Wk of April 6 - WISH Walking/Running Club

Hello All

I can't possibly match Debra's "War and Peace" post, so I'll pick and choose and apologize for the many omissions.

Debra, first

I'm glad your birthday trip went well. Tell me it wasn't beastly hot and humid in the mornings already. Please?

Lily

Great work. We'll have to watch out for you flying by people on the 4th.

Jeff

Sorry about the run of really bad news. The hard part of being an adult is you have to deal with stuff like that and keep going.

And you are so right about the costs on the islands. We got the purest shock on Kauai when we paid $7 for a gallon of milk :scared1: . But the sunshine, blue water, and super friendly people are free. And did I mention the surf  ?

Judith Ann

So you claim to be back among the living? Let me be the judge of that in 24 days pirate: .

Vic and WWDave

I always trust the non-coms.

Carrie

So you planned to run hard right after the half? Geez, don't they teach common sense at engineering school? You body is fatigued, let it have some days to rest and recover. I know you're a lot more fit than last year, but if you over do it in the next few days you'll have nothing in your legs for Minnie.

Cam

You too, take care of yourself, and here's hoping you'll be down next month.

Bill

Get better. Nice of the boys to incubate the virus before giving it to you. Someday when you want them to do something for you, be sure to pull this one out.

And where are the lovely Heather and Rhonda? You do know we may be sending a daughter down there sometime after Christmas. We've already volunteered you both as surrogate families. No thanks are necessary.

From reading the reports of Scott, Amy, and Angie, I suspect this potential running group is way over my head for Minnie. Is there anyone out there who can guarantee a 9:15-9:30 mpm pace for the first 2 miles in the Minnie? If you can, I'd love to run on your shoulder. I promise to behave and only tell funny stories.

I did learn today that using your iPod for actual thinking when running sounds good in theory but fails in practice. I have my french lessons loaded on it, and figured I could brush up and practice while running. Ecoutez en anglais, ecoutez en francais, repetez en francais. Again and again. I was shocked at how uneven and rough the running has been through 2 sessions of this. Today after 4 miles I had enough and turned the thing off, and the running instantly became a million times easier. Plus the other folks on the track surely wondered about the fool running around talking to himself in french. Not just some nut, heck no, a foreigh nut.

Well I have to go. 65 students are expecting me to explain obscure finance theory and practice to them first thing tomorrow morning. The good part is by this time of the semester they're so broken down I could make it up and get it all wrong, and they'd just write it down and try to memorize it before the final.

Best

Craig

FIre DAncer - Welcome!!!!! While we all really want to do all Disney races, we seem to have traveling teams and teams that meet in in between places. Don't know where Strongville is, but we have WISHers in Cleveland, CIncinatti, IL... You should eb able tofind other places to run with WISHers. It's the enxt best thing!

It is just southwest of Cleveland. I do a lot of 5K's and 10K's around Cleveland so if any WISHers do some let me know.

I think I may survive now. Although in the fit of sickness, I signed up for Minnie since Lynnda decided not to do it because of Danskin the next weekend.

Hopefully training can start tonight since I think I can breathe without coughing now. Granted the weather has to cooperate but that is a different problem that I can't control.

Craig - You have trained your students well. Unfortunately I was never that trusting in my business classes. I tended to keep the professor on their toes and I am sure they hated me by the end of it. Although I was able to teach one an easier method of calculating something. Their boss was a little amazed that an engineer could know something a finance person didn't. :lmao: I would love to take a class with you sometime so if you ever get a teaching gig in Orlando let me know. I promise to behave. :rolleyes1

Lily - Glad you have been cleared to train. Even with the little break in it, you are flying.

Lynne - Glad that things are becoming finalized. Hope you enjoy everything in Hawaii. Good luck with your tri season this year.

Cam - Glad you have found a time to get your workouts in. Still hope you can come to Minnie.

Debra - Glad you had a good trip. We tried hard to have nice weather for you but as with the marathon, I just don't have the pull necessary.

Judy - Yeah for the run and no coughing. Maybe there is hope for me but I didn't get to miss a week and a half of work. I think I was robbed. ;)

Kevin - Glad the end is in sight. Be careful these last few days.

FireDancer - Welcome. Hope you are able to get some encouragement from us.

Vic - Since you aren't teaching Timmy correctly about cars, he is just wandering around aimlessly. He has attached himself to Tony Stewarts Home Depot car and seems to have fun with it. See what happens when mentors start slacking with proper car etiquette. :lmao:

Stephanie - Glad you made it throught the storms last week. Good luck with planning your race schedule.

Apologies to all I have missed or can't remember quickly. Hopefully I can get more free time tonight to catch up on everything.

Bill

Claire - Glad you are leaving teh not-so-bright-extended friend of friend's dog home. lol. Hope your 5 miles was good!

