics of the medal - you're right, it IS awesome!

I'm afraid I've had a bit of bad luck the past two days. Yesterday I'd aimed to take a lazy afternoon bike ride through town, but I ended up running into a curb ("Officer, I swear it came outta NOWHERE! :confused3 ") and getting banged up a bit. I also got a 3 mile walk I hadn't planned on, since the bike shop told me I couldn't have my bike back until Wednesday (even though they didn't look at all busy to me when I was there...)

Tonight I went out for 6 miles, and came in right around an 11 min/mi pace, which is typical for me, but I felt like I was working much harder than usual to get the same results. I think part of it might have been the humidity - the air felt thicker and more difficult to breathe than it has on other runs - and part of it was I don't think I was as hydrated as I usually am when I go out. Most days I come home from work and guzzle water down 30-60 mins before I plan to go out, but tonight I went shopping after work, so when I got back I ran straight out the door as soon as I'd dropped everything off (so that I could be back before it got dark...I only barely made it). I brought water to drink during the run, of course, but I definitely think my body was missing its normal saturation...my heart rate felt faster overall, too, so everything sort of coallesced to make a less-than-stellar run.

But oh well, tomorrow's another day!

I posted this on the other thread... but wanted to make sure everyone saw it.

I wanted to thank all of the WISHers that attended the CDC for the friendship and company during our trip to Chicago. The city was impressive, friendly and beautiful.

Carrie and Scott were great roomies, we had a great time sharing space and the race prep with them.

I enjoyed meeting up with everyone at the Expo, at Gino's East (Yum!), at Wicked, and on race morning. I ran the race all by my lonesome... Lynette and Kevin Z weren't there this time to run with me I guess.

I started out at or around an 8:30 pace. I finished the first 5K at 29:27 or something similar. I slipped into a 10 minute mile pace, which was comfortable and sustainable, for most of the rest of the race. I hit a not so nice small wall just after mile 11. I didn't have any beans, Gu or other nutrition on me so I had to suck it up and tough out the rest of the race. I did have to slow down to a quick walk several times throughout the later part of the race to conserve what I had in the tank and to breathe a bit. I did this and kept my eye on the clock, keeping to the 10 minute miles if possible.

I was ahead of the 2:00 pace group up until about mile 10, then they passed me. The 2:15 pace group never passed me. I guess they finished right behind me (I didn't look back).

Here is my official time which matched my Garmin (in time only). The over passes, tunnels, etc... made the Garmin mileage WAYYYY off.

1612 Howard Wilmington DE 44 M 2:15:35 It equates to a 10:20 pace overall.

I did get a towel, but noticed that they allowed several people to grab a couple at the finish. I was given one full of ice, it was a welcome treat at the end of a hot race.

I was upset that there were no "Ouis Ouis" (wee wee's) as they are called out there on the course. There was one for volunteers at the turn at the southern most point in the race, but it was inundated with runners when I passed it. Fortunately, or unfortunately, I was somewhat dehydrated (despite sipping on the Powerade I was carrying with me) and never needed one after the pre-race pit stop.

It was fun, the course had its good and bad points. If it were not for the WISH Team (which made me proud to be a member!) I wouldn't have enjoyed the experience as much.

Maggie, it was great to meet you and your family!

Lilly, thank you for hanging with Cam during the race... it sounds like you both had a lot more fun than I did.

Andrew and Darcy, it was really nice to meet you both!

Krista & Steve ~ It was fun sharing a harrowing cab ride to hell with you, or was that to Hilton? :lmao:

A great big :grouphug: to everyone who traveled from IL, MI, NJ, OH, DE, FL, etc. to attend the CDC. I am looking forward to seeing everyone at the Tower of Terror race in a couple of months.

Howard