Christa - When I have long psots, I do them in Word adn copy and paste. Saves much frustration. WTG on 30 miles.

Lily - You rock!

Craig - Now, I wasn't planning on going hard or doing the 60 min we were supposed to do. I was thinking that I always run Saturday after a LR. Howver, I forgot the fact that my race was on SUnday and that one day of rest makes a world of difference. :confused3 I coaimed to be an engineer but I never claimed to use the brain that god gave me. ;) Oh, but wait. The Brilliant MIT prof thought he could learn a foreign language while running? ;) ;) ;) I think we might be even now!

BillF - SO glad you're doign better! You weren't goign to do teh Minnie?????:scared1: Glad oone of you came to your senses! ;)

I rested last night. Ahhhh....... TOnight will be 60 min. It's 40 and supposed to rain. I am so looking forward to this quality time with the TM, NOT!

TONY STEWART!! Give that kid a swift kick in the backside! :lmao:

I guess uncle Vic will have to do something about that. :rotfl:

Kristen: Married at 20???? Half the time, I couldn't even remember the name of my BF du jour when I was 20yo. (I may have had a maturity issue. ) I'm so looking forward to meeting you in January.
LOL! Yes, I was a child bride. :bride: Looking forward to meeting you also. Thanks!
As the one who was blessed to marry that young, beautiful 20yo, I am pretty happy that she not only remembered my name but also agreed to spend her life with me! Love you, baby!Z
Awww, thanks, Hon. Love you too. Now enough mushy stuff...::lovestruc
My being a runner has become part of who my kids are. They identify themselves through me. So its not "this is my mom, she watches Oprah and tests computer programs" but this is "this is my mom, she runs marathons."Cecilia
I LOVE THIS!!! You may have just given me my motivation for the day.
The reality of PCSing to Hawai'i is setting in as my orders are at the RFO stage and I got a packet from Human Resources at Tripler via Fed Ex today. OMG, I'm going to have a real job, be an active duty Army officer, and the most scary thing of all- I'll be "The Doctor."Lynne
Please know that I would be more than willing to come out and help you get things unpacked, painted, wallpapered (does anyone still do that? :confused3) etc. As Cam can tell you, I am all about making sacrifices for friends. :rolleyes1

JustSmile -- I used to walk with my youngest in the mall when we lived in Kansas. One warning for you - Cinnabons will be open. :scared1:
FireDancer -- Welcome to the group!!! Happy to have you here.
Cam -- Great job on your workouts! Love you guys!

And a HUGE thank you again to everyone for your kind words and prayers during Kevin's now-almost-over deployment. You've been a real encouragement to us and we are grateful.

Carrie - congrats on the rest day yesterday but ugh, sorry about the weather today. TM's don't tend to respond well to quality time LOL, they kind of just sit there in their cold, rigid state of being.

FireDancer - Welcome! Super speedy times there!

Lily - Congrats on the awesome run!! Nice work!

Christa
- Sure, sure...the ol' "computer ate my post" excuse  :goodvibes: 30 miles on the trainer, wow! Hope today is a better day at work for you.

claire
- I hear you on the hungry issue!! I think I've been constantly hungry since about week 10 of Goofy training last year...worst part for me is that I want junky carb foods...oh well, back to the water :) Good luck on the 5 miles today!

Stephanie
- Cool that you have a couple races scheduled...you can "virtual run" with the Minnie folks that weekend :goodvibes: I'm with you on the 5k distance...who would have ever thought I'd actually prefer 6.2 or even 13.1 OVER 3.1 :rotfl:

TXAng
- Congrats on the successful pics! I've never mall walked but do know that a lot of folks do it around here...i'm sure they won't mind you run/walking with a stroller.

Amy - Hey there buddy  Sure glad you finally got the rest day in yesterday!! What time are you planning on leading the "On location WDW Pilates for WiSHers"??

Scott's world - Made it to the fitness center yesterday, but it was nice out so I actually biked there instead of taking the car :goodvibes: I biked to it, did 30 on the elliptical and then hopped back on the bike for a 30 minute cruise around the 'hood/return trip home. Breaking things up like that made for a much more enjoyable XT workout and is something I want to keep doing in the future now that the weather is warmer and it stays light out longer. I capped the night off with some pilates and today is a scheduled 5 mile run.

I hope everyone has a great day today!

It is just southwest of Cleveland. I do a lot of 5K's and 10K's around Cleveland so if any WISHers do some let me know.

Hi neighbor! I live in Parma.. I am very slow, though, and doing my first 5k on the 19th!

Hi Everyone,

I'm trying to catch up this week. I made it thru 6 pages and figured I'd better post this now and finish up the rest later or I might never get through it all.

My foot is feeling OK now. I've switched to new shoes, I'm only running every other day and I'm icing alot. So far so good. Hopefully I'll make it to Minnie alright.

Angie: Thanks for posting the photo. I’m glad to see that the color of the visor and shirt are such a match. What a cute son you have. Congrats on your new job.

Lily: I’m glad you finished your 8 miler, even if they end was tough. It’s reassuring to know that you can finish Minnie. Don’t worry about the birthday cake, you’ll be better off in the long run, it’s bad luck not to share someone’s birthday cake.

Bill: I hope you recover quickly.

Cecilia: Good luck with finding your motivation.

Leana: Great job getting your long run in on Sunday. It’s amazing how great a motivator guilt is. No wonder mother’s have been using it since the world began. I’m glad you like your new bike.

Cam: I can’t believe the hours of work you put in, but still find time to workout. Good for you.

Carrie: Thanks for the hugs. Congrats on your PR. It does make all the training worth it. Spa after Minnie? Great idea. I hadn’t put that in the plans, but time to rethink now…

Amy: Sorry about the trail run, though continuing for 8 miles is something to be proud of.

Jeff: Sorry to hear about the loss of your friends. You should post a picture of your DDs posing with your winning check.

Tracey: I agree with you about the guilt of leaving the kids to go run, but it really is a small amount of time in comparison to how much time you spend with your family on a weekly basis. Plus I find it’s a great lesson for my kids in making exercise a part of my life. Any chance of occasionally springing for a babysitter?, That way you can go run, your husband can do chores around the house and your kids will have someone “new” to play with. I invite my sister or 14 yo neice. That way it only cost me lunch.

Claire: Getting swept is a Magical Disney Experience I’m willing to miss out on. Good luck with your final.

Judy: Glad you were able to do some training other than just coughing. I experienced way too much of that kind of training this winter. Thanks to you and your foam roller video I actually bought one. I haven’t taken it out of the box yet, but at least I still have it.

Scott: Congrats on your rest day, although didn’t sound like you rested much.

Kira: Congrats on the new Garmin. I love mine.

Martha: I hope the good weather this week will inspire your training.

Jackie: I thought you were the one who had the stress fracture. What type of training did you do when you were letting it heal? How long did it take?

Jen: I’m so sorry for your weather. Ours has been bad this year, but nothing compared to yours.

Tracy: Nice job getting out in the rain. Good for you!!

Stephanie: Glad you were able to get out and run. Good luck finding a race.

Duckie: Sorry for your loss. It sounds like there was so positive to come from it.

Have a great day everyone.
Cindy

Morning folks!

I finally got to see Spirit of the Marathon last night and I loved it! It definitely brought back memories of how I was feeling during the Goofy in January. I may have been a little misty eyed.

I decided to bike into work this morning. I left my house to drive to a nearby park and the weather was half decent but all of a sudden it started snowing! And snowing in buckets. It made for an interesting ride in. This is supposed to clear up later on this morning though, fingers crossed!

With 3-1/2 weeks to go til Minnie 15 k, I seem to be unable to kick these outer shin/ankle fatigue/tightness that came out of nowhere after my recent vacation (that'll teach me to go away!)
Had another run this morning (3 miles/28:10) and sure enough, after about 1 mile the right one starts acting up. Then later a little on the left. Not enough to make me quit, but enough to mess with my head and make me uncomfortable running. Seem to get better later in the run.
Nothing I have tried has made this go away: resting 1-2 days, new shoes, running pace, running surface, ice.
So here's my dilemma...do I just plod along and get in my runs between now and then? I have yet to do an 8-miler, which I want to do (for psych reasons). I have been thinking about taking a week off from running--just doing non-impact XT and upper body weights. I'm nervous that taking a whole week off will mess with my mind-especially if it doesn't work.

Anyone care to comment? I'm beginning to lose confidence.

Maura

GOOD MORNING TEAM!!

Gosh I have only missed a couple of days. YOU GUYS ARE SOOOOO CHATTY!! :) I have missed it. Sorry I have been MIA and I have been able to vaugely skim through posts. But I have been getting my training in. Tuesday night did 4 on treadmill at gym with little bit of speed in, did do a mile at 8.5 pace and 1/4 mile at 8.10 pace :woohoo: Then for some reason thought it would be good idea the next morning to get up and run before my 6 am Pump class!!! :rolleyes1 Yeah! Not so much - I did manage a miserable 3 miles though.

I can't possibly begin to respond to posts, but thank you guys so much for th econtinued congratulations on the job and complements on the picture, my DH is adorable isn't he

I do want to say Craig Believe it or not I always, expecially on long runs, run my first two miles between 9.5 and 10 min pace so I will probably be behind you or maybe, hopefully be able to keep up with you. That has always been my #1 PROBLEM I CAN NOT get up speed in the beginning.

OK BACK TO WORK!!

Maura...my non-professional advice is to take a week off from running and do cross-training instead (bike, elliptical, swimming etc). My guess on your shin/ankle issue is possibly early stages of either shin splints OR tibial tendonitis. Is there a sort of achey tenderness on the outside of the shin just above the ankle? Regardless of the underlying problem it should respond quickly to a nice break from pounding the pavement. I've dealt with both issues in the past....and would suggest icing as often as possible, advil or aleve a few times per day and a week off from running. Best of luck!

You're right, it is a small amount of time. My DS14, a runner as well, usually helps out with watching his 3 little brothers, but the idea of having my niece come over is a great one. She's loves my littlest one and would happily play with him. I'm not sure why I didn't think of it.:confused3 Thanks!

Maura - I would also highly recommend getting a massage and let the therapist know you have been having a shin problem so they can work on that and your calves. I had a lot of shin issues a month ago and I agree, it was really demoralizing. I realized it was mostly due to tight calves so the massage I got a little while ago helped immensely. Take a week off as well, just in case, as you still have plenty of time to get the 8 miler in.

Maura - What was your max run so far? If you've done 7 miles, that equivalent to what most beginner plans have you run before a race. I mayx at 10 for teh half and at 20 for teh full. Plus, I missed my 10-miler fro marathon bcause we were sick. We took almost 2 weeks off running right around our max traning run, which would be this weekend for teh Minnie) adn PR'd the Martian. 1 week off will do you mroe good than anything. We did 1 walk in that time, no XT. You will be fine if you take acare of those legs. FYI, when my shins get tight, I shake out my legs adn just let my feet plod on the ground. Loosenng those muscles does wonders. You will be ok!!!!

Leana - Only misty eyed? You really are tough! ;)

Cindy - Get those ressies quick! I got ours about 2 months agao and the mornign was failry full already.

Scott - For me, quality time with the TM is every time it doesn't thorw me off. ;) Good job on your work out and biking to the fitness center!

Angie - You don't need to work, you're leaving that job anyway. :rotfl: How'd tehy take it? When's your first day at the new place?

Tracey, Carol, and Scott – Thanks for the info on mall walking! I think I’ll give it a try one of these days. It would be nice to have an air conditioned space to walk in as it starts getting so hot outside.

Carrie – Oh, twist my arm! ;) Here's my favorite shot from the portrait session:
s41487ca109830_5.jpg

Claire – So, are you sore today? Hope not!

Lily – Nice job!

Lynne – I’m glad to hear that the missing visor has turned up! Yay!

Craig – Sorry the language lessons didn’t work out. You painted a pretty funny mental image, though!

Bill – Glad you’re feeling better.

Maura – I’m no expert, but I’d vote for taking a week to rest from running. You don’t want to risk getting seriously injured right before the Minnie!

Carrie My first day is April 21 and my very first week there I have Friday off, lots of time to get ready for MINNIE next weekend. Was really mad that the Friday off wasn't weekend of MINNIE but you can't have it allright. They ACTUALLY took it surprisingly well and told me I can come back when I get tired of crunching numbers in a cubicle somewhere. :confused3

TxAng All I can say is   HOW GORGEOUS!!!

Bill

Ah yes, engineers. My section last fall was the interdepartmental one, so I had Sloan undergrads, Masters' students from all over the Institute, and a few PhD's in engineering disciplines. My best student was a chem-e doctoral student. Having this group was a lot of fun, but a challenge as well, as frankly, the graduate students in engineering all were better mathematically than I. I have the same section as well this fall, so if by some weird unfortunate, I mean lucky, freak of nature I had you in class, I'd be prepared.

Angie

I am the opposite of you in races. I tend to blow off the line like a lunatic, and then pay the price later. The crowds and lack of corrals at the TOT helped me in retrospect, as I hit mile 2 in 19, a full minute off my planned pace, but it meant I hadn't done something dumb in the first couple of miles. Perhaps combined we could produce a good and sane first 2 miles, so we'd be set up for nice results over the 15K.

Tracey

That's a problem we've all faced at some point, and it is tough to find time to train when you have little ones. In spite of the need to juggle all of it, I think it's important for you and more importantly, it is an excellent example for your children, to see mom and dad, who love them, work hard, and still find time to live an active and healthy lifestyle. It's also true your children will take great pride in your achievements, which is an amazing feeling for any parent.

Finally, I purchased this clothy-postery thing off ebay of Steve Prefontaine with him racing in a USA singlet (in front as always) with one of his great quotes, "Somebody may beat me, but they are going to have to bleed to do it." Even though it totally doesn't apply to me, I think it's a great philosophy for any race. Train for the race, and when the gun goes off, go for it.

Craig

Hi neighbor! I live in Parma.. I am very slow, though, and doing my first 5k on the 19th!

I grew up in Parma and my mom still lives there. Which 5K are you doing on the 19th? If by chance it is the Old Oak run I will be there.
